    Amy Schumer aside, I liked I Feel Pretty because it was all about her loving herself and how she was her own villain getting in the way of her own happiness and success which I think a lot of us can relate to

    I love how Shallow Hale has such high standards for women's look, but not for men. How many of the men were jaw dropping handsome in the movie?

      But that's part of the point, wasn't it? I feel at least in that aspect there was an attempt at showing the hypocrisy of men.

    The diversity thing is so funny! It’s just a thing in a lot of media, especially from years ago. I’m from NYC and I’ve made friends with people who moved here from other states that were legitimately surprised to see so many non-white people in midtown Manhattan because they grew up watching Friends and Sex in the City 😅

      Happens here in the UK too. Mostly foreign students, but they're surprised how diverse UK cities are.

    I dare say I Feel Pretty is underrated! I agree with you it's probably because of Amy Schumer, but the movie itself is a great message I've shown some of my friends and they ended up liking it too and feeling more empowered after it! Confidence is key! Loving yourself is key!

    These movies about appearances and 'whats ugly and whats pretty' probably has the worst effect on the actors...cuz the casting ppl do this same discrimination towards them irl😢

    I also don't see many people talking about She's Out of My League but also love that movie with how it showed people can influence the way you view yourself, which is sad, but true!

    The main idea of Shallow Hal is: You are ugly, but looks don't matter.

  • @talbrun
    @talbrun 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +23

    the first movie ‘beautiful’ thing is a somewhat nice message but also a loaded thing, I find it a little sad how beautiful or ugly is the metric people use to determine someone’s worth at all, even if someone is not beautiful to you they deserve respect. But then there’s the thing of everyone has a beauty to them and like you said there’s many different types of beauty, it’s a subjective thing and should not be used an indicator of morality or ‘inner beauty’ which I think many agree with

    Shallow Hal is a sad case because it couldve been a really good message but they messed it up big time with all the fat jokes, how tone deaf could they be for that😔
    I love your videos 🙌🙌have an amazing day ❤❤️❤️🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

    Surprised that one scene with the dance contest in I Feel Pretty was considered offensive when it seemed that the crowd in the world was into the act, even in the clips you used. Is it because she was dancing a bit goofy that it was seen as being made fun of?

    My buddies and me thought Shallow Hal was hilarious when we were young but you make good points there that it was making fun of fat people with how they would show Rosemary's real body and that's not cool

    I love She's out of my league, I've always wondered what other people thought of it.

  • @marii8295

    The reason why “She’s out of mt league” representas selfconfidence better than the other ones is precisely because is about a male protagonist. It is way more socially acceptaple and well recieved by the public when an “””ugly””” man dates a “””hot””” girl than the oposite. It’s also way more common in real life for a convetional attractive Woman to be with an “ugly” man (specially when said man is straight white male and cisgender). Now tell me one couple formed by a contevional attractive man and a “unnatractive” woman.

    I feel pretty is literally one of my favorite movies and when I saw it in the thumbnail I came for my own personal drama, so this comment is my start of a live react thread LOL. The speech where she says when we were little we let our bellies hang out and picked our wedgies and we didn't care because we were free and we were ourselves, now imagine that we never let that little girl go because of what other people told us about how we should feel about ourselves.... that hit me so hard as someone that straight up almost died from anorexia and self hatred. I now, after a few years of deep trauma healing and self acceptance, have almost no insecurity about my body or personality because I kind of know my values and what I am and even if I am always evolving it doesn't come from a place of negativity but a place of growth and self respect. Even though I am still physically recovering from ED and my body is still in shambles even 3 years into recovery (thyroid disease, no appetite, digestive issues, etc) and having a child (wrinkly belly, random hip pain, less self care)... it's just a vessel for my soul and it will change and decay but who I am will be forever at some point. SO idk I am excited to watch this and see a new take on the movie I love so much and watched like every other day when I was pregnant with a little girl haha

      I love that I feel pretty never has a makeover transformation. There is never a moment where she becomes more stylish, skinnier, or aesthetically beautiful. It shows how our brains are just narrative writers. She wrote the narrative that she was ugly and awkward and not good enough and she acted according to her narrative. But then she changed her narrative to I am the most beautiful girl in the world and I am so confident, and she acted accordingly. I think there is a lot of realism in that and how people treat her differently but it doesn't even connect for her because she doesn't see herself that way. The bikini contest scene is so lovable imo. Ethan's reservation about her going up is because he thought she would be humiliated and judged negatively but she was so positive and let it roll off her shoulders and was like HELL YEAH we get free beers because i entered haha. Like it wasn't about validation, but fun.
      I don't think they portray her as "obese" but the concept of being mildly unaesthetic even if you are not obese or horribly disfigured is still extremely valid to be insecure and hyperfixated on that.

    • @palacsintakat
      @palacsintakat 13 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      But I also think the main point is BODY NEUTRALITY because they do villainize Renee when she becomes egoistic and douchey to everyone around her and she loses her friends and relationship and job. And how IN GENERAL we need to just stop looking at our selves in such a vain lens because if we constantly focus on our appearance it corrupts our potential and our personality and values

      Now that I think about it, it's also a little unfair to compare and contrast male "looks don't matter" movies to female ones because it's such a different sphere of expectation and standards. I'd love to see a second video of more female focused moves than just I feel pretty! Would be a cooler comparison.

    first of all this video is incredible! the only one that i have seen is I feel pretty and honestly, i really liked it when i watched it! i think the bike breaking was totally unrealistic and did NOT need to be included, but otherwise, I felt like it was a great message and didn't feel like they were making fun of her or normal looking people.

    Ages 0-7 are critical because by the time you're 7 about 90% of your brain is developed. And during that time, you are influenced from inside the home. Once 10-11, you're influenced by the outside of the home.

    I feel like Phat Girlz is a good "looks don't matter" movie. a good "of it's time" piece, as well. showing the main character's turmoil and her process with acceptance and loving herself after a slice of heaven comes into her life, which she then utilizes said influence to turn her life around for the better.

    As little girls we don't feel these things? Absolutely not true. I've felt fat for basically my entire life. I would pinch at my stomach and body in the mirror as a 6 year old. My mom would shame me for eating too quickly or too much, so I started sneaking food so that I could be full or have a treat. My mom has always commented on my body. Even when I hit puberty and thinned out, she talked about it so much. Some trauma happened and I gained weight. Addiction and I gained more. Recently, I lost over 40 pounds and I'm officially at a healthy weight, but I have zero concept of what my body actually looks like in the present ever. It's only when I look back on my childhood pictures and my teenage pictures that I can see that I was never truly fat then, just a kid with a round face who wasn't stick thin. I was definitely overweight as an adult, but my perception of myself in the mirror hasn't ever really fluctuated with the scale ever. It's only pictures taken by other people with other people that I know what I look like. This all goes back to being a fat-shamed child and having little to no concept of my physical self. Kids are absolutely aware of beauty standards going on around them and being applied to them

    About the old woman in Shallow Hal... I've always assumed she was supposed to look more like a stereotypical villain from fairytales because that was how the kids saw her but idk, when I was a kid I used to think all adults were old even if they were like-24 😂

    The Eddie Murphy remake of the Nutty Professor kind of has that message as well and the sequel has a whole song by Janet Jackson called 'Doesn't Really Matter' which you think would have been in the original but noooo....not so much.

    Never watched the Jack Black movie. I tried to watch I Feel Pretty, but it just made me cringe. I thought she was going to hit her head and just feel confident not that she saw herself as more traditionally attractive. I ended up shutting off the movie because it was making me cringe and I thought they were trying to make Amy seem fat when she has an normal adult women’s body maybe a little on the thick side but not over weight. I’ll give it another chance and maybe I’ll like it better when I’m prepared for that type of humor. She’s Out of My League I remember watching in middle school and being really mad at the friend and the main character because of his friend. I’m probably also give that one a rewatch at some point.

      The DUFF casting isn't a problem because you're only a DUFF in the context of your friend group.
      Even if you're the most beautiful, gorgeous woman in the city, you can be the DUFF of your friend group as long as they are prettier
