    You are so inspiring. Most homestead channels make me feel overwhelmed because I’m so far from being able to implement their ideas, but your example of living with the homesteading mindset in a suburban space is comforting to me. You’re an amazing teacher. Thank you!

    My grandmother ( 1890's) had a memory jar. A bloom from all funerals, proms, weddings, etc., went into a loose-liddsd jar. Hers 2as ceramic, but mine was glass
    It shrinks. But I am so attached to th8s little jar that has memories of myfirst love and my weddings and funerals. All dried.

    There is a grocery store across the street from my job, I stop in a couple of mornings a week to look for clearance or marked down meat. Last week I scored chicken leg quarters for under $3 a pack. It was 4-5 leg quarters in each pack. I bought 3 left one. My son cooked one pack for dinner I canned the rest. The legs I canned with the bones, the thighs I de-boned, cut up and canned. I was so proud of myself finding a great deal.

      My friend, I am so proud that you are already using the 'pop-in' strategy! I love that you, like me, are leveraging already being close to a store to grab clearance items. Not too many folks do this. Did you say leg quarters for $3 a pack! What a find! You did exactly what I would've done--go ahead and cook one that defrosted and then preserve the rest. It truly keep meal time (and meats) affordable!

    Excellent videos. I can't tell you how much I lost during a 2 week power outage. Basically all the food I had. Love your videos on how to can , thank you, a Ton

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh my heart breaks for you! Power outages are devastating and stressful in the worst way. I’ve come to realize that the best prep is to have the skill of canning. One day I’d like to have an outdoor propane stove so that in the event of a power outage I could can what’s in my freezers. Even though we live in a “modern” society; the basic life skills are still priceless!

    No worries, let your family know a fuller freezer works better... It's the refrigerator that works better with air that circulates. The fuller the better for a freezer. 🥳 I enjoy your videos (new subscriber) thank you so much for everything you do ❤️

    • @lindajohnson4204

      My freezer that stands alone definitely can be filled all the way. But where i live, we have cheap, small fridges with the freezer on the top. Anytime we allow the vent at the back to get covered-there are no built in shelves, and even boxes can cause this problem-it can shut down our whole fridge, unable to cool any of it adequately. Si yes, if yiu are talking about a freezer that is just a freezer, it works much better to have it full. But if you have a fridge that depends on cold air from the top freezer, you can ruin it by covering the vent, or at least destroy the food. And that x-many cubic feet of freezer space is a lie, because so much clearance is necessary just to keep the fridge operating.

    I have 2 freezers and a few years ago I saw that someone had a freezer alarm, I didn't know that there was such a thing before. I purchased a pack with 2 and they have saved my bacon a few times as the members of my family sometimes don't properly close the doors. Congratulations on the new freezer, you got a great deal!

      @BootJamesOut ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello folks:
      Fill a cup with water place in freeze after water frozen but a quarter on top.
      Now if you went away for weeks and power goes out you can use this a gauge how much or any damages was done.
      Or save money by making Block of ice that fill up any free space
      If you need the room relex it's just water. As the ice will save your food as air will not on power outage.
      Stand up freezer beware each time the door is open out goes all of the cold from the bottom. Vs top load hold the cold in.
      Cardboard mid bottom door idea.

      Can you believe the grief your own flesh and blood will give ya? LOL. I know its coming from a good place. In the past, there have been times where I've gotten "caught up" and the freezer has been packed, but I always get around to it. Plus, a lot of what goes in my freezer are ingredients that I'm going to use to can or turn into a freezer meal. I just had to share that part!

      Hi Christy! I'm so glad you don't mind my "kind of crazy" chats. I feel like I'm all over the place sometimes, but I try to "organize" things. A freezer that is full works better and more efficient. After everything is frozen, it’s like having big cubes of ice in your freezer. My son told me this, and he’s been selling food to restaurants for over twenty years. So have fun filling it up with sale items.

  • @iamslbc
    @iamslbc ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The guides that come with a freezer point out that full freezers are more efficient than ones with more empty space. Frozen food holds cold, air does not every time you open the door. They used to tell us to fill the empty space with blown up balloons to hold cold air. You do want to avoid a lot of weight in the door to protect hinges and seal alignment.

    For any family members who give you a hard time about filling your freezer, you have some ammo. A full freezer is MORE efficient. than one that's only 3/4 or 1/2 full. 'Air flow' isn't as necessary in a freezer as it is in a fridge. You can even check any freezer manual to verify this info.That would likely be the reason as to why you didn't 'lose' as many things as you feared, b/c you had it pretty full before it kicked it!

    I’m sure your husband would be scandalized if he saw my freezer, but I go with the philosophy that a full freezer has more stable temperatures so doesn’t need to run as often. That’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it. 😂

    Girl, you need a tomato/berry corer! Found mine at the local grocery store for under $3.
    You will have much less waste of your strawberries with one.
    We also use them to remove seed cores from cucumbers and zucchini, use them so much we now have a second one.
    Oh, and what about turning some of that leftover blueberry juice into a syrup?!
    I'm all about finding those sales, especially on meats. Found chicken breasts for 99 cents/lb and learned how to can Ugly Chicken!!! And my pantry is just bursting with pre-cooked and canned ground beef and turkey now.
    Wish I could grow lettuce like you.
    Praise the Lord for blessing you with a freezer!!!!!
    I've discovered that Ziploc now makes those reusable silicone bags. Found some for $1.29 at the grocery store.

    18:50 OMG your hair is so adorable with the wide headband like that. You totally are rocking that look even in the wee hours of the morning.
    The difference between dried flowers and dead flowers is the same as the difference between dehydrated fruit and rotten fruit. Do you use a dehydrator to dry the flowers?
    That was an amazing deal on the freezer! But with respect to your family, I think they are wrong. You *should* fill your freezer (but not overload it). At least you should keep some bottles of frozen water in there. It helps the freezer run more efficiently. : ) Plus, frozen water is inexpensive, will help keep the freezer cold longer if there's a power outage, and is easy to defrost if you need the space.

    Cassandra I am the mark down queen! My pantry jars are 2/3 straight meat, almost all pf it marked down from one store that has the best deals plus good meat. It's amazing to me that so many people i meet, who say they can, have never canned meats. More for us! I have also canned various milks. I want to save money for a greenstalk or two. I have much smaller growing space on my deck than you but it's my only space.
    Thanls for all of your encouragement! Many Blessings from Deborah in West Virginia!

    Girl, you are AMAZING! I was just telling my BFF about you yesterday, talking about how you make the most of every sq. ft. of your patio, your time, and every bit of everything. I've never heard of Boxwood basil, but that looks like the perfect thing to grow in a patio setting! Def have to try the BB/basil tea!! God bless you, and thanks for the inspo!

    Tall grasses and the like dry very well. I cut a bunch from in front our building last year, I hung them... Then sprayed them with hairspray to hopefully avoid the messy fall off. It worked!
    I have a huge vase full in the corner of the living room and love it

    You DO want to keep your freezer full. Leave 2" clearance in the back to give it good circulation. Fill the empty spaces with used milk jugs filled w/water (leave room in the jug -8 oz). Will really help w/elec bill.

    Hey Cassandra, I remember you talking about using a gardening planner, to keep tracker of what you have planted where? Do you think you could you a gardening planner flipthrough and give ideas on what you track and why? Also give ideas of what you planted next to each other that keep your GS look really beautiful.!!! Just an idea!!!!

    I have a Montgomery Ward chest freezer that my parents bought around 1976 or so. Still works wonderfully. I won't get rid of it until it actually dies. Even then, I'll try to have a technician save it.

    Drying flowers is a way to immortalize the season. They're dried when they're fading, not fresh, but it's like remembering our elder loved ones in the most recent days we had them.

    You are so enthusiastic I love it! Your family might need to see what you do for them in your spare time. Id say you have great executive skills. You know how to cross-shop clothes, you grow an organic garden in a teeny space, you make your own first aid and hygiene type products. They need to realize how lucky theu are to have you and have an excellent example of how to live a good life! Best wishes from south Texas!
