It’s not a sign of our economic times …back in the 80’s they were already stealing copper cables from construction sites etc…. The thieves were willing to die for it, because we found one body on site at the location I was working.
In West Virginia, people go into abandoned mines looking for copper. Some never come back out.
True. This is just a new opportunity to get copper.
Nothing new, older homes have been stripped. We had a hunting camp off the beaten path in the Catskills mountains and the copper piping was stripped from the building during the winter.
Bidenomics and criminal justice reform aren’t helping the situation though
So much for building infrastructure… until governments can build tamper-proof EV stations, just forget EVs altogether…
Tamper-proof charging stations are going to further increase your cost of charging your vehicle. All these costs are going to be passed down to the consumer.
Imagin being on 2% batteries make it to the charging station only to find they cut all the cords.

No excuses for the thieves but the bigger problem is the dealers who buy from them. No buyers, no thieves.
Man one can’t have anything work right without someone trying steal it
precisely, it already happens to anything and everything, people on this ev crazy must be high on somethign
Doesnt that shed light on another problem, that reporter said "theives will also target homes to take their charging cables which only contain a few dollars worth of copper, but cost 3 thousand dollars to replace". Why does a cable that contains a few dollars worth of copper and lets say with the copper, rubber, connectors and a few other items to make the cable costs say $100 at the most for materials and say $100 at the most to manufacture and lets say with the sales and other costs of say another $100, so to make profit that cable should be max $500, and I was being kind with the material, production and sales costs. So why does a maximum of $500 cable go for $3000, isnt this big business like tesla ripping people off by hiking prices of cables, $3000 you could buy a full second hand car for that.
There should be a law that if you, as a recycler, are caught with any of these cables, the fine is $10,000, first offense. $15,000, second offense and third offense your business license is revoked. That will stop it.
Excuses! Excuses! The bottom line is CA and its liberal crime laws contribute to these activities. Just pathetic.

Aluminum wire. That wire doesn't pay enough to get stolen.
You have to strip the plastic off to sell the copper and once you sell the copper, that qualifies as #2 copper not even close to $3 a pound. Once you put in all that risk and work for what? For $30-$50 dollars? Wow what a steal!!!!!
Why would thieves leave so much of the cable still hanging? Half the length is still there. If you’re gonna steal copper wire, at least steal the whole thing.
These charging kiosks will undoubtedly be redesigned since this threat drives a stake at the very heart of electric car viability...if people can't recharge, their vehicles are useless.
