    • @FindecanorNotGmail
      @FindecanorNotGmail 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It is not about invention. It is about what we use. How we use it. It is about informing people to not be fooled by creepy billionaires' lies that the AI would be in the public interest when it clearly isn't.
      AI does not create jobs: it takes them. AI does not create: it mashes up what humans have created.
      The most shameful obvious lie of all, that I have heard is that AI would somehow solve global warming: when the data centre used for the planned AI projects would require ridiculous amounts of energy.
      The government has all the right to restrict use and creation of weapons, and hazardous materials that can be used as weapons: such as nuclear material, poisons, etc. It is illegal to carry a concealed firearm or a knife in many areas.
      It is every citizen's right to influence government policy.

    • @NikoKun
      @NikoKun 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@alexandermoskowitz8000 Sure, but they shouldn't expect they can tell anyone what to do. There'll be no pause on AI, so it's a pointless thing to ask for.
      They should instead focus their energy on advocating for the societal changes that will be necessary, to adapt to AI.
      AI will out compete most human workers by 2030. Our society cannot distribute the basic resources people need to survive, based on who has a traditional "job".
      They should advocate for an AI Dividend for All! To ensure everyone benefits from AI, and to repay people for the decades of their data that helped train AI.

    • @alexandermoskowitz8000
      @alexandermoskowitz8000 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@NikoKun Without knowing any of the protestors, my guess is they likely know their chances here. That said, I think the focus and motivation for their protesting is around the existential risks posed by future AGI, rather than the short- to mid-term negative impacts of current AI technologies (which are also worthy of discussion). I think the Pause AI protestors are rational and 100% within their right to protest and take unlikely bets when the perceived stakes are as high as literal extinction. Basically, they're not wrong to do what they're doing, even if the protests almost certainly lead to nothing.
      Forgive me if I'm totally off base here, but the tone of your comments suggests that you worry the protests might actually be effective in slowing down AI progress.

    • @NikoKun
      @NikoKun 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@alexandermoskowitz8000 Actually yes, but not in the way you think. It's more because the advances AI will bring are life saving, and I'm counting on them, in more ways than one. As well as they bring us the best chance we've ever had, to break out of an outdated and morally corrupt economy that rewards the greedy and exploitative. So it's more that I'm worried protests like this, if ANY bit effective at moving policymakers to "slow things down", will only increase the likelihood of such existential threats, by increasing regulatory capture, and encouraging AI development to occur more behind closed doors, in secret, or causing us to fall behind other countries.
      I'm not afraid of AI advancing beyond us, because beyond us implies total understanding. As long as we treat it well, there's a good chance it'll view us as it's "parents" in a way.

      "China has stricter AI regulations than virtually any other country. They didn’t even allow chatbots and disallowed training on internet data up until September 2023.
      China has a more controlling government and thus has even more reason to fear the uncontrollable and unpredictable impacts of AI. During the UNSC meeting on AI safety, China was the only country that mentioned the possibility of implementing a pause.
      Also note that we are primarily asking for an international pause, enforced by a treaty. Such a treaty also needs to be signed by China. What I am saying is that it is all human choice, thus about decisions we make, power, poltics etc. The tech doesn't happen on it's own and NO people aren't powerless to stop others from engaging in dangerous experiments. IN NO WAY im I saying any technology that already exists will be completely stopped from existing (unless very small and hidden from most perhaps). It won't be, -at least as long as the current human civilization lasts which given it's current trajectory it might not.

    • @jKLa
      @jKLa 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@gerdaleta But we can certainly choose how to move forward as well as how even how to allow use of existing technology. Of course any regulation might be resited and might lead to conflict, but that is ultimately all up to human choice as well. People do NOT all agree and human techno futuristic extremists do not have a monopoly on power. Human civilization's have also come and gone before.
      But humans certainly choose WHAT and HOW FAR to take a technology, and how even to use or not use existing ones. It is on us and our future depends on it. It is politics and social values in other words, -nothing inevitable about it!

    Hunter gatherers once protested agrarian societies. Luddites protested factories. Horse and buggy enthusiasts protested automobiles. Letter writers protested the telegram then telephone. People are always going to protest progress. It's too late people, AI is here and it's the future. Many of us have lived long enough to see cell phones and the internet change the way we interact as humans. This is just the next wave. People have survived them all. All I see is a bunch of people protesting progress and scared of the unknown. Humans have repeated this for thousands of years. These are the new Luddites.

    • @alexandermoskowitz8000
      @alexandermoskowitz8000 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      A counterpoint could be that past “luddites” effectively shaped the regulatory landscape around certain technologies in a positive direction. (Sorry, at the moment, I can’t think of good practical examples of this to validate my point)
      In any case, if the Pause AI people believe the development and deployment of AGI will directly lead to human extinction, then it’s rational to protest, even if the probability of a pause happening is low

    • @DJStyles
      @DJStyles 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Humans are the No. 1 cause of eventual human extinction. Our work so far after a few hundred thousand years has led us currently to the 6th great extinction on this planet. That's more of a threat to us than anything else.

    I'm against algorithmic plagiarism. At least, that is what I think all people should fight--amongst other things related to other digital jankery. Overall, computers, digital codes, and new technologies are supposed to HELP MANKIND AS A WHOLE. But these things do *not*. Instead, they favor the WEALTHY, the powerful, the globally influential. In the meantime, the remaining bulk of humanity falls deeper into poverty, hopelessness, and "invisibility".
