      Right color doesn't matter when it comes to being interested in history. Let me tell you this. When Skip Gates started doing "Finding Your Roots" on PBS it was not called that. The show was first called African American Lives and as the title suggested it was about African-American genealogical history. With me being an African-American I was totally invested. A couple of years later, people other than African-Americans wanted to have their family genealogy done on the show. Skip said that he had never really given it a thought, but he and PBS were interested. I thought that I would not be very interested in the shows involving white people. I was not going to watch. But I happen to catch an episode and you know what? It was just as interesting as the African-American ones. There were a lot surprises and unknowns in those peoples family histories too. The beauty of that show is no two family histories are alike and all of them are interesting.

      Yeah, its weird, its like wen People point out there were "melaneted" native americans even before colonization. People get so defensive about this, i am like; "what does it even matter anyway?". No indigenous nation was white, but they did have a variety of skin tones, most native groups of central and north america, have "my kinda of skin tone", light skin, but gets very dark in the sun. While most native tribes in Brazil have a darker complexion, in fact, thats why the cast sistem of the portuguese and the spanish are so different.

      Many Americans are uncomfortable with American history because of the panic over things like "critical race theory," without understanding what that even is. They've been told that "critical" = pointless criticism, not critical thinking. They've been told that somehow looking back in any way but glorifying the past is baaaaaaad.

    • @beaujac311
      @beaujac311 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      bretnwalker8596:. You even have African-Americans who fit that description. Many of them don't want to hear the history of African-Americans pre 1964 Civil Rights Amendments. They are ashamed and uncomfortable. When you confront them about it, they will tell you that they are not ashamed, while the same time saying that don't want to hear it. I used be somewhat that way. I didn't change until I really started to dig in to African-American history (US history). Once I did I realized that I had dehumanized African-Americans who had been enslaved. I did not see their humanity. Once I came to that realization and started learning more of our history the freer I became. I no longer felt bad when I saw a program on US slavery or Jim Crow. I started to see strong people instead of victims. Movies like Twelve Years A Slave no longer made me feel bad. They actually make me think more critically about that time period. I think more of that history should be made into movies. The first thing out of the mouths of some black people who are ashamed is "I don't want to see that slavery sh*t". Those are the people who need to learn more of that history not less.

    That's why I like your talks on ancestry. You cover a lot of ethnicities of which you are many of them. It's refreshing to see someone not pick one race but wholly embrace ALL of your ancestors. That honesty is sorely missed in our society.

    • @k-dwanks2481
      @k-dwanks2481 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ethnicity and heritage are related concepts but they refer to different aspects of identity:
      Ethnicity: Ethnicity typically refers to a social group that shares a common cultural, linguistic, or ancestral heritage. It often includes factors like language, religion, traditions, and customs that are passed down through generations. Ethnicity can be tied to a specific geographical region or historical background. For example, someone might identify as Hispanic, Chinese, or Somali based on their ethnic background.
      Heritage: Heritage, on the other hand, refers to the inheritance or legacy that is passed down from preceding generations. It encompasses not only cultural elements like traditions and beliefs but also tangible aspects such as buildings, artifacts, and natural features. Heritage can be both tangible (such as historical sites, artifacts, or family heirlooms) and intangible (such as oral traditions, languages, knowledge systems, and rituals).
      In essence, ethnicity tends to focus more on cultural and ancestral ties that define a group's identity, while heritage encompasses a broader spectrum of inherited elements, both tangible and intangible, that contribute to one's sense of belonging and identity.
      Saying she's part of many ethnicities is wrong
      Her ethnicity is tied to Italy / being Italian American
      Her heritage is tied all around where her ancestors came from
      Ok

Or why do they take your medical history (including family history) when you see the doctor for the first time? Why is that knowledge relevant to the present?

    If you aren't qualified I wonder then who would be? I've had teachers who were not African American teach on that history in college and they were excellent. I attended a lecture at the Writer's museum in Chicago and the writer was of Indian descent and she wrote a detailed book on the slave trade. I was a fan of an author who wrote stories that took place in England. They had wonderful details and you felt as if you were walking the streets, as you read the stories. Over time we became friends, so I was pretty excited to share with her that I would be on visiting a couple of places that she has written about. I asked her for advice on what to explore when I reached the cities; imagine my surprise, when I ended up being her tour guide. She had never been to the United Kingdom! You don't have to have been somewhere or be from that racial group to have a deep, understanding, appreciation and respect for getting the facts right. thank you for sharing these experiences because they give your followers insights to some of the challenges you face in hosting these topics.

      There's no reason to think that we all know our own ethnicities' history better than anyone else. You know what you STUDY. It’s interesting to me that a country like Germany has in their curriculum discussions about their fascist past and. propaganda and it’s effects on the population. Here in the U.S. in many places we don’t want to discuss ALL of our history. We want to cherry pick what we tell to future generations. If we don’t learn these historical lessons we may repeat them. I think we all should tell the stories regardless of our own ethnic backgrounds. It’s our collective history.

    When I took “Logic” in college over forty years ago, “Appeal to Authority” was defined as basing an argument on who a source was, or their credentials, and ignoring the actual content of what that source was concluding. Evidently, that is no longer what is taught.

    How's that saying go? Those that ignore history are doomed to repeat it? A person can try to pretend that such and such never happened, but it always backfires. That's why cancel culture can be dangerous. My husband and I were talking about Aunt Jemima the other day, and how all those ignorant people canceled a great black woman entrepreneur from the early 20th century by assuming she was being portrayed as a "mammy" servant and exploited, , and we said it's a slap in the face for modern black entrepreneurs. Don't cancel history just because you don't like something, or you assume something, and it hurts you in the feels.

    • @MaryLou913
      @MaryLou913 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You don’t see how a mascot, not an entrepreneur but a mascot for a White company is harmful when it further perpetuates the narrative of Black folks naturally being suited to be the help? You gotta know the handkerchief and smile was purposeful. Google it. She didn’t own that company, ever! She was a mascot. A smiling Negro serving Whites was the brand. How can a self respecting Black entrepreneur navigating through White supremacy look at a bottle of Ms. Buttersworth, the outline of a Black body, a Black slave or Black maid, whatever she was marketed as, as the brand that’s being sold and feel any sort of pride with that depiction? That’s honorable? Please look it up for yourself.

    • @MaryLou913
      @MaryLou913 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Furthermore, “cancel culture” is only dangerous to the institution of white supremacy, misogyny, domestic violence, homophobia, predatory capitalism and fascism. It’s their just desserts if a celebrity or company is engaging in abusive tactics or behavior. I can speak for Black people and say we should have been doing it all along! We have indiscriminately supported racists for too long! And where we haven’t had much of a say or political power we can decide where our Black dollar goes and let it speak for our intentions and the businesses and celebrities we support. There’s no way you’re Black saying cancel culture is dangerous and this is a very OFFENSIVE statement to suggest we shouldn’t be able to make decisions about where our money goes based off of poor behavior. You want us to pay to be further abused? Why wouldn’t we want to support those that support us? To indicate we shouldn’t is what’s dangerous! To suggest we shouldn’t make decisions in our own interest is dangerous. I’m not trying to be too harsh but I’m sorry that type of sentiment is really triggering when all of a sudden who we give our money to matters so much and the idea being we shouldn’t look at their policies where it affects us in particular. I’m sorry but that’s just INSANE to me! 😂 Literally insane!!!

    • @MaryLou913

      And you’re right we should never cancel history. We should TELL IT ALL. I’ve been committed to doing that since I was a teen and the first statement you made about being doomed to repeat it is so true. Danielle you are doing exactly the same thing you said you shouldn't do -- respond to the trolls. If you use their "logic" no one is allowed to perform CPR or the Heimlich manoeuvre to save a life except they are a doctor or a nurse. History is so vast. No one individual can cover all it's intricacies and fact points. Therefore, while it shouldn't need to be said, your contribution, regardless of your qualifications, once it's backed up by documentation and respectable sources, is just as valid. Additionally, for the people who are tired of the black/white historical divide, people like you wouldn't need to fill in the gaps of the missing parts of this history if the perpetrators of this racial division didn't work so hard to erase it from the record.

    How ironic -- History has been taught to people of all ethnicities from a Eurocentric perspective, overwhelmingly by "white"-appearing folk since long before the United States was a country. For some reason that was ok, but now only people identified as this or that "race" can teach the history of the people someone else thinks the teacher should be identified as. This is the history of all human beings, and it is important for all human beings to understand and consider from a wide array of perspectives. "All things affect all things."
