This Muslim Israeli Woman Is the Future of the Middle East | FP in Israel

  • Lucy Aharish is one of the most prominent television broadcasters in Israel-and the very first Arab Muslim news presenter on mainstream Hebrew-language Israeli television.
Born and raised in a small Jewish town in Israel’s Negev desert, as one of the only Arab Muslim families, she has a unique lens through which to view the divisions in Israeli society, the complexity of the country’s national identity, and the Middle East more generally.
Lucy has long been a vocal critic of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and is equally critical of her fellow Arab Israelis, particularly of Arab violence and the Arab leadership that she says condones it.
A Muslim and a Zionist; an Arab and an Israeli. In short, Lucy Aharaish is an iconoclast.
Bari Weiss sat down with Lucy in Tel Aviv. They talked about the October 7 massacre and its impact on the country and her family-her husband put on his uniform and headed to the south within hours of hearing the news, despite being past the age of an active reservist. She also talked about the challenges she faced growing up as the only Arab Muslim kid in a traditional Jewish village, the terrorist attack that she survived in Gaza as a child, and the hope that she has for her Muslim-Jewish son and the future of the country she calls home.

@@angelinejohnson9511 after 75 years of being under threat .. two intifada in which stabbing Jews blowing up buses and buildings, constant rocket attacks … the state of Israel up to October 7 was thriving. The unprecedented violence that Hamas committed in ground air and naval attacks was certainly underestimated. But the kibbutz and music festival that were targeted by Hamas were of more left leaning Jews … intelligence had thought West Bank would have been a target. Not these people who were on good terms with Gaza citizens. More of a betrayal of the people from gaza don’t you think?

I’m an American woman feeling so lost, heartbroken and enraged by what’s happening to Israel/Jews. I’m an atheist and politically homeless now too, since the left is objectively psychotic. No honey the left is not lost. What is happening is a backlash to the conservative right wing push against society and schools. The left is raging now because the pressure cooker is about to explode. The left aren’t the bad guys, it just takes a lot of right wing abuse to ignite them. Now they are igniting and the rage is naturally exploding. 😊

In the last year polls Netanyahu is consistently very far from achieving a coalition in the next elections. The ancestors of both groups have been in violent struggles with each other multiple times.
Palestinians must accept that their ancestors had stolen the land, just as the Israelis won it back after they were attacked in 1948.
Never forget the horrors inflicted on the Jews by the Palestinians in the Hebron massacre of 1928, and in the hundreds of years before Israel was founded.

She is extremely, extremely intelligent, and comes from a good stock (just appreciate what her father used to teach her!!!) It is probably ironic to say that, but in her profession and position, extreme intelligence is a blessing.. but not a requirement.. The way PR works nowadays, her, admittedly, gorgeous looks, and even the fact that that she is a Muslim Arab pro-Israeli woman in Israel could have scored her million points in getting her TV Anchor job. But luckily for all of us, she is EXTREMELY intelligent... which helps... but does not, normally, serves as the devisive point for someone getting a job nowadays... So, as sad as it is, extreme intelligence is not to be taken for granted in a public figure. Let alone sincerity.

She is a self-absorbed narcissist just mouthing Zionist propaganda, so it's small wonder she's a treasured token on Israeli TV. The only incident of terrorism she recounts is one of the Palestinian resistance, nothing from the more than a century of settler-colonialist violence against the indigenous being driven from their historic homeland, including 7 decades of occupation that denies basic civil and human rights, such as the right to shelter and nutrition, a suppression that significantly intensified two years ago after a gradual rise in violence over 20 years. As for people globally demonstrating for a ceasefire, I amm Scottish-American and have been protesting Jewish supremacist racism since 1982, with other demonstrators of all ethnicities, many but not all who have lived in and have family in Gaza and elsewhere in historic Palestine. Israel is not a democracy except for Azhkenazi Jews. It has no constitution because it wishes to conceal its violation of all international laws. Israel is a client state of US and European imperialist, expansionist powers. It would collapse in two weeks if our taxdollars here in the US were not enabling it to survive in return for using the Palestinians as guinea pigs in weapon experimentation. spying on neighboring states. and doing dirty work helping train repressive forces for puppet governments around the world. In 1897 zionist leader Herzl appealed for support in settling Palestine to European monarchs on the grounds that zionist Jews would "serve as an outpost of civilization among the barbarians," and Israel has been paid for its racist servitude ever since.

I'm very well educated on what's going on. This conflict is very complex.
See people keep picking sides as to who right and wrong. The reality is both sides are wrong. Let me correct that the system of goverments and policies are wrong.
Israel taking of Palestine land and homes. It's occupation is wrong. It use Jewish settlers and IDF to threaten and harass Palestine is wrong.
Hamas attacks against Israel is wrong its desire to kill the Jews and destroy Israel is wrong. PLA massive greed and corruption is wrong.
Here the part no one seems to get get. The victims in all this are people caught in the middle. Israel actions and treatment have given birth to extreme groups like Hamas. Hamas attacks on Israel has lead to anger and hatred and fear of the Palesrine and Arabs.
She said it her self that as kid she had friends telling her that Palestine need to die and wiped out. That has only gotten worse sense she was a kid. You can finds video after video of Israelis talking about how killing Palestine is good and how killing babies is good fun. There an extreme amount of hatred for Palestine in Israeli society. This is because of constant attacks and threats. The goveement telling the people that Palestine are animals and encouraging the hatred doesn't help matters either.
Yet Palestine are constantly being bullied and oppressed and treated like animals. They are even killed often for minor or no reason at all. Hamas and PLA use thus to fuel hatred for Israel and Jewish people.
So the real victims are people caught in middle. The Palestine people have suffered and died far more then Israelis have. They are way more of a victim then the Israeli people are.
Here the harsh truth of things. The Palestine people been screwed over at every turn for the past 56 years. They have never been given any kind of chance to lead peaceful lives and prosperity.
Israel treatment and policies on Palestine is beyond brutal. So they are treated like criminals and villains in a horror story with out actually really being one. So they never even get the benifit of the doubt or a chance. They are just lumped on wirh Hamas amd the PLA and thus they suffer for it.
People say we'll Palestine voted for Hamas. Yea they did because at the time Hamas was less corrupt then PLA. They also had more money and resources thanks to Israel then PLA. Those were their choices. It's like choosing between Satan or Hilter. Your gone gone go with the lesser of two evils even though both are bad options.
The Palestine have never been presented wirh a system of goverment built for the benifit of Palestine people. They never had a goverment who sought peace and prosperity for the Palestine people.
On flip side Israel has not help matters by its actions and policies on the Palestine people. Taking their lands and homes. Oppressing them and making arrest and holding them with out charges. Then their the killing that been going and the abuse and torture and sexual assault and neglect of Palestine Prisoners. In short it's the fact that Israel has a boot to the neck of the Palestine people and they won't let them breath. This creates fear and terror which can fuel anger and hate and violence.
People like to point to Gaza and the tunnels and Hamas building weapons in order to destroy Israel. Yet miss that Gaza had been under a seige for 16 years. Even North Korea, Iran and Cuba have not been treated as harshly as Israel has treated Gaza.
The bottom line is the Palestine have been screwed over time and time again by like every one. From Israel to Hamas to PLA to the entire international community.
It's been going on for so long that something had to give. Oct 7th was that something. Things need to change on all sides of this. This cam keep going on. Both sides need to stop fighting over this tiny sliver of land and figure how to live in peace. If not it's going to end badly for both sides. Right now I'm not entirely sure it won't iemd badly for bothsides. It's very possible this gone to far and nothing can pull them back from the destruction that will befall them if things keep playing out the way they are.

That's such a powerful anecdote. I'm Jewish and I can imagine when you're a kid experiencing discrimination like that, it's hard not to have thoughts of talking back to your classmates and other peers that see and treat you a certain way. I give many thanks that you were so understanding of the pain and constant horror of your Jewish peers that you didn't fight back. That takes a lot of courage, and the discrimination/racism is another topic of conversation that is certainly worth talking about that shouldn't be mixed in with other problems.

I never comment. But this is hands down the best interview I have seen during those bloody 4 months.
Lucy, you are truly an amazing human being. Since I was a little child, I have always looked up to you as a beckon of hope. Seeing that we could actually live in peace, realising that yeah, a lot of terror happens, but you cannot be the only one. That there must be other Lucys around. And I have found them. I have many Arab friends, even after Oct.7.
Israel is no saint, but the world has to understand this situation is so much more complex than a 2 min TikTok video. And you are a live example of that الحمدلله!!! 🙏🏾
A lot has to change, this government should have resigned by now, and they have to change the way things happens here, because it clearly didn’t work ever since Bibi made the first step ruining our future and failing on purpose the Oslo accord.
Both Israelis and Palestinians should acknowledge the fact that nobody is going anywhere. Both sides sees this tiny piece of land as their homeland, and we both have to see each other’s pain. We both have no where else to go. And we have to figure out a way to co-exist here, if we want any normal future to our children.
I felt you on those last 10 minutes. It feels like we don’t have any place in our hearts for anyone else’s pain, especially not for those who butchered us and spat on our graves. But for sure, no one should ever go through these kinds of situations. I mainly feel sorry for them, because as me, they didn’t choose to be born there, and all their parents, teachers, and Imams teach them is hate, death and revenge, not leaving a crack for a single ray of light to shine through. We can talk forever about who has the righteousness to the land, but it has already happened. You cannot take the wheel back. Israel is now a fact. And it doesn’t have any intention going elsewhere. All we is want to live in peace والله. Please, Palestinians, join us on a beautiful journey. But if you continue the cycle of violence, there will never be an end to it. Israel will be more than happy to put down its weapons. But we need the other side to do that as well.
Thank you so much for speaking your heart out loud, we love you 🙏🏾❤️
