I make a soup I call kitchen sink soup. Especially when we're sick but the kids love it any time. I add chicken broth, any root veggies I have like beets, onions, carrots, parsnips, potatoes. Then add 1 meat protien and a few different kinds of beans. Topped off with any green veggies. Then whatever herbs and spices but it always has turmeric, garlic, pepper, salt, onion. Then whatever I'm in the mood for lol. Sounds like a lot but it's so yummy 😋 also serve topped with sour cream, crackers, or sour kraut

Awww, this just melts me! In my actual day to day, while my few friends are 'supportive' of my canning and homestead dream, they don't really 'get it'. I thought I was NUTS for vocalizing this on a public platform like YT, but its been so worth it, because there are so many of us out there-making the best with what we've got and having fun along the way. I'm so glad that you see my heart even through my quirky personality! Blessings to you!!

@@BecomingaFarmGirlI'm 33 and can for my family and my friends totally don't get it. I even can for mine and my husband's parents because our mom's just don't feel up to it anymore.
I am a lover of, do it yourself, grow it yourself, learn it, share it, grow the love mentality. Even though most people just think I'm eccentric, I have a few really great friends that have become so excited and passionate about it to. My sister in law even just asked me to teach her how to make and can jam (aka the gateway canning😂). I'm so excited!
You are awesome, and your channel is seriously one of my favorites to put on even if I don't plan on canning that day. Your personality, and the way you share your thoughts make me feel like I stopped over at a friend's house.

@@BecomingaFarmGirl I am 51 and still learning a lot. My husband and I bought 20 acres and plan to homestead when he retires in a few years. Just learned to can a year ago. Watching you homestead in your townhome is just amazing while you work towards your goals. I am 1 of 13 kids. Grew up on a farm with a single mama of us kids. All I know is hard work and work for what I want. I was thrifting before it ever became popular!! Aww, I appreciate this so much so much! When I'm on a particular topic, I just like to say as much as I can about it so that folks won't have to go hunting all over my channel for other videos. As of late, I've noticed that my pantry chats are longer because the late spring and summer harvests truly are a busier time in my kitchen and I wanted to share how, even with full-time work, I attempt to balancing putting out weekday meals, preserving, and grocery shopping. When my Nana was on this side of heaven, she and I would spend hours just chatting about food, meals we were gonna make and our thrift finds and sharing in this way really puts me in touch with that special time we had together. Hope you're having a great summer!

I LOVE that you spend time with your mom. ENJOY her as much as you can. The grief I went through was so deep the last year. I haven't cried so much in my entire life. 99% of it was so good...but wow, the 1% of pain is no joke. It was painful. Learning to live without her...a whole new world. A whole new LIFE!

Got good recipes for these things, by chance?
      Even growing up LDS Mormon
(in which LARGE families & economical living are glorified & sanctified),
with a Mom from _extremely poor,_ very rural roots, & a family of 10
_(my Mom's family of origin, not mine),_
& then living in Utah for 7 years, & visiting with my clan of relatives in Idaho
(in the lands of huge families & small budgets)
& then living in rural, hippie, far Northern California for over 20 years
(where many live as close to the land, & no-waste as possible),
& going to Herb School there (where I learned lots of natural & no-waste cooking & lifestyle tips, in addition to an Herbalist's Education),
I've never heard of these things!

I just came across your channel today, and subscribed.
I'm an ol'lady, raised by Depression-Era Grandparents & tight-wad 60s/70s parents, but I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your content. SO much more wholesome, personable, practical, useful, and classy than virtually all the "entertainment" on television.
    How wonderful!!!
Oh, quick tip on curing your own meats - we have bought grassfed half-cows from local farmers once a year. I maximize my value by asking for unusual cuts (cheek, hangar steaks, necks, tongue, oxtail, etc...), and requesting my organ meats, bones, suet, and other fat scraps.
When the lady who owns the abbatoir found out I use cuts that others threw away, she loaded me up with lagniappe from other folks' orders that she otherwise would have discarded, including multiple hearts, livers, and tongues.
Beef tongues make AWESOME corned beef, if you have access to affordable beef tongue.
(Also ground beef heart is an ingredient in Detroit-style chili for Lafayette-style Coney Island hot dogs - a regional thing where I grew up.)
Love the muffin meals, too! 😊

That way I only take what I need for the following day for protein and I’m frugal with my ziplocks 😅. I buy meats once every 3 months in bulk ($200-300) at a time to prep and freeze. R side is old frozen meats to be used 1st; L new meats. We’re a family of 5 and don’t eat too much meat. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Best thing I’ve found since now I live alone is a vacuum sealer. Pop those babies out of the muffin cups and vacuum seal. I just ate pirogi sealed at Christmas! Perfect no freezer burn. I also froze 2 lb cheese from Sam’s club in small packages. No more cheese going bad

Love, my butcher. I was reaching for marked down chicken and he stopped me. He said "Always stay away from the chicken (meat) if it is 'bloated'. He was starting to pull them off the line.
Turns out swelling can occur in packaging due to gases formed as a result of spoilage taking place. Bacterial growth can cause gas formation. If you see a raw food package that looks like someone pumped air into it like a balloon, you should avoid it or discard it.

I was having problems getting meat at a discount. You would think meat would go down on the fourth of July but it didn't. The hamburger was cheaper a couple week before. My discount ticket on meat used to be 50% but now 30%. Even the discount frozen section did the same thing. I've noticed less of a discount has been taken. I really have to be on my toes by having a double discount by using both the discount and timing also a few dollars on my stores app too.

What? I did not think to save veggie scraps off my peppers and cucumbers and zuchinni. I toss those. I do save scraps from carrots, onions, and celery and fruit scraps but did not think to save the scraps off peppers and the like for veggie broth. Eye opening! I can jams and jellies but I have not tried pressure canning. Well...I did buy one so I've got to get it out and figure it out! Hahaha! HOw did you know I was giving you the side eye because I was. Thank you for this timely Pantry Chat video! I adore these chats, and even if it's not everything I can use, there's always some I can (and do!) use. One other potential for those corn husks (if you are careful when stripping them from the corn) is tamale wrappers. We treat the labor-intensive process of making tamales as an autumn family fun gathering, and having husks we've dried and saved helps cut the costs at the store. Also, if you want to make something a little more cheesy flavored and are low on parmesan, you can sprinkle in some nutritional yeast. 😃

Funny that you mention the ham and corn soup recipe again- I was literally standing by the meat section in Aldi today trying to look up that video, since we got corn in our CSA box this week. Except I had stuck in my head that it’s chicken and corn soup, so I bought the on sale chicken instead. Oops. I did also buy silicone muffin pans there today, before watching this video, but I got the mini size. I’m glad to hear that you’ll be including pantry chat info in the newsletters soon!

@@BecomingaFarmGirl [Stephen’s wife, Laura] It’s worth every step of preparation! This is not anything to hurry into. All that planning and preparation and learning in the mean time will be hugely valuable toward your journey in homesteading!
We are starting over here after moving to a new property just 2 years ago and having more babies (our youngest just turned 1 year old in June). So it is slow going with our resources spread about. Our garden is in eight raised boxes this year and going pretty well, although bugs are fierce this year! Using natural remedies and sprays (neem oil is great!!) is helping with the battle of the bugs. Canning season is just getting going with green beans to start and soon to can potatoes and squash, Lord willing, if all goes well!
Your ideas on how to preserve the meats is so helpful. I believe my issue has been putting the meats in the freezer immediately after coming home and trying to cook single meals after thawing that clearance meat. I will try your technique of preserving and cooking as soon as I can with fresh meat. Just using a different technique to preserving may be the key here!! Thank you so much for your videos! I so appreciate you and look forward to watching your journey unfold!!!

I am on a fixed income. I shopped at Food Lion on the 3rd of August. I bought a lot of meat. I only spent $55. I saved $85. My receipt showed me my savings. You said something about some stores do things that make the meat look better. I bought some pork ribs for my ribs and rice. When I boiled the ribs there was a strong smell of vinegar. I had heard of stores washing meat in vinegar to make it look better. Needless to say I no longer go to that store. This is the first time I have watched you. But, it won't be the last. My biggest problem is that I can't afford a pressure canner. I do love to can. ❤❤❤❤

I just stumbled upon your channel 2 days ago and I am already hooked! Your bubbly, beautiful and inspiring spirit is amazing. Your knowledge and willingness to share it and teach others is selfless. I subscribe to many homesteading channels, but I just love your personality. It is so refreshing. Your mom is a gem too. I am 60 and I didn't get serious about growing and preserving food until 2 years ago due to feeling the need to be prepared and stocked up for the future because of the way things are going in this world. I've had a small garden for many years, but didn't preserve much of it. I've now tremendously enlarged my garden space (so thankful to God for having some ground to do it) and started canning and dehydrating. I watched my mother and grandmother do gardening, canning, and dehydrating when I was growing up and I wish I had paid closer attention to the process. I'm still learning new things every day, thanks to caring people like you. Best wishes for much success on your journey to being a "farm girl".
