My friend's dad had one when we were in high school. Of course it was off limits but his parents went away for a couple of weeks so of course we had to do it. Same colour combo as Hoovie's, but an earlier year with an auto.
Didn't quite do a "Risky Business" but my friend managed to underestimate his speed/overestimate his braking distance. We slid right through a stop sign and into a farmer's field. Managed to get the car out undamaged and drove it home at about 20mph the whole way. Washed it, put it back exactly where his dad had parked it, and called it a night. The perfect crime.
About two months later his dad took it in for brake service and the dealer found a tremendous amount of mud, grass, and even some lengths of barbed wire wrapped around the front suspension. Oops.

Had an S4 manual as well as the last year GTS, also manual. Decent car, well balanced with good touring manners. Large and, well... it's LARGE. If you thought MG's and Fiat's are plagued with electrical issues. These render those 'simpleton machines'. The German's weren't very clever when they decided to put the space shuttle worthy array of relays, fuses and connectors in the ridiculous, underfoot, plywood board under the passengers feet. PLYWOOD. Remember, this was a $85k car. Was in Telluride as newlyweds on a ski trip and my wife couldn't help but saturate said electrical 'plank' with slush and snow. Upon starting, the dash warning lights illuminated in concert with the headlights, windshield wipers and washers having a mind of their own. Started down the hill towards the closest service station and we were greeted by thick smoke eminating from everywhere. Underfoot electrical plank, dash. Everywhere. Car was still new and had all of 2000 or so miles. Was transported to a dealership in Denver where it stayed for 19 days until parts came in. Repairs were done under warranty. As I recall the total was north of $15+k. It was plagued with electrical gremlins and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. Traded it on a new Mercedes 500E. I believe they offered me $70k in trade against the MBZ. Best move ever. That car was everything the GTS was not. Just as fast and 2 extra doors.

    1) In the cheap Porsche challenge from 2004 he had a 928 from 1983. Can't remember what he paid but it was 1500£ or less.
    2) In the Patagonia special from 2014 he had a newer 928 GT with the infamous registration "H982 FKL".

Thing is a money pit lol. My dad had one and recently passed, so I'm looking to sell it off for investments during these low market prices. He didn't care for the Risky Business reference. He liked that it was the car Scarface buys to impress the girl haha. Such a beauty, and so fun to drive... You don't even realize it when it accelerates, but before you know it your doing 100. The suspension is very rigid, which you may or may not like. I love it, you can feel the road.
But finding a mechanic to work on them and then the price of the parts, and insurance... It's too much for me. My dad put about $20k into it a few years ago and it ran for 2 years, now it won't start. Probably electrical.. I'd for sure keep it if it were affordable, but I'm likely going to just sell as is, maybe get a diagnostic done at least. Maybe if my investments take off I will buy it back haha. On an unrelated note, crypto is the future! Prices are low! :p

The steering wheel hub cover, console cover, and door card inserts are not factory. They look like products that a guy in Texas named Paul Champagne produced. I think he no longer does. It looks like you got a nice one. The Interval for replacing the timing belt is 60,000 miles. If this had been maintained at a Porsche dealer it could still have its original belt. Porsche did not specify a time interval. Commonly people use 5 years, but that is unofficial. Unless the car has had heavy exposure to ozone, the belts usually look like new at 10 years (my opinion). I check the tension every year and examine the belt. It's common to change out the water pump with the belt, but Porsche did not specify a service interval. Water pump seizure or bearing failure can be catastrophic to the valvetrain. I know the Wizard is brilliant, but this car has some design quirks that require specific knowledge. Even things as simple as a wheel alignment are beyond most mechanics unless they have specific information as the front suspension has rubber bushings that do not allow the suspension to settle to the proper height for 50-60 miles after raising the front end to inspect the components, although there is a procedure to pull it down. The timing belt job presents some challenges and there are mistakes that are too easy to make, even if you have the factory workshop manuals. I know...I made them all. I've had an 89 S4 for 22 years and at 300,000 hard miles (I supercharged and road raced it) the motor has never required more than regular maintenance and a few oil pan gaskets. Enjoy one of the greatest Autobahn cruisers ever made. This is the only car I have owned that I felt had a soul. There is some unifying force in this car that I feel when I drive it. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

    • @emineid
      @emineid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I am curious about the rear suspension design. This was a somewhat unusual design where a bushing deflected to allow for toe-in during cornering. Do the bushings wear out? Are those special bushings even available from Porsche anymore? And yes, Paul Champagne, I agree the leather work looks like his handiwork (laser cutters and all). I remember e-mailing him about having some custom leather steering wheel cover made for my Honda Accord and he quoted me some price that was up there, as expected.

    • @billbmsn
      @billbmsn 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@emineid Paul's products were expensive but were of the highest quality workmanship available. Most parts for the 928 from Porsche go in and out of production, but eventually reappear at some point. The rear suspension does have the Weisach toe-in effect. On my car, the bushings still seem intact, although I did buy a full set of them years ago for eventual replacement. Porsche parts prices have skyrocketed in the last couple of years.

Horn cover and door cards are not original...but Porsche did do that cloth in 944 and you could buy it in euro cars (I own an 85 928 factory logo cloth in burgundy). It's tastefully done (imho) and easy to replace if someone hates it.
The rear visors are to shield the back window sun (back of the head and neck) for rear passengers in the greenhouse.
The Porsche radio is expensive and nice
Get Roger at 928sRus on speed dial. Rennlist is also your friend. It's not that hard to work on and parts are not Chevy cheap, but it's not Ferrari $$$. Most of us do our own work in the 928 community. 928 owners Club is going to Philly this summer for our annual meet up...FYI
I'll give you $15k when you're ready to dump it! ;)

Suspension: replace with KONI RED shocks substantial upgrade and won't hurt value. The original BOGE rears are hard to get and only slightly less cost. The bushings are all available and should be done at the same time. Have the wizard check the shock adjusters spin and are not corroded...they can be sourced used from a supplier ...but there is an aftermarket solution but you'll have to change the springs.

Your 928 also seems to have what we used to call a 'crooked smile" which is a mis-aligned front deck lid, the gap on the passenger side is slightly wider and it doesn't quite line up with the edge of the fender. this could be from accident damage (bent hinge) or just an adjustment needed.

I agree that it feels surprisingly modern to drive , solid , quiet, comfortable, but with real growl under the hood when needed. And the design is so unique and looked just as amazing in the 80s as it does now. And worth to mention that the S4 was actually the fastest stock road car when it came out. I had a 928 S2 for a couple of years back in the '90's. The best car I ever owned. That V8 engine is fantastic and utterly reliable. I paid 7000 pounds for it at an auction and apart from some new tyres after a year, it cost me nothing. My son was a bit too keen to drive it having only passed his test 6 months before and had already written off a Saab 900 Turbo so rather than cause too big an argument I sold the Porsche and bought a Merc 420SE Saloon which he called an old mans car and refused to even get in it. Great for me. As I said I sold the 928 for 5000 pounds and interestingly it was exported by the buyer to New Zealand where they were fetching very high prices. I long to find another 928 that I can afford to buy but the prices are out of reach these days.

Finally, I have had 8 Porsche’s in my life: a 1972 914 2.0, then six 911’s including bi turbo’s and one 928 and the 928 was the best of them all. Take a 928 to the track and you’ll be surprised how awesome it is.
I am guessing the 928 was too perfect of a car and it drove the 911 people crazy, The fact that a front engine car that wasn’t air cooled might be so great. so somehow internally at Porsche they got rid of it. I think the balance and the handling of that 928 was one of the best cars I’ve ever driven.

What a great preliminary review of your new-to-you 928S4. Too many people - not just reviewers or TH-camrs, but public at large, too - just don’t give certain cars time before they form an opinion. You have to recalibrate your senses to a car like this, especially if you are jumping out of a modern Porsche. As you noted, though, these were impressively modern for a car introduced in 1977, and in the case of the S4, quick by even modern standards. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your experiences!

I drove an '85 928S2 5 speed for 19.5 years and the maintenance? I had to work on accessories now and then, but the car really wasn't that bad. I drove it all over the country when it was 17+ years old and didn't have a bit of trouble.
The timing belt: Porsche recommends every six years/60,000 miles, but I did mine at 45,000 mile intervals. You replace the belt, the rollers, and the water pump and you are looking at $1500-$2000 in work, unless you do it yourself and then it works out to about $500.
Parts: 928 International in Los Angeles has nearly everything and often times has a used part for sale on the cheap. Really, these are not expensive cars if you can do minor things yourself, and the design is so timeless that oftentimes restaurants offered me to valet park mine for free, so they could park it in front to make the restaurant look glamorous...

Retired, I have the luxury of time to drive it weekdays through and over the otherwise busy, two-lane canyons and passes. I've kept mine stock and have the good fortune to have Alpine Autohaus nearby to keep me on the road. Cruise control, starter relay(s), fuel pump and filters have been my biggest gripe over 20 years of ownership having done the timing belt immediately after purchase. Climate control switch replacement was unexpected and R134a conversion was done while there 'cuz it's !@#$ hot here. Sure as heck, that $18 nylon gear on the trip odometer needed changing too. Happy Trails PS: Not even the MotorWeek episode mentions the Weissach axle fitted to this machine. If you do an edit please mention it. I may be why I'm here today.

I had a dedicated 928 Race Car for many years. So much fun! Now I am down to 5 street 928. Such fantastic cars! I have many YT videos of the 928 on my channel. Love for you to watch them. Here is a good primer: th-cam.com/video/cnESejXIDeA/w-d-xo.html

Still own an '85 928S today. The attention to detail on these cars is amazing!

From the early 90s to the mid 2000's I had a 914 .. 912 ... 993 c4s and a 928 s4 .... I loved it ... Such a great car ... about time you got one ... The maintenance was ridiculous but worth it ... I'm curious to see what it will be like now ... As for that interior stuff on the wheel ... Console cover and door pockets ... No not factory ... The console should be leather .... It could very well be Porsche fabric but definitely it has been redone .... When you're ready to sell it ... Let me know

I agree..the S4 was the best looking of the group. I recall riding around Road America in one of these in the late 80s...very good performance for what I considered a heavy (3500lb) car at that time. 0-60 under 6 seconds and 175mph car. They are a pretty complex car, electronically speaking...so expect a little higher maintenance.

Difficult to believe the 928 was debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. Still beautiful, and still looks modern.

When it debuted back in 1977, people actually did popped out their eyes like a from when they stared at the car.

Yup welcome home, porsche is the place to be. The 928s4 as all 928's have the front electric wiring block behind the headlights that are notorious for failing, having cracked wiring, corrosion, and a myriad of other gremlins lurking.
You have a good one, take car of it and it will take care of you.

I’m in love with your 928. It’s absolutely beautiful! That color is amazing and makes it really stand out. I have always liked the 928 as a kid just wish I could afford one.

Wow, so quiet in the cabin. And so much visibility with all that generous glass. And the interior is really nice.

Over the last 10 years I've restored my 85 928. I can't remember where I found it but some man on his death bed wrote a 300 page manual on the torque spec for every nut and bolt on this car. I have it printed out so if the wizard ever needs it 😉. You can also put a supercharger on this for 7000

Mines an 84 but I'm going to be doing the suspension rebuild soon. Any chance you can send that to me?

I wasn't on my death bed, I was sitting on the couch for a weekend after a vasectomy :) . Would be happy to advise the Wizard if he has any questions.

928 was one of my dream cars when I grew up.
These days I'm just happy to wake up next morning.
    Greetings from Finland.
    I had to check:
The cheapest 928 (4.7) 1987 in Finland has about 120 000 miles and the price is about 20 000 usd.
The most expensive one on public sale, is a -93 GTS 5.4, about 50 000 miles and 100 000 usd.
