    Very helpful. I suggest you update this for Big Sur, which wiped my songs/albums & playlists! Thankfully I was able to rebuild my library & playlists/smartlists with a backup XML file I found from my Catalina library. Big Sur music app did not import any data at all.

    Hi Gary, What’s frustrating with the Apple Music app is 1. After all these years, Apple doesn’t seem to put effort in good search. Not even to be able to search in a playlist. 2. The like button so deep in menus. Therefore it is not usable. 3. Very poor music suggestions because of the previous point. For all these reasons I went back to Spotify after 1,5 years of using Apple Music. Until today, I cannot believe that Apple does not listen to its users and look at how other streaming services work. I like your videos! Lot’s of greetings, Dennis 🇳🇱

      Oh, I forgot to mention the bad ease of use of the UI across platforms and between the app en the iPhone. Spotify does a great job with this. Even when Spotify on my Mac is playing a song and I put in my AirPods Pro, Spotify switches directly to my iPhone. Amazingly not even Apple Music does that.

    Hi Gary, This has just answered my question about the frustrating Apple Music. Quick question though, does my music library need to be in iCloud for other devices to use it or can the library be on some other cloud drive eg OneDrive?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you are trying to accomplish by storing your Apple Music media (or Library) in OneDrive. It would behave the same as if you put it on any local storage location. You won't get any special cloud-like functionality from that. If you want the ultimate cloud features, you need to use Apple Music (the service) or iTunes Match. Then your music will sync to your other devices automatically. Otherwise, you can only manually sync by connecting a device to your Mac and choosing which songs to sync at that time.

    • @davidwright8920
      @davidwright8920 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@macmost Hi Gary thanks for your reply. I accept that using Apple Music would be the best but my objection goes to cost. I am only wanting to play my music files, I am happy to pay for storage and would pay a reasonable amount for the app. But when I have to pay an annual fee, for iTunes Match (as I understand), it seem that I am paying twice to store my files on iCloud just to be able to use the Music app. Or is my understanding of how this all works incorrect.
      Regards David

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidwright8920 iTunes Match is cheap. It allows you to sync all of your devices with your music as if you have Apple Music, but without the monthly fee and without access to the rest of everything. If you find that worth $25/year, then do it. Otherwise, resign yourself to having to manually sync each of your devices as needed all the time. Not sure how you see this as paying for storage twice -- iTunes Match will "match" your songs and store ones it doesn't match (rare) but otherwise what is the other time they are stored? They wouldn't be part of iCloud or anything.

    • @davidwright8920

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidwright8920 Storage would be for your files, photos, etc. I don't think iTunes Match uses any storage as songs are "matched" not stored. I suppose unmatched songs are stored, but since that predates iCloud entirely, I don't think it uses iCloud storage. Even if it did, unmatched songs shouldn't be that many.

    Hi Gary - I have a question about sharing access to my iTunes/Apple Music library, which I hope you can help with.
    I created my library years ago and it consists of music ripped from CD's and bought from iTunes. This was all done before my wife got her first iPhone. The library was created using iTunes and saved on my 2014 iMac, running MacOS Big Sur v.11.7.10.
    My wife has an iPhone 13 and I have an iPhone 14 Pro. Both are running iOS 17.4.1.
    I am the Organiser of 'Family' on my iPhone and my wife is the only other 'Family' member. I set up 'Family' when she got her iPhone 13 a few weeks ago so she could share the iCloud+ storage plan we have.
    She has her own Apple ID, which was used to migrate data from her old iPhone to her new one. Her iPhone is using this Apple ID.
    I've turned on 'Sync Library' on my iPhone but the 'Sync Library' option is not showing on my wife's iPhone? For a reason I just can't work out, she is not getting access to my/our music library, which she'd like to.
    Any help or advice you could offer would be very much appreciated.

When I updated to Catalina a lot of my Artworks disappeared and almost a year later since its release is still persisting. So I installed iTunes again with Retroactive, I was not going to replace by hand hundreds artworks. No, you can't get rid of those items now. Just don't use them. Siri works with Apple Music mainly. The best way to deal with that is to name your playlists unique things and be very clear when asking Siri to "play my playlist X" and such. Try different things and eventually you can get it.

    I am a little confused about the music app on iPhone and macOS. I would like to synchronize songs, but according to macOS, only songs in the macOS music app should be synced. So if a song was previously synced on the iPhone but has been removed from the macOS music app now, it should also be removed from the iPhone too. If this is difficult to understand, the simpler explanation is that I want to sync macOS music to the iPhone, just like the music in Apple Music. Alternatively, you can explain how synchronization works between both devices.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are using old-fashioned cable sync (Not Apple Music or iTunes Match) then yes. You sync FROM your Mac TO your iPhone. It has been this way since the iPhone 1 in 2007. The iPod before that too. You store all your music on your Mac, you choose what to sync TO your iPhone, and then you sync. If you completely delete a song on your Mac then it can't be synced to your iPhone after that as it doesn't exist on your Mac.

    Thanks for all your tips. I still hate how Apple totally changed the way the search function works in Music as compared to how it was in iTunes. I have over 30,000 songs in my library and do an Internet Radio show. I search in my library to create the playlists for my show. If for instance, I want to play songs with the word five in it, I could specify to search just in songs. Or, I could specify to just search in artists for names with five in it. Now it brings up Albums, Artists and Songs with the word I am searching for. While it does break them down by category, the format shown is very difficult to work with. It is not in the normal Music spreadsheet format (as it was in iTunes), which made it very easy to play part of a song to see if I want to drag it into the playlist. Now, I must go back and forth between windows every time I play a song to go to the next one. I do get the spreadsheet layout if I use Filter Field, but that shows all entries that contain the word, whether it be in song title, album title, or artist name. So, instead of sometimes getting 50 songs to evaluate, I get 400 names thrown in different categories. They need to allow us to specify what we want to search as was the case in iTunes for many years!
