The wildest thing about the weird Confederate vampire trend is that there were a ton of Southerners who enlisted in the Union army -- not the majority, obviously, but not a statistically negligible amount either. Julie Plec mistreated Kat Graham (Bonnie’s actress) and is part of the reason she was often written out of the show and never given a good opportunity to be happy. The actress has also said that she started losing her hair because they made her wear so many wigs for so much longer than is healthy to wear wigs, because god forbid they let the one black character wear her hair naturally.

I was so young when I watched this show and I remember my sister was more into if so watched much longer than me and she was telling me the whole Bonnie's gay dad plot and I just responded "she's still alive?". I feel like that is one thing I will give vampire diaries credit for (even if they may have not meant to) they set Bonnie up as a character that is typically killed off quickly die and subverted that
i always thought of her as the kinda shadow main character. I liked Elena fine but Caroline was easily my favourite. Elena was a blank slate for the fans to project on but Caroline was the person who seemed to have the most actual story, development and progression.
Caroline is surprisingly pretty cool/interesting, I love her as a bubbly positive vampire it's fun

Small towns might have them more. I went to high school in a small town that had them so often that we didn’t usually bother dressing up for most of them, only we have to call them “parties” since calling them “dances” was too sexual.

Especially when people would have to say the line "I rescind my invitation" as angrily and dramatically as possible, and then the vampire would involuntarily run out of the house at Flash speed. Also, it's funny that they deliberately threw out other very common pieces of vampire lore - garlic doesn't affect them, crosses don't affect them, I think you can still see them in mirrors IIRC, etc. - yet kept THAT, of all things.

I'm a black woman, was a teen watching vampire diaries and fell in love with show. Bonnie of course was my fave, and loved seeing someone like me as a strong witch. However, I did wonder why Bonnie and Damon never happened, actually wondered why Bonnie was either not on screen or every relationship she had was a failure or they died. Now that i'm older (still watching vampire diaries till this day) and I understood why and what happened to kat graham, really makes me sad. They didn't give her character what she deserved smh

They did Bonnie dirty. She could have been the best character - but they just made her a problem solver who’s always getting her heart broken.
Bonnie was the best character wdym?? The fact that she was so powerful and sacrificed her happiness and literal LIFE every time was so heartbreaking. Kat played her so well and her emotions were so raw.
And she still is the best character
They did almost every poc dirty, tyler technically isn't poc for some reason, but Michael Trevino was done dirty, same with Marcel in the originals and so on

I love how Jenny sets up the huge emotional and dramatic stakes of the moment near the end where Bonnie figures out how to end the spell and when Elena wakes up and sees her there and asks her how she did it, Bonnie just has this casual "It was super easy. Barely an inconvenience!" energy when answering her. Watching a Jenny Nicholson video is an unparalleled experience.

The fact that they had a character with survivor’s guilt have their survivor’s guilt confirmed to be accurate, and they chose to basically kill themselves, is pretty incredible. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible.
Not too much unlike Miraculous Ladybug presenting a character who's set up to have an abusive father, where you'd predict the ultimate culmination of his arc would be to break away from familial abuse and heal and learn to live for himself, only for the show to turn around and say "actually he's not even a human, he's just a human-shaped homonculus and is physically unable to go against his 'father's' orders".
Or how 13 Reasons Why basically redeemed or narratively praised every single teen character that died throughout the series, thus communicating that dying or offing yourself in your teen years will only make everyone love you, which is, yknow, not a good thing for a show about a teen offing herself to do.
I don't know why some writers can't resist making the most irresponsible choices for their kid/teen audiences.

Lmao, like kind of a Taika Waititi comedy about immortal vampires with shit memory. They act like they're world-weary, wise and have seen everything first-hand but in fact every single smug recounting of historical & personal events are like wildly inaccurate. Show flashes back to the vamps in the 1700s or whatever then cuts to present day where they make the exact same mistakes over again bc none of em can retain a single life lesson over the centuries.

Back in the 1930s-1950s, every Hollywood studio had what was known as its own "house style", because each studio cranked out over 40 movies per year, mostly with the same slate of actors, directors and writers under contract. By the 1960s, the studios mostly distributed independently produced films, so no longer had a distinct house style anymore (except for Disney which was still producing every film in-house in those days).
I've seen the modern Hallmark Channel compared to old Hollywood, in that they likewise produce about 40 films per year, all using the same production company, and a slate of recurring actors, and most of the movies have the same style.
She leaves out the part where Bonnie is trapped alone in a prison world and eventually driven to suicide. The writers basically used her as a human punching bag.

I think about it multiple times a week
as someone who was in middleschool while all of these teen shows were airing, I felt like the most uncool, boring kid because I never watched any of them and only knew them by name. It's been a healing experience to find out every single show I thought was the cool edgy teen show of my time (pretty little liars, the originals, glee, gossip girl, lost) are all in reality incredibly ridiculous and I wasn't missing a thing
As someone who was also in middle school when these shows came out and felt like the boring kid for a long time before succumbing to the peer pressure, I can guarantee you that it really feels different when you experience them as a dumb pre-teen. And even now as a rational pre adult the nostalgia I just got from reading some of the shows you just quoted (you forgot teen wolf btw) makes me wanna go back to thirteen all over again
