I bought my bike 2yrs ago,I love it,it was a non running bike,my filters looked like yours,but I just cleaned them and put new oil in,cleaned carbs,then I switched the seat and some other cheap shit,cosmetic shit,and it's been a daily driver ever since,I am a poor mofo so I saw those shaving and got scared af,thought I was screwed,but when I put my carbs back on(bs34)it started first kick, I adjusted cam,then valves,synched carbs, clutch pushrod oil seal,sprockets, chain.then I rode it to work a few times changed oil again, then rode it a few hundred miles changed it again,I haven't had a single issue with it since.i did buy top end seals,and cam chain guide but they're just sitting until I see a good reason to pull motor

Awesome thats all good news, i had aloooot of plastic and some metals chunks which tells me my guides are gone, so ill be pulling my motor out anyway to finish welding the frame so when i do plan on atleast taking a look 😬 lol but thats great man thanks for the sub, much appreciated! 🤙

Hate to bring this up buuut - the side filter full of aluminium and plastic is a sure sign that your front cam chain guide has failed. There are also easy mods available to stop your sump filter from tearing open again - it will happen.
Worth looking these up on the www.xs650.com/ forum.
Oh yeah i figured that out pretty quick lol i plan on taking apart the top end and getting that taken care of. I never new about the sump mods though that sounds great thanks!

Is this whole process necessary for every oil change?
Not at all! If its a new bike to you or if youv never dug into it, ide recommend it though!
What is the "Other Plug" at 7:11 ?? Found a bard find XS650, doing a full walk through to make sure everything that needs to be replaced is, don't know what that plug is so I don't want to just unscrew it. LOL
For some reason its just another drain plug 🤷♂️ i only ever did the front one so ibdont have to plugs to worry about a potential leakage from lol
Just found your channel. I inherited a 1979 xs650 special 2. So this is what I get to look forward too lol. Did you ever figure out why your camera wouldn't stay focused?
Haha glad you found it! And it only gets funner from there 😂 cant say i remember a soecific moment in this video where it was an actuall problem, there is many different things to make a dslr nit focus just right whether its settings on the camera lighting and so one and so forth
Hey man when you showed those two drain plugs ,one is for the oil I've never removed the other one,do you know what it's for?
Both 27mm plugs are to drain the oil, i believe its because of the internal shape is not level and both plugs are at the lowest points so it will be a complete oil drain.
Am I supposed to change sump filter at every oil change?
Not at all! It is meant to be a reused filter, however it doesnt hurt to check on it every oil change because there is a specific point where there is alot of oil flow pressure and is known to blow the screen!
ChopperFisher and the oil filter is a reusable filter as well right? And another question, there is no difference between the engine oil and the transmission oil right? My maintenance manual does such a bad job at explaining stuff
Sure is, and that is correct, there is an oil pump that takes the oil from the base of the engine where the transmition is and pumps it to the top of the cylinder for kinda a double use, thats what the chrome tube on the front of the engine is
