  • I wanted to combine the footprint of my DeWalt planer and my Rigid oscillating belt sander into one single space. The solution - my variation on a fliptop cart for the shop. The build required one 3/4 and one 1/2 piece of 4x8 plywood, 2" PVC pipe, some hardware, and a little trial and error.
    Note: I actually built and filmed this video at the end of 2019, and the after a more than a year of use - this cart works fantastic and I have zero regrets on my design choices. I highly recommend this project if you are looking to save space in your shop!

    Let me know - With so many fliptop cart designs on TH-cam now, what would you do differently or what design element from my project might you incorporate into your own flipcart?

    This is the first video I've seen where the drawer slides were installed BEFORE the assembly of the "box". I've always wondered why others insist on having to lie on the floor and use their drivers at awkward angles. Your technique makes it so much easier. Nice job!

      Thanks! Honestly I don't know if there is a "right" way - I just tend to do ways that make sense and are easy on my back!

      I felt like the PVC route was easier than the black iron I kept seeing people use. Still working well after like four years. Defintely lots of options out there.

    Although I have already built a flip top cart for my shop, you used some really great ideas on your cart. Gonna re-look at my cart after watching your video. Nicely done.

    Underrated. Very well done. Seen many projects done with fully designed plans prior to build that made the builds easy. You showing your on the fly method worked out better than other on the fly projects I've seen. Nice looking and functional. Always room for unnecessary Walnut.

    • @theimaginationwoodshop5886

      I really appreciate that. I have always found that even when I make plans, there are always changes on the fly, so I figure plan and build as I go with a project like this works just as well. Just wait until you see me do this with my chop saw station this next month! Definitely going to have more unnecessary walnut on it too!

      @@barstad-9591 Are you okay? I see this video really triggered you. I also made epoxy cutting board recently - I'm sure someone has designed that before me as well. In regard to this project, I built it in fall of 2019, and if memory serves I did watch multiple TH-cam videos for ideas, and then modified them to my needs. The main inspiration actually was from a fliptop design where the person used black iron pipe, but I may have watch Mr. King's as well. Who knows and honestly who cares - that's how TH-cam and woodworking works in general my friend, look for inspiration and build. Or you could just get triggered and be hateful about everything you watch on TH-cam. Your call. I'm sure Mr. King, who I just checked out because of your comment - really doesn't care too much about my channel with his half million subscribers. I make videos for fun, maybe you should try it instead of getting butthurt on the internet from strangers. You might feel better. Best of luck to you.

    11:00 Another way to install the power strip here would be to drill a hole slightly larger than the diameter of the cord. Clip the plug off the cord, get a replacement cord from your favorite big box store, and install it. This gives you the same finished look as what you have, without the risk of compromising the strength of your PVC. 13:25 The process I mentioned can be used here as well. 26:10 Add some storage to the side of your cart, opposite where you're storing the sandpaper belts, to store the spindles and throat plates for your sander. As an added benefit, this will add structural stability to both sides of your cart. You can use the drawer at the bottom for the wrenches, allen wrenches, etc. needed for your sander and planer. I have seen a few other methods of making the table spin only 180 degrees, but I really liked your method.

    • @theimaginationwoodshop5886
      @theimaginationwoodshop5886  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm 5'10" and I feel like the sanding height is perfect. I'm not bending, but am still close enough to get a good look at the fine details. I wouldn't change the height on this at all for me.

      Nothing fancy - it's just screwed directly into the 3/4 plywood top in four spots.

  • @kermitfrog6350

    Plywood is dimensionally stable. No need to build for anticipated expansion. Think your recessed castors approach to make use of dead space between the castors is genius.

      🤣 If it makes you feel any better - no tablesaws were harmed in the making of this fliptop cart. When I flip it over at 13:28 - the part where I'm drilling is hanging off the table, but you just can't see it from the angle it was filmed. Believe me - my Sawstop is my baby and I spent wayyyy to much money on it to be careless with the drill. Promise!

      I apologize, I do not. I'm more of a build as I go person. 16:00 into the video I address the clearance measurements and the side boards were 29-30" tall. That's about the only important thing you need - the rest I made up as I went. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for making the video. Real honest and fun, and I found some nifty ideas along the way. But I've gotta ask, especially with the weight of the thicknesser... Hows the pvc holding up? I was ready to use a steel pipe for mine but it's a heaving bit of hardware, pvc would be great but I'm concerned about it wearing where it meets the ply. Loved the vid.

    • @theimaginationwoodshop5886
      @theimaginationwoodshop5886  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! After around 2ish years the PVC is holding up fine. I don't flip it a lot since I tend to have the sander in the top position most of the time, but I have yet to have an issue. I think the dowels help with longevity since max pressure is really only on the PVC when I flip it. My initial design was to use steel pipe as well, but I just didn't have the tools, and I so far I've been super happy with the results. Thanks for the kind words, my editing skills have improved greatly since making this video, so sorry for the quality - but I am glad you found it helpful! Cheers!

    Really enjoyed video, looking to make my own flip stand but not sure what to use as pivot. How did plastic pipe work out since you built it? "On the fly" my kind of style 👍

    • @theimaginationwoodshop5886
      @theimaginationwoodshop5886  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's going on a multiple years now, and I still have yet to have an issue. I do keep it secured with pegs once it is flipped, so the pvc is not under weight except for when it spins. But I still love it, and happy with my design choices.
