@@vzuzukin Lenovo is hot stuff right now, they’ve been tempting me for many nights now, so many hours of sleep lost, almost took the hook last night but was so tired I fell asleep. Just as well as this morning I discovered the AMD version is finally available. Pleasure overload baby sexy stuff yeah baby yeah
That's great , I'm upgrading the memory and storage , so I'd appreciate if you confirm that the crucial ddr5 5600 modules are compatible ( they had problems with 2022 model), and would know if you'd recommend swapping the 1tb for a 2tb crucial p5 , or just add a 1tb one ? Appreciate your advice🙏
@@abzeed the included drive is a 980 pro OEM. This is a better drive than the p5. Use the p5 as a second drive and keep the original ad your windows drive 👍

Just found your channel yesterday. I've been trying to research myself as I desperately need a new laptop but its giving me an absolute migraine with all the conflicting information I've found. I've gotta say your channel is AWESOME. The way you give unbiased opinions and actually test all the different aspects of the laptop, really showing the ins and outs of its performance is super helpful. Keep doing what you're doing!!!
This review is epic! The BG3/CP testing in different fan profiles was way more useful than most other reviewers showing rasterized performance charts. I just ordered a Legion 5 Pro AMD with a 4070 and I'm planning on playing BG3 on there. I'm definitely going to test out silent mode + DLSS.
I agree. Bar charts don’t show you how a game actually runs. Not that useful for a user in my opinion. I have some gaming videos coming for this laptop. At least 2 vidoes
@@TechGuyBeau they also don't take into account real world use and things that actually make gaming on a laptop more pleasurable (less noise, less heat).
Very useful. thanks for for this, i prefer a quiet computer whenever possible, and try cap my fps on my desktop so the fans and card stay silent 60-100fps depending on game (running on a super ultrawide so can be demanding). Also the battery life depending on use is good to know, thanks again. Sadly Startfield(on desktop with a 7900xt) is not one of the games where even capping at 60 makes it stay silent.
Love the way you cover every nuance of this laptop. Has RAM upgradeability, all metal supreme build quality, lovely 16:10 matte screen (hate reflections personally), excellent keyboard and trackpad, all the ports you need, fantastic thermals and for someone who really cares about battery life whilst retaining the ability to game AAA titles near silently at respectable frame rates, it's hard to find a flaw. Laptop of the year for me. Wish this launches in India soon.
@@sameerparihar4350 Not a clue thus far. If it does, as a value proposition, this needs to be priced in the vicinity of 1.3L INR, esp with a surfeit of capable previous gen Legions now selling below 1.1L. There's competition from laptops with 2K and 3.2K OLED screens with 100% DCI P3 color gamut in the sub 1L price bracket esp from Asus.
Thanks dude. I’ve been getting a LOT of requests. I’m going to do some dedicated gaming videos now (external game capture) I have 12 games already lined up
Super happy to see In-depth. I've been laptop hunting for a month now and it has been so hard to find details on upgradability/reparability, so thank you very much for going over these details.
Your channel is epic. I think yours and Jarrod's video completely details out everything that a consumer needs to know to make a informed purchase. Thanks and wish you all the success!
You tested dual-sided nvme in each m.2 so clearly, well done! Great details. The one thing I don't see others do is to confirm if USB4 ports support eGPU so you can use a video card with 16-24GB at home/office in eGPU enclosure.
Wanted to thank you for your excellent and detailed review. I've had my Legion Slim 7 for 5 weeks now and it is incredibly impressive. Quiet even when gaming. Beautiful screen. Great in productivity. Honestly the best gaming laptop I've ever bought! (I've owned many over the last 15 years). Cheers!
Just got the Slim 7 with Ryzen 7, 4060, 32GB ram, 1TB ssd and 3.2k screen. Its absolutely beautiful and I'm loving it so far. Thanks for the reviews and answers :)
Just got mine two days ago. Way better compared to intel version (13700H, 4060) which I also have. Browsing/watching youtube I am getting 10-12hrs. Design work (autocad, sketchup) I am getting 6-7hrs. Overall very impressed with built quality, battery life and performance.
I have the exact same machine with 32gb of ram , 3,2k screen and I added a 1TB Samsung 990 Pro as the second NVME to my windows 1TB SSD which is SanDisk (WD PC SN810 SDCPNRY-1T00-1101) , I'm loving it too much , it is a beast of computer and I love so much the 3,2K screen , it is beautiful , amazing colors , sharp images , clear texts , just awsome. I did also the Cinebench R23 in performance mode for single core the score was 1758 and for multicore 17469.
Awesome, thinking to buy one the same build , I was between this and Pro 5 , but after reviews and also Beau recommendation Slim7 its just more premium built and performance wise almost similar , I wait for Black Friday to snap one 😊maybe it get down again ,was 1150£ couple of months ago in UK ❤
@@nrogo That's a great choice and 1150£ is really a bargain ! other brands charge you much more but for much less performance and hardware! Lenovo is really doing a great job with the Legion series!
for the 3.2k screen, when you game do you set the resolutions down to 1600p ? if so, does it get blurry or hazy like they say since its not native or it aint an issue?
@@gamestark9894 Hi , I don't game so I can't respond to your question , I use the 3.2K screen for editing photos and every day use , but as far as I know , there won't be any problems whatsoever if you are going to lower the resolution on games , because you can always decrease the resolution of a screen like 3.2 but you can never increase the resolution of a screen that is full HD 1080 for example, what I want to tell you is the problem exists if you want to increase the resolution of a screen that is not capable ( for example watching a 4k video on a 1080 screen) and not the other way around. Imagine seeing a video for example on TH-cam which is HD, you watch it on your screen in HD, as if the maximum resolution of your screen was 1080, so your 3.2 screen behaves like a 1080 one, so there is no problem whatsoever.
My legion slim 7 will arrive in a couple weeks. Got a pretty nice deal with black friday sale direct from lenovo. I'm coming from a 13" macbook air that lasted 10 years of daily use. I wanted to move to windows due to software limitations of ios. I wanted a laptop with comparable form factor and build quality, without sacrificing too much weight and battery life. This laptop is exactly in that middle ground I was looking for. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I did want something that could play decently well enough when I'm in bed and have an hour or so to kill. A blend of portability, battery and performance were my priorities. One thing I was concerned about was portability coming from a 13" to a 16". But I noticed as screens got bigger, the chassis got smaller. So even though I'm going up 3" in screen size, the laptop itself is not much bigger than my 10 year old 13" air. Can't wait to get my hands on my slim 7.
Amazing laptop, thanks for being one of the first to review it. I think this is it and ill pull the trigger once it goes on sale like its Intel counterpart. A brilliant piece of machinery that serves portability, design and function in one package
Great review as always. The Phoenix Apu's are the reigning king, combining high performance 8 true Zen 4 cores, with amazing power efficiency and the ability to sustain super high clock speeds. Battery life is top notch as well as shown @22:00. The 7840HS coupled with the capable 12 CU Rdna 3 780m with decent DDR5 ram speed (the faster the Ram, the better. This 5600 DDR5 is about as good as you can get for a regular laptop, though handheld variants get the much faster Lpddr5x at up to 7500mhz, which makes a big difference for the Igpu) that is the perfect Igpu for gaming on battery for potentially a few hours (anywhere from 2.5 hours to 6 hours depending on the wattage used). The 780m is more than capable for the most demanding Emulators like PS3 (Rcps3) and Xbox 360 (Xenia) or Switch (Yuzu or Ryujinx), and can play modern Triple AAA games at lower settings (and potentially resolution) with respectable frame rates. The only downside to the 7840HS is that it can't be Undervolted. Only the 7940HS can be undervolted, or the regular Zen 4 Dragon Range Cpu's like the amazing 7745Hx and the 7845Hx and 7945Hx.
Just bought this machine last night (thanksgiving) and waiting for it to ship. I was going to get the XPS 15 but i cant be arsed to deal with the shitty power/heating issues that it has. I spent $1500 on this laptop (32 gb ram, 512 ssd, Win 11pro) and have heard many great things. I cant wait till its delivered!
I really wish they'd offer the AMD version w/ the 4070. I haven't seen that available. Oh well...My gen 5 (10750/2070S) is still doing well, but I couldn't pass up the deal on this. 1290 to my doorstep. Hope to have it in 2 days. Another ram stick for it on the way as well. Cheers
Thank you for making these videos sir! I have been researching to buy my first gaming laptop for a while and your videos help me understand the PC gaming process.

In terms of price to performance which laptop would you consider purchasing out of the following: Lenovo Legion 5 Pro Ryzen 7 7745hx rtx 4060 for $1300 USD, or the Lenovo Legion 5 Slim Ryzen 7 7840hs rtx 4060 for $1530, or the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 Ryzen 5 7640hs rtx 4060 for $1350, or the Asus TUF Gaming A16 Advantage Edition Ryzen 7 7735hs rx 7600s for $950?@@TechGuyBeau
I have a video on the i7 model. I did a head to head with some people too Where I am getting -9.3 on 1080p 60 TH-cam he was getting -14 or so (similar to my tests on intel). So battery life should be about 40% better on amd in mixed use tasks
thank you for this review. I was hesitant to get this in 2024, and yours is the only review up there. I'm surprised. It is perfect.. as the title of your video says. I'm just wondering why nobody else reviewed it... I got the 3k at a very nice price in Mexico and it is much better that what I expected. using it mostly as a creative professional.. 3d modeling, sometimes large architecture files and graphic design.
I have the option to choose between the Legion Pro 5 Gen 8 and the Legion Slim 7 Gen 8, both with the RTX 4060 and the 500 nits Display for about the same price. I guess that's a no brainer for the Slim 7 then or do you see advantages of the Pro 5? Thanks for the awesome review by the way :)
Thanks for your review! You're the only one I could find on this exact laptop, subbed for the follow-up gaming results, can't wait! I had one question: is it possible to run the laptop completely silent (no fan) when doing light productivity work (browsing, TH-cam)?
It doesn’t use a fan when doing those tasks yes. Heck, even in games on silent mode they are quite quiet. I show silent mode gaming extensively in my follow up that will come soon
@@dracoxruiz2563 I don’t have either of those but I did have an x16 and have a full review. The x16 is nice but it’s way too expensive. This legion gives you more for less
Amazing video! Thank you for the good amount of information and the fact that you showed the temps and fan noise during the gaming test. Just bought this machine because of your good testing and good advice. I also read some tests to check multiple sources. But all have the same conclusion.. it's a nice machine! So I'm very excited for this to be on my doorstep soon. 😊
This was a video a was waiting for quite some time. Thank you so much for reviewing this model. I have few questions about the noise and usb-c charging. Do you think the laptop is suitable to use in silent environments like a library when doing light tasks such as document editing ? Also, if you have tried it, is it possible to charge the laptop with a 65W + powerbank ? I've heard that the usb-c charging doesn't always work with 3rd parties.
@@Genezilla you can also get 100 PD small usb chargers. That is probably the best if you also want to be able to game on silent over usb c :) Just make sure it’s a single port, as GAN chargers with multiple ports typical split the current and I’ve found they are troublesome
I have the Legion Slim 7 Gen6 with a 5800h and 3060 on the 1440p 165hz IPS, and (18 months on) it's been fantastic - gorgeous machining on the metal frame. I upgraded the RAM to 24gb (8gb soldered + 16gb) and added a 2nd NVME drive. Just like you noted in the video, I use it on quiet or balanced mode basically always, including game (not that I'm trying to play the most taxing games - I leave those to my desktop) and this is where I'm happy to tweak some settings or use DLSS to get the best balance of sufficient performance and lower temps/fan-speeds. Honestly, it's still performant enough used like this (and I'll keep it a while yet), but this new model seems to just crush that sweetspot of efficiency and good-enough performance (with some tweaks). Very attractive laptop, though I'm a little skeptical about the real world battery life vs your hypothetical estimates.
They aren’t hypothetical. The battery draw is shown in hwinfo, and you can keep watching it I did testing against me l7i slim. And then with other owners. There is always variability, but long story short, this amd model has great battery life As for the performance side I have a gaming video soon that I’m recording at the moment. As you say, gaming efficiency at low watts is staggeringly good. I game on silent most of the time
@@TechGuyBeau I saw the battery draw in hwinfo - it was the extrapolation about which I was skeptical; whether the projection holds true in practice. I'm sure it has great battery life - I'll be looking to see verification of just how good from multiple sources and testing. Looking forward to the gaming video - will definitely watch. Cheers
I bought mine (16APH8) immediately after watching this video. I tested the battery immediately - curiously when on quite mode + 60hz + battery saver + dGPU turned off, I am never able to get 6 watts discharge rate, its always 10+ watts, even when I limited power to CPU to max at 15%. As a result my battery life is around 6 hours instead of 10+ hours as others got. I wonder what is keeping draining the battery...
You probably have a lot of bloatware. Remove software like GeForce experience, mcafee, etc. Also check your startup apps in task manager to make sure a bunch of stuff isn’t starting on boot
You have convinced me, I've bought one 😊 I was hesitating with a Pro 5 with the Ryzen 7 HX processor and RTX4070 for more money. But as a content creator, I wanted this DCI-P3 screen. I hope I was noy wrong and that I'll be able to edit 4K 10bits video.
@@TechGuyBeau Sure. And I would have got the 240Hz without an hesitation if the full DCI-P3 was not available. I shoot SLOG and such so a larger color space is much appreciated. Just one question : in your opinion, is such a laptop sufficient to edit 4K 10bits ? (I can still cancel my order if it not the case)
@@pierre1509 easily The 7840hs is an incredibly capable cpu. And encoding with the help of the 4060 is amazing Remember, you can install nvidia studio drivers instead of game ready drivers (these still work for games anyways) and get much better rendering performance
I opted for the cheaper screen because it's brighter and has great rgb performance and decent enough performance across the other profiles for video editing and photography
be aware of modern standby sleep issues, and the fans and connector leds will spin and light up. this happens even when the notebook is in shutdown state when "quick start" is enabled. overall, a decent notebook but with major concerns regarding firmware/hardwarw compatibility.
i have been really struggling with this laptop, so many driver issues and conflicts with Nvidia (including BSODs happening with the hd audio driver) and loads more extra issues like my speaker just...stopped functioning, and then the drivers causing boot from sleep conflicts. Been really hard work to be honest and i am looking to see if Lenovo will replace, but im scared the intel versions have crappy battery life?
I came back to this video to see if anyone had these same issues. Mine has been seen on site and sent in twice in the last two weeks with hdmi issues, slow booting into windows, and display drivers issues with my gpu. Its coming back one more time today and hopefully its fixed. If not im gonna try to get lenovo to replace it.
1:14 48GB and 24GB laptop RAM sticks are popping up in China. Do you think you can put 48GB 5600Mhz RAM and make it 64GB in total? I don't know about the bios but 7840HS definitely supports that as per AMD website.
The only thing about the Lenovo Slim 7 that I don't like is the lack of Windows Hello IR camera option. The fingerprint scanner is not in a convenient location!
It's been tested before, if different types of RAM is mixed, then the 1% lows in game are worse. For example 1R16x together 1R8X, maybe even dual rank together with single rank. What would be fastest matchings 48GB DDR5 module for the 16GB soldered RAM?
I have one on order now. I took the RAM upgrade option to 32gigs, and upgraded to the 1TB SSD, but I kept the 2560 x 1600, 500 nits screen. I am actually getting the laptop for hybrid reasons, like video editing and AutoCAD, etc. I am new to it though, and wasn't really sure if I wanted the higher refresh or higher resolution. It's not to late to adjust the order, if anyone would like to offer their perspectives as advice I would be thankful.
I have one. I owned a HP laptop before. I don't play games so it might not count to those consider it. The build is a bit cheap. Its flexy compared to my 4+ years old HP. Kinda weaker in terms of keyboard and feel. When I write on a word document there are some times when the lines go white until you type further (honestly don't know why). The build feels nice but I feel like it will last less compared to my HP. The hinge is better then HP. Design is beautiful, but as someone who just regularly uses a laptop for work and just for coding, it might be better to consider something a HP or Dell. The coding IDE is all good, and I haven't properly tried Unreal Engine on it. As someone who doesn't play games, the fans get very loud especially when you plug in the charger. The battery life is just as bad as my old HP, may last a little longer but yeah. A mac might be better for you, even for coding. The top fan sides gets hot for no reason as I use word docs and watch on youtube videos. My experience on my first Lenovo is not too bad but I've gotten use to the annoying stuff. I still think you should consider other laptops.
Is this laptop suitable for music production. I am concern about the fan noise. Is it too disturbing ? music producers need to focus on sounds, so if it creates so much noise, it will be disturbing.
@TechGuyBeau Can you _please_ boot up a current Ubuntu image, go anywhere to play some audio and see/hear that actual audio comes out of the laptop speakers? They shit the bed w/the last AMD slim 7...no audio comes out of the builtin speakers in linux. I'd been thinking of getting this one but not if they fucked it up like the the last one. Best Buy doesn't seem like they are going to have this sku so I can't just walk in with an image and do it myself.
Still waiting for this variant to arrive in Philippines. They said it will be available by May 2023. Currently its already October and its nowhere to be found.
Just got this laptop and my only gripe, which is not insignificant, is how warm it runs even when idling. The battery is at 37-38c when idling which the Vantage software indicates is high. In contrast my 2022 Legion 5 Pro with the 6800h and 3070ti has battery temp of 28c when in idle. Other than this, the laptop is great. But I really do not want a laptop that runs warm when idling!
I'm trying to decide between this and the Lenovo legion slim 5 14 OLED... I really liked the OLED screen but I wasn't crazy about the keyboard and speakers...
Hi. I live in the UK and was considering ordering this form their official website which states 2 weeks shipping estimate. However ive heard online that this is a lie and that it actually takes several months. How was your experience with ordering it?
Dude, I am returning my Slim 7 due to a strange fan issue. Basically at idle, with the CPU sitting below 40 degrees in Silent Mode or Custom Mode, the fans keep ramping up to 2000 rpm for 2 seconds and then it goes back down to 0 rpm, and this repeats every 30 seconds! I tried resetting the laptop, uninstalled Vantage and replaced with Legion Toolkit, and nothing worked. I tried downloading the LegionFanControl but it does not currently support the Slim 7 2023 version. I wouldn't have minded if the fans were constantly running at 1000 rpm for example, but the constant boost to 2000 rpm and then back to 0 is unbearable! During gaming it's fine as the fans constantly run so that's not a problem, it's when I'm browsing the web or typing up some notes in my very quiet office it's extremely annoying! Someone on Reddit confirmed that they too have the exact same issue! Lenovo have messed up here!
It’s always going to happen. Most companies have 5-10% issue rate in laptops. If you sell 10,000 slim laptops, your definitely going to get a few bad units here and there
@@Cryptolorian no. But one solution is to disable cpu boosting in windows. This is a relatively useless feature in my opinion and cusses excessive noise
@@TechGuyBeau Thanks, but I already did that, used the registry to expose the option in the power plan and disabled it as it lowers temps when gaming by 10-20 degrees! I just did some more troubleshooting and guess what? It’s the charger! Vantage reports the battery temp is high (36 degrees) and this issue only happens with the original charger is connected , even though the battery is in conservation mode and not being charged! I guess it generates too much heat whilst connected to the charger and keeps setting the fan off every 20-30 seconds! It doesn’t do this when running on battery! Next step is to connect a 65W charger and see if that also causes the battery to heat up! Will update 👍🏼
Was that a dock or just a regular usb-c charger? The community is noticing that you cant charge the laptop with a usbc docking stating that provides 100W. But it charges using a 65w only charger.
In case you are planning soon a comparison between Slim 7i and this Slim7 I would like a bit more details about HWInfo battery consumption numbers between these models at idle/identical load ... I have a Slim 7i and never saw below 10W (average of 15W playing this video in silent mode) but my screen is 3200x2000 compared to yours ... Thanks
It stands to reason that the iGPU from AMD could draw more power than Intel's since it is more powerful when stressed but in such cases the dGPU would take over anyway. So in idle/light 2D apps does it still draw more power than Intel's XE or less? If so, the main Ryzen CPU is so much more power efficient than Intel's to offset the higher power consumption of AMD's iGPU? HWInfo has separate numbers for all these, I wonder how they compare ...
As it stands , just the fact that the AMD model offers equal if not better performance and has better effeciency, better thermal management, the best igpu in the market and a better battery life ( even if marginally better) at a lower price point , makes it the undisputed better choice.
I prefer the Pro over the Slim for a little better thermals. Dont care about .25" thinner (dont understand why anyone does either). Plus, mine sits on a 2" thick cooling pad so Slim is irrelevant for me.
Not sure if advanced optimus to blame, but 33W idle drain from notebookcheck seems closer to reality for 2k display model. Even with absolutely nothing and dGPU off, power usage is still 9W minimum, never less.
The 2k model (shown here) and the 3.2k model (I own but didn’t show) bot should idle the same. Doing tasked like TH-cam should also be about 12 watts or so. Come checkout my discord or the legion discord if you need tips. Loads of users there all with super low power draw
that's only what Lenovo has tested and offers as a buying option, but the ram is only limited by the processor specs and operating system (says also lenovo in the spec sheet). The Amd Processor can handle much more ram, but to this day I've only seen single ram sticks up to 48gb max, so right now you could take it to 64gb (16gb +48gb)
I gotta be honest my guy.... I didn't even consider this laptop before today. I need to be able to do some light gaming at hotels without killing my bank account. This seems to hit the sweet spot! Definitely going to wait until 10% Rakuten and pull the trigger! Good point the dual channel part of DDR5.... had no clue! Thanks!
@@TechGuyBeauI just bought last night with 11% Rakuten discount! Just paid $1350USD excluding Rakuten savings...winning! You think this game would play Starfield good? They just implemented DLSS/FG... although it's in Beta
5600mhz clocked down to 5200 is on board. You can use either a 5200mhz or a 5600mhz in your SODIMM slot. I ordered the slim 7i and crucial 16gb 5600mhz ram. If it arrives I'm gonna update if its fully compatible. Should be, as many people on reddit say.
@@abzeed I have the Lenovo Legion Slim 7i, i9, 4070. Ram i ordered is Crucial DDR5 5600 16GB SODIMM. I received the Laptop today and installed the RAM. It takes a liiiittle bit longer to Boot on the first time (somewhere i read, that it tests the functionality of the RAM). Works perfectly. Showing 32GB of usable RAM. And the Laptop is an absolute beast. Video encoding, compared to my 2016 Acer Laptop is about 50-60 times faster on this one. From 18-24hours per Bluray to 20min
I have this laptop and extreme battery drain when turned off since new. Laptop loses 2% battery every hour when switched off. I disabled Win11 fast boot, disabled usb charging, using real shutdown not hybernate or sleep. Laptop loses around 40% battery in 24 hours when switched off. Have anyone else experienced this? AMD Ryzen 7 7840, RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD.
@@TechGuyBeauWhat do you do with these after you have finished reviewing? I’d sleep with them all but only if they’re metallic, I don’t like cheap plastic.
I've got my legion slim 7 last week. Generally I'm quite satisfied with the purchase after a week of usage. The only gripe is that it doesn't seem to have advanced Optimus. Considering I'm using this laptop mostly to do computer science projects, it's totally fine. But still, if this is the tradeoff for having AMD CPU then I might have to think it over next time.
UPDATE: Now it seems to be fine. It's not always draining the battery. OP: I have horrible problems with battery drain when completely turned off(please don't come with fast boot😂). I found a solution for an older moder to turn native acpi on in hidden bios but the 2023 model doesn't have such an option. It sucks so much to loose 20-30% overnight and founding out the battery is at 0% after a weekend.
What's the discharging rate at idle on the Intel variant when looking at HWInfo? I'm trying to figure out if I care more about the RTX 4070 over the 4060 (since the 4070 variant doesn't seem to exist for the AMD model), or more about the battery life for light tasks. Do you know if the AMD model will add a 4070 option in the future? Or other AMD CPU powered laptops releasing that are similar to this machine? Thanks for the great review!
Edit: Can't recommend this notebook because of battery drain issues while turned off. I can only suggest to disable Lenovo Vantage and use Lenovo Legion Toolkit. After disabling internal management of Vantage in Toolkit you can control the fans completely. With that you can set up high performance profiles which are still silent. One downside of the Ryzen 7 (not 9) is that you can't edit an curve. With an Intel you always have this option Otherwise the AMD would be perfect.
It would nice if they offered that processor in a more mainstream laptop...but you don't see it, I think they have just so many of those chips to go around. I remember Asus releasing a 6800 version Zenbook over a year ago but you couldn't find it.
The psref doesn’t show 4070. But tbh it’s not worth the extra money. A 4060 is basically 5-6% slower than a 4070, and you are adding like 10-20% to the laptop cost
@@beau-urns Its sad that prsef isnt showing 4070 tbh. I checked the datasheet & it showed that these amd modells should be available with ''upto 4070 '' Also 4070 is btw at an average 20% + faster than a 4060 at 1440p. So a 4070 is worth the price imo
Awsome Review. How would the Slim 7 perform, if it‘s connected to an external monitor with mouse and keyboard? I wanna use it as a Desktop replacement. Would it effect the battery life?
Unfortunately Lenovo haven’t launched the AMD Legion Slim 7 in my country yet.... so as of now I'm gonna be looking at the Slim 5 AMD, as I want the battery life lol
Just use DLSS. I don’t recommend lowering your resolution, that’s what upscaling is for. And it looks quite fantastic when you do so. Remember the higher or native resolution, the more DLSS you can use and it’s still looks fantastic. Upscaling typically looks bad on low resolution screens
I can try this sure. I’m doing some game testing but I’ll cycle back and do some more tests. I’ll be keeping this laptop long term so I’m happy to keep testing things
One thing I find really interesting is that I’m in Australia and thanks to your views I finally decided to by the Slim 7i 4060, i7 version and the only version of screen I could get was the 3.2k version you mentioned isn’t available yet, Is the Intel version still solid for both uni and any games I need? It’s ordered just waiting to ship
@@simi9222 Ah damn okay well there’s no version or the amd in australia yet or announced when will be where I am so I already ordered 7i one should still work well tho
How the heck did you get such low battery usage, Im in edge and nothing else, on battery saver, power conservation mode, still getting an estimated total of like 4-6 Hours. My discharge rate with just youtube open is 13-21w . I have disabled vantage and im using toolkit, have one tab open in dark mode. Crazy how much different your numbers are.
I’m actually able to replicate it on the new 14 inch slim five. That I just started testing. So there’s definitely something going on with your system. You likely have a lot of bloat or other software running. You need to ensure your startup apps are limited as well, otherwise all kinds of junk will start running when you start into windows
@@TechGuyBeau so I have a second nvme in the drive. Found eith some optimizing I can get idle usage of 8-9w and when I'm doing light productivity work it goes up to 11-16w. The dgpu was triggering as I hadn't switched to igpu mode. Flipping on battery saver in windows helps further and I then gimped the CPU to 80 percent max on battery. This all said I got about 8 hours light productivity use in battery today which was seriously impressive to me. Still, wondering if there are further optimizations you can recco?
@@Franciehatescoffeeicecreamthose numbers seem pretty good tbh. You can remove GeForce experience and manually install drivers. It running in the background drains some power

Thanks. I hope it was useful for you
This review is epic!
Wish this launches in India soon.
so any idea when it will launch in india?
@@sameerparihar4350 Not a clue thus far. If it does, as a value proposition, this needs to be priced in the vicinity of 1.3L INR, esp with a surfeit of capable previous gen Legions now selling below 1.1L. There's competition from laptops with 2K and 3.2K OLED screens with 100% DCI P3 color gamut in the sub 1L price bracket esp from Asus.

You tested dual-sided nvme in each m.2 so clearly, well done! Great details. The one thing I don't see others do is to confirm if USB4 ports support eGPU so you can use a video card with 16-24GB at home/office in eGPU enclosure.

Usb4 vs tb4 doesn’t matter. They are both 40gbit
@@TechGuyBeau True but USB4 is up to 40gbits but can be less, especially in cords longer than 1m. Wasn't sure if that's a concern to consider.

Thank you for this review. Its been on my cart for weeks and this video is what led me to buy it.
It’s a wonderful device
I'm getting around 15.5-16k in cinebench R23. Is this just natural variability you think?
I just purchased this laptop today! I'm super excited. It looks fantastic. I had a Lenovo Legion before. I'm a big fan of the Legion laptops.
Amazing laptop, thanks for being one of the first to review it. I think this is it and ill pull the trigger once it goes on sale like its Intel counterpart. A brilliant piece of machinery that serves portability, design and function in one package
This guy totally conviced me to buy this for black friday thanks man!

Does 3.2K screen with 165hz refresh rate consume more battery than the 1660p one with 240hz refresh rate?
Unsure but if you are on batter I’d say drop to 60hz (you can have windows do it for you), at which case 1600p would use less
Typically yes because the graphics card engages more in high res screens. But the 500 nit screen is a touch brighter

It’s very quiet on silent. And yes 65 watt charging over usb c works. I have a 65 watt Samsung charger I tested without issue
@@TechGuyBeau Thanks so much once again

I assumed that you would need at least a 100w charger to do that! This is a gamechager! No need to lug around the massive power brick!
@@Genezilla you can also get 100 PD small usb chargers. That is probably the best if you also want to be able to game on silent over usb c :)

Thank you for another great review!
The battery draw is shown in hwinfo, and you can keep watching it
I did testing against me l7i slim. And then with other owners.
There is always variability, but long story short, this amd model has great battery life
As for the performance side I have a gaming video soon that I’m recording at the moment.
Cheers
got the same laptop. wouldnt have bought it id known, type c to hdmi adapter would look awful
Brilliant review, thank you!
The pro still has a nice screen
@@TechGuyBeau Sure. And I would have got the 240Hz without an hesitation if the full DCI-P3 was not available. I shoot SLOG and such so a larger color space is much appreciated. Just one question : in your opinion, is such a laptop sufficient to edit 4K 10bits ? (I can still cancel my order if it not the case)

The 7840hs is an incredibly capable cpu. And encoding with the help of the 4060 is amazing
Remember, you can install nvidia studio drivers instead of game ready drivers (these still work for games anyways) and get much better rendering performance
I opted for the cheaper screen because it's brighter and has great rgb performance and decent enough performance across the other profiles for video editing and photography

The only thing about the Lenovo Slim 7 that I don't like is the lack of Windows Hello IR camera option. The fingerprint scanner is not in a convenient location!
Yeah I agree
It's not to late to adjust the order, if anyone would like to offer their perspectives as advice I would be thankful.
higher refresh and less resolution is good for gaming. higher resolution and less refresh is good for pic and vid edit.
Just got this laptop and my only gripe, which is not insignificant, is how warm it runs even when idling. The battery is at 37-38c when idling which the Vantage software indicates is high. In contrast my 2022 Legion 5 Pro with the 6800h and 3070ti has battery temp of 28c when in idle. Other than this, the laptop is great. But I really do not want a laptop that runs warm when idling!

If you sell 10,000 slim laptops, your definitely going to get a few bad units here and there
@@TechGuyBeau Agreed, what about your unit? Have you noticed this strange fan issue?
@@Cryptolorian no. But one solution is to disable cpu boosting in windows. This is a relatively useless feature in my opinion and cusses excessive noise
@@TechGuyBeau Thanks, but I already did that, used the registry to expose the option in the power plan and disabled it as it lowers temps when gaming by 10-20 degrees!
I just did some more troubleshooting and guess what? It’s the charger! Vantage reports the battery temp is high (36 degrees) and this issue only happens with the original charger is connected
, even though the battery is in conservation mode and not being charged! I guess it generates too much heat whilst connected to the charger and keeps setting the fan off every 20-30 seconds!
It doesn’t do this when running on battery!
Next step is to connect a 65W charger and see if that also causes the battery to heat up!
Will update 👍🏼
There's a new BIOS update that fixes this. You have to download it manually
Was that a dock or just a regular usb-c charger? The community is noticing that you cant charge the laptop with a usbc docking stating that provides 100W. But it charges using a 65w only charger.
Just a usb c charger (Lenovo brand 135 watt usb c)
In case you are planning soon a comparison between Slim 7i and this Slim7 I would like a bit more details about HWInfo battery consumption numbers between these models at idle/identical load ... I have a Slim 7i and never saw below 10W (average of 15W playing this video in silent mode) but my screen is 3200x2000 compared to yours ... Thanks
The amd model runs about 50% lower consumption when watching 1080p TH-cam. I tested with some other people head to head. Amd wins easily
@@TechGuyBeauwhy would someone get the Intel instead in your opinion?
@@tom22333 well the intel has higher synthetic benchmarks in productivity tasks. So i guess if you are doing encoding as a primary use
Would be cool if they made the keyboard ortho and removed the number pad + split it in the middle. It hasn't been implemented in any laptop yet.
It was my understanding that the extra memory slot supported a maximum of 16GB of ram. Are you sure that a 32GB module would be supported?
that's only what Lenovo has tested and offers as a buying option, but the ram is only limited by the processor specs and operating system (says also lenovo in the spec sheet). The Amd Processor can handle much more ram, but to this day I've only seen single ram sticks up to 48gb max, so right now you could take it to 64gb (16gb +48gb)
@@solovoypasando thanks for that. I was struggling to find the specification sheet
Thanks!
11% today at least in Canada >:)
@@TechGuyBeauI just bought last night with 11% Rakuten discount! Just paid $1350USD excluding Rakuten savings...winning! You think this game would play Starfield good? They just implemented DLSS/FG... although it's in Beta
What is the speed of the on-board DDR5 RAM? The upgrade RAM stick will be limited to that speed
5600mhz
5600mhz clocked down to 5200 is on board. You can use either a 5200mhz or a 5600mhz in your SODIMM slot. I ordered the slim 7i and crucial 16gb 5600mhz ram. If it arrives I'm gonna update if its fully compatible. Should be, as many people on reddit say.
@@GeM_p_nplease do , I just ordered the same modules and I'd appreciate it if you confirm they work ; and at what speed .
Why everyone installing their own ram instead of getting 32 gb rams from lenovo? 16 Sodim and 16 soldered??
How we can reduce temps of CPU? With vantage? Ryzen software? Windows options? I will love this laptop to last for a lot of years...
Two options:
Disable or lower cpu boosting in windows
Run in balanced modes
I have this laptop and extreme battery drain when turned off since new. Laptop loses 2% battery every hour when switched off. I disabled Win11 fast boot, disabled usb charging, using real shutdown not hybernate or sleep. Laptop loses around 40% battery in 24 hours when switched off. Have anyone else experienced this? AMD Ryzen 7 7840, RTX 4060, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD.
Do you know when is going to start selling the Legion slim 5 14"? Are you going to review in this channel? Thanks.
unless the price is insane im 100% going to. (i have to buy them out of pocket)
@@TechGuyBeauWhat do you do with these after you have finished reviewing? I’d sleep with them all but only if they’re metallic, I don’t like cheap plastic.
@@Cryptolorian most I sell. This one is my main laptop now tho. It’s a magnificent beast
@@TechGuyBeau It’s obvious you’re a good guy from a good family.
@@Cryptolorian or a bad guy from a good family
I've got my legion slim 7 last week. Generally I'm quite satisfied with the purchase after a week of usage. The only gripe is that it doesn't seem to have advanced Optimus. Considering I'm using this laptop mostly to do computer science projects, it's totally fine. But still, if this is the tradeoff for having AMD CPU then I might have to think it over next time.
Lots of amd machines can have it. It’s just a limit of the model itself
From how it sounds it's something of AMD processors having issues with the HDR screens.
Is it sleeping or turned off?
@@TechGuyBeau turned off and fast boot is disabled in windows.
@@TechGuyBeau Now it got better without me changing anything. One day there was clearly no drain or 1% over night which is totally fine.
@@Slyizable so what did you do
Bought mine feb 2022.
Didn’t even make it till feb 2024😭 overheated n turned off Won’t turn back
That’s a different model. That’s the AMD advantage, the 6800s runs hot: this uses a 4060, which runs cool
@@TechGuyBeau nah same one
Anyone know when better GPU options are gonna come out?
What’s a better gpu option?
@@beau-urnsBy better gpu he probably means 4070, 4080, I’m guessing 🤷🏻♂️
Nothing in psref for the 4070. So who knows (if ever). But the 4070 is only slightly above a 4060
@@TechGuyBeauonly sligthly? I thought 4070 gives 20% more fps than 4060 for almost the same power demand.
Why is the 3.2k screen display not the best option for gamers ?
It’s very high resolution, which means the gpu will struggle to keep up
Thanks 👍
What's the discharging rate at idle on the Intel variant when looking at HWInfo?
I'm trying to figure out if I care more about the RTX 4070 over the 4060 (since the 4070 variant doesn't seem to exist for the AMD model), or more about the battery life for light tasks.
Do you know if the AMD model will add a 4070 option in the future? Or other AMD CPU powered laptops releasing that are similar to this machine?
Thanks for the great review!
Discharge on idle on intel is about 5-10% above amd. Amd is more impressive when doing workloads, such as watching HD video
@@TechGuyBeau Thank you! So for very light loads like watching a YT video or some text editing, the discharge power is much more on the Intel one?
Edit: Can't recommend this notebook because of battery drain issues while turned off.
I can only suggest to disable Lenovo Vantage and use Lenovo Legion Toolkit.
After disabling internal management of Vantage in Toolkit you can control the fans completely.
With that you can set up high performance profiles which are still silent.
One downside of the Ryzen 7 (not 9) is that you can't edit an curve.
With an Intel you always have this option
Otherwise the AMD would be perfect.
It would nice if they offered that processor in a more mainstream laptop...but you don't see it, I think they have just so many of those chips to go around. I remember Asus releasing a 6800 version Zenbook over a year ago but you couldn't find it.
Amd was very late. Annoying for sure. We will start to see more soon hopefully. The 7840hs is a no brainer in ultrabooks
Does anyone knows if a 4070 version is in plans or lenovo will probably axe the 4070 amd release ?
The psref doesn’t show 4070. But tbh it’s not worth the extra money. A 4060 is basically 5-6% slower than a 4070, and you are adding like 10-20% to the laptop cost
@@beau-urns Its sad that prsef isnt showing 4070 tbh. I checked the datasheet & it showed that these amd modells should be available with ''upto 4070 ''
Also 4070 is btw at an average 20% + faster than a 4060 at 1440p. So a 4070 is worth the price imo
@@beau-urns more like +10%
Awsome Review. How would the Slim 7 perform, if it‘s connected to an external monitor with mouse and keyboard? I wanna use it as a Desktop replacement. Would it effect the battery life?
In theory the battery life is improved a little bit. Since the monitor has its own power.
As for performance should be just fine
Bro, Any chance you can review the battery life and others for the Lenovo thinkpad p16s gen2 AMD Oled 64gb Canada site?
The question is THIS for 1600$ or Legion 7i 2024with 4070... for 2400$
This. For 1600. No contest
Unfortunately Lenovo haven’t launched the AMD Legion Slim 7 in my country yet.... so as of now I'm gonna be looking at the Slim 5 AMD, as I want the battery life lol
Can anyone share their experience gaming with the 3200x2000 panel? How does it look when using lower resolutions for games?
Just use DLSS. I don’t recommend lowering your resolution, that’s what upscaling is for. And it looks quite fantastic when you do so. Remember the higher or native resolution, the more DLSS you can use and it’s still looks fantastic. Upscaling typically looks bad on low resolution screens
Thanx, the only choice to be made is slim 7 intel or amd..
Hey, I woukd love to see how the battery compares on igpu and dgpu mode for both idle and rendering/gaming
Battery won't be as good as the AMD version,4060 isn't that great but it's okay for casual 60 fps gaming on med high settings
