@ yup. He was the annoying little brother that stole the attention away from him. Then I think in season 6, he realized he better shape up and actually look out for the kid, cuz Elena actually cared and she wouldn’t forgive him again if he killed him again. So he went to school stuff as a guardian or whatever for parent teacher meetings etc. Elena is all Jeremy had and she couldn’t always do it so he went in her stead. I think the town secretly knew about the Salvatores being vampires but preferred to ignore it, as long as it didn’t affect them, they just pretended everything was normal, kinda like in teen wolf, everyone knew the town wasn’t normal but they chose to ignore it. If you saw teen wolf long enough, Danny one of the only regular non supernatural characters there confessed that he knew something like “you think I’m stupid or something?” I don’t remember exactly but it was something like “ of course I know, everyone knows”
I think we kinda forgot that vampires are supposed to be creepy. They seduce people into wanting death. I think Interview with a Vampire does the best job in exploring the moral dilemma in trying to be a vampire and keep your conscience, and Louis flirts with ending himself on a few occasions. Those who can be fine with the lifestyle must give up on being a good person.

Edward has always been a conundrum for me. Because it’s stated in Twilight lore that a vampire stays the age they were turned at. They don’t really grow mentally. And it’s evident in the immortal child storyline (I’m not even going to touch the Renesmee thing). But even though he is 17, he is mentally aware of this dynamic between them and he even refers to Bella and other students as being like children to him in midnight sun. I just feel like… if he weren’t so aware and actively engaged in the fact that Bella was so much… I wouldn’t say younger but maybe newer to the world, it wouldn’t be as weird. It would be a really intriguing concept. That he’s essentially a 17 year old trapped in 1918 while the world continues to move around him and he’s forced to somehow assimilate to new norms.
I think we can’t take political correctness into account with vampire stories. It’s fantasy/horror… also vampires aren’t good guys, they are grey at best.

Stefan did two bad things in season 3 and actually felt remose and learned and also was without his humanity and the bridge thing happened when he was on a revenge-rampage to Klaus who ruined his life. Not justifying it but compared to Damon, he will always be the better man.
I think that’s why I absolutely love that series (at least the first three movies) and Selene and Michael’s romance. Selene may be 600 hundred years older than Michael but he’s an adult in his late 20s who no longer lives with his family; has had relationships before; he has a job; he had a fiancée, Samantha, who died and the manner of her death propelled him to become a surgeon. Michael has lived a life full of love, happiness, loneliness and tragedy and has made many decisions both alone and as a unit with someone else. He has also saved people but also watched them die in his field of work. His life changed drastically after a tragedy he couldn’t control and he had to make changes because of it. Michael and Selene are so different and have lead such different lives, and yet there are also commonalities. They are both also mature and settled within themselves and actually act like adults. I love both of these characters so much and how they are with each other.

Interview with a Vampire has very toxic relationships too (though I know they're older,not teens) love the show! I used to love True Blood. Didn't really care about Sookie. I liked the supporting cast more, especially Alexander Skarsgard (Eric). Sam, Sookie's boss, liking her is probably a little creepy, too, because he's older than her as well. I think what makes True Blood a little different than Vampire Diaries and Twilight is who they're marketed to. True Blood was very much aimed at adults, especially with being on HBO. While the other 2 were definitely for the young adult/teen audience. Also, Sookie was supernatural herself. I don't like her relationship with Bill either (and his accent). In the book series, her story with him was sooo different, but Anna (Sookie) married Stephen (Bill) in real life, so that's probably what kept the Sookie/Bill plot longer. Also True Blood was very dark and now that I think about it, most of the vampires were older and looked their age. Eric and Bill def couldn't pass for high school or college age lol I don't even think you saw teen looking vampires. Jessica was probably mid-20s

Spike was definitely stalking Buffy. He stood outside her place listening to her and Riley have sex. He was breaking into her house and stealing her personal items (cough her panties cough). He even requested Warren build him a Buffy sex bot. He eventually tried to rape Buffy. He is not innocent. The only reason Spike was not hurting humans at that time is because he was physically unable to (chip in his head). Spike and Damon fans are very similar in that they can’t see anything bad their fav does or if they do, they can explain it away with a nonsensical take lol. The point is all the vampires on any of these shows are not innocent. They’re all murderers.
Creatures we would consider vampires existed since ancient times. It’s always interesting to me when similar folklore can be found in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe. Like why did all humans kind of believe in this? Did it exist for real? 😂 That being said, vampire Alexander Skarsgärd awakened things in me that make me feel like I would 100% let him drink my blood 🤡🫣😅
For the record, True Blood was the first out of these three and the other two actually ripped it off, and make the "girl"(Elana/Bella) a teenager loner with very little personality. In True Blood, the first thing we learn about Sookie is that she is a telepath, and is ostracized from her small hick town because of it, the reason why she initially likes Bill so much is because she's not berated by his thoughts due to his lack of brain waves-being a vampire. Bill is drawn to her because Faerie blood is intoxicating to most supernatural creatures and he fall for her as it goes on. The Town and most of her friends and family literally tell her to not date him because he's a creepy weirdo and a vampire. In the End of Season 3, the deceitful ways of Bill are reveled to Sookie and she breaks up with him. She does get back wit him briefly but they do not end up together, she doesn't even end up with Eric. She's with Alcide until he dies and ends up with a Human Husband. I think this show takes itself really seriously because there's a constant stream of characters telling Sookie that she's in a toxic relationship or she's defending a guy who hurt her or is just a monster in general.
Tbf I kind of get where Edward was coming from. Him and Carlise both thought that renesme was a parasite and not an actual baby. It was essentially sucking the life out of Bella, yet she wants to die for it. It’s kinda the same scenario as a loved one refusing treatment for a fatal disease they have, when there is a cure. It’s frustrating but he does apologizes after he cools off. When he hears renesme’s thoughts inside Bella’s tummy, he realizes that the baby is not a monster and understands and respects all of Bella’s decisions regarding the baby. He is a creep and a manipulative asshole and I agree with all of the things you said. I personally didn’t find Edward out of line in the pregnancy arc. The baby was essentially a tumor in his mind. This is what Carlise tells him as well.
2:59 I’ll be honest tho growing up I 100% wanted a relationship like Bella and Edward. As an adult I 100% know how toxic their relationship was but my little middle school brain was looking for that exactly (not a vampire obviously but I was willing to put up with all the toxicity).
I honestly think that they couldn't figure out Damon's character. I'm more than fine with a character being horrible and growing, but they wanted Damon's chaos so bad that it cheapened every moment he did actually grow, because he regressed so fast. In the books, Damon was a monster too, but it was centered on Stephen and when Damon grew, he didn't regress. I fully blame the writers for the way Damon is.

In the film, Kellan and Niky have amazing partner chemistry, but we don't get more of their story, which is much more interesting than the story of the main flat characters. Fanfics are also great, where there is more of them, some of them are very funny.

Bill and Sookie were definitely messed up gothic romance. Now thinking about it even at the very end him choosing to die so she'd refuse to ever get romantically involved with a vampire again was still manipulative But at least one of her final moments with him was refusing to give up her fairy side for him which I liked. They were compelling to watch because you get why they're drawn to each other. Sookie is everything Bill wanted he wanted light back and Bill gave Sookie mental peace from years of her powers feeling like a disability and until the very end they couldn't give what they found up until they both realized they were doing far more harm to themselves and others than good
I think the age thing is more about a man being a product of a past time, having older values but still being set in the present day and then understanding the world that the girl lives in... At least what I always assumed the appeal was.
As somebody who loves this genre, I have always wondered during viewing these shows/movies, why none of these shows focused on romantic relationships between vampires. While I can understand why they would rather go for the human and vampire aspect (in theory it’s more exciting given the nature of the vampire), I always thought that romance between vampires was more interesting and complex than humans and vampires. And given how much of the vampire “romance” genre is focused on couples that are consisted of a human partner and a vampire, it just has become a bit predictable and dare I say boring ? And the age gaps just make them feel so predatory and just makes the viewing of said cinema not as entertaining. I wish more vampire shows and movies focused on the relationships between vampires instead of humans and vampires.

The other part I am mixed on is how some vampires are written. Bear with me on using Hotel Transylvania as an example. Mavis is 118, but you are seeing her age gradually and have the same intelligence as an 18 year old. So while older than Johhny who is 21, they are on similar intellectual levels plus the fact that Mavis was sheltered by her dad. So this helps me get past the supernatural age difference because they look the same age while being on the same level experience and intelligence wise.
Sookie is of age, but she's a girl-woman at the start of the series and was still "pure"/inexperienced in romance and sex. I hated her personality and choices fr but Bill was scum the whole time and she didn't deserve that as her first experience with love. Honestly, Eric was better for her, even with 1000 years, because he never lies to her, doesn't hide who/what he is, and watches out for her more than Bill did. And Sookie is the one who ends up taking advantage of Eric when he's suffering from amnesia ffff
The thing with Damon is that he became a better person because he wanted to be worthy of Elena’s love. Yes, he abused Caroline and fed on her (she slept with him of her own free will, and I highly doubt they actually went that far considering the next morning she woke up in a nightgown and it’s not hinted they slept together again), and he did kill Jeremy, but one was with his humanity off (and it was off) and he didn’t kill Jeremy to hurt Elena, he did it cause he was both pissed because Katherine pushed his buttons and drunk, and he actually did regret it.
I despise the vampire relationship tropes. They're so tired. Separate from those goofy shows, I also dislike one message being chucked out into the ether quite dismissively: that sacrificing for your partner (woman or man) makes you look weak. It speaks of someone with limited life and commited relationship experience to not consider the perspective of the one doing the "sacrificing". Where the disfunction enters in is if you're not making your own decisions in that regard and if your partner isn't _also_ sacrificing for YOU. I've been in a stupidly happy marriage for 25yrs and hopefully have a decently relevant perspective on the issue.

Every had vamps who were good, simply by putting them next to vamps who were worse. I was a fan of these when younger, too. But the only change was making the older men attractive with abs. Which also could make it a fantasy for delusional older men. I remember turning 18 and how older men thought it was okay to act gross the second it was legal. And I wish the fiction had tried harder!

I won’t lie I’m influenced by that era in writing/RP stuff a bit because I was 13 in 2008 but the weird vampires I write at least are fucking around with people in their late twenties and older. Also Bill inspired me to write an OC who’s from Georgia where he left home and joined the Union Army because uhhh. The Confederate vampire shit is tired and I wanted to subvert expectations (write this gentlemanly archetype one would probably associate with that due to Gone with the Wind and such and then… bam he’s a southern unionist!).
You've definitely got to talk about Buffy and Angel as well. And then there's the glorified Confederate soldier nonsense in all 3 of these stories (not in Buffy, if I'm remembering correctly).
The only way the age gap isn't a problem is if they ONLY date other vampires. So sorry but thats a stupid thing to have an issue with because there is LITERALLY no way around it. Its why when these characters are asked their age, they often give the age they were turned because THAT is, until they meet the sharp end of stake, their physical age. If they were turned when they were 24, they remain frozen in time as a 24 year old.
While I agree that Sookie is the worst of the girls, what happens to Sookie is not just because of Bill. (✨✨Spoiler here✨✨) Sookie is a fairy, so much so that Bill makes that shitty deal of finding people to beat her up precisely because she is supernatural and the queen wants her as a resource. Besides that, she puts herself at lot (I really mean a lot) of danger beyond the dynamic with him. In the first season she goes to the vampire bar (when she meets Eric, who was the guy I wanted her to be with at the time, yep, I was a vampire lore girlie but I def see these shows now as toxic and racist now too) it was to discover the wave of murders of women who had relationships with vampiresin her town, nancy drewing even though she wasnt a police officer, obstructing justice at times. Bill didn't even want her to go but that was all on Sookie, she was the “pick me because I'm not like the other girls” stereotype indeed but they did try to justify violence aganst her by the lore of the series itself and even another love interests (ie Eric, Alcide and even Sam with the maenad plot). Even so, Bill sucks, he's def the worst.
I like what you said about PHYSICALLY they look young and handsome, and in twilight they said they stop developing at the age they were turned which is why it was forbidden to turn children. That being said in. A fantastical world, if you live long enough you gain knowledge and understandin of development, like Edward and Stephan both being 17 at the time of their turning but they still had time to learn and grow.m. BUT if you put it in the context of the real world, think of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they can learn and understand up to a certain point but after that, no matter how long they live they will never be able to understand, and develop more, because their body is essentially dead no heart beat, no brain activity that shows on a medical device, so a vampire turned at 17, would act like 17 yr old forever. They wouldn’t have the same ability to comprehend the way, say.. a 40 yr old would. Etc But that’s if you put it in a realistic context then I GUESS it would be okay because they would forever be at the same level of maturity.. but the human would continue to grow older and wiser, the vamp wouldn’t Okay that was a long one

I didn’t actually watch twilight until i was 20 and when i did I didn’t feel like it was aspirationally romantic in the way it sold itself as when i was a tween, moreso two eternal angsty, dorky teens find the precise person to match their freak. still kinda cute, just not in the sort of “epic love story” way.
I hated Dalena, for me it didn't make any sense to have all that development and overcoming alongside Estefan only to lose everything in one season with the brother who did absurd things throughout the series! and even placing him as a hero, the argument was: "Ah, but he suffered a lot", "he is misunderstood", guys, everyone in the series suffered and was misunderstood.

About the only onscreen vampire romance I can think of that’s actually done right without any problematic situations is First Kill. And the ironic thing about that is that it’s the first time the vampire romance is a lesbian couple as oppose to the typical het pairing. Pretty much all the problematic tropes you mentioned is devoid from Juliette of First Kill so much so that many people find themselves relating slightly more with Juliette than they do with her monster hunter girlfriend. For example first time the vampire (Juliette) is actually a teenager and not some creepy 100+ year old going after teenagers.
It's the teenage fantasy, an older guy who's mature and cultured, who's seen a zillion women but he sees something special in you. It's why underage girls fall for predators unfortunately.
I think these books are written FOR the age gap to some degree. I always see late teens through mid 20s with 100+ year old vamp in vampire romances. It's easy to have vampires born in normal cities or something and age normally and date within age range. I had an inkling but it makes sense after seeing the state of young adult books these days.
Or maybe these relationships are metaphors for doomed relationships? Power imbalance? What people forget is fantasy lets you talk about real issues behind something that isnt real. To spell it out, I think the intention of these shows were pure to begin with. Vampires are allegories for predators. You know how also preys on young women? Older men. in the case of these shows, they were allegories for abuse and the parasitic macho-frat culture of the 00s. Season 1 of TVD had a totally different vibe as did True blood season 1, which was talking about racism too. And tbf vampires can be found in many cultures not just eastern Europe.
I think people overlook stefan's manipulation and emotional abuse towards elena, cause he willingly put himself in the vecinity of an emotionally vulnerable 17 yo girl who he had just lost her parents and used his 178 yo carisma to get her to like him and invited a lot of problems to her live just cause she looked like the woman who manipulated him. Literally 90% of the bad things that happen to elena and her gang is because of stefan.
I don't think you know what manipulation and emotional abuse means 💀 Stefan's goal was never to "make" Elena fall in love with him. For all we know she could have rejected him first second and Stefan would have been fine with that 💀 And if Stefan didn't want to get to know Elena, then Damon would have eventually forced himself in her life to get Katherine out of the tomb (through Bonnie for example). And acting like Stefan brought problems when most of the problems in season 1 were caused by Damon 💀💀 And in the end if Stefan wasn't in Elena's life then she probably would have died when Klaus showed up.

I think the town secretly knew about the Salvatores being vampires but preferred to ignore it, as long as it didn’t affect them, they just pretended everything was normal, kinda like in teen wolf, everyone knew the town wasn’t normal but they chose to ignore it. If you saw teen wolf long enough, Danny one of the only regular non supernatural characters there confessed that he knew something like “you think I’m stupid or something?” I don’t remember exactly but it was something like “ of course I know, everyone knows”

Edward has always been a conundrum for me. Because it’s stated in Twilight lore that a vampire stays the age they were turned at. They don’t really grow mentally. And it’s evident in the immortal child storyline (I’m not even going to touch the Renesmee thing). But even though he is 17, he is mentally aware of this dynamic between them and he even refers to Bella and other students as being like children to him in midnight sun.
I just feel like… if he weren’t so aware and actively engaged in the fact that Bella was so much… I wouldn’t say younger but maybe newer to the world, it wouldn’t be as weird. It would be a really intriguing concept. That he’s essentially a 17 year old trapped in 1918 while the world continues to move around him and he’s forced to somehow assimilate to new norms.
I think we can’t take political correctness into account with vampire stories. It’s fantasy/horror… also vampires aren’t good guys, they are grey at best.

I think that’s why I absolutely love that series (at least the first three movies) and Selene and Michael’s romance. Selene may be 600 hundred years older than Michael but he’s an adult in his late 20s who no longer lives with his family; has had relationships before; he has a job; he had a fiancée, Samantha, who died and the manner of her death propelled him to become a surgeon. Michael has lived a life full of love, happiness, loneliness and tragedy and has made many decisions both alone and as a unit with someone else. He has also saved people but also watched them die in his field of work. His life changed drastically after a tragedy he couldn’t control and he had to make changes because of it.
Michael and Selene are so different and have lead such different lives, and yet there are also commonalities. They are both also mature and settled within themselves and actually act like adults. I love both of these characters so much and how they are with each other.

Interview with a Vampire has very toxic relationships too (though I know they're older,not teens) love the show! I used to love True Blood. Didn't really care about Sookie. I liked the supporting cast more, especially Alexander Skarsgard (Eric). Sam, Sookie's boss, liking her is probably a little creepy, too, because he's older than her as well. I think what makes True Blood a little different than Vampire Diaries and Twilight is who they're marketed to. True Blood was very much aimed at adults, especially with being on HBO. While the other 2 were definitely for the young adult/teen audience. Also, Sookie was supernatural herself. I don't like her relationship with Bill either (and his accent). In the book series, her story with him was sooo different, but Anna (Sookie) married Stephen (Bill) in real life, so that's probably what kept the Sookie/Bill plot longer. Also True Blood was very dark and now that I think about it, most of the vampires were older and looked their age. Eric and Bill def couldn't pass for high school or college age lol I don't even think you saw teen looking vampires. Jessica was probably mid-20s

I found out about Skargard family becouse of him, and started to watch his brother in Vikings tv show.
For the record, True Blood was the first out of these three and the other two actually ripped it off, and make the "girl"(Elana/Bella) a teenager loner with very little personality. In True Blood, the first thing we learn about Sookie is that she is a telepath, and is ostracized from her small hick town because of it, the reason why she initially likes Bill so much is because she's not berated by his thoughts due to his lack of brain waves-being a vampire. Bill is drawn to her because Faerie blood is intoxicating to most supernatural creatures and he fall for her as it goes on. The Town and most of her friends and family literally tell her to not date him because he's a creepy weirdo and a vampire. In the End of Season 3, the deceitful ways of Bill are reveled to Sookie and she breaks up with him. She does get back wit him briefly but they do not end up together, she doesn't even end up with Eric. She's with Alcide until he dies and ends up with a Human Husband. I think this show takes itself really seriously because there's a constant stream of characters telling Sookie that she's in a toxic relationship or she's defending a guy who hurt her or is just a monster in general.
Tbf I kind of get where Edward was coming from. Him and Carlise both thought that renesme was a parasite and not an actual baby. It was essentially sucking the life out of Bella, yet she wants to die for it. It’s kinda the same scenario as a loved one refusing treatment for a fatal disease they have, when there is a cure. It’s frustrating but he does apologizes after he cools off. When he hears renesme’s thoughts inside Bella’s tummy, he realizes that the baby is not a monster and understands and respects all of Bella’s decisions regarding the baby.
He is a creep and a manipulative asshole and I agree with all of the things you said. I personally didn’t find Edward out of line in the pregnancy arc. The baby was essentially a tumor in his mind. This is what Carlise tells him as well.

I think the age thing is more about a man being a product of a past time, having older values but still being set in the present day and then understanding the world that the girl lives in... At least what I always assumed the appeal was.

As somebody who loves this genre, I have always wondered during viewing these shows/movies, why none of these shows focused on romantic relationships between vampires. While I can understand why they would rather go for the human and vampire aspect (in theory it’s more exciting given the nature of the vampire), I always thought that romance between vampires was more interesting and complex than humans and vampires. And given how much of the vampire “romance” genre is focused on couples that are consisted of a human partner and a vampire, it just has become a bit predictable and dare I say boring ? And the age gaps just make them feel so predatory and just makes the viewing of said cinema not as entertaining. I wish more vampire shows and movies focused on the relationships between vampires instead of humans and vampires.

The other part I am mixed on is how some vampires are written.
Bear with me on using Hotel Transylvania as an example. Mavis is 118, but you are seeing her age gradually and have the same intelligence as an 18 year old. So while older than Johhny who is 21, they are on similar intellectual levels plus the fact that Mavis was sheltered by her dad.
So this helps me get past the supernatural age difference because they look the same age while being on the same level experience and intelligence wise.
Sookie is of age, but she's a girl-woman at the start of the series and was still "pure"/inexperienced in romance and sex. I hated her personality and choices fr but Bill was scum the whole time and she didn't deserve that as her first experience with love. Honestly, Eric was better for her, even with 1000 years, because he never lies to her, doesn't hide who/what he is, and watches out for her more than Bill did. And Sookie is the one who ends up taking advantage of Eric when he's suffering from amnesia ffff
The thing with Damon is that he became a better person because he wanted to be worthy of Elena’s love. Yes, he abused Caroline and fed on her (she slept with him of her own free will, and I highly doubt they actually went that far considering the next morning she woke up in a nightgown and it’s not hinted they slept together again), and he did kill Jeremy, but one was with his humanity off (and it was off) and he didn’t kill Jeremy to hurt Elena, he did it cause he was both pissed because Katherine pushed his buttons and drunk, and he actually did regret it.
I despise the vampire relationship tropes. They're so tired.
Separate from those goofy shows, I also dislike one message being chucked out into the ether quite dismissively: that sacrificing for your partner (woman or man) makes you look weak. It speaks of someone with limited life and commited relationship experience to not consider the perspective of the one doing the "sacrificing".
Where the disfunction enters in is if you're not making your own decisions in that regard and if your partner isn't _also_ sacrificing for YOU.
I've been in a stupidly happy marriage for 25yrs and hopefully have a decently relevant perspective on the issue.

Every had vamps who were good, simply by putting them next to vamps who were worse. I was a fan of these when younger, too. But the only change was making the older men attractive with abs. Which also could make it a fantasy for delusional older men. I remember turning 18 and how older men thought it was okay to act gross the second it was legal. And I wish the fiction had tried harder!
I guess at least Sookie was like 25 at the start of the show if I remember but the high school vampire romance shit was soooo. I won’t lie I’m influenced by that era in writing/RP stuff a bit because I was 13 in 2008 but the weird vampires I write at least are fucking around with people in their late twenties and older.
Also Bill inspired me to write an OC who’s from Georgia where he left home and joined the Union Army because uhhh. The Confederate vampire shit is tired and I wanted to subvert expectations (write this gentlemanly archetype one would probably associate with that due to Gone with the Wind and such and then… bam he’s a southern unionist!).

The only way the age gap isn't a problem is if they ONLY date other vampires. So sorry but thats a stupid thing to have an issue with because there is LITERALLY no way around it. Its why when these characters are asked their age, they often give the age they were turned because THAT is, until they meet the sharp end of stake, their physical age. If they were turned when they were 24, they remain frozen in time as a 24 year old.
It’s not real it’s fictional/fantasy it’s not meant to be that deep it’s an escape. Same as wizards and witches and werewolf’s.
While I agree that Sookie is the worst of the girls, what happens to Sookie is not just because of Bill. (✨✨Spoiler here✨✨) Sookie is a fairy, so much so that Bill makes that shitty deal of finding people to beat her up precisely because she is supernatural and the queen wants her as a resource. Besides that, she puts herself at lot (I really mean a lot) of danger beyond the dynamic with him. In the first season she goes to the vampire bar (when she meets Eric, who was the guy I wanted her to be with at the time, yep, I was a vampire lore girlie but I def see these shows now as toxic and racist now too) it was to discover the wave of murders of women who had relationships with vampiresin her town, nancy drewing even though she wasnt a police officer, obstructing justice at times. Bill didn't even want her to go but that was all on Sookie, she was the “pick me because I'm not like the other girls” stereotype indeed but they did try to justify violence aganst her by the lore of the series itself and even another love interests (ie Eric, Alcide and even Sam with the maenad plot). Even so, Bill sucks, he's def the worst.

A fantastical world, if you live long enough you gain knowledge and understandin of development, like Edward and Stephan both being 17 at the time of their turning but they still had time to learn and grow.m.
BUT if you put it in the context of the real world, think of those with intellectual and developmental disabilities, they can learn and understand up to a certain point but after that, no matter how long they live they will never be able to understand, and develop more, because their body is essentially dead no heart beat, no brain activity that shows on a medical device, so a vampire turned at 17, would act like 17 yr old forever. They wouldn’t have the same ability to comprehend the way, say.. a 40 yr old would. Etc
But that’s if you put it in a realistic context then I GUESS it would be okay because they would forever be at the same level of maturity.. but the human would continue to grow older and wiser, the vamp wouldn’t

The vampire politics and vampire religion covered in the show were fun and entertaining. Sookie was an idiot.

I didn’t actually watch twilight until i was 20 and when i did I didn’t feel like it was aspirationally romantic in the way it sold itself as when i was a tween, moreso two eternal angsty, dorky teens find the precise person to match their freak. still kinda cute, just not in the sort of “epic love story” way.
I hated Dalena, for me it didn't make any sense to have all that development and overcoming alongside Estefan only to lose everything in one season with the brother who did absurd things throughout the series! and even placing him as a hero, the argument was: "Ah, but he suffered a lot", "he is misunderstood", guys, everyone in the series suffered and was misunderstood.

About the only onscreen vampire romance I can think of that’s actually done right without any problematic situations is First Kill. And the ironic thing about that is that it’s the first time the vampire romance is a lesbian couple as oppose to the typical het pairing.
Pretty much all the problematic tropes you mentioned is devoid from Juliette of First Kill so much so that many people find themselves relating slightly more with Juliette than they do with her monster hunter girlfriend. For example first time the vampire (Juliette) is actually a teenager and not some creepy 100+ year old going after teenagers.
It's the teenage fantasy, an older guy who's mature and cultured, who's seen a zillion women but he sees something special in you. It's why underage girls fall for predators unfortunately.
I think these books are written FOR the age gap to some degree. I always see late teens through mid 20s with 100+ year old vamp in vampire romances. It's easy to have vampires born in normal cities or something and age normally and date within age range. I had an inkling but it makes sense after seeing the state of young adult books these days.
Or maybe these relationships are metaphors for doomed relationships? Power imbalance? What people forget is fantasy lets you talk about real issues behind something that isnt real.
To spell it out, I think the intention of these shows were pure to begin with. Vampires are allegories for predators. You know how also preys on young women? Older men.
in the case of these shows, they were allegories for abuse and the parasitic macho-frat culture of the 00s. Season 1 of TVD had a totally different vibe as did True blood season 1, which was talking about racism too.
And tbf vampires can be found in many cultures not just eastern Europe.
I think people overlook stefan's manipulation and emotional abuse towards elena, cause he willingly put himself in the vecinity of an emotionally vulnerable 17 yo girl who he had just lost her parents and used his 178 yo carisma to get her to like him and invited a lot of problems to her live just cause she looked like the woman who manipulated him. Literally 90% of the bad things that happen to elena and her gang is because of stefan.
I don't think you know what manipulation and emotional abuse means 💀 Stefan's goal was never to "make" Elena fall in love with him. For all we know she could have rejected him first second and Stefan would have been fine with that 💀 And if Stefan didn't want to get to know Elena, then Damon would have eventually forced himself in her life to get Katherine out of the tomb (through Bonnie for example). And acting like Stefan brought problems when most of the problems in season 1 were caused by Damon 💀💀 And in the end if Stefan wasn't in Elena's life then she probably would have died when Klaus showed up.
