I have a friend who also do wedding photography we kind of want to do partnership but I can't do it until i a have camera and If I could win the giveaway that would be the ultimate game changer for my life..... @itxtabish01
I started with free sessions the first 3 jobs I got. 2 were graduation and 1 was an anniversary. By word of mouth I got my first wedding last year. I charged $150. Then the single mother of one of the free graduations I did was so happy with the way the graduation photos went for her daughter that she booked me for her wedding (which was last weekend). I charged $400 for that one. Since I did the engagement session for her, she had them in her wedding and people asked who took those and now I have some people who are interested in booking me. I’m slowly gaining more volume and now that I have some experience and have a decent portfolio I want to have a website to show my work and promote myself. Your videos have been very helpful. I really enjoy the behind the scenes videos and they have given me ideas of what to do and what to expect. Great videos!
Agreed completely! I think it's a balance. Your business doesn't exist in a vacuum. Sure, you should *consider* how much you want to make, your business expenses, life expenses, etc. but you also have to consider your talent, the market in your area, competitive pricing, trends, the economy, etc.
I once got ripped off on a wedding I did for long time family friends.... all I wanted was $100..... the father of the bride said I shouldn’t get anything because I ate and partied (I skipped their meal because I simply wasn’t a guest so I didn’t think they had a meal reserved for me, which they didn’t, and I did NOT “party”). When I gave them the pictures which they told me I would also get paid they took the CD and said I’d get paid at the end of the month (again, “long time family friends”). When the end of the month came they acted surprised and said they didn’t know I “needed” money.... Then they didn’t like the pictures, which could of fooled me by how many prints they made and framed and mounted on their wall and posted to their social media. Their problem with the pics? They asked where “all the pics” are..? They said I took 10 pictures of them all together but only gave them 1.... I explained I took 10 pics of kids picking their noses and 10 pics of people looking in other directions and I gave them the best pic of the 10, it was 10 pics of the same damn thing basically. The mother looks confused and again says “but... where are all the pics? You took 10 of all of us..?”. Ugh... I don’t do “friends” pictures anymore... I also don’t “bring your expensive camera and take pics of everything too”, their hired photographer will want you dead even if you stand in a corner and take shots without a flash and use a fast lens, the sight of your pro camera will piss them off.
I love how honest you are about doing what you can to get your business off the ground. I noticed that alot of people in the industry wont even acknowledge you even if you offer to pay them for portfolio building jobs. Even if you are not a direct competition to them.
Whenever someone ask me about photography,i always told them to switch to Taylor Jackson channel. Cuz everything you need about pro. photography is in detail
Absolutely love this. Couldn’t agree more. I am getting super tired of the “know your worth” and the logical fallacies when explaining how to determine your CODB and pricing. It’s BS. Thanks for calling it out.
yeah, snowstorm.... My sister lived in Barrie for a couple years, after growing up in Montreal, all she needed to clear her driveway was a wide broom! Clearly this is great info and the only reason the view count isn't in the 4-5 digits is because of the super bowl!
In your local area, I recommend Never be the cheapest because that can make you loose clients even if they like your portfolio even if it is your first year. Just be a few hundred dollars more. You don't want to be known as a weekend warrior who is way underpricing in your area. Destination weddings If you can shoot in an epic place yes do whatever it takes to shoot that wedding. This will definitely improve your portfolio and you always what to improve your portfolio by removing the weakest photos to stronger images as you grow. You also have to consider the day of the week for pricing Friday through Sundays is premium days most want those days but other weekdays could be priced cheaper for clients who have less money. The same goes for certain months That where you could offer lower pricing to clients because its the slow time of the year. There is a lot more to figure out pricing but 150 weddings a year (3 weddings a week) is crazy and I think unattainable when there are only 52 weeks in a year!
Nice works big fan of yours📸 I always love your tip and tricks photography📸 and video making but this video is great how are you able to do that such thing 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥📸📸😝📸📸😝
@Taylor Jackon I wish you would have mentioned on average how many weddings you do in a years time to help people to understand how to price per wedding to come up with a yearly revenue whether its $10,00 or less a year (Partime Photographer) to $100,000 a year full-time photographer with 10 plus years of experience.
Gleamed a few golden nuggets from this so totally appreciated. I love photography and have done 3 weddings for free, (one i was flown to a location, i offered to pay) nugget #1 hire someone for the post processing if time poor, and if needed. I’m ok at this but there are way better gurus at post processing quicker and better cost effective. Nugget #2 relax have fun, cell phone photographers, mothers, all can be fixed with communication, I’m always looking for that emotional, connection photo, end state ppl like Taylor re-enforces that we love what we do, thank you
The camera is such a thing that memories can be saved as a picture and the next generation can remember and see it and I also wish I could save the memories of this world.
Fantastic info Taylor. Loved the customer isn't always right bit I've been waiting to hear that for a while. Enjoy your work enjoy your life - that should be your goal.
Taylor I love how you call Waterloo "just outside Toronto" lol!! It's like nobody else knows where K/W, Guelph, Cambridge is so we all just say TOronto. I know the feeling haha
Great video and advice, been watching you for a little bit, and just now realized (from your saying it) that you're from Toronto. My fiancé is from Hamilton.
I definitely agree with you that holding the finished product hostage and making them pay through the nose to get hard copies of the images is bad practice. That sort of tactic just seems like not a great way to get word of mouth customers, especially in the age of yelp and google reviews. When Vogue magazine is publishing articles about how you should just have your wedding party and the people attending your wedding send you pics they captured with their smart phones, rather than hiring a professional photographer, it becomes clear that it's a tough time to be a photographer as it is, no need to make it harder on ourselves by being shady. :)
I’m putting together a kit for wedding, I’m buying a 85 1.4 , I own a 35 and 50 1.4. Would you say a 70-200 2.8 is necessary? I own a 70-200 f4l but not sure if that will cut it and the 2.8 is necessary for the 70-200.
If you don't use it a lot, it's not worth the extra weight and expense. I use mine for pretty much every ceremony though so I like to have it. F4 is probably fine as long as you have a camera that does well at high ISO. You can really get away with using an 85 for almost everything though
Great info man. I've been looking for this info. Looking good as well with the weight loss man. Have you changed your diet? Making a video about it? Would love to hear your story. Keep Shooting. WSCP
The people who say that your business practices are going to "ruin" a market or industry are the ones most afraid of being undercut by competition. Think of your business first and foremost. Don't consider what others think about your pricing strategy. Only revisit you pricing and marketing strategies if you're not getting clients, or not getting the clients you want. But also be realistic about whether you can attract the clients you want and work toward that if you can't.
If money wasn’t hypothetically an issue for a beginner photographer wanting to get into it. Would you recommend going all out and buying a good camera/a few lenses/kit or would you say just buy a camera and a lens and work your way up to getting more kit?

I hear you man. I paid for rental, travels and as I arrived at the wedding the groom said his cousin will do it… that killed me
This pricing myth is so useful for starters

I love the complete honesty in this video. It has reassured me as I have struggled to get just one client.
Awesome valuable video i have watched many videos but it is very different and very clear explanation.
That was a wise, level-headed, sober and compassionate, yet professional delivery; and from a relatively young man! Well done!
Have you done a video on the types of red flags to look out for before you accept a booking?
yeah, snowstorm....

Great honest video about pricing !
Great points, but I'd slow down on the Red Bull...

I only really use and 85 and 24. I’d say invest in setting up shoots that will book you work
Perfect photography..
Hi Taylor, you mentioned red flags in your video. What are some red flags you would pick up on from a prospective client?
WOW your doing good job
