As a Tradie I have owned 2 Great Walls, done hundred of thousands of ks in them, never laid a spanner on either except for servicing. For me the Ranger IS NOT a 20k better car. GWM all the way for me......especially from my experience they are bullet proof

Have you got one of these new models? I want to know if the small engine at 120kw, (unsure of torque) has enough power to satisfy me. Coming from someone that has a 3.2 ranger. Kinda skeptical, but it is good that there is now affordable competition.

I don't have the new model, but I would have no hesitation in buying another Great Wall, Steed, whatever they are calling them now. This new model looks as though it has all the power you will need, what with the nanny states we all live in now speeding fines will send us broke. I can tell you the older model I had (2018) could cruise at 120ks with ease so the new GWM will do it easier. The secret to all modern diesel engines is change your oil and filter every 5k, they want you to go to service intervals of 15k because they know the motor will wear out twice as fast so they can sell you parts......Good Luck on your new purchase and saving 25k

As a tradie I used mine every day, did about 60k each year, never an issue. After 3 years I traded in for another one, did another 195k in 3 years and retired...... My only expenses was oil and filter every 5k, fuel and air filter every 25k and change oil on both diffs and gearbox every 50k

Cant see the logic of testing the 3.2L Ranger against the 2.0 L of the GWM
The 2.2L Ranger has less power and torque than the GWM why not the 2.0L single turbo Ranger would have been closer.
A bit weird the engine choice

  • @youreaknob
    @youreaknob 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

Talk about biased. Ford hasn’t made a car in Australia for a long time. Stop saying the Ranger is an Aussie car. It’s made in a foreign country and sold all over the world. Do some research on GWM and you will see the big names that back the company. The only people who put down the Cannon are those that spent similar money on a used Hilux and ranger with no warranty and 200k kms on the clock. The GWM is a game changer and will cause the used 4x4 market to tank.

    • @carsales

Hey FORK IT, just to clarify, Bruce said "The Ranger's been developed for Australian conditions and it shows" that doesn't insinuate that it has been built here in any way. It simply means the Ranger has been tested and refined on Australian roads prior to production. Thanks

For the price, I will choose GWM, it’s time for other ute makers dropping their price, as I think it’s over price for most of the ute selling in the market, reason for it people still keep buying it, let’s see what happens if people choose the cheaper price ute.

Reason for the price difference is obvious. Check out the difference in build quality, materials, after market accessories etc etc. the only reason you buy a China vehicle is because you can’t afford a reliable brand name vehicle. Nissan, Ford, isuzu, etc. that’s my opinion and the opinion of thousands of other people. We can’t all be wrong. Also i don’t think the price difference will affect anything. People want quality also ford & Toyota are still number 1 sellers in AUSTRALIA and has been like this for years. 👍👍👍

Can someone please explain how that average fuel consumption of the GWM came to 13.4l/100km??? I own the South African P-Series LT 4x4 model (this is the top spec model in South Africa) and my average for all sorts of driving conditions is MUCH lower. Also - please do a comparison with the Ford 2.0 SINGLE turbo version rather than the 3.2 option for a more accurate comparison. The GWM will crush it (guess why the used the 3.2 in order to avoid Ford to look bad here). Lastly, the GWM's ZF auto box is the best in the world, as found in many other prestigious brands. For is notorious for their auto box failures and issues. While I appreciate the effort for the comparison, I do agree with some others here that it was shallow, and biased. Even if - for some reason - Ford is "marginally" better (which I strongly disagree with) - the word "marginally" certainly does not justify the huge price difference.

Very interesting review although I don't think your views were completely neutral. The 4WD assessment I believe could have been explored more than being glanced over. You didn't really go into the quality running gear or ZF 8 speed auto, reliability of such. Auto hunting for gears used to an issue on the Ford. Didn't really go into fit and finish, paint, or warranty. How you mentioned Ford is a more refined car - no its not it might have slightly better ride and power. Didn't mention Eaton rear dif lock. How could you say reliability and serive is unknown. It's been tried and tested components. Previous revision of the engine was in the Steed and other vehicles. Agree resale is unknown but you don't need to pay an extra 20K to start with. No I don't own a Cannon or Ranger. Yes I'm in the market to buy something. Maybe a rating scale on interior, paint, etc could help.

But the Cannon-X did everything the others did, looked Okay doing it, and being that they've made over 200,000 of these cars so far (Australia is LATE to the party on this car) I couldn't see there being any issue with reliability. Being that I'll keep the car for at LEAST 10 years, depreciation isn't an issue.

“Aussie” Ford Ranger, let’s put that into perspective, it’s built in Thailand like most other dual cab utes except for the Hilux which is still built in Japan.
The Ranger is sold basically the same as here all over the Asia Pacific region, South Africa and lots of other places.
The only thing Ford Australia did was fine tune the suspension for our conditions.
GWM has finalised the purchase of GM’s Thailand plant and will be building the Ute there as well as their Chinese plant with Asia Pacific ones coming out of Thailand eventually.

You could put a little bit of that initial twenty grand saving towards a 2 inch lift and some better quality suspension components and the Great Wall would probably ride as well as if not better than the Ranger; I haven't driven either but based on what I've seen in other reviews it is only the Great Wall's lack of ground clearance that holds it back (a little) off road.
And if your thinking about one as a family vehicle, apparently the Great Wall has the most leg and head room in the back seat of any of the dual cabs (short of a RAM or the F150 of course) for sale in Australia at the moment. Rear a/c vents too.

Wasn’t it Paul Keating from the ALP who said we are Asia? Hence we have no car industry and we pay top dollar across the board for what should be a relative cheap car regardless of brand. Let’s look at other products such as New Zealand brand Fischer and paykel, they stopped manufacturing in Australia and sent their production to China , but walk into any white good store and your still paying top dollar despite production costs being heavily reduced. Then there’s the US range of utes, completely out of reach in price and almost triple in cost compared to the US market, why? Is it our government in general applying taxes to keep 4x4 vehicles off the road and limited in numbers to certain buyers? Why won’t US vehicles land already converted, especially as it drives up the cost to the end user?

Don't know about that. They've made about 200,000 of these utes so far, in 8 different market segments, in the year that the vehicle has been on sale. The engine is a known quantity, being around since 2010 in the previous guise, the electronics are all made by Bosch, pneumatic systems all Continential, trans ZF... I think it's showing that Ford, Nissan, Isuzu, and Mitsubishi are over-charging for the equipment.

Red China keeps Australian living standards high by buying coal and iron ore. If it wasn't for them we would be all living like Victoria = broke.

What a joke report I’m guessing this report was GWM funded. Before you buy one remember GWM cars like their stable mates Haval, LDV, Chery, MG and the like are divisions of SAIC which is a state company and are imported into Australia in small numbers. None of these brands have a big dealer network, customer service or parts backup. You may also want to think about why GWM was rebranded from Great Wall for a start.

How is it GWM funded? Regardless of after sales support the vehicle itself if fantastic for the price.
Also the brands you listed are not part of SAIC appart from MG and LDV. GWM is a seperate thing.

I'd buy second hand before I'd buy GWM. I've heard too many things go wrong with them. Look past the cheap chrome and useless electronics and I know which one I'd go for if I was a tradie after a ute.

200,000 sales world wide, belong to gwm forum, and 99% love them and they are reliable, many coming over from other brands and very happy they did

Wrong wrong and wrong. You hold a stigma because white Australia was racist against the Chinese brands.
I worked for Ford in their marketing team for 10 years in a senior role. We were so worried people would realize the advantage GWM would have when they come out. And now we faced a 20% dip in sales since this GWM ute has come out. People know the GWM car is going to be superior. That's also why our marketing team has halved in size and our bidding options are slimming.
There is also works in process for our price drops in 8 years time.

@@kimolock I watched an interesting video the other day. It spoke of how China was once a great proud nation that built great buildings and structures to last hundreds of years due to their morality and beliefs. That all changed around 100 years ago when the CCP took over and made the people worship a corrupt and unfair government instead. Their morals changed and now they have new buildings crumbling within 3 years. Basically, they wouldn't design their cars to last 20 or 30 years. They are flat out designing them to out last the warranty. Add to it rumours of forced labour I think they would care more about money in their pockets than having any pride in their vehicles. I wouldn't be surprised if forums are filled with fake accounts. I cannot trust anything that comes out of China that has not been influenced by an outside non Chinese based company. China is more interested in how it can control and dominate the world than it is in its own peoples welfare and it will cut corners and undercut where ever it can to do so through shiny chrome and lights on the surface to hide the sickening smog of workmanship and pride that is lacking beneath.

Pay close attention to the rear wheels of the GWM......notice the inward lean with that 650kg payload? Yeah. The wheels will fall off on a long load carry l suspect.
