I was actually there in this concert, and it was genuinely one of the best concerts I’ve been in. What you actually can’t hear in CDs is her absolutely insane ability to communicate with the orchestra through body language and looks, therefore this concerto was imo better than on her album Paris. She and the orchestra with more creative rubati. And she played THREE encores! This goes to the top 5 of my experience regarding music
Yes I agree! I went to her Sibelius concert and it was crazy her attack so so amazing and her sound is so powerful and clear! It was amazing to hear my favorite violinist play my favorite piece live. I hope to hear her play Prokofiev live too as it’s my second favorite piece!
I was thinking the same thing. She seems to be playing with more and more emotional depth as time goes on. Extraordinarily beautiful music from a beautiful woman.
Totally agree. Show the orchestra when it's just the orchestra playing... if it's the soloist playing use the close-medium shot so we can all in be in awe of her bowing and fingerwork!!

I keep coming back to this recording. Most magical 20min I've witnessed in a concert hall. Especially the last movement I initially didn't like that much was simply INSANLY beautiful live in Frankfurt
Years ago the DSO concert master asked me to help him as an accompanist to prepare this piece. It was my first exposure to it and it blew me away. Been my favorite violin concerto ever since.
Ladies and gentlemen, from her album PARIS, Ms. Hahn amazing us again with another spectacular performance of this marvelous piece... And her dress 👗👏👏👏💕🎻
It goes without saying that Hilary is a great violinist. But I want to go further and express my admiration for the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. I love seeing those familiar faces. There are some new ones, too. (the concertmaster, in particular). Of course, Alain, as always, is wonderful.
Fantastic performance! It's a shame the camera wasn't on Mrs. Hahn more. I think they may have focused a bit too much on the orchestra, but that's just my opinion. Still one of my favourite live performances of this piece.
Actually the focus of the camera is a bit unusual but you can see it as well as a guide to listen more intensely to the instrumentation. Because if you see an instrument it is easier to hear it as well which is quite useful in a piece like Prokofiev.
Wow, the entire concerto is only 21 minutes long! This is a relatively short concerto but it’s so GOOD! It’s a thrill to listen to the fast 2nd movement. The third movement is slow and contemplative.
I just watched a recording of her performance more than 10 years ago, vs this recording. It's so fascinating to see her style of playing change and mature even more
I first heard this concerto when I was about 13, when I bought the LP at Woolworth's for 99 cents. It was played by Josef Szigetti, who had premiered it decades earlier. Ms. Hahn makes it much more exciting that Szigetti's rendition. BRAVO!
11:54 there is something chilling and kind of amazing about how this sounds. I've never heard a violin make a sound like that in my life. She shreds that thing like it's an electric guitar.
@@chloen5260no she didn't. the mute has to be in the bridge for that to work. she's playing a technique called sul ponticello in which she plays with the bow directly on the bridge
@@hyperactiveofficial8096 she is playing DIRECTLY on the bridge. I am a violinist, sul ponticello is a very distinct sound (also you can clearly see its on the bridge. I'm experiencing this for the first time and that section gave me chills! I scanned the comment section looking for someone such as yourself who would highlight it.
I will be attending Ms. Hahn's upcoming performance of this work with the New York Philharmonic at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center, NY on January 11th.
I love Hilary's older performance of Prokofiev No. 1, but this new one is excellent too! What drives me crazy is the video not being in sync with the audio, that's just torture.
COO! lost for words. Never heard it before -stunning! Needs many plays to familiarise myself with such complex work. She does that in public - what does she do in private?
Some very interesting aspects of this performance. Different. Great piece of music played with even more accuracy than some of the other great performances by different violinists. That greater accuracy doesn't really change my enjoyment of the music, but it does make me wonder how the heck does she do it!
I haven't heard her play in person for many years. The last time was a concert for the 80th birthday of the conductor at the Curtiss Institute. She performed the Britten concerto marvelously (of course!). The concert finished with a favorite of mine, Prokofiev 5. I don't remember what the overture was.
This is such disappointing camera work. While I appreciate how vital and talented the orchestra is, I'm so surprised how often the camera leaves Hilary and pans to the orchestra during some of the most electric moments of the solo part. And half of the time the camera is on her, it's at a suboptimal angle to even see what she's doing. Musically, this was great to listen to though.
Damn, Hilary is the best as always, but who the hell was recording this?! During some insane passages the camera is focused for such a long time just on violinists in the orchestra doing simple pizzicato or on the flute player or on drums...!
Given classical music is about performance I'm not sure why people are so intent on overproducing performances like this. I don't want to hear bass notes panning from left to right mid line as if this is some prog rock record. Also, I'd like to observe the natural dynamics of the performers rather than the mix some producer chose when balancing the 50 or so microphones used for this recording. I have a feeling this is quite a lot different than how this actually sounded in the hall in terms of the balance between soloist and orchestra... Old classical records are incomparably better than modern ones when producers had only a 4 or maybe an 8 track recorder and mic'd the room to actually capture a sound representing what people in the hall really heard. It's likely they are dynamically modifying the EQ and or level of Hahn's violin at times during this performance which is as insane as it is inane. It's crazy how I can buy old classical records for about $2 a piece and they're far better than most modern recordings.
Thank you so much for posting the concert but my god, that was so frustrating to watch… What the broadcasting people did on that 3rd movement was just tragic. It was already not good but by the end it seemed as though they were going out of their way to completely omit the soloist. Imagine practicing so hard to play such a devilishly hard piece, absolutely NAILING IT in a live performance only for the camera people to be like “yeah, we thought the half notes the tuba was playing were more interesting than all that crazy stuff you were doing over there”. (Nothing against tuba guy, love tuba guy). I know my comment is so disproportionate but as someone who knows the monumental technical demands of what she just did, this just made me so angry lol. Imagine a prima ballerina starting the daunting 32 fouettes in Swan Lake’s coda and the camera just starts panning to get the reactions of the corps de ballet, the orchestra, random person #3, etc. missing the whole thing. This is what they did.
Totally agree. I was hoping for this video because there are just a really old video of her performing Prokofiev. But the scene director was all over the place. It would be great for the orchestra performance, but this is a Violin Concerto, and the camera cuts should focus more on Hillary
Not exactly the same as with ballet, because that's all visual, and music doesn't actually need the visuals to be effective. I was grading chemistry papers while listening and I fully enjoyed what I heard.....I only saw about 1/3 of it. As a clarinetist, I obviously wasn't interested in her fingerings, but then, I wasn't looking at the clarinets' fingerings, either!
@@elisecurran9497 But that's not the point of the comparison... The comparison being made is that much like the pivotal moment that is the 32 fouettes in Swan Lake (in which no camera ever has panned away from a single fouette because, duh), the pivotal moment of the 3rd movement is the development when she's starts flying up and down the fingerboard at an insane speed. At such a similar moment, the cameras just decided to point away from the soloist missing the whole thing, which is bewildering if you have ears or 2 cents of common sense. This is about the medium and the context. There is a video broadcast, of a live performance, of a violin concerto, with a soloist (who probably sold out the concert btw) and the broadcasting people think the priorities here are everything else but the soloist. If you're happy to just listen, I'll do you one better. There's a studio quality recording of this concerto with Hilary Hahn by Deutsche Grammophone. I for one will stay perplexed at the complete lack of common sense displayed here, in this video.
@@h.felixflores8375 I am in complete, complete agreement with you. Why film a concerto performance if you're not going to film the soloist? Just broadcast the audio then. People would still love an audio livestream. But they chose to add visuals on top of the audio, and to have the video focus on everyone else but the soloist doesn't make sense. Imagine if they did the same with the audio - some parts you'd hear the violin clearly and other parts the violin was muted, that's what it feels like. I feel the same regarding World Ballet Day morning class livestreams when the camera spends too much time focusing on the pianist or teacher or random zoomed-in face shots.
