Dude. What an incredibly informative video. I literally feel like I sat down with you and asked you how to make 100K with photography and you answered it so well. THANKS!!
I was traumatized from shooting my first wedding 4 years ago with a bridezilla nightmare. Since then I've been solely a second shooter--- I worked about 50 weddings since. I am looking to get back to shooting on my own and making sure I'm 100% ready. You brought up a lot of great points about finding the right clients that fit you. Thank you so much for this channel. You are giving me a lot of confidence that I can get back to it! THank you!!!!
Some great information. I shot a wedding this weekend (just for family)...still gaining some experience so not charging yet. Great tip about outsourcing.....I spent a full day in NY City shooting the wedding/reception (Saturday) and a few more hours just uploading photos for the bride Sunday morning and editing a few of the photos for her. Very time consuming if your doing it all yourself. Thanks for the tips/insight!
As I get deeper and deeper into the wedding photography industry, I realize that even grossing at $100,000 a year isn’t enough, it’s like a $60,000 a year job when you factor in advertising, 2nd shooters, equipment upgrade/maintenance, supporting software, travel, etc. With that being said, it is still worth the while living and breathing your passion.
I guess everyone has their comfort level and idea of what a 'good job' is for them, but for various reasons (some you mentioned), photography is/can be a fairly stressful job to try to earn a good living at. It makes me glad to have a Mon-Fri IT job that gets me a great income and then I can be totally free to do whatever I want with my photography (and have money for travel too). Hat's off to those that 'made it' in photography and love what they do while they're doing it. That's great.
I'm kinda in a unique situation... maybe. We are going to sell out house and pay off our debts. Then we are going to move into a family home so we just need to put food on the table and keep lights on. Near where we are moving to are wedding venues but most of those venues recommend Photographers out of State, 2-3 hours away, or who they recommend has broken links/websites are available for purchase. I would love to get into Elopements though... destination elopements specifically.
I love you work the ways everything steps by step i love it but I'm beginning what is best lens for weddings cause I was looking rf 85 lens is over my budget
Any other day I'd be like, "yeah, I want to make $100,000!!!!"... today... tax day?... I'm like, "I'm so glad I didn't make $100,000"... but I guess 2019, yeah... I'll go for it. I just need to be tax conscious with my money this time around. Thanks for the advice!
Thank you for the video. We are doing almost all things you have talked about and yes they work. Pricing is the key know your market and maintain your worth.
When you do a social media subscription for a restaurant how do you photograph clients in the restaurant and deal with permissions? Do you post a sign? Ask permission before or after?
In Poland most wedding photography is done for $500. Best one rarely charge more than 1000... Could be tricky to earn $100k😂... Lately there are FB groups where couples ask for photography offering money even as low as $150 and there will be 100 of responses, people are willing to work for this kind of money just to survive and gain some portfolios... But I suppose there are plenty places in the world where situation is similar
when you shoot almost 70 weddings in a year how in the heck do you find time to edit. lol yes I'm a newbie and this might be a dumb question. do you hire people to edit for you since you are so busy with shooting weddings. love our videos :)
Loved the professional microphone bahahaha! Thank you so much Taylor. Extremely helpful. Great perspective and way to look at how to make it happen. Keep it upppp!!!! Thanks! =D
In Honduras, if you price your Photography like competition, most wedding cost 300 - 500$ if you are in a Good Day, and comercial video, is even less if you Go to local restaurants.... but nothing is imposibles ill keep trying.
I've got a question about the filming of this (hope you don't mind). I see the camera is moving ever so slightly; is that an incredibly steady person with incredible endurance, a result of you shaking the table a bit or is this something you do in post? I'm thinking post...but not sure. If it is in post that is dedication to the fine details. Don't let that taint your answer though. :)
Hah I think it's the optical stabilization on the Canon RP - potentially also the table. It seems to be keeping my eyes centred so I figured it's likely the camera
I really like this video ! I had my first client talking about social media ! Maybe something I'll look into. Also want a clothing line. Hit what I think you do really well is looking at it realistically and breaking it down to something that's understandable. Let's see where this goes! Thank you!
Great tips! Though be careful for outsourcing, as doing that costs money. Outsourcing editing for 25 weddings, for example, will set you back roughly 12 000$ (0.50$/image if you give 1000 pictures to couples). But one could argue that with the free time you now have you can get more business... Anyways, your video is very inspirational!
I'm curious about what net income looks when you drill down into expenses like taxes, healthcare, etc. So how much out of 100k goes to taxes? What about health insurance? Do you have to invest in your own retirement account or can you count on government support? Do you have to carry liability insurance in case a client sues you? How much of a $3000 wedding goes to an editor? Second photographer? I think in the U.S., if you're grossing $100k/year, you'd end up south of $60k after taxes (prob. $21k), health insurance (prob. $400/month), retirement contributions (ideally 15% of gross income annually), among other expenses, assuming of course that you're doing what you "should" be doing. That's not too bad in some areas, but wouldn't exactly be living the dream if you lived in California or Boston. And God help you if you get cancer or have children. Sigh. Self employment in creative careers would be so much easier with universal health care.
Not entirely sure. I’m from Canada so health care is all free. I’m incorporated, so really don’t pay a lot of tax since I pay myself a salary based on what’s best. I know a lot of friends in the states that are paying 1/10th of what they were tax wise under the new trump laws. Those haven’t trickled down to Canada yet, but next year will probably be even better tax wise because of it. For other questions, I invest $500 a month and have been since I’ve been 15 into retirement, which compounds well. 3k wedding, my editor is a flat rate of $199 unlimited editing per month. (Peak season I’m probably shooting 12-15 weddings per month for $199 total) Second, usually I do 10%, and I keep all weddings local and east on them. Insurance is maybe $110 a month for gear and 2 million liability. Honestly though, as a business being a creative for sure is best case when it comes to write offs, and in the states you have it really good right now.
oh - and at the start of this, I went back to the lcd to remove the focus point on the pineapple, then cut out that second and did a dissolve over the cut to hide it
