Exactly!!! I used to play clarinet professionally and Shostakovich is notoriously hard sometimes. Reminds me of the scherzo from symphony number 10. Amazing work here. At times it seemed she was rushing a little but it could possibly be the woodwinds dragging a tad.

Valygarx yes I have just started as well and man oh man there’s a lot of great stuff! Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin are great, but those Russian (Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff) new how to compose and have to be my fav so far!! A wonderful never ending well of great music!

Wow the deep notes and the double stops in the cadenza give me chills . Hilary is outstanding, but I also love this Vuillaume violin. (although Hilary could probably make an 100 $ Amazon fiddle sound magic)
I've performed this piece and wow, the difficulty of the 2nd movement makes you LOVE how Shostakovich writes not just for strings but the whole orchestra. Truly such an amazing piece!
The sad, big heart of Shostakovich is here. Naturally, because she is a natural, Hillary Hahn captures the spirit of the music. Her gown is an inspiration of dress design. Mariss Jansons and the Berlin Orchestra make for an exciting and memorable performance.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! This performance is completely mesmerizing. Hahn is great as always. (She seems to have been appropriately happy with the performance). And the orchestral playing and conception are wonderful. The interplay btween soloist & orchestra is like chamber music. I came upon this performance by accident and am just riveted. And what a great piece! It also always blows my mind that anyone can memorize a piece like this. I know that many do (the wonderful Chiara String Quartet has memorized all the Brahms and Bartok quartets - and plays them from memory in concert!) but it always impresses me. As for Hahn vs. Oistrakh...what's the point? There's room to love all the great musicians we are so fortunate to be able to hear on recording and in person. I love Oistrakh but how could that detract from this performance? For me there is a sense of *rightness* to the playing of both of them (which I also find in the Budapest Quartet) that makes for a very very musical experience. Thank you!

Intense internal dialog with one's consciousness and also an appeal, a question addressed to listeners, to people around great composer, Shostakovitch. Out of many performances I've seen, in person or online, I prefer the layering and balance of this one the most as I've actually heard individuals sections before, while hearing her with ease. This also is the cleanest interpretation I've listened too as well. EDIT: With that being said, I will not say this is my all around favorite interpretation, but my god it's spotless and that ranks as the top amongst the great ones because with this concerto it takes tremendous skill and even that doesn't do hahn justice here ... her interpretation is spotless.

Like the first light of dawn, this music opens your eyes to new promises and to all the wonders of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken the loves, the skinned lives and torpor of the sleeping watchmen
Sometimes it strikes me I need to thank TH-cam for supporting this vast repository of human culture. Fiddler and musician who sins in many ways, I’ve Peeked at and enjoyed videos of cute puppies and Elephants painting portraits, God knows. But since a brain injury 18 months back, I had put fiddling out of my mind for a time, knowing the commitment it will take to get back the skills that took five decades to encompass. The music of this young woman has charmed and inspired me enough to come back and face the long road, pick up the fiddle again and show the ungovernable fingers who’s in charge. Playing Shostakovich 5th with several different orchestras over the years has given me the happy opportunity to learn both the second AND first fiddle parts of that symphony, and savor the harmonies and lines of the rest of the orchestra. Now Ms. Hahn makes me eager to understand this work I’d never encountered. How can I thank her enough?
This version is absolutely perfect all along all the movements of this delicate concerto, including the cadenza, of course. What could I add else? This is a reference version.
Hilary Hahn is a gifted violinist that provides that quintessential inspiration to us mere mortals. This performance is another fine example of her mastership of the instrument and the knowledge of the composition. She is also a physically beautiful woman. A kiss from her lips would send currents and oscillations to your soul.
comparing is always a tricky thing, our judgements reflect often more our taste than anything else. and my taste senses a lot of delicacy in Hilary Hahn's play, which can be seen as introverted. but it creates a lot of intimacy, too. just drift off on the tones... and Janine Jansen's play is full of expressed passion, more extrovert and joyful. actually, I find them very well complementary to each other; thanks to their diverse geniuses we can enjoy very different aspects of the same compositions....
Why? Because American people like better Shostakovitch the Fifth and his Festive Overture Op 96. It turns out that both were favorite of Stalin and both were received by Soviet establishment with enthusiasm. What does it tell you about taste of American music lovers?

This also is the cleanest interpretation I've listened too as well. EDIT: With that being said, I will not say this is my all around favorite interpretation, but my god it's spotless and that ranks as the top amongst the great ones because with this concerto it takes tremendous skill and even that doesn't do hahn justice here ... her interpretation is spotless.
My goodness, how it’s possible to play that perfect? Everything just wonderful
Никогда раньше не слышал. И вот... Обалденно!!! Девушка играет как, кто ещё так может? Оркестр на высоте. И запись великолепная, слушать одно удовольствие.
В общей сложности - музыкальный шедевр!
mindblowing playing. Intonation: perfect!
Like the first light of dawn, this music opens your eyes to new promises and to all the wonders of nature. Evocative of powers beyond observation, these pieces pull the strings of the heart, attract nostalgia and awaken the loves, the skinned lives and torpor of the sleeping watchmen
I've just witnessed perfection.
thankyou, i have been searching for the full clip of hahn's for so long!
What a absoutely stunning performance. Long live Hilary and Dimitri.
No words, just splendid! Life is great!
The best recording of this concerto.
Omer Hertz I'll just assume that you haven't Oistrakh
BottomFragger that's not really comparable, the vision is completely different.
Oistrakh/Mravinsky
Great performance of a young great violinist and orchestra of a piece of an even greater composer. Thank you all!
This version is absolutely perfect all along all the movements of this delicate concerto, including the cadenza, of course. What could I add else? This is a reference version.
Wonderful performance for a colossal violin concerto.
My goodness, she was only 21...
She is 41
@@pena1950 This concert was 20 years ago, so she was 21 at the time.
Very few people with her level of talent have ever lived.
She was 20. This was a day before her birthday!
@@violintegral Wow!
My beloved, dear friend Mariss did a great job here as well. A few month before he died we talked about this violin concerto. Hard thing to see ...
37:56 oh hey there piano concerto no.2, haven't heard you in a while :)
Melissa Reed 10th symphony all through the 4th movement too.
Also the short bit at 16:22 hahaha
This is 99 opus. Piano concerto 2 is 110 opus
Hahn‘s performance speaks to the soul, solemnly, gently, and sorrowfully
Wow. Wonder if those other violinists are thinking, what if I'd practiced more... This is brilliant!
I've loved Hillary since her work in The Village. 💖💖💖💖
Excelente apresentação. Esta violinista é especial.
She makes it look so effortless
23:25 - 24:15 makes me forget to breathe. Every damned time.
love this music - beuatiful
Stupendo concerto ! Grande musica e interpreti fantastici ! Hilary super !!!
Wow, I can only describe my state as "in a trance" during that cadenza.
Me too
absolutely stunning.
absolutely wonderful...
RIP Maestro
Hilary Hahn is a gifted violinist that provides that quintessential inspiration to us mere mortals. This performance is another fine example of her mastership of the instrument and the knowledge of the composition. She is also a physically beautiful woman. A kiss from her lips would send currents and oscillations to your soul.
Incredibly Beautiful!
I thank you for your marvellous upload.
I wanna twoset to play thissssss at 4 mil
Sad, Brett is already playing Ysaye 😔
comparing is always a tricky thing, our judgements reflect often more our taste than anything else. and my taste senses a lot of delicacy in Hilary Hahn's play, which can be seen as introverted. but it creates a lot of intimacy, too. just drift off on the tones... and Janine Jansen's play is full of expressed passion, more extrovert and joyful. actually, I find them very well complementary to each other; thanks to their diverse geniuses we can enjoy very different aspects of the same compositions....
Those high notes and bow strikes at 16:20, wonderful
Precioso. Que interpretacion.
Why is this piece not performed more often? It is beautiful!
Why? Because American people like better Shostakovitch the Fifth and his Festive Overture Op 96. It turns out that both were favorite of Stalin and both were received by Soviet establishment with enthusiasm. What does it tell you about taste of American music lovers?
How is this even possible ???
Wonderful performance
wow another great performance.... and shostackovich...is one unique composer
