Crafting a Beautiful Wooden Bowl
มุมมอง 1342 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, I let my summer helper Brooks take center stage and turn a beautiful bowl from a piece and figured maple. Brooks loves turning pieces on the lathe and taught me a few things on how to produce an amazing piece of art from a piece of wood in just a couple of hours. Did you know the wood squeaks once it gets too thin? Thanks Brooks - I truly appreciated all that you have done for th...

Rabbet: A notch or step cut at the end of the wood stock. Dado: A slot cut on the face of the stock across the grain direction. Groove: A slot cut along the grain direction.
100%. The hard part is just remembering to say exactly that when the camera is in my face. :)
Terrible music
As a new user to scroll saws, I found your channel through your 3 part scroll saw series and I have several questions. Why do you use poplar and not pine? Where do you buy your poplar? Do you sand and finish these puzzles? Finally, where can I find patterns for puzzles? These look like a good way to learn on the scroll saw.
Welcome! All good questions. First I use poplar over pine because it's less sappy and has a lot less knots so less wood waste for puzzles. It has a consistent straight grain, so it holds up well for small puzzle pieces. I buy my poplar at a local mill in my area rough stock. Google lumber yards in your area, and then make some calls. Poplar is also a relatively cheap wood, so you'll get a better return on investment. I do sand the faces of all puzzle pieces after they are cut out with a 220 grit. The good blade means I don't have to sand interior portions. You can find a lot of great patterns online or there are some great scrollsaw magazines out there. That can get you started, but then I also encourage you to play with making and modifying your own designs since you'll learn a great deal doing it. Hope this helps and I wish you the best. Thanks again for watching!
@@theimaginationwoodshop5886 Thanks for the info.
When can i come work for you again????
Sorry I haven't reached out buddy! Once the year has started - life's been pretty crazy, so I haven't been able to get in the garage hardly at all this month. How is your garage project turning out. I would love to see it sometime!
@ I need to get a miter saw before I build my second workbench. But let me know if you want to do anything in your shop this weekend since I have 4 days
You can tell the difference between laser and scroll saw laser has a dark edge. Compare to a scroll saw. I do agree with lasers, becoming cheaper to get for everyone. It makes it difficult for scrollsaw. to compete against that craft shows and fairs
Oh I agree, if you really look you can definitely tell, but I just don't think people care enough to pay the extra money for handmade items nowadays sadly.
Can you do a video on maintaining the dealt scroll saw
Maintanence should be realtively low for this machine. The most important thing is rust prevention honestly depending on your climate. I use Boeshield T-9 Rust & Corrosion spray. Stuff is fantastic and is way better than WD-40. WD-40 will work in a pinch, but the T-9 is a better product because it doesn't attract dirt like WD-40 does. Other than that, I honestly do little to no matainance on the machine. There are little brushes in the rear underneath the motor that occasionally needs replaced, but honestly if your motor goes out or something like that - you are just better taking it into a service station that services that brand. I like the idea, but sadly, I just don't know if I could fill a video with the little bit I do which I guess is kind of a good thing. Hope that T-9 suggestion helps, and thanks for watching!
great tips. thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Absolutely Amazing
An amazing project for an amazing person!
Ha, you didnt 'nail it' you 'screwed it' :P Love dry dad humor getting a reply :)
Like father like daughter I suppose!
What a beautiful idea. Such a simple design too.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm happy you made this video, I'm starting scroll sawing soon and needed this! I have some random pieces of wood, just need to order blades. The only ones in stores are 28TPI around here.
That's awesome and I'm so glad it could help! Make sure you check out my video on blades before this one, because buying janky blades at your local big box store will bring you nothing but headaches.
Great stuff!! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas
Much appreciated. Hope it can help people who want to learn this amazing tool!
Little girl so sorry your dad's a sphincter
Pathetic
And they keep detailed 'logs'. ;-)
LOL! Well done.
Nice work! She didn’t seem much impressed to me.
She is a very low key person, so you will never hear her shout with excitement. I promise she was impressed. :)
I use that in kill it with fire
Love it!
Dont say it like bush fire areas never grown plants again 😅. Plants grow even faster on those lands.
100% agree that fire is actually a great way to revitalize the soil and they defintely will go crazy if not maintained. Fortuntely, this isn't an unmaintained open field, but a maintained bed that will soon have preen and mulch on it. Thanks for watching the fun!
I killed all my weed with fire and now I have the munchies
🤣🤣🤣 Nice.
I don't think this gets to the ROOT of the problem though. 😅
I see what you did there. Sorry, it was more about just PLANTING the idea in your head. 🤣
They will grow back twice as bad.
Technically, what you saw was round 2. Round 1 was a quick burn to wilt and kill. Round was to follow up and ensure the root was dead. Besides, the area you also see is going to get covered with preen and mulch, so I'm not worried.
That’s just false
@@sc1338 please explain.
My dad does this to me all the time. There’s nothing in the world that can compare to the happiness that comes from being in the presence of your dad. I spend a lot of time outside, but the sunday dinners with my family are the most cherished moments. So good to see a strong father daughter bond. Your smiles made my day. Love from italy 🇮🇹 ❤
This comment absolutely made my day! Cherish those moments for sure. Love right back from Texas!
Graet joke when distract someone using power tools.🤔🤦♂️
@rickyedwards5480 🤣 That's why I got her attention first and waiting until the tool was off friend.
Have you thought about using compressed air to blow out the inside of the mini-split when you ahve the filters removed?
@Frankjm520 I have, so sometimes a brush is just easier then going through having the air compressor on. Would work great too though!
This is so wholesome
W dad joke
Suggestion from the peanut gallery. Aircraft seal spoons work great for faring out RTV and seal. Stunning results. Time to scale up.
Interesting. They look like they might work really well. I will say, I love the ball on the end because it stays perfect no matter how I turn it or angle it.
Can you measure your magnetic strips on your peg board (the ones with the yellow strip down the middle) and tell me how long they are? Please and thank you
Sorry, don't know how I missed this comment. The straps are both just over 17" long.
@@theimaginationwoodshop5886 no it’s fine lol, thanks I’m gonna get a lathe and I need a bunch of the strips for lathe tools
Very impressive, Brooks!
If it's over 12", it stays.
Unless it's an exotic, then anything over 4" stays! :) Always need some pen blanks.
Proud of you son. Great job
He did an amazing job this summer! Thank you for having a great kid!
How long did it take you to make this???
The video? Usually editing a video is anywhere between 4-8 hours, depending on the complexity. I try not to keep track. 😁

Right?!? Brooks got skills!
Beautiful bowl! Fascinating to watch the process too.
Brooks, It has been so great to watch you grow. Keep working hard.
With his work ethic, skies the limit from him!
Brooks, I'm so proud of you. Great Job! Good luck in high school.
He did a wonderful job on the block. The finish made the beautiful grain of the Maple really stand out. Well done Brooks !!
Agreed, the finishing paste really made the piece pop.
Looks like my garage. I used to work for a big boating company here in FL making parts on CNC machines, I got tons of “scrap” and haven’t worked there in over 6yrs lol. Thermolite of all sizes, phenolic boards, pressure treated wood, balsa, etc. Scrap on my friend.
I mean, I lost count as a kid how many coffee cans full of nails my grandpa had in his garage. Scrap is treasure right?!
**Cough-Hoarder-Cough** 😉 JK, it's soooo organized😅
🤣 Yes yes - it's a relative term!
That will never be made…
🤣 No one wants to hear that hard truth man! Too soon!
Exactly!!
Exactly!!
I’m building my shop I would like you to see it
I would love that as well! Have your dad reach out and I'm totally there.
@@theimaginationwoodshop5886 sounds good! I’m still working on it, so I’ll let you know when I’m done
If I sent you a few videos or a video, do you think you could edit it for me, for a video…. I have the clips combined, just no elevator music, or captions or whatever
100% Brooks. Happy to help you out. Also, there is a good video coming out Friday I think you'll enjoy. Watch that video and then let's talk about moving forward with yours to edit.
Good job brother now get that shop organized for more space you also need more light led lights can be pretty easy to work with you can plug one into another.
Thanks for watching. Good news is I'm out of that shop into a much bigger and more organized space. My latest video is actually a shop tour of the current shop. Definite upgrade.
good for your daughter! thanks for the info :)
