Woman's Incredible Backyard Homestead Produces TONS of Food for Her Family - URBAN GARDEN TOUR

- Asia started off with a single garden bed in her backyard, and over the last three years, she has transformed it into a thriving urban homestead that produces loads of fruit, vegetables, eggs, meat, herbs, and more! She's also got backyard chickens and quail, a greenhouse, a 2-bin compost system, and rainwater collection.

Asia is growing an abundance of fresh food year-round for herself and her two kids, and she dries, freezes, and preserves a lot of her harvest as well. Some of what she's growing includes blueberries, peaches, asparagus, squash, tomatoes, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, cantaloupe, onions, watermelon, medicinal plants, herbs like basil, and so much more!
She grows in a mix of raised beds (built with free cinder blocks she snagged online), no dig beds (with compost and free cardboard), in the ground, in bags, and on trellises.
We hope you enjoyed seeing this backyard transformation from a grass lawn to a productive homestead and the abundance of food Asia is growing. Definitely check out her channel to follow along: / @yellowdoorurbanhomestead

This is so awesome 🎉❤
Thanks so much, happy you enjoyed meeting Asia :)
Where are located? I have been in Urban Homestead since 2015, but I had to stop. I have questions that you may help me with. Thank you.
Beautifully captured! She's doing an amazing job 🤗🌿
P.E.A.C.E.! Ms. Asia, I would love to turn you on to some excellent information and knowledge on urban homestead gardening, medical and edible herbs etcetera. You are doing an amazing job! Queen ...
I started watching her two years ago and stopped because I got so depressed about my living situation. I grew my own garden but I was going through a domestic violent relationship at the same time. This year I let it all go. I also had chickens either a beautiful coop but I gave it all up to create a better life for me and my son. Two days ago I found a house! So now I’m working towards my garden again. I’m so proud to see her flourishing! It motivates me to create my garden all by myself. And luckily with the house that I found I can do all of that and more. I’m so blessed, I cried for days like this and my heart is just filled with so much joy❤️
I know your garden is going to be just so beautiful. Praise the Lord. HE is so good.
@@sophiaelayne9984 Thank you❤️
Stay safe, stay strong!
So glad you found a house, the garden will help you heal both mentally and physically. Enjoy your new safe home.
So glad you got out of that situation. God bless you and your son. Take good care of him and heal
This woman looks so healthy!
She looks healthier than 90% of Americans.
And beautiful :)
Yes very beautiful
If everyone ate real food a lot more people would look that good.
not really....when you work the ground you don't have time to do your nails!!!!!!
This woman is an inspiration and a legend!!!!
And refreshingly humble
a legend? i never heard of her
I love that you are showing people that you don't have to have double/triple digits acres on small acreage. I feel like " homesteading" is becoming the new, keeping up with the Jones's. It has newbies thinking they have to have tons of land and animals to homestead. We can grow where you're planted. Thank you for sharing.
God loves you so much! John 3:16✝️
Thank you so much Exploring Alternatives for sharing my story! I appreciate all the comments! 💚🤗
You’re amazing! I love this so much. Amazing what you’ve built in 3 years. 🪴 🌱
Just subscribed! Thank you so much for sharing!
You're amazing, remarkable, and inspiring! You have me thinking of how I can have a garden in my backyard. Thanks for sharing your story.
Truly beautiful and an inspiration clearly you’ve done this in another time before 💫
I started a garden this year and have harvested a few zucchini, tomatoes, & chillies but nothing like the scale of your garden! I just subscribed to your channel to get some ides for next year!
If you’ve ever grown or attempted to grow a vegetable garden you know how amazing this garden is. She’s an incredible gardener. What a boon for her, her family and her neighborhood.
In only 3 years. Its so beautiful m
@@MzCrayKrayindeed. Nature wants to grow. So just throw that seed in. :)
It’s inspiring to see her success! Gives me more hope for my own garden. ♥️
So inspiring ✨🥹
I want to try it
The security that it gives her, plus exercise, better health, and it just keep a person moving.
Very impressive.
If you don't try, you never fail, but you if you don't fail, you don't learn.
She's awesome.
I love how she spoke about when she first started gardening and how listening to everyone's advice cost her too much money. She decided to step back and trust herself and found what works for her without breaking the bank.
You've got that right! There is so much complicated and expensive advice out there! When it comes to gardening, it's in all of us! We've done it for millenia. It's just time to rediscover it and trust our instincts!
Imagine being this incredible and dedicated
It's actually very calming and fruitful ❤
I tried and I failed to even imagine. I’m floored by what a great farmer/gardener/grower she is. Amazing!
She is so beautiful inside and out! I love how humble she is about the magnificent garden she has created. Such an inspiration
She gives off a very healthy and vibrant energy. A testament to eating natural foods, the physical work, being around plants and a sense of accomplishment. Well done!
She’s looking incredibly healthy, and I am thankful that she’s teaching people about urban gardening.
I am happy to learn about the urban gardening also
I loved your garden Ms. Asia. It's healthy, healing, organic, peaceful, quiet and in harmony with Nature. I always plant and start my garden in summer. I started my seeds but covid hit me and my poor seeds died. I have no energy to plant. Thank you for sharing your lovely garden. In my place we have nosy neighbors that reported one of my neighbor who owns a chicken. He was fined $400 for growing a chicken in his backyard. I grew up in the Pacific islands. All we have is what we grow in the backyard. We don't have a grocery stores. Our market day is only once a week so we have to be self reliant. I grew up with several chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, cows, goats, carabaos, cats and 11 dogs. They are farm dogs. They always follow my dad to the farm. They hunt mice and some unwanted snakes, insects in my late father's farm. You gave me inspiration to grow my garden again next year. Thank you again for sharing your story.
Yes, there is a HIGH cost for trying to be independent!!
I love growing my own food too. Hard work but peaceful, fulfilling, good exercise, and you eat good!!! …and get that serotonin boost🤣too! (and you make your community a better place)
What a gorgeous garden! That's how you learn. Just start, and the garden will teach you over time. I can't believe you've only been at this for a few years!
I can relate. I grew up in my grandmother's flower garden so the lime-green thumb started. I got interested in "food" gardening about 5 years ago with plenty of failures and lots of money thrown away. I eventually found success with carrots and peppers. The summer of 2019 I taught myself canning. Luckily my mother gave me her mother's waterbath canner; I just needed to get the jars and accessories. Now I have plans to market garden all the things with improved skills, better knowledge and 10 acres. If you want it, go after it.
Girl. You just keep going. I was more interested in flowers but then started on fruit. Herbs and a few other things. I have been picking a lot of figs and waiting for the other fruits to ripen up.
Exactly. Just start.
Very beautiful garden indeed
@@thesouthernlatebloomer1191I remember my grandma’s garden as we😢
This is so inspiring. What a lovely garden planted by a very beautiful soul.
Hello how are you doing today?
I don't know the last time I held a smile on my face for this long.
You and your garden are pure beauty
Right?? Like I smiled through the whole video!
@@victoriouslyveefilms22 Me too. I smiled through the whole video. She's such a delight!
I love Asia’s laid back friendly personality. Yellow Door is one of my favorite YT channels
Her garden is so abundant and she looks like the picture of health! So inspiring
She knows how to survive! Not just with food but I bet her and her family are healthy as heck! They're going to live a long, healthy life!
I absolutely agree!
Truly a replica of our ancestors ' ambitions and lifestyles
This is so inspiring! This is exactly what type of lifestyle I’m striving to achieve! I love this so much! Thank you so much for sharing this and for documenting this!
This is the most awesome thing I have seen in months!!
Asia has such amazing and steady energy. She is radiant and also radiates optimism + realism. She's done a phenomenal job with this garden and is so inspiring for people. I love how she highlighted low cost ways of setting up the infrastructure. The chickens 🥰 the compost, the greenhouse and the collapsible rain barrel are brilliant 🤗
Agreed. She is very resourceful. Just use what you have and learn as you go.
This is beautiful. Thank you for showing people that they don't need many acres to produce enough food to feed their family.
This is wonderful..You're an inspiration!!!! You remind me of a friend in New Orleans .Every year she"reclaimed" her back yard and turned it into a lovely oasis of hydroponic gardening, raised beds and figs growing in a large trash container with wheels....Keep on doing what your doing.!
I freaking love this!!!! She is a true inspiration ❤❤❤
Her children are really blessed! Not only do they get to eat fresh vegetables and eggs, but they also learn where food comes from.
She's beautiful. She is so productive with her tiny space, ease of taking care of her chickens. Other YT homesteaders with lots of land, animals and way to much work. She looks calm and happy.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Reminds me of my grandparents and other relatives "back in the day". This is so much better than watching some multi-million dollar concrete backyard with a swimming pool. BRAVO!!!!
Nice how small this is and still works so well.
We've been off grid for 10 years and many many people have asked me how to make that leap. And I always tell them start where you are with what you have. And you'll be amazed what you can do right there. She is doing this.
I’m in Fort Mill SC
I’ve been gardening for a while now
It’s good for my mental health
And I really love it..I love to see things growing!!
You go, Asia! Very impressive!
Wow for such a small space she has an abundance. I'm happy for her. Thanks Matt and Danielle for sharing her story.❤
Love your garden,I really admire what you have done ❤.
I loved this woman and her garden! You can feel her love and passion for gardening. ❤
I love this! I’ve always been a city girl and love growing my own food. I’ve grown food on window sills, in my local community garden and on my small balcony, I can’t see myself giving up my urban lifestyle for acreage in the countryside although I know that may suit many people. Love seeing urban gardeners share how they maximize space to grow food and keep chickens 💕
Love your garden! thanks for sharing.
I wish I was younger, at 72 I just cannot do much. I can hardly keep up with the weeds. I'm glad my daughter grows it now and I just help as much as I can. Beautiful garden. Blessings.
Consider grow bags and container gardening .no bending very little weeding .just do tomatoes or potatoes 1 or 2 veggies.
@@MarySpain1958 She has those
There are a lot of gardeners around your age on youtube.
I’m 70, let the sweet lady be her. I bet she’s fabulous ❤
Intelligent functional productive. I truly appreciate your energy
I enjoy gardening with a passion. I feel that vibe in you. Keep having healthy fun loads of benifits 👍🏿💕
Love this so much. She is glowing from the fresh food and the the gardenimg is so anti-stress
I love your channel. Your garden is beautiful. I love your attitude and your smile.
I grew up gardening, this year I expanded my garden after tinkering with containers the last 2 summers. I have been feeding my neighbor.
Your are a great person.
I am amazed at the garden she has created in only 3 years! Wow! Wow! Wow! I love that she has blueberries, fruit trees and melons, in addition to so many vegetables! I wish I lived next door to her so we could chat over the fence about our veggies. 🎉🎉
Hello how are you doing?
We should all do this truly! So inspiring. Beautiful bountiful garden 🪴 ❤
Yes! Thank you :)
Her skin is beautiful
I am so proud of Yellow Door Urban. She is doing what it will take to feed her famlily when the system fall's apart. Way to go Aisa! God bless you.♥️🥕🍑🥑🍅🍆
AMEN
As a first-year gardener in Harlem, you inspire me. I'm so thrilled I get to harvest my bell peppers and tomato varieties.
Congratulations on your growth in Harlem
@@MsTwiththeTea1980 Thank you very much! 🌹🍃🍂
I grew up in Harlem, in a brownstone. My mom grew some veggies and herbs, and we had a huge grapevine and a mulberry tree. Good luck with your garden!
For a three year journey, this woman is doing awesome! I love using grow bags, the mobility element is underappreciated. The only thing I would look into would be adding flowers for beneficial insects and maybe more rain water retention/conserving for hot summers.
Asia very nice peaceful garden! I have started urban garden with my daughter for now 2 years love it! Keep growing!
Extremely well done! I admire you immensely!
Thank you so much 😀
More optimistic ideas for my future thank you💕
100% agree
You look so happy, healthy and beautiful! Congratulations!!! ❤️
Thank you for sharing. What you're doing is just wonderful for you and your family, and giving others also. I'm a grower also. You go girl!
Asia is incredible
You’re incredible too Gaz!! ❤❤❤
Thank you! I absolutely love your channel and what you do as well! I enjoy your watching you cook!
Thanks for sharing this 🥰 I love growing too it is such a blessing 😁
This is wonderful, constructive, creative. I'm sure Asia is a proactive, open, creative, energized person in many ways. Much respect, and - great eating for years to come.
So impressive!! In 3 short years, you made a backyard haven full of food!! It’s obvious you put in TONS of hard work. I too started gardening in 2020. I have not expanded my gardens as much as you have but you definitely inspired me to get going!! Well done!! 💕💕
Really admire and appreciate the efforts you placed into the garden
Sustainable urban agriculture is something that we will all need to learn. This is such a beautiful way to use your space. Thanks for sharing
Spring is coming here in the southern hemisphere. Today I planted hundreds of seeds, I love to touch the soil. Love you all! 🥕🌽🥦🥬🫑🍄
I'm so proud of you. Great job! Keep up the beautiful work sister.
Your skin is glowing!
This is awesome! I'm a beginner at gardening, and I'm learning a lot.
So glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching :)
If you don’t already follow her page, you should you’ll learn a lot from her. This is my first year gardening and I’ve learned a lot from her.
Asia WOW ! What a beautiful video. I grew up in a big city and transplanted myself to a smaller suburban city/town. I always wanted to grow my own food but was scared I would be a serial plant killer. I started volunteering at a community garden in 2021. By the end of 2022 I earned a small plot in the garden. This community garden charges zero dollars, all they ask for is volunteers. Now in 2023 I successfully grew seedlings for the first time and they didn't die. I have a plot of cantaloupe and squash. Last month I picked my first cantaloupe out of my plot. The taste was incredible! The melon was sweet and full of juice. A month ago I added green peppers in the plot. Next year I will try to grow kale, strawberries, tomatoes and mixed salad greens.
I can say YES, to a healthier mind and body. The gardening work is hard yet healing. Eating fresh food from the garden tasted better than the store brought produce. I'm not digesting pesticides or chemicals. Keep growing !
Using greenhouse to dry is an awesome idea!
Love your garden Asia! I also started in 2020 and it's amazing how much abundance we can usher in :)
Wow what an amazing soul! I love her garden I can tell she puts lots of love into it
You really have a green thumb because everything you plant grows so beautiful just love watching your videos
Thank you for sharing, taking responsibility for your well-being, and honoring our planet.❤
I AM FROM A LARGE FAMILY 14 CHILDREN
7 BROTHERS,7 SISTERS!!!! ALL 5 OF MY UNCLES WERE ALL FARMERS PLUS MY GRANDPA, I LOVE GARDENS!!! I LOVE SEEING THINGS GROW!!!!
What an amazing individual, she’s shining ☀️
This is such a wonderful example of everyone who watches this channel and thought "god I wanna do this but I can't." She openly goes "i just saw some videos read some things, it took a while and here we are" very motivating.
This has been so inspirational! I am on a quest to help folks plant Memorial Gardens for their lost children. What an awesome way to support pollinators, grow flowers AND food at the same time.
She is speaking my language, I’m a new gardener have only 5 garden beds. Started last year with my kids for fun experiment. I find so much peace and joy seeing a tiny seed growing into food or caring for plants like my babies. I have small kids it’s harder to manage everything but I’m really excited about future. I’ve a lot of plans to grow my garden bigger and definitely get some chickens.
Asia, This is the first of your videos I watched. I think you're AWESOME!!! I've been gardening for 40 years. I grow a lot of the same ways that you do... We just moved last year to our new house, so my husband just built me above ground beds and a greenhouse that I've been wanting for over 10 years! It's better than I dreamed of and I'm just now starting to buy the plants that I've always wanted to grow in there. I live in Zone 6b, in PA, real close to the MD line. So I need the greenhouse to protect my new lemon tree, fig tree, olive tree and tea (Camelia Sinensis) plant. We drove down to NC to get the Tea plant from a Tea Nursery there! I am an Herbalist too. Last year I closed my little herbal business after 10 years, because it was too expensive for all of the rules and regulations to run a small business. But I sold a lot of herbal products in that time. I made medicinal teas, baths and culinery blends, and just sold my dried herbs. In my gardening I use Companion Gardening throughout. Next spring I want to start keeping a bee hive too. My only question for you is where is your garden? I was wondering if you're in the South... I'd love to hear from you! I'm going to watch more of your videos! Thank You for doing this! It's fun to see what other people are doing!
a lemon and fig tree in PA - I'm impressed! I'm in MD, Montgomery County. I would love to get a lemon tree started. Thanks for sharing about the tea nursery🙂 Continued success with your garden👍
This was SO INSPIRING I love seeing Urban Gardeners being featured
Asia, your urban garden is incredible. What you've accomplished in 3 years, the different methods of planting, using it all year, its wonderful. You've inspired me to try more than just raised beds and pots. ❤
Lady, you must have an organic heart and soul. I can see that you like what you do and the reward is pure happiness and good health. God bless!🥰
You should be proud, what a beautiful garden 🪴
Watching/listening to her talk about this is so beautiful. Her passion and enjoyment for this really just radiates off of her
Exactly 😊same here
What planting zone are you in?
I love this ladies smile. It’s a really amazing smile.
Oh my! This video is sooo inspiring. I love it! 👍💕 You are right. A seed can yield lots. It has been several year since l've gardened because of health but l am ready to get back to it. Several fam and friends were inspired by my gardening, then. My sis tried planting watermelon. She got a few. I agree wholeheartedly with your reasoning. You go girl! God bless you.🙏🏽
This video was wonderful! I just absolutely love what she did in such a small space. I go too big, then get overwhelmed. I want to start over smaller and put my love into it.
Be-a-u-tiful garden, woman...and life!! i admire ur determination and knowledge!! 💪
Awesome! 😎👍 kudos girl, never too late to grow your own food. Started at the right time. An urban prepper. It's a good thing! ❤
I love love love this
She’s so inspiring! I love her garden! I love how she built her garden. Appreciate her advice about growing a garden.
This is so inspiring! I live in an apartment, and have no yard and no balcony. I am slowly learning ways to grow my own food in the space available to me. Thank you for everything you post!
Seriously love your yard
Love this 🗓🗓🗓
I loved this video! I was going to give up my garden but I'm going to try again. You inspired me. I'm in TN and we have had so much rain and then the heat. It was a horrible summer for growing. I'm getting out tomorrow am and starting my fall garden. Wish me luck!
It's awesome that this video inspired you to try agin, best of luck!!
This summer was a tough one. I find that Fall gardening is much easier.
TN also-my 2 neighbors spring planted & the heat stalled them out. I wasn’t up to it, so germinated late, but my plants are all far healthier. Theirs are leaf eaten, infested. The disease starts with the extreme weather.
Hey I been making vermicompost for medical growing herbs,, if you need some I’ll send it for free,, I am a farmers in Mexico but i stay in Sacramento
Asia! What a woman. This is amazing to see, and I've always loved urban veggie gardens. This is a great inspiration for urban dwellers who have no idea what is possible. Loved this.
Beautiful, peaceful and inspiring video.
