Come join me on a new docu-series that explores identity, racial tensions in the South during the 20th century, and the unique experiences of those who historically called Louisiana home.
My name is Danielle Romero, and all my life, I have romanticized Louisiana.
Growing up in New York, it represented a place where I could step back the sepia-toned life of my great grandmother, Lola Perot, who died before I was born.
Now, it was time to go back to Louisiana--although I had no idea what the truth would be or what questions to ask---who was Lola really? Who were we?

@@nytn Are you really a historian, though? Do you have grad school experience? Have you published in any peer-reviewed journals? There is nothing wrong with making the claims you make as long as you have concrete historical evidence to back them up and you've done historiographical work that has been peer-reviewed. You can't just go around calling what you do historical work when you are just raising questions and possibilities. At best, your Babe Ruth video is conspiracy theory work. As a Native American, there are far too many Black and White people who claim our heritage and history; it is not ethical to make such claims without having concrete proof, that is, if you are, in fact, a professional historian.

I think Morgan Freeman’s point is not that you don’t study history and learn from it. His point is that you get beyond that and start treating each other as Americans versus a color or ancestry. Then that common bond of citizenship and culture will override any physical differences we have. But if we go around screaming, “I am different, I think different, I look different, I have different experiences, I’m not like you”, and someone says, “okay, you are different and not like me”. You can’t then claim they are racists. Also, if you embody every negative stereotype people may have of people with your background, you can’t complain if they judge you based on the stereotype. I say this as a multiracial person that has European, Indigenous, and African ancestry but who considers himself just an American.

People need something and someone upon which to blame their failures and inadequacies, moreover they need a floor of which they will never slip below. A hated minority group serves all of these purposes. Racism and discrimination is not simply a misunderstanding it serves. Racism and discrimination is not simply a misunderstanding, it has a functional purpose for the cohesion of the society. Senator John C Calhoun discusses this in detail, in his book disquisition on government, in regards to black people in America.

They subsidized farmers/potential farmers and settlers in the West--not like it was exactly the easiest or most simple task. Certainly, nowhere near the easy life that immigrants of today coming to Europe and North America who, at times, live on the dole, after everyone else did the most difficult work.
A bunch of white immigrants were doing back-breaking work in coal mines, like quite a few of my ancestors.
"The Europeans that came to America in the 1800s" is such a broad brush. In no way were they all given land or taught important skills---and they had to get shit done--building infrastructure and toiling the land. Pretty absurd the way you framed your statement. Still, they certainly had it easier and had far greater opportunity than any black American, that I would never deny.
But the claim of many who aren't clear and precise in their language sort of imply that they were just "given free shit", and all descendants of white immigrants have squandered freebies and gibs isn't true.

I know you don’t get political, so I will. My friends and I have noticed that some people who never said racist stuff, started to in 2016. Even a friend who is in an interracial marriage, her dad was totally normal toward her husband and kids, until 2016. Now this man doesn’t want to see his grandkids. Politics has great power to shape how people feel about culture and race.

As someone who descends from enslaved Africans, indentured servants from Asia, slave owners, and consensual inter-racial relationships in the Caribbean, I know that issues concerning ancestry is not always "Black and White". I read about the rigid caste systems of slave societies and terms like quadroon however the term Melungeon is new to me. Also, watching videos like this has given me a great sense of relief as i know now that racial labels and the enforcement of these labels is just another tool of oppression. Race has been weaponized to divide and conquer it's all BS really. I still like learning though, why be offended by knowledge?

Well, I think there is overlap in regards to class issues in this country, for sure, but it is a big mistake to think that's all it is ( I realize you didn't say that ). Study after study had shown that " black " poverty is very different in this country than others. The roots & disproportionate nature of it , as well as how embedded it is, is much different. I think it is still our uncomfortableness with talking about race ....BECAUSE it is so " messy " , is why sometimes we want to reflexably go to class , & while a lot would be solved by tackling many of our class issues ( because there is much overlap) , the trauma , loss ( financially, psychologically etc ) & duration of it , makes it something we can't in any way ignore. We've never had any " Truth & Reconciliation" as they've had in other countries with atrocities. Germany is a perfect example, you can't walk more than 3 blocks in Germany without something to remind us of what occured with the Holocaust . It's mandatory that students learn about it & WHY it was wrong. Contrarily, we do almost the complete opposite on this country.

Or taking a lunch break under a statue of Josef Mengele of see fucking swastika on bumber sticker's and flag poles everywhere? These hypothetical are Black peoples lived reality for multiple generations. There's a persistent and cultivated empathy gap and willful obfuscation when it comes to the history of Black people in this country and class reductionism has always been a cruel aspect of said obfuscation.

It’s too bad that you get slammed for your page. You have been very conscientious to be aware of how the material may be received and sensitively present the information as it is found by you….period.
Unfortunately, some people will make assumptions, draw conclusions and make accusations based on their own opinion.
In my experience, it has been very challenging to bring up anything about Black/African Americans. People get huffy, cut you off and make accusations about causing division….when the point is just about differences in the way things are done (celebrations, cooking styles, expressions), between people groups. Nobody says a word about people sharing how things were done ‘in the old country’ and how they have been maintained to this day, when non-Blacks say something. It’s not even noticed that they are making a comparison to other people groups. They seem to think that any mention about Blacks/African Americans is initiated in order to create conflict.
It’s interesting that some people consider silence a sign that racial issues have evolved. No. I can appreciate that we have differences (not everyone within a group of course), without feeling negatively about it.
That’s what is so good about your page. It’s informational, but not judgmental.

Malcolm X, warned black folks on black People like Morgan Freeman, In his 20th Century Uncle Tom speech. And man, Morgan Freeman, and a whole Lott of black conservatives, fit that title.

@@TheMidniteSon No I'm not. Sounds to me like Morgan is trying to appease a certain segment of the population. That population is very loyal to Fox News. Every time Morgan speaks on this subject Fox News can't wait to parrot it over their various platforms. It's the same thing they do when Sen. Tim Scott says anything negative about black people.

@oddindian1 ... kkk still exists, systematic racism still exists, Dylan Roof happened , according to a 2020 CDC study white doctors are at best neglecting black NEWBORNS to the extent that black NEWBORNS have 3x mortality rate when they are treated by white doctors vs black doctors. But black people should not give their genocide and terrorism energy. Its always the people that aren't experiencing the trauma that dismiss it.

@@oddindian1 Its not a " mindset " it's our freaking history. & it's not just about history, as we have all kind of present inequities tied to this recent history. As I mentioned, in Germany you can't go 3 blocks without seeing some kind of remembrance or a plaque honoring Jewish people who perished during the Holocaust. We don't find this a problem because it's not implicating the U S .....this history is OUR atrocity ,
Ironically, in the early stages of the Nazi Party ,they looked to the states to see how an apartheid system could work well.
& the third point, we're not all better yet. There are still big ramifications from this history . Too many acres of stolen land, & communities that were burned down & drowned out, for it too be completely over. I would say we're in the 4th quarter tho.
Finally, you can't tell a group of people who have lived through the horrors of Jim Crow & slavery , & expect them to stop the conversation about this history when it's never, in a national sense , really been thoroughly talked about. So , I think you & especially Morgan ( who I would have thought should know better ). Are extremely incorrect.
Not talking about it , is about the worst thing we could do . The history has been a cruel one for blacks here ( & indigenous folk too ) , you telling another group to basically " get over it " is the height of ignorance & arrogance. Can't do that ........until we ARE truly " over it " . & thats going to take some more time.

@@adventuresinmoodcitypod2000 I am Jewish and Native American at some point you have to make a choice to be bound in the pain of the past or move on. You can say whatever you wish and say I am arrogant but that truth still stands. No matter how much value you give to your feelings. There is only really one way to get over something. Make a change in you. Humanity has the capacity horror that is our nature. You can let it consume you or not. Reality is hostile, so it is and has always been. You can't let pain be an excuse to not live your life.
