After years of having competitors try to sing like Mariah Carey or Freddie Mercury because that’s what we’ve been conditioned to expect, we get someone who sings more like Bruddah Iz. And that’s what the show needed.

I am so glad that this boy won! In the beginning of the show, I knew he was going to win. There was something about this boy.
Finally, its been a long time since there was a legitimately soulful artist that didn't seem full of themselves. Also, I'm thrilled for his mother. I can't image how proud she is. I can't image...
If he re-releases this song as an acoustic, he may very well break some sales/streaming records. Also, can we note that despite the emotion... he played the guitar absolutely flawlessly. Second nature. And for those who thought he was a sympathy pick... listen to this entire reel. He didn't miss a note, a string, or a moment. This is as good a talent on this show since La'Portia.

He's my top 1 overall & willie spence 2nd (may willie RIP), with ruben studdard at 3rd all time AI favorite male singers. I watch many music competitions, but have never watched & connected to other contestants as i did with iam. His choices in songs was like a roadmap of his life & soul, they always had meaning. Rodney may he rest in peace, was more than a great father. He was a teacher who gave his son the tools to pave his path. I cant wait to follow his journey. This young man is extraordinary, talented & special.

Oliver Steele said in a recent interview that he pegged Iam to win back during Hollywood Week, before he knew anything about Iam’s dad Rodney other than Rodney was the one who got him into music. Oliver said what he saw about Iam that set him apart from everyone else was how he could hear Iam’s love of people, music, and culture in every song he sang. And it was identifiable from the first note.
God that first one always gets me, its the first time someone singing truly hits me in the feels that fast. You can just feel it in your soul as soon as he starts singing
Solo or in duets/groups, there is no mistaking Iams voice & you can pick it out instantly yet its so versatile that it blends so easily with others as well. That is prodigy-esque musicianship & pure unfiltered talent. His voice is like his soul, the calm in the storm & sun breaking apart the clouds, yet when he lets loose it hits like a ton of bricks straight to the heart. Humble, kind, compassionate. His song choices were like a roadmap to his soul as each held special meaning to him & his family. Have never felt a connection like this to other contestants & have watched many music shows, as i have with Iam. Wishing him all the best on his journey. His parents raised a beautiful son major respect to rodney & lillie, and rodney was a wonderful teacher too giving his son the tools to build his own path.

We've been watching Idol for years, and we were moved to vote for the first time. Iam's voice transcends to us that gives shows us love and gives us hope. Ive lost my father about 12 years now. I can talk about it, look at photos, all without a problem, not a single tear drop, not because i didnt love my father, but because i fully understand the "circle", or at least i thought i understood... I love how much personality he had. Little things like reading off the lyrics from the guitar, pointing at Lionel Richie when he played his song, chocking up when playing monsters with James blunt. He was never putting up a façade he was just him. His dad raised an amazing human being
I recently saw an interview with Oliver where he admitted that taping the lyrics to the guitar was his idea. He said Iam was worried he’d get in trouble and reassured him he wouldn’t, the judges wouldn’t even care, and that they’d even like it. And Oliver was right… sort of. 😉

@@wxkat smart idea. Oliver has been a great pal to Iam. In this case, though, Oliver had a lot to lose if Iam messed up bad, and he knew the guitar problem was going to bother him. You do what you have to do. Turned into a very charming moment.
@@gatesurfer and they’ve kept up that friendship well past the competition. This past weekend Iam headlined a concert at Turtle Bay on Oahu and invited Oliver to join him on stage for “Island Style,” the song they first bonded over on the show. It’s like they’ve come full circle.

Tongi is so brave, he is only 18 and he is singing in front of crowds. The most amazing thing about his performances are he sings with his eyes closed. It shows he is truly passionate about what he is performing and singing, it shows that he is here for the experience, to connect with the music. He is so likeable, the way he smiles it is so in the moment. He connects with his soul.

It was great to see how as he progressed through he opened up. Loved to see him smiling when the fly landed on his head. I also loved when he sang the song before that and he came in and said “how’s everyone doing tonight?” He’s already got the performer in him it’s great such a beautiful singer.
Iam deserved the win. He is a great singer and story teller ❤and delivers every word so you can hear the whole song. His love for his dad and family is his strength. People who don’t understand ADHD will never understand how they feel. He overcame all his obstacles to become the star. His dad will be proud as his son listened to every word . He captivates all ages with his voice. I love listening to him. Keep going Iam .
I've spent 12 years in Hawaii. The Big Island. Now I live in Spokane. I miss Hawaii. This young man reminded me why I love Hawaii and Hawaiian people. I wish him happiness and love. Aloha.
