As a Mac Sys Admin, I agree on everything. Except on one crucial point. The OS update. Before upgrading to a major version make sure that your softwares, drivers, peripherals will still be compatible with this new OS, especially if you're a professional. In some cases an incompatibility can cost a fortune. But I wish more of my customers would follow your advice.
Also make sure compatibility is given, switching to newer Hardware... VMware Fusion, Radiology Systems like Osirix, .... all not suitable with M1-Macs ;)
This OS update is a killer, some of my software is (old licenses, but good still) will simply not run if not (OS 10.15 or whatever the OS was when I purchased the license). Hate it.
and what about the compatibility of all those time machine back ups after an upgrade! Is it just me or is it normal to lose access to older time machine back ups when upgrading to a new os in mac book pro? Is it necessary to make a bootable external with the old os? Or is there a way to plug in the same time machine back up and somehow find all those years of back ups? I started just doing drag and drop to an external ssd for documents. I have never had to restore but not having any access at all makes me lose faith in time machine. Wish there were sterner warnings about upgrading. Would love to know what the heck I did wrong!
I've had a malware problem for over a year now on a 2010 iMac that I have in addition to this 2020 iMac. And what I didn't want to do after viewing a host of iMac adware removal procedures that required a download was to download anything for disposal. With the help of this channel I was able to locate and move to trash the adware that seemed to be able to appear and disappear whenever I looked for it before. You revealed to me different navigational means to find and locate the "TotalAdviseSearch" in the Launch Agent & Launch Daemon folders. I've searched for them before without success. And the video that helped me find the adware had nothing to do with adware or malware removal go figure. So I owe this channel a great appreciation for the help that serves all of us Mac Users. What a relief to get rid of that adware without downloading a fix what a nuisance it was. Thank you very much!
Whenever there is an alert that you uploaded a new video I try to get to it as soon as possible and watch it. I find you right on point, articulate and succinct. Thank you....keep it up.
XL spreadsheets no longer worked when I upgraded to Catalina, so I decided to learn Numbers instead of buying the latest MS office. So I stumbled onto your tutorials on utube, Excellent.....I have spent many night watching and trying out not only Numbers tutorials but Mac tips in general from your videos. I’ve discovered Numbers an excellent tool now I understand how to operate it. You are providing brilliant tuition, cheers, DD from North East England, United Kingdom
Gary you are the best in the business! you are so underrated what's making you the best is the simplicity, and your videos are straight to the point keep going!!
I watched this and dexided to use I cloud properly, as well as letting the Mac sleep...you are right! I am staying with Mojave though, as I have issues with Catalina. Thanks for a great channel I will try and tell people...
I just got a new Air & I'm having issues with the Catalina, as well! I paid $300 more than my 2017 Air & it's worse than my old PC! How can I switch from Catalina to Mojave on this new Air?
What would Mac owners do without Gary the Mac Guru....man, you're a star with your impeccable tutorials, delivered clearly and concisely. Mac owners across the world sleep happily because of your guidance!
I have the same issue. Hired someone to help me get it all together, and I now have a nightmare on my hands. 33,000 untethered photos with no metadata for example...
5:42 - Some other good reasons for keeping the OS up-to-date: - The changes over time are small, but if you don’t update for a long time, the changes might seem abrupt - If you leave it too long you risk having no upgrade path to get to the latest version of the OS. I see far too many people make that second mistake… and then moving from their old computer to the new one is a real pain in the neck. Fortunately Apple is very, very good when it comes to maintaining an upgrade path, but eventually even they have to draw the line.
Hi Gary, I have just discovered your channel and am hooked! This video is great, I keep all my documents and photos on the iCloud drive, so why is it still necessary to back up my MacBook to a hard drive?
Great video! I am definitely one of those who hesitates on upgrading my OS... and now I can't, since I have a mid 2011 iMac 27, and it will only let me go up so far.
I keep two backup drives plugged in all the time. Backups have saved my Kirsten many times over the years. I just lost my 2014 Mac mini due to a disk error. The new Mac comes this week. I know I’ll be back up and running within an hour with all of my files in tact.
Honestly can't thank you enough. I am learning a absolute ton from you. Incredible teaching - whenever I go and look how to do X on numbers from another person I can't even follow it. Really, thank you, gold education here for free. As soon as I've paid off a bit of debt I will subscribe to your patreon Gary. Would really like to learn basic coding - like the video where you show how to run a java script to input data into numbers sheet. Any cheers, just felt like showing some due appreciation for all the hard work
Hi Gary, can you pls. share how to completely uninstall an app and it's associated files without using a 3rd party app? Perhaps a Terminal command? The delete app in macOS doesn't remove the associated files. Thanks for all the great content.
macmostvideo some apps don’t and also default apps that I never use or would use on a specific Mac I want to remove. If I use a 3rd party app remover then once it’s cleaned up I like to also delete the 3rd party app remover completely.
@@HiFiInsider I would never delete a default app. You are just asking for trouble. Just don't use it if you like, but many are integrated into the system and deleting them could lead to problems. For those apps that don't have any way to uninstall them, you just have to do some research. Hopefully the developers you buy from learn to do better.
@@macmost my new 2017 MacBook Air bought on BF sale via Amazon only has 128GB of internal storage. :( That is the reason for this question to free up more space. Thank you for your feedback. Talk again soon. :)
Excellent advice. I too have been using Macs since 1986, and I would endorse everything you say. If there is something your Mac doesn't do, check all available apps. Someone else will probably have noticed it too, and written an app for it. Of course, if it is really good, Apple will probably include it in a future OS upgrade!!
Great stuff as usual. That said, if you *rely* on a particular app or two then definitely do NOT immediately upgrade any software until you are confident everything works and is compatible. Not all developers are able to achieve compatibility as soon as Apple ships the next update. Spoken as someone who counts on Adobe Audition working perfectly at all times. :)
Lot s of good advice but i am being driven crazy by Big Sur on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017). If I leave it to sleep for any length of time I have trouble with stalled apps and have to force quit or even restart to get proper functionality.
Thanks for the great tips! I use the sleep mode all the time except when I know there will be a power outage in my area than i turn my mac off. Am I wrong?
If you get power outages in your area, get a UPS. Then you'll be protected even when you are using it and won't have to get lucky that your Mac happened to be off at that time. th-cam.com/video/MJY1s4przBM/w-d-xo.html
Good info, EXCEPT: as a musical artist, upgrades can be total work stoppers! Mac is notorious for planned obsolescence, and several times over the years, a simple OS upgrade or browser upgrade automatically deprecates expensive software or hardware peripherals, costing sometimes hundreds of dollars and many lost hours of productivity. I'm very cautious about upgrades on Mac - longterm user though I've been.
Agreed. I've learnt this too, having previously upgrading my OS just to find my most valuable software suddenly incompatible! So frustrating. Some software companies take months to catch up with the new OS.
@Macmostvideo Concerning the maintenance the Mac does while in sleep mode: Is there a way to tell if the computer has completed the sleep mode maintenance? If we shouldn’t shut down the Mac because of the maintenance it does while sleeping helps... Then, why does Apple continue to offer that option?
I use a laser printer for normal day-to-day document pricing, but I have a nice Canon Pixma Pro ink-jet for printing photographs. It's been a great printer for that purpose for several years now.
Do you have any video recommendations about, MacBook backup? External hard drive install? Time machine? I just recently bought a LaCie hardrive and I don’t quite know how to use it thank you!
Another great Vlog👌👌👌👍..I am getting through loads of them Little by little. Have two questions Gary if you got the time. Firstly had Mac around 4.5 years..Not a Pro, i'me more a novice. So how do I access iCloud to see what's in it of mine. I know it's full, because apple sent request to upgrade, I have now pennies per month.👍. I am sure you will have a Vlog on it looking into it and managing. Just not found it yet! Link please? 2.. On my favourites page when I start safari all the little boxes used to be coloured and tell what they are. After a couple of software updates..the icons/boxes are getting more and more grey ones and less coloured. Why? is there a fix? Link please if you already have Vlog posted also. Cheers Gary 👍👍👍......Sorry that was a little long winded😱
1. To get an overview, go to System Preferences, Apple ID, iCloud (on the left) and then click Manage at the bottom. But most of what you'll have is probably easily visible in iCloud Drive in the Finder and your Photos app. 2. Not sure what you mean by "Favorites Page" do you mean the Start Page? I'd have to know exactly what you are talking about to answer. Use macmost.com/ask to ask questions. Thanks!
When you have a problem, find out if its supposed to work this way at all. One of the greatest advise that man has ever given Gary! I learnt this the hard way. There are just one too many things that Apple does differently, which just makes clear sense, but typically we are not aware or are so used to complicate simple stuff, it appears broken to us. Rule of thumb, Apple technology does not fail, if something is not working, it is the user - you doin it wrong.
If I use Time machine for back ups, will it save the files from OneDrive? I have most of the files just in the cloud, in order to save space on my macbook... will Time Machine access the files in the cloud and save them?
Great info I am well familiar with a full back up on iPhone and IPad for years. But have not manually performed this on my pro running Big Sur. Is the location to do this like our mobile OS device locations ?
Great video, as always. You are so right about ink jet printers drying up and being generally awful. If one doesn't print a lot, that is an even better reason to go laser. Like you, I rarely print, but when I do, my black and white HP laser works like a charm. I've had it forever, probably 8-9 years. I paid less than $200 for it, and they're cheaper now. I can't remember the last time I replaced the toner. I did recently inherit a color laser, but rarely use it.
I can be away from printers for a long time. Being in 4 different locations I have thrown out a few printers. Laser printers don't dry up, so when I do need to replace one that is what I will do. However, I called epson years ago when a wf3450 wasn't printing and they taught me how to clean the print heads and do a nozzle check. (in the menu) Works every time. I was warned not to run through it more than 3 times. I love that printer. The other wise maintenance trick they taught me was to print a sheet at least once a week. Considered leaving it on and printing remotely but I am far to energy aware for that!
Hi Gary or anyone. I have a Macbook Air with Chrome as my default browser. When I open Safari and go to Bookmarks, my "Add to Reading List" is not bold & therefore not usable. Any way I can get this working? Also, in "Internet Accounts," It shows my gmail as a Game Center. Don't understand this or why it doesn't have Mail, Contacts, etc. HELP! Your tutorials are the BEST! THANK YOU!!
To add a page to the Reading List, first go to the page you want to add. It isn't active because you are looking at your bookmarks, not a web page. If your Gmail address is showing as Game Center it just means that it is using that email address as your Game Center ID. Don't worry about that. If you want to add Gmail as mail, contacts, etc, then click the + button and add the account if it isn't already there.
Not at all. After I watched this video I went ahead and opened the music file in finder and itunes app in order to verify all the files. I'm glad I did there were some files that had disappeared from itunes. However, I'm sitll in a pickle. My main concern is before move the Music folder to EHD to organize albums. But as you know, iTunes files Artists, song, Title. And of course, every song is listed by the artist that is different locations. Before moving the Music folder to EHD can I organized the music consolidating all the songs from the same album into one single folder? Please somebody answer and help me out. Thanks
Just got a Mac 3 weeks ago, migrated from PC. I have learnt sooooo much from your videos. Thank you ! I realize this is older and you may not remember doing it, but you used the term 'question everything', as soon as you said it I heard that little tune from the X Files in my head lol. Fox Mulder used to say it all the time. Keep up the great work and THANK YOU
I have a 2yo Mac, a 2009 Mac, a 12" MacBook Pro, an iPhone SE, and a couple of iPod Shuffles. I use the newer Mac for most of my work, but I am 'scared' of upgrading to Catalina, b/c I will lose 32-bit capability: EyeTV for recording TV and a paid off copy of Photoshop Elements 12. I'm retired, so I'm on a fixed income, and I'm not a 'power' user. Suggestions?
Thank you, Gary! I agree about the cheap inkjet tip. I don't have the need to print documents often anyway. However, photography is my hobby and I like to make big prints from my photos, so I'm using an expensive Epson inkjet photo printer. I use Qimage which has a scheduled print cycle using all nozzles every couple of days. Are you familiar with the print module issues with the last few versions of Mac OS have? Its very difficult to print using color profiles on a color calibrated system from editing apps like Lightroom Classic and have prints that look like what one sees on calibrated monitors. Also the print module will never remember print settings. That's why I use Qimage. Seems like a common problem that many photographers complain about. It seems earlier Mac OS versions didn't have these issues (at least that is what I've read). I've been migrating over to an all Mac landscape the past couple of years and I never had these photo print issues with MS Windows (one of the few things that worked well) so I am surprised that Mac has this problem since I thought generally Apple catered more to the publishing and visual arts community rather than office work. I very much appreciate all your tutorials on using the Mac OS! It has really helped make the transition from MS Windows much easier!
Gary, your posts have helped me broaden my knowledge with Mac. I love my Mac and have been amazed at all the things you have taught me I can do with it. Please keep these posts coming. I really enjoy them and appreciate you so much. You are a such a big help!! When I have a question, I go to your posts and figure out the answer. I have always been a fan of apple products over any others. Thank you so much !!! Apple should show you some gratitude !!!
I have been putting my Mac to sleep for the past 9 years, but, learning that it consumes considerable power even when it is asleep, I have started shutting down the Mac at nights when I am finished for the day and also when I happen to go out of the home for 2 or 3 hours. Is this bad and has to be changed?
First, don't you simply have it plugged in at night? So what difference does it make as the battery will still be charged? Second, it shouldn't drain the battery much at night. Could be that your battery is getting old and losing power on its own (is it 9 years old?) Or, it could be an app is misbehaving.
I've learned something from every video of yours that I have watched. Thank you so much. However, I'm going to disagree with you on point #6 of this video (Update your Mac). Twice I've had to revert back to an older operating system because a program I use doesn't work with the new operating system. The latest is I updated to Big Sur from High Sierra. Quickbooks doesn't work in Big Sur. I downgraded to Catalina and it's working again but not as well as when I used High Sierra.
Hey Gary, I’m a new Mac user. Just bought my first Mac ever, a m1 MacBook and I wanted to ask you about turning it off. I’ve noticed that when I put it to sleep, ram usage starts to build up and after a few days it may be using 10 or more gigs of ram without using any application. The only thing that runs in the background is bitdefender as I haven’t installed any apps at the moment. But everything seems to be using more ram the more I use my pc without turning it completely off. When I completely shut it down or restart it, everything uses less ram. I wanted to ask if that’s normal on macs as I come from windows and I’m wondering if I got a defective unit.
I have a question and I'm sure you can answer it. I am new to Mac and I travel a nominal amount. I have an 256Mb SDXC Card, that have movies stored on it that I watch on the plane to help pass the time. These were added from my old Windows based PC, and they are in *.MP4 format. Is it possible to use this SDXC card on my new MacBook Pro to watch the same movies on this now (using the included SDXC reader) or do should the card have been formatted it with ExFat before my Mac will read it, not write to it just read? Thanks in advance and keep up the great tips.
I tried it but it didn't work very well so I thought that I might have to have formatted it in ExFat (so that it might read on both computers) but the SDXC still reads on my Asus Windows 11 PC. The person at the Apple store told me it would work as long as it was only reading and "not writing or copying". I though you might have encountered this at some point. Thank you for the prompt reply.
As far as for upgrading your OS, yeah not always. My late 2013 iMac is listed as supported by Catalina and that's the last OS it supports, but after having on my iMac for a week, it was a complete disaster and completely messed up all my media libraries Turns out I was not the only one having this issue and seems maybe Apple was being optimistic in saying a late 2013 iMac could handle Catalina. Maybe it can but only within certain parameters as far as music/video/book libraries are concerned. Luckily I had a perfect snapshot of my previous setup and was able to revert back to Mojave and have had no issues since. So I'll wait until I upgrade my iMac to a newer one.
My hesitancy in regard to iCloud isn’t the small fee, but rather performance. I live in a rural area and have only DSL (I am nearly 18,000’ from the hut so got only 1.5 Mbps typically) or satellite available. I currently use Viasat as the DSL was so poor, but the satellite is only marginally better (3-5 Mbps most times, but less than 1 during the evening hours). I can’t imagine that having everything on iCloud is going to work very well. Have you done any tests to know what bandwidth is required to have a good iCloud experience?
I haven't tested using cloud services with low bandwidth, no. But why not test it yourself? You get 5GB for free, so why not use iCloud Drive to store some files and see how it worked for you. I imagine if you DO NOT use the "Optimize" feature so every file is on your Mac as well as iCloud, then it won't be a problem. And maybe keep anything large (videos, Xcode projects, etc) off of iCloud.
@@macmost The main reason is the difficulty of getting back off iCloud. When I first got my iMac many years ago, I accidentally set up things on iCloud as that was the way the setup program steered. When I later tried to move things like my calendars back local, it was a PITA. I ended up with duplicate calendars and couldn’t delete the duplicates and it was a mess. I have been hesitant since then to mess with iCloud as it seems not intuitive how to turn it back off.
@@LTVoyager Calendars are a different matter. There's not reason NOT to use iCloud Calendar as it uses very little bandwidth. Only things like Photos or iCloud Drive would be a concern with your limited bandwidth. Why did you move your calendar from iCloud to local? I can't imagine using a local calendar for any reason.
@@macmost Things were not syncing well with iCloud and my two iPads and two iPhones. This was in 2011 so things are likely much different now, but at that time, iTunes did a much better job than iCloud. As my Mac aged and was unable to be upgraded to the latest OS, iTunes started to get funky since Apple wasn’t really supporting it. My graphics card died a couple of weeks ago and I just got a new iMac up and running and the sync in Finder now works really well and is 10 times faster than was iTunes on my 2011 Mac. Maybe iCloud would be better now, but I wasn’t impressed in 2011. I also tend to not trust cloud services and have avoided them (working 32 years with computers made me a little more paranoid than some others), however, I would trust Apple more than most companies in regard to privacy ad security.
I keep thinking about what you're saying about inkjet printers. They were always futzy in the old days but I always figured that's because the technology was new. But they have remained futzy. I've got an old color inkjet that my wife bought a ton of ink for that doesn't work more often than it does. I have a monochrome laser printer in another part of the house that I never even think about. Sometimes I have wireless connectivity problems, but it ALWAYS prints perfectly. I've been considering a color laser, you may have just helped me decide.
Gary, when I go into my phone to call, I get a pop-up tell me I need to put in the password for my DV on one of my email accounts, can you show us how to remedy this?
I have an old Imac 27" I bought in 2010 so I am using High Sierra. It says I can't get anymore system updates. What if any can I do? It runs really good. Thank You for your help.
Hi Gary, thanks so much for all your wonderful informative videos. Really great stuff. I am having a problem with adding an email account to my Mail. I had it in there at one point, but it slowed down and didn't update regularly so I was missing some emails unless I went directly to my Spectrum Mail account. I keep getting (in red) unable to verify account or password. Any fix suggestions for this problem? Thanks.
Great info Gary, Howerve I cannot upgrade to the newest operating system. I keep getting a ‘“lost connection message”. I have two Imacs and they both do this. My internet isn’t the greatest but I am not losing connections. Ive tried a lot of things but finally just gave up. I’m running Mojave and I like it so I guess I’ll stick with it.
Keep "Optimize" turned off, so you have all of your photos local, then use Time Machine to back up everything. For a second backup, you can then easily copy the Photos library file to another drive too.
Gary, I understand what you are saying about problems. But! I have been trying to upgrade to the new OS (currently on Mojave) and I keep getting a lost connection message. I have tried a lot of things but still not working. I have resigned myself to the fact that I must stay with Mojave. My WYFI is good to go with a moderate connectioin speed and consistance response. I have asked for help from the Apple community and got nothing. I am seriously wondering if I made a mistake going with MAC. The reason I left windows was because of the ridiculous upgrades and lack of support. Can you tell me why I get these lost connection messages when in fact I have not lost the connection?
Yes; I’d shut down programs not in use, and not shut the lid until they are properly shut down; apps that use a database, like Lightroom, could get a corrupt database if you shut the lid while it is in the middle of updating it’s database. It might be smart enough to recover from it, at the loss of the last few operations you did in it, but it’s best not to tempt fate.
I just found this channel and found so much good info. I’m having problems with my camera as it won’t turn on...any suggestions? I have zoom meeting and have to be blacked out
The ISP-email thing is a very big tip. I know a lot of people who used their ISP-provided email service for years, moved, and were shocked that they couldn't keep their email address. Most ISPs allow mail to be forwarded from the old address but some for only a month and then it's completely gone. You might alert all your business and personal associates about your new email address but you can be sure that some just won't update your contact information. I've been using AOL email since 1994. Their server-side spam filtering is great and in 25 years I've never experienced a major downtime event or connection problem.
Gary the fix problem (8) is me! I found an issue (for me) with the Dat& & Time cell format and I reported it to Apple as feedback. I found a work around, but it would be nice to have them consider a change.
i bought a new macbook air m1, I am just a light user should i shutdown my mavbook every night, because sometimes i will only use my mac just 1 time for about 2 to 4 hours in a day or may be even once per two days.... please help me for my doult
I resuscitated my old Time Capsule, the flat version, with a 1tb disk in it to use for Time Machine 😁. Put it in bridge mode. So it’s just a node on my network now for backups.
Gary: I live in a neighborhood where we have power outages a couple of times a month when wind knocks a tree branch onto a power line. My Mac is plugged into a backup battery with surge protection, so if I'm home and awake, I have time to shut the Mac down normally. If I'm asleep or away from home, the Mac would just die when the battery dies. Could this uncontrolled shutdown harm the Mac or attached external backup drive?
Robert Summers - where I am, power has been reliable, but there’s been some small breaks in power in the past, enough to reset everything, which shut down my computer in sleep mode, which generally is not a good thing, so now I too use a small UPS (uninterruptible power supply) that I got refurbished cheaply, as well as surge protection for every electronics device, which is essential in storms or old houses with bad wiring, it can fry your devices. When new, my UPS, by Belkin, had an app to go with the computer, which would shut down the computer gracefully if on backup power for more than 30mins or so. When on backup, it also beeps loudly. Failing that, I’d shut it down if leaving it unattended and you can’t rely on the power. As for backup drives, unless in the middle of an operation (reading or writing), they should be fine, but a sudden outage when on could damage a hard drive, yes, if the drive head is in the middle of the platter and doesn’t have time to return to home position. I should point out, I always unmount external drives before putting my computer to sleep, it winds the drive down for less wear; backup or cloning software can be programmed to remount them and do their backup, and unmount again. I don’t run backup tasks when not there, so I shut off the drives once unmounted. Not all drives have a switch, so if you have a power board with switches in a convenient position on the desk, make a habit of it.
Hi Gary why does my backup take a long time when very little has changed in my files. I use time machine with my Toshiba 2TB external drive as the storage, I also use iCloud. I enjoy your tutorials.
@@macmost Hi Gary it takes anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour to back up and I backup around once a fortnight It backs up around 62 gig which is all I have to do but it doesn't just backup changes it does the lot why.
@@jeffcassar8062 One a fortnight? Well that's why. A lot has changed in that period. Caches, system maintenance, and probably a system update and several app updates during that time. Why not back up hourly like Time Machine is meant to. Those hourly backups should take a few minutes and you don't even notice when it is happening. What happens if your Mac breaks or drive fails and it has been 2 weeks since your last backup?
i never shut my mac down, is there a way to have backups still perform when your is asleep? i find when i got to bed at night it sleeps in the middle of a backup or when i leave for work it is in the middle of backup, which i dont always think to stop backing up so i get out of range and it stops abruptly. So to stop stopping a back the improper way as in moving out of range or mac going to sleep, have backups in sleep mode and during a window outside when i got to bed or leave for work, backups while asleep would be good and a window of midnight to 5am would be a great time to not back up, is there a way to do both of those options?
Backups should continue while it is sleeping. Are you saying that you get an error message of some kind or something else showing that backups are not being done? If so, check with your backup drive to see if it is going to sleep or not behaving properly.
@@macmost when ive closed my MBPro during a backup it and then opened it was stopping instead of backing up as if i hit the stop this back up in the drop down menu, it appears to be on the vs the TimeCapsule.
Not sure what you mean. I can't think of why Mail (or any client) would give you "slow" email downloads other than having a slow or inconsistent connection.
Hi Gary. Good stuff. I've been running mas since 1984. Got a 2009 3.2 GHz 27" iMac. which I bought in early 2010. been good until last year. now it won't start up at all. can you please give me some advice.
@@unclecowboy7784 There have to be some Mac experts near you that can take it to. If it is that old, something has probably failed and needs to be replaced. But hard to say.
It was always working good for years.I had already bought the SSD upgrade kit, but it stopped starting .Thank you for trying to help. Is it possible that the pram Battery is preventing it from powering up?
Question..So what would you use as far as photographic prints over 11x17?..I have some G4 Macs and I love them because they are actually worth the money.I would probably get an IMac 5K,if and when i need one.I deal with PCs mostly though because you can get twice or more the computer for the money, and when it's time for business/enterprise,it's Linux boxes and PCs anyway. You can get an IMAc 5K and find some XServers, and run some Linux boxes on the side ...
You'd need a pretty high-end printer to make 11x17 prints. I would just use a mail service for that. Otherwise, you'll need to show around for some hardware. High-end inkjet may be the solution, which is a whole different thing than the cheap inkjet printers that I am talking about here.
@@macmost ..oh,ok,because i already have an inkjet that was like $200 on sale. One person who made a video online said he has to make at least 1-2 prints a week on the inkjet starts having issues..The first time i had a shot printed in just took the SD card out and WalMart printed it..it was a gift and the couple was happy..
I have an iMac Core 2 Duo from 2006 (white plastics version). I always shut it down and unplug it when I’m finished with it since it freezes and I get lines on my screen if I don’t force it to shut down. Shutting it down seems to fix it temporarily. I don’t entirely know what’s wrong with it. GPU issue?
GPU, probably. Some thermal paste is probably worn out inside so when it gets hot the GPU flakes. But it could also be the battery. Is it the original battery? A 14-year-old battery could be failing and swelling, and also generating a lot of heat.
Got a new Xdrive more space.I was just used to dropping files to my X Drive, APFS doesn't let me do that. I did it to save space on my mac. Now I would have to keep those files on my desktop . any thoughts?
@@twicv912 Sorry, I don't know what you mean by "Xdrive." Is that an external hard drive model/brand? Or some cloud service? Something else? If it is just an external drive, then formatting as APFS is the norm now and you certainly can drag and drop files to and from that drive in the Finder as you normally would. So if something is preventing you from doing that, it isn't the fact that it is APFS format.
Wish there was an option to prevent iPhone videos being synched to iCloud, eating my data/bandwidth and quota. Really want to keep syncing photos to there (and benefitting from Photos auto-categorisation) but videos are way too inpractically huge for iCloud - a fundamental issue that is not solvable by just buying more quota (that would eat up even more data/bandwidth and eventually fill up yet again). Any ways out of this dilemma?
One solution is to use a dedicated video recording app. There are many in the app store with some great features. Then set that app to store its own videos and not automatically send them to Photos. Then you can AirDrop or manually sync those to your Mac instead of through iCloud. This is what I do when I film MacMost stuff with my iPhone while on the go, so I can do long 4K videos and not have them end up with my personal photos.
What do you suggest for 2021 as a Mac server providing file sharing, dns, and dhcp services and file sharing storage device? In a all Mac environment with a couple Windows machines accessing Mac file shares.
I agree with the sentiments about ink jets and for years I’ve used laser printers. But as a photographer I would love to have the ability to print my own work at home and I’ve been seeing these ink tank printers with cheap ink refills. Any thoughts on those printers?
Speaking about iCloud. Why can’t I share the music I bought on iTunes Store on my iPhone,to my MacBook? I can share with my iPad ,but not my new Mac... it’s so weird.
I have a lot of 3rd party plugins that I use all the time in Logic Pro. Your advise to upgrade right away to the newest OS is a bit short-sighted because not infrequently these 3rd party plugins need to be updated before they’ll work in the new OS. These 3rd party updates can be as much as several months behind the OS update.
my MacBook Air will freeze at times and can't be fixed until I restart it. Not good. Also I hate the fact that when I get updates there is not enough space to update them. Even after I've moved files to an external drive it will show insufficient space.
Gary’s service to Mac users is priceless. The Apple company should extend him some gratitude.
I swear to god, this guy has mentioned things that are not even in the documentation.
or at least the AppleCare warranty on his devices 😛
I completely agree on this :)
Absolutely, Apple should reward him for great contribution over the past years.
I concur, Gary gives great info.
Learned this the hardway.
There are some soft life lessons hidden within these mac-tips. Thank you for your gentle passion Gary.
Gary you are the best in the business! you are so underrated
what's making you the best is the simplicity, and your videos are straight to the point keep going!!
Gary, I really liked your tip on using Reading List. I have a lot of Bookmarks and sometimes I have a million tabs open on Safari, lol. Thanks again.
just added 7 more macmost bookmarks. I don't want to lose any of what I am finding here! sorry had to!
What would Mac owners do without Gary the Mac Guru....man, you're a star with your impeccable tutorials, delivered clearly and concisely. Mac owners across the world sleep happily because of your guidance!
Solid. Useful. Direct and to the point. Great quality video and audio.
I discovered your channel not long ago and I’m already hooked. Amazing quality and very helpful!
GREAT VIDEO- SOME OF MY APPS ARE 32 BIT - IF I update to latest VERICSTION of mac Catalina I would loose the use of 32 bit apps. Any suggestions? Bob
I have the same issue. Hired someone to help me get it all together, and I now have a nightmare on my hands. 33,000 untethered photos with no metadata for example...
5:42 - Some other good reasons for keeping the OS up-to-date:
- The changes over time are small, but if you don’t update for a long time, the changes might seem abrupt
- If you leave it too long you risk having no upgrade path to get to the latest version of the OS.
I see far too many people make that second mistake… and then moving from their old computer to the new one is a real pain in the neck. Fortunately Apple is very, very good when it comes to maintaining an upgrade path, but eventually even they have to draw the line.
Thank you for these videos! It is a great content for people like me who used windows for their entire life and now switching to Mac.
Depends which app. Does the developer have an official uninstaller or method?
macmostvideo some apps don’t and also default apps that I never use or would use on a specific Mac I want to remove.
First one hits the spot ... my laser printer, Laserwriter 4/600 to be precise, purchased for £600 in 1996 - still works just fine.
Hey Gary, can you turn off file indexing, I always did with windows. if so, how? Please.
Lot s of good advice but i am being driven crazy by Big Sur on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017). If I leave it to sleep for any length of time I have trouble with stalled apps and have to force quit or even restart to get proper functionality.
Could you please show me how to use my computer Mac book air with if I need make as you showing as your and talk for something!
Thank you
Thanks for the great tips!
I’m also a 30+ year Mac user and all of the points weren’t spot on! I’m proud to say I practice each point you made. Thanks for being so succinct!
Do you have any video recommendations about, MacBook backup? External hard drive install? Time machine? I just recently bought a LaCie hardrive and I don’t quite know how to use it thank you!
I have many. Here is one: th-cam.com/video/nel21v1FRmw/w-d-xo.html
I just moved from PC to Mac recently. You have taught me quite alot. Thank you so much for invaluable lesson.
phenomenal videos, I subscribed! I do recommend leaving the time starts of each tip within the description!!! Cheers
I have a brother laser printer. Black and white. Had it over 2 years and only replaced toner twice
Gary you are just the best tutor, thank you SO much for all the help.
Very different. For a Mac you use an external drive and Time Machine.
Another option if you rarely print is to use a library or print store for high quality- to keep the printer from taking up space!
What is the vertical monitor in the background? That looks pretty nice.
Keep up the great work and THANK YOU
LOVE YOUR POSTS! Why would I be behind with my make data if all the files I use and make are stored in iCloud? (even calendar, and email)
make data?
Just got a Mac studio and iPad Pro … slightly lost! Thank you for this video, it’s a start for moi.
Gary is the king of Mac. Genius!! My GO TO for anything Mac! Thank you, Gary!
Thank you so much for your videos! Newbie to Mac from a PC. Your videos are priceless, knowledge gained immeasurable.
It should work. Did you try it?
I tried it but it didn't work very well so I thought that I might have to have formatted it in ExFat (so that it might read on both computers) but the SDXC still reads on my Asus Windows 11 PC. The person at the Apple store told me it would work as long as it was only reading and "not writing or copying". I though you might have encountered this at some point. Thank you for the prompt reply.
@@KennyChas47 What do you mean by "don't work very well?" What was the problem? You can read and write ExFAT with a Mac, but not NTFS.
Up to you. You can keep using this old iMac if you like. But if your goal is to have a newer version of macOS then you will need a newer Mac.
Thanks.
Not sure what "Spectrum" is, but just try adding it again. If it doesn't work, try contacting them for support.
Great info Gary, Howerve I cannot upgrade to the newest operating system. I keep getting a
‘“lost connection message”. I have two Imacs and they both do this. My internet isn’t the greatest but I am not losing connections. Ive tried a lot of things but finally just gave up. I’m running Mojave and I like it so I guess I’ll stick with it.
Great video!!! What color laser printer do you recommend?
Color? Do you mean brand? I don't have a specific recommendation because I only have the one -- hard to access the competition.
Gary, I have other questions for you but first...what is the laser printer you use? Thank you!
I use an older HP LaserJet that you can't get anymore (M175nw). There are newer ones in that line you can look at though.
What is the best way to backup your photos externally? I have lost about 100 photos on iCloud, which are gone for ever.
Thanks again Gary. if I close the lid on my Mac, is that the same as putting it to sleep?
Yes.
@@macmost Thanks again, I've been a Mac user since 1998. You'd think I would have learned something by now! :-)
I have zoom meeting and have to be blacked out
The built-in FaceTime camera? Does it work in FaceTime or QuickTime Player? If not, then: Genius Bar.
This channel is top notch for help with your Mac. Love him!
Greetings from the jungle! (Tarapoto, Perú) so glad I found you cause I’ve had Macs for a decade but never learned everything...its a process. Thanks!
Thank you for both the video and the Turkish language in the translation. Love from Istanbul.
Really great tips Gary! Already doing most of these but will have to try out the Reading List thing.
You are a very good instructor. We learned a lot.
Hi Gary why does my backup take a long time when very little has changed in my files. I use time machine with my Toshiba 2TB external drive as the storage, I also use iCloud.
I enjoy your tutorials.
What do you mean by long time? How long? Are you doing an hourly backup with Time Machine?
Ok will start backups on a hourly basis
Thanks
i never shut my mac down, is there a way to have backups still perform when your is asleep? i find when i got to bed at night it sleeps in the middle of a backup or when i leave for work it is in the middle of backup, which i dont always think to stop backing up so i get out of range and it stops abruptly.
What about slow email downloads when using a gmail account on the Apple mail app.
Thank you.
Impossible to guess what could be wrong from afar. Take it to an expert so they can diagnose the problem and perhaps fix.
Hi. Thanks. but I live in the Caribbean not in the us. Where I purchased it is in Long island NY in 2010. No real Mac Service centers here in SVG
Do I need internet on for MAC to do it’s daily tasks?
For some, like updates, yes. But others don't need it.
do I need to have a time machine backup if I back up all my files on icloud?
iCloud Drive is NOT a backup. See th-cam.com/video/yM-hbmpTfgI/w-d-xo.html
But you suggest back up. I keep everything on iCloud. So isn't that just as good?
See th-cam.com/video/yM-hbmpTfgI/w-d-xo.html
I have an iMac Core 2 Duo from 2006 (white plastics version). I always shut it down and unplug it when I’m finished with it since it freezes and I get lines on my screen if I don’t force it to shut down. Shutting it down seems to fix it temporarily. I don’t entirely know what’s wrong with it. GPU issue?
GPU, probably. Some thermal paste is probably worn out inside so when it gets hot the GPU flakes. But it could also be the battery. Is it the original battery? A 14-year-old battery could be failing and swelling, and also generating a lot of heat.
How do I use Extended journaled on time machine ? seems like I format it, then it changes to APFS. which I can't drag and drop with APFS. TY
Right. Time Machine will format the drive for its needs. Why do you want it to be something other than APFS?
Got a new Xdrive more space.I was just used to dropping files to my
X Drive, APFS doesn't let me do that.
Truly, thank you for all your tips and tricks. Sage advice in this vid.
I think a lot of people use Mac minis for that.
Any Synology or Qanp NAS drive should be able to provide the required services.
I agree with the sentiments about ink jets and for years I’ve used laser printers. But as a photographer I would love to have the ability to print my own work at home and I’ve been seeing these ink tank printers with cheap ink refills. Any thoughts on those printers?
Sorry, I've never used one.
I'm not new to Mac but took a brief 5-6 year hiatus away and now wish to go full bore ecosystem. I find this dude's stuff to be highly informative.
Wish I had found your page before subscribing to the some software folks that promised to clean up my Mac but made it worst.
What do you do with no available windows in pages.
I can't think of what you could be describing by "no available windows" -- can you explain what you are looking for in more
Speaking about iCloud.
Your one of the best !! Tips or REMINDERS !! Excellent ! Thank you !! Had apple "everything" over the years. Forgot a couple of things.
