The generational, outdoor legacy that you have is only becoming more rare (but I see signs of revival). While I know the number one question every will ask after my hunt is, 'what did you get?' It's hard to explain that I "got" 1. experience gathering my bearings being that deep in the woods 2. the opportunity to watch and listen to the woods wake up is unlike anything you can experience 3. animal tracking (sights, sounds, smells) and 4. my mind turns off and becomes fully engaged and in the moment in a way I can't get doing anything else. What a blessing to still be able to get fresh meat. You sound exactly like who I want to be when I grow up!!! God bless you!

For your burger aficionado husband, here is a new recipe to try... Put a sweet pepper, small onion, and a little salt in a mini-ninja and dice very small. Set in the fridge until later. When ready, squeeze all the liquid out of the pepper/onion and add to ground meat of your choice with some garlic, pepper, and smoked paprika, then shape patties and cook as usual.
Oooh, Susan this recipe sounds amazing. I love that its quick and low fuss. Each bite of this burger is going to have the pepper, onion combo (along with the seasons). Thank for sharing, lady! I'll tell hubby this was one from you!
Hey Nikki! Girl you can tell I'm coming from hunting as a total newbie and that I still haven't found the "words" nor the sophistication to hide my pure excitement :) Part of me wishes I could be more refined, but you know, I think showing what I can, and telling it how it comes out may lead others that have doubts that they could ever learn to hunt. If I can do it, anyone can! Rewatching this part made me roll my eyes at myself so I get how crazy (in the good way) I come off!
I want to thank you for the boost to my canning this month! My pantry space was getting cramped so I'd slowed down on canning for a bit. But your Kim chi and slaw recipes will be in process soon! I scored some green beans from my local produce rescue last week; I canned them in quarts with some little Yukon gold potatoes, a quarter of an onion, and some ham chunks that were in the freezer (left from Easter) in ham broth (courtesy of that Easter ham bone!). They'll be delish next winter with some cornbread for a quick weeknight dinner. Homey comfort in a jar!
Ahh, you said “supper” and it made me smile. I live in western Ohio but grew up in Berks County, so those old SEPA idioms still catch my ear. Love your channel, Cassandra. You are warm and engaging and so educational - I learn something new with each visit with you! ❤️
Hi friend! I am such a 'mut' when it comes to my expressions. My daddy is from Louisiana countryside and my mom is a northern gal from the eastern shore of Maryland. I come by it honestly. I'm so glad you don't mind my kind of crazy! :)
All fall and winter we had wild teenage turkeys living in our back yard. They would fly over the fence and roost in our tall redwood tree. The funny thing is, one wild turkey stayed behind in our neighbor's backyard with his not wild turkeys (he has a small farm). The female turkey is happily staying around 7 domesticated male turkeys and she doesn't seem to mind all their attention! Who knows, she may be sitting on eggs soon and hatching out babies of her own! Another great video! May your next hunt bring you a turkey to bring home!
Cassandra, I've been watching you for a few years now and would like to bring this to your attention. You put your finger on top of the lid while you screw the ring on. WE both know that you are not pushing down on the button. However, newbie canners looking in may not be aware of this fact - don't push down on the lid button while you're screwing the ring on (fingertip tight). You might wanna say that out loud while you're doing it. Jus' sayin'. LOVING THESE SUMMERTIME RECIPES! Hugs!
Hey lady! Grrrr, you’re so right. I’m applying light pressure and def not on the botton, but I don’t explicitly say this. I don’t want to mislead anyone so, moving forward I will state this! I do appreciate the gentle way you shared this. I hear ya!
*Remington Arms, now known as RemArms, is still in business and operates out of Georgia - it was founded 200 years ago. Mossberg & Sons was founded in March of 1919, they are NOT the oldest shotgun manufacturer in the U.S., but the oldest "family owned" manufacturer. Almost 100 years difference matters. I do love your content and delivery of information. I see nothing but good things for your channel in the years to come! Kindest regards from Arlington, VA ❤
Hi Cassandra, I am so glad that you now have an opportunity to grow full sized vegetables. I'm very happy for you, Girl. Keep moving forward! Also you look great in hunting gear.
Hey Stephanie! I was so thankful (and surprised) that they offered me a garden spot. Something told me to hold onto to seeds. I really enjoyed the run and gun turkey hunt. I'll be target practicing this weekend and hope to go on another hunt before the season ends. I'm learning so much!!!
Congratulations on a piece of land to garden. I am no hunter but I admire your determination. My cousin who was a hunter tried to get me to get my license. He was a hunter from since he was a kid - crossbow and rifle. Unfortunately he came down with lymes disease and it took a big toll on him, so he has stepped away from hunting. He even leased property in Maryland to hunt. One year he got a turkey on his property. I loved the feathers. I am not a fan of wild turkey. A couple of bucks that he got on his property, he showed me how to track them and of course, I hung out to watch him gut them. Years ago, there was no way I would had hung around for that. He taught me about hanging a deer, skinning it, etc. I just know I have come along way from when I first moved here in PA. He taught me how to fillet my own fish. I remember my first dead chicken, I used a shovel to pick it up. I would always leave it to him. Now it is no big deal.
Hello friend! Thank you so much!!! I can't tell you how much I appreciate that I somehow got into the program ( I applied nearly a full year earlier than when I heard I got accepted). Man, I admire hunters like your uncle that grew up hunting. Crossbow (and limited practice time) means I'll be sticking with my shotgun for quite some time. Lymes disease is no joke and I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle. It's rough that's for sure. I heard that wild turkey is dryer than white, but since I can't raise my own turkey, I'll be so happy to source a wild one (especially since I already have harvested several on my friends farms). Your uncle holds so much wisdom and know-how and I'm so glad that you've had the opportunity to learn from him and observe his workmanship. It's such a gift to have outdoor legacies passed on to you because its only becoming more RARE. I am on a similar journey that you experienced---initially feeling overwhelmed, but now (in some parts of my journey) realizing that my confidence and skillset has grown a lot. Thank you for sharing such beautiful moments of you and your uncle.
Anna, I was crying along with you! Firstly, because I still can't believe I'm actually doing this! Secondly, because I appreciate my cohort and the folks I'm meeting through the DNR program in a way that words can't express. Honey this was a free program that'll be for the next year. They are giving me a life skill that has far more immediate and long term utility than dozens of other 'certifications', 'etc'. I'll be a simple hunter-one that focuses on deer and turkey season for the next few years (for budget and skillset reasons). I hope to pass my shotgun down to my kids and truly give them an outdoor tradition. I am meeting some of the coolest people that I admire and respect in a way I've been thinking, "where have you been all my life". God is good. And yes, the 'Becoming an Outdoor Woman' program through Maryland's Department of Natural Resources is a treasure!!!
I love PRID. It has been a lifesaver. It is great for little kids when they get splinters. I stepped on a piece of glass a few years ago and used it to get it out.
Hi Cassandra. I love the idea of your portable pharmacy! Next time I thrift, I will look for a makeup bag or something similar. So excited(and a little jealous😉😉) about your garden plot! My Dad always had a garden when I was growing up, and my favorite thing was digging up potatoes. What a cool program with the hunting! And what a great skill to learn! I live in Florida and our deer population is pretty crazy. I used to get venison from a family friend and it was delicious. And this will sound weird, but thank you for using the word "quarry"! I haven't heard it in years. Thank you for your entertaining and informative videos. Much love! Mary
@@BecomingaFarmGirl it’s not working for me either. It says I need to have you grant me permission. But my email address is correct I even resubscribed.
You can get the rubber rings for your old bail jar through various online places like Tattler or Red Hill General Store or an Amish store. That way you can get a good seal on your jar.
Congratulations on the in-ground grow space. I wish you much success. You are so incredibly creative with meals. Thank you for the meal idea. Happy belated born day Thor🎉🎉🎉
I have been making an awesome bbq sauce with my grape jelly fail. (It has the consistency of taffy.) I mix ketchup and my grape taffy with some spices. I have had to make it three times. Thanks for pointing out that this method is cheaper than store bought.
Love these chats ❤ love the grocery guides and pantry sheet. So helpful for this momma with 2 kids age 4 and a baby. I love love kimchi made by my Korean friend. Haven’t made it myself tho
I always peel my eggplant because I simply do not like taste or texture. Every time I'm told you don't have to I have a hard time convincing people that I really don't like it. To each its own.
Congratulations on your ground plot! That’s an awesome trade for helping their homestead. The hunting section was also cool. Didn’t know the state had programs like that. I’ve been wondering how to get into things like that to reduce grocery costs and food waste. Thanks for sharing your journey and teaching us as you learn new things too!
I am not a hunter but my husband and other family and friends are. I love your enthusiasm and commitment to really understanding the process! AND I loved your recipe ideas today. Have you sent the newsletter? I just looked and mine hasn’t arrived. Looking forward to seeing your ‘in ground’ garden grow.
Hi Cheryl! I have so much respect and appreciative for the outdoor legacy, traditions and knowledges experienced/generational hunters have---honey they know A LOT and the more that I approach the tip of the iceberg of what they know one side of me is frustrated that the majority of folks don't appreciate them more. And, lucky you to have a hunting husband! Does he hunt year round? And, I JUST sent the newsletter after posting this video so it should be in your inbox now. If not, here the link to the google doc: docs.google.com/document/d/1hySNbPb5Jtk7AjrVZJMQPAT4goGJPCsvcHez41AHdlg/edit?usp=sharing
@@BecomingaFarmGirl Hi Cassandra, thank you the newsletter has arrived! My husband doesn’t hunt year round. At present he only hunts elk in the fall. He will be retiring in a year or two so when that happens he hopes with more time available to him he will expand into other hunting opportunities. He has hunted deer and duck but we didn’t care for the deer meat because it was just too gamey and the duck super salty. It was a very long time ago I’m thinking we could cook the meat now in a way that it would be fine. At the time this Grammy was much younger and just didn’t know how to cook it correctly. With YT I know I could watch some videos and have a very different outcome this time around. Anyway, you are a bright spot in a world that can seem…not bright lol. Thank you for your energetic, positive, and kind self!
You go girl! It does not surprise me that you are learning to hunt. I come from a family of hunters and appreciate the skill of hunting to put food on your table. I appreciate all your tips, recipes and encouragement.
Hello Karla! I have so much respect and awe for hunters, and truly its a shame that the majority of folks (heck, this was me too) don't understand the depth of knowledge and holders of outdoor legacy generational and experienced hunters have. I'm so grateful for this mentorship program. I have target practice next weekend and I hope to go on another turkey hunt the following weekend. Thank you for encouraging me too, girl!
Hi Linda! I am absolutely sticking with hunting (for so many reasons). This weekend I'll be back out target practicing in anticipation of my turkey hunt the following weekend :)
Thank you friend! I was incredibly surprised and appreciative that they did this for me. She’s already teaching me so much, I regularly harvest from their garden and goodness I can’t tell you how much knowing that I’ve had in-ground experience as a gardener before I get my land means!
Hello friend! I absolutely hope to be (which is an end goal of the program). Now, this will likely take me at least a few more years to be able to pass along the basics to someone, but part of outdoor traditions is to pass them along to others. The 'laws and lore' of hunting are a lot, but I'm so fascinated by it!
When I’m making wild cherry bark tincture I use cotton candy vodka to mitigate the taste. For topical use only like arnica and comfrey, I use the 90% isopropyl alcohol.
My favorite store bought baked bean is B&M. I found the molasses sauce beans on the National Food Safety website to be the closest to this taste. I did add a half cup of brown sugar. Oh and you have to double the amount of sauce to make 8 pints. (A canner full)
Hello Cassandra, I'm so happy for your first inland garden! And speaking of hunting, my husband is a licensed hunter, too. He was motivated to get a license because a lot of wild pigs come to our garden and eat our plants. But because he is busy with work, he can't go hunting with his club, and it's prohibited to use the shotgun in your yard. It was to be in a hunting area. So my husband bought a bow and arrow, and last April 23,he hunted his first wild pig in our backyard. It was coming back every night to eat our lettuce with others. Now the meat is in the freezer, we're waiting for 1 month before cooking it as suggested by the vet. Excited for your first catch. ❤❤❤
Even though I have seen tons of wild turkeys all over the country (they used to attack cars in NorCal and Northern NJ when the toms would see their reflection in the side of the car!) I have heard they are very very wily in hunting season! Tough birds to catch!
Also, went to visit some friends in coast Mass and they have turkey flocks that wander around town! I gathered several feathers that i put into a vase on my mantel - they are so beautiful!
Those silicone sheets are a great score! Being a nurse that worked in a surgery center, i know and understand how valuable they can be. Great job friend! 👍🙂
Congratulations on stepping up with your own garden plot and learning how to hunt. I really enjoyed watching you make all the goodies, too. Hope you get your first turkey soon.
Thank you so much! I am so grateful she even offered as she's already so generous to have me regularly harvest from her garden beds. With practice, and more hunts I'll get something soon and I cannot wait!!!! I so appreciate your encouraging words more than you know!
Thanks for another great show! I’m still awaiting to hear when you put out a fantastic Becoming A Farm Girl Cookbook. I will hunt you down for an autograph! No pun intended 😂
I'm so glad you didn't mind me adding that part to the pantry chat. Learning to hunt has been such a rewarding process. I've still got a looooong way to go, but the journey has been fun!
Honey, they taste as good as they look! I'm telling you--the kimchi burger is fantastic and gently massaging your garden produce with a bit of oil and seasonings (herbs) really does pack an easy flavor punch!
Hello friend! Aww thank you so much. My friend completely surprised me with the garden bed and I am so grateful to have 'in the ground' experience. And yes, I am LOVIN' learning to hunt. Is it overwhelming at times (yes-but only because I make it that way and put pressure on myself). Keep tabs on your states DNR (department of natural resources) programs because they might have opportunities like this near you!
Lady you are wonderful!! I love your spunk and personality. I really feel like we are girlfriend chatting over what we are gonna do next. I’m so happy that you have such a good community of folks that share and add tricks and tips. I don’t always comment and I know they don’t all get read but I just wanted to add my blessing to you and all you do!
Yaaaay on the beans! We have none pint of beans left from last year and my garden beans are just popping up so thought I would can some from the store as well. You are soooo lucky to have a store with sales like that on produce!
I heard about canned coleslaw last year and got so excited! I canned several pints and was so happy. After a few months on my pantry shelf I noticed that the top layer was not covered in brine (even though I am pretty sure it was when I got it out of the canner) and has discolored. Now I don’t want to eat it and am sad that I did all that work and I don’t have any coleslaw. 😢 Have you ever experienced this? Did I put too much cabbage in the jar? I really want to have coleslaw on the shelf, but don’t want to waste food, time and energy trying again. Do you have any tips? By the way, I LOVE your videos! I do a lot of cooking/shopping/freeezing the way you do and your videos inspire me and give me ideas and energize me when I am in a rut. Thank you so much!
Sorry about that. This link will take you straight to the google doc: docs.google.com/document/d/1hySNbPb5Jtk7AjrVZJMQPAT4goGJPCsvcHez41AHdlg/edit?usp=sharing
I always feel so full of admiration and truly inspired after watching your videos! Congratulations on earning your garden plot while learning on the 'job'!! I can't get over the fact that you have a FT job, a hubby to keep happy and a house to keep up with while doing all of the kitchen prepping and videos/editing - wow, just wow, and good on ya on that turkey!! You are definitely for more ready than most people if the SHTF.
Hi friend! Aww, I appreciate this!!! There's a lot you can learn and do even without land or livestock and that's all I've been up to these past years, leveraging weekends and evenings to dabble in learning what I can, and sure enough, it does add up. Not all at once, but certainly over time. I'm so appreciative that you, and others keep coming back to the channel even though I don't stick to a posting schedule (its the full-time job that's not youtube part, lol). Times are going to be challenging in the days to come that's for certain, and I can't imagine using my 'free' time in any other way. Thank you for your encouraging words, truly!
You got me with the announcement, jaw dropped, so happy for you and in a place that is probably a little known. The dirt I mean, when landlord finally gave us permission to garden we sadly discovered it was all fill land. Literal chunks of road in my yard double yellow lines still intact. Went back to containers for the food this year. Flower gardens will do for in ground planting up some amaranth and sunflowers this weekend hoping for the very bright contrast. Glad your still learning to hunt, with the overpopulation of deer alone it is definitely a helpful thing to do for the area.
Hi friend! Thank you! I can't tell you how much I have come to appreciate the silver lining in waiting, what will likely be a total of 12 years for a homestead. It's not time wasted at all, because I've got to help others on their property and in turn, learn so much that will give me years of experience I can apply once we have some land. I thought to myself, goodness, when I do start gardening in the ground those first few seasons could be really rough if I don't start getting experience soon. I can't imagine how upsetting working with the land conditions you described must be. It will be a labor of love for the next few years, but the land's fertility can be restored. In the meanwhile, you've got a plan. And yes, learning to hunt has been so rewarding. It's a long journey ahead, but I'm taking things season by season. I'll get there. Thanks for such kind words, friend!
Girl! You are amazing and I get TOTALLY excited over each of your videos, but... I am a NOTORIOUSLY picky eater! Veggies are the very basics, (peas, carrots, green/yellow beans). Meats must be cooked to oblivion or beyond and gravies/sauces must be bland to blah. Your meals look AMAZING but are so far outside of my wheelhouse. Would you be willing to make one video, (just ONE I promise), for those of us that plod along on the humiliatingly boring and sedate side of the street? Spices? Bring 'em on! Sorry for this request but I am a super wienee when it comes to textures, smells and tastes. BTW..., at 61, hum drum years old, I want to be you when I grow up! Have an amazing week!! 💚😊🙃😊💚
My husband and I eat very plain, simple foods too. My husband's stomach can't handle most seasonings (spices would send him right over the edge!) so in most recipes that call for any type of seasoning, I just omit them. Salt and very, very little pepper are what I usually go with.

A tamale pot (under $20 on sale) makes a great hot water bather).
I look forward to these videos every month!
Aww, this is so kind of you to say! Thank you so much. I enjoy sharing and appreciate that you stick around for my latest adventures!
Cassandra,
I've been watching you for a few years now and would like to bring this to your attention.
I hear ya!
Showing each step (including wiping the rim) for newbies is great😊 ..
I learned how to hunt and fish by going with my Dad as a kid. I really miss hunting and fishing. Have a great time and good luck!
Ugh, not me crying over you getting your first shotgun! It sounds like Maryland has a terrific program. I hope hunting brings you years of joy!!
Much love!
Mary
Came for the food, stayed for the plot twist!! 😮 Ain't nobody gonna mess with Cass now!!
Another ingredient that is not common but amazing in cole slaw is caraway seeds.
I seriously need to catch up on cooking homemade baked beans and can it myself. This sounds like a good deal here.
I have tried to sign up for your monthly newsletter as well and have had no luck. Love your videos, would love to have your newsletter!

Cass, you are so delightful! I can watch you all day.
I love that you’re learning to hunt! Such an important skill we should all have.
Ohhh wow! All your burgers look mouth watering 🤤 Thanks for sharing your tips and recipes!
You go girl! So happy you are increasing your ability to become self sufficient!
Awww, thanks for giving my Thor baby some love!!! And yes, I'm so excited to be planting in the ground! What a surprise!!

They use that big box for the scar ointment, because they know no one would buy that tiny tube for $20.
I have been making an awesome bbq sauce with my grape jelly fail. (It has the consistency of taffy.) I mix ketchup and my grape taffy with some spices. I have had to make it three times. Thanks for pointing out that this method is cheaper than store bought.

Girlfriend, I am so proud of you with all you do! You're the best and such an inspiration! ❤
Love these chats ❤ love the grocery guides and pantry sheet. So helpful for this momma with 2 kids age 4 and a baby. I love love kimchi made by my Korean friend. Haven’t made it myself tho
Firstly, happy belated Momma's Day to you! I am so happy to pass this along, and gracious, even more so for a busy mama like you :)
PRID salvation is a really good one to have on hand.
Hunting wild turkey is literally a dream of mine!
Sis is back ❣️
Haha, I know! You know me too well!
Oh my goodness, I don’t know which to congratulate you on, the first in-ground garden or your new mossberg, I’m thrilled for you!
Congrats on the in-ground plot! I hope it works out as wonderfully for you as your Greenstalks. And the canned baked beans sound particularly tasty.
You can do so many things with feathers!
Super happy about your land and the hunting. What a cool mentoring program, and that assortment of seeds was so exciting. Keep up the good work.
WOOQWWW. This video took an important message, to necessary life lessons, to absolute life skills. Thank you!
I LOVE that 'first aid' bag you have!! Not only do I love the design!! But I need to do that as well😂❤ I have a chicken one, but I need a Human one🙈😂
Did you know the turkey nearly was the national bird rather than the eagle?
I didn't until I learned this at my hunt orientation. The turkey lost by just one vote to the bald eagle! Nuts!
Really enjoyed this video. Loved the turkey hunting! And congratulations on your in ground garden! So happy for you. Happy Birthday Thor! Val C ❤️🙂
You looked like a little girl all dressed up in your hunting outfit. Sooo cute.☺️
Shea butter and coconut oil every day helps reduce scars

Linda here…stick with the hunting. A necessary skill when you need it…as long as you’ve practiced before you’ll be fine. LOVE your videos.
Hi Linda! I am absolutely sticking with hunting (for so many reasons). This weekend I'll be back out target practicing in anticipation of my turkey hunt the following weekend :)
Yay!!! I am so happy for you that your finally getting an in ground garden spot!!! I love watching you become more and more of a farm girl!!!
Thank you friend! I was incredibly surprised and appreciative that they did this for me. She’s already teaching me so much, I regularly harvest from their garden and goodness I can’t tell you how much knowing that I’ve had in-ground experience as a gardener before I get my land means!
Another amazing video! You are very inspiring. Never thought to help another farmer to gain knowledge and provide help.
I'm so proud of you for taking up hunting. I bet you'll be a mentor one of these days.
I just love hearing your stories, it looked like you had a lot of fun on that hunting trip. I hope to get the courage to go myself one day!
Prid doesn't go bad. I keep this on hand. Had to use it use it and it works!
Loved the mullein find... makes me excited for your wild foraging video! ;)
Congrats on your new in ground garden journey 👩🏿🌾 and happy hunting hunty!
Girl, I’m trusting you with these BBQ ready preps! I have been underwhelmed with the baked bean recipes I’ve tried in the past. 🤞🏼
Im so excited you have a plot of land!!! I just love your videos so much ❤ thanks for sharing so much with us!
Happy Bark-day Thor. 🎉❤
My husband loved these with hot breakfast sausage.
Loooooooove your excitement!! You're just the sweetest.
Awww, thank you so much. I'm crazy, but its the good kind! :)
Definitely no coupon can beat those homemade baked beans! I’m going to give this a try for my birthday bbq celebration next month.
Canning your own baked beans will be PERFECT for a large gathering!!! And yes, you can't beat the price!
Thank you for recording the turkey part! I learned so much!
I'm so glad you didn't mind me adding that part to the pantry chat. Learning to hunt has been such a rewarding process. I've still got a looooong way to go, but the journey has been fun!
WHAT BRAND HAND GRATER DO YOU HAVE ? / /
That burger looks absolutely delicious!!
Honey, they taste as good as they look! I'm telling you--the kimchi burger is fantastic and gently massaging your garden produce with a bit of oil and seasonings (herbs) really does pack an easy flavor punch!
I'm so proud of you and excited for you!!!
SO cool that you have your own plot. Can't wait to see your bounty!
My homestead friends are too good to me. I truly appreciated her kind gesture.
Thanks for sharing the recipes and all the information. So happy for you and your in ground planting space. I really enjoyed the hunting segment. 🦃
WOW this was a awesome video. Those guys were kind and very professional. Thank u for sharing this.

I’m so happy that you have such a good community of folks that share and add tricks and tips. I don’t always comment and I know they don’t all get read but I just wanted to add my blessing to you and all you do!
What a fun video! Its nice to see a beautiful woman can be a homemaker & a huntress 😊
Loving your enthusiasm!

Hey howdy hey!
Thank you for the tip of the month 😊
You ain't the only one.
Regular breakfast sausage? Too spicy!
It's either in gravy or dip. Dairy for the win.
Taco meat? Cheese & sour cream please.
😊
