Saw Hahn in Stockholm about this time (Beethoven’s concerto) and was absolutely astonished how she was already a master of her craft. And she really knocked this out of the park!

This was performed in Tokyo's Suntary Hall on November 27th 2000, which happened to be Ms. Hahn's 21st birthday. Mariss Jansons is conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.
Maestro Jansons had a long career as conductor, notably for the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and he was known for his interpretations of the works of Shostakovich and other Russian composers, as well as Mahler.
Ms. Hahn needs no introduction; she is considered to be one of the finest solo violinists in the world. She has won three Grammy awards and has been recently nominated for another.

Mariss Jansons led the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in the mid-1990s. I had the joy of attending his premier there, at which he conducted Mahler 's 1st, preceded by Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite." So amazing. As if I had never really heard either work before.
The college I served during that period engaged the PSO in a partnership arrangement to attract audiences to annual concerts from our county north of Pittsburgh, and I got to speak with him on several occasions. A great, kind and thoughtful man, and an unexcelled 20th Century Conductor. The world is poorer for his untimely passing.

@@facente Shostakovich was never the chairman of the musical Stalin Prize commitee, Myaskovsky was.
Dmitry Dmitrievich was for a short time an ordinary member of the committee, then expelled for an argument with the chairman and later reinstated -- also for not very long period.
And he knew too well that the attempt to publish a concerto like this could took him again into a big trouble like the one he had with "Katherina Izmailova" opera in 1936 .
He wrote this music "for the desk drawer" and the public performance became possible only after Stalin's death.

Agreed about Shostakovich not being able to have a piece such as this wonderful concerto performed while Stalin was still alive!! And the same goes for his 11th Symphony!! (Which was the first symphony he composed after all of Stalin's associates were no longer in power...and which is one of, if not the most, continuously intense full scale Symphony composed!! A true force of nature that work is, like Shostakovich himself!!!)

indeed. if any at all group was able to translate this kind of musical genius into the abrasive furor of the metal scene ( that is frankly quite apt at translating the despair of our modern times ) it would be absolutely fucking genius. Alas...we are far from any of this kind of performance on Metal stages. Pity. How i wish they would abandon the ridiculous 4 chords and growling scheme...for a more dangerously educated attack. The musician furor. I guess METAL lore is best left to anvils to express themselves. Even Oranssi Pazuzu leaves me wanting. Why can't METAL musicians orchestrate ? lack of superlative talent ? or is it that Metal genre is not taken seriously at all by the classicaly trained ? i guess ...that answers that.

Her technique and spirited playing set the standard for the rest of us. Shostakovich wrote 2 VIOLIN CONCERTOS, and I can't say i understand No. 2, but I've been in love with No. 1 since college. By the way, have you heard Shostakovich's SYMPHONY NO. 9? That's where he gave the one-fingered salute to Stalin, and lived to tell the tale. His memoirs--TESTAMENT--are well worth a read.

Hilary has splendid ears... and she has an amazingly beautiful personality. Nobody in the World of Classical Music world gives encores. SHE does. I kowtow. HH is Queen. Forget that. Goddess. I kowtow

    well that was delicious..
I was slightly obsessed with violin concertos as a youth but some reason this one escaped me..
Then i got into other things and have not listen really to much classical for decades..
If fact I active disliked it for a while.. found the emotional roller coaster too much..
So not sure why I clicked on this except that Hillary is already a legend..
Anyway watched right through and very moved.. A stunning piece stunningly played by all..
What an amazing world we live in too that I can do this in bed with warm milk and a banana.. ;9)

What I love about this performance is that it is sooo different from the conventional interpretation but then it is also so precise. You can literally hear and build the chords in your head. Often times, the breaks are so slurred it is hard to hear the resonance of the chords against each other.
