      Batman IS a mere mortal. People never take the opportunity to kill him when they have it! Even Luthor's dumb henchwench could have easily killed him but she did the cliche "sneak up behind him and put the muzzle of a gun just barely touching the back of his head" routine instead, giving him the ability to disarm her.

    I don't think Joker ever went insane, I think it was all an act. He was always a scheming psychopath, the acid bath just gave him an excuse to reinvent himself. The clown gimmick & claims of insanity served to make him less predictable, his image more grandiose, & to land him in Arkham instead of a proper prison. That's why Ace's power was able to work on him: He was just lying, like he always does. I could swear I saw a quote confirming this, but I've been unable to find it again.

    • @RoosterMontgomery
      @RoosterMontgomery ปีที่แล้ว

      Napier was already a cold-blooded, murderous, career criminal. That kind of mentality deems one "not normal." The chemical bath not only changed his appearance but pushed his already sadistic mind over the edge. What was already there was freed with a colorful streak of theatrical unpredictability added.

      You're probably thinking of a line from Grant Morrison's "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth", where the Joker's proper diagnosis is described as "super-sanity", a heightened form of sanity that allows him to understand things in ways no one else can (thus appearing insane to everyone else).

    18:23 I think we all agree that Batman WAS going to kill the Joker. This is not ur usual Batman that just leaves you unconscious and several injuries, but the fact that he literally threw him a knife just says it all. One of the most tragic moments of the Batman mythology and the DCAU

    • @TheLithp
      @TheLithp ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No, I don't agree. He had Joker on the ropes, but he hesitated: Like Joker said, he didn't have it in him, even as mad as he was. Only Tim would've killed the Joker, & that's partly because he wasn't in a healthy state of mind at the time.

    • @madden7732
      @madden7732 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@TheLithp he literally said I'll break you in two and before even that he threw him a knife at the head but dodged it. Joker just advantaged of Batman hearing his response, got him distracted. The way Batman mistreated Joker's body like a toy when he already exploded after him laughing about his parents trauma just tells you everything, the guy was already sick. It doesnt really surprises me tbh, since in A Death In The Family (comic) event, Bruce also went (very directly said by him) for the kill, but the Joker disappeared and Bruce was left unsatisfied of not have done something to him. Well returning to the DCAU and leaving the trivia, that night Batman cut every friend connection he had, even quit the Justice League, thats why for me this is the most important event of the Timmverse, its tragic and sad because of the consequences of it.

    honestly i think i like the censored version of jokers death more than the one where he is shot.
    the pain of being shot was probably pretty bad for joker and it was pretty awesome to see him get a small taste of his own medicine but i feel that dying by electrocution was more fitting given he gave both harley and tim electro shock therapy.. Probably others too. I think it really sells him getting a taste of his own medicine.

    • @TheLithp
      @TheLithp ปีที่แล้ว +24

      The key part of his uncensored death is "that's not funny." As full of bluster as he is, he's an egomaniac who cannot stand when someone gets one up on him. That's why, unlike most versions of the Joker, this one actually wants to know Batman's identity & finish him off for good. It's also important that Tim is broken enough to resort to intentionally shooting someone but still sane enough to know to protect Bruce from the Joker. The censored death has its own merits, but it's not as strong for the character arcs.

    • @motherplayer
      @motherplayer ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheLithp Indeed. The effect is not the same with Tim just pushing him out of the way and Joker slipping up on his own. Having to face that he no choice but to shoot him allows for the trauma of it all to sink in better.

      @dillonwright13 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Joker’s name being Jack Oswald White is true in an alternate universe where Bruce was killed instead of his parents, and in this universe, Martha became the Joker while Jack has a normal life. Of course, considering he was abused by his father, and he tended to lash out at his former wife a lot(as revealed in Three Jokers), it’s possible the Jack from the alternate universe didn’t have a father, and was raised by his mother. So, it’s possible Joker’s father had the last name Napier, and the main Joker’s father stayed with Joker’s mother instead of leaving her, which would possibly make Joker’s name Jack Oswald Napier in the main universe.

      That episode tied Static to the Batfamily, and he's come back into the scene as a member of the Batfamily several times since. Batman saw Static in action and immediately discarded his usual efforts to keep young heroes at arm's length and began not just mentoring him but literally RELYING on him, a privilege he normally reserves for veteran heroes.\
      It's a bit like what he sees in the Flash, a guy who can fight the darkness, see the world at its worse, and still figure out how to smike. Batsy's origin dosn't allow for that and he's a bit jealous I think. In a very real sense he trusts Flash and Virgil more than he trusts himself.

    What I like is you can see a tonal shift in Joker in Justice League. Before that Joker was more than happy to cause chaos and play with his favorite toy, Batman, even saying there's a routine to their game; he fucks shit up and Batman stops him and they do it all again. However, come Justice League it almost feels like the Joker is getting tired of the same joke, especially when it always has the same punchline. He's actually fine with Lex killing Batman, something he would never have let anyone but himself do before. Also during Batman Beyond he even says outright in spite of torturing Tim Drake and pushing Bruce to his limit, that Joker knows there's nothing he can do to push Bruce over the edge. He's done with the old joke and ready to move on, even if he never could get Bruce to break his moral code, almost like that in and of itself is an even better joke.
    As an alien anime overlord once said in an abridged series: "I just love how easy it is to get away with this shit with you people. I want to transform, you just sit there and let me. I want to blow the planet up, you just sit there and let me. I want reach 100% power, and you just sit right there and let me!"

    I don't understand people have a problem with jack Napier being his real name; having his identity be some big mystery does not 'enhance' the character any. It deprives the character of any backstory, just so the writer can go 'ohhhh, he's mysterious!' such a dumb concept.

      I like when villains have a backstory...is better than the ooohhh so misterious...plus i thought the backstory of joker was revealed in the killing joke that he was a normal guy with a wife and unborn baby and was in bankrup so he try to steal but there was an accide t his wife and baby die. And then he fall in ácido and end like a psyco

    I guess the reason why Batman in this universe never kills the joker (just a thought) is that perhaps he feels guilty for what Batman did to him. In essence Joker was already a villain and Batman made it worse.

    I believe the Joker was in the 1968 Batman/Robin Filmation cartoons. (The Adventures of Batman). He was drawn in a more cartoonish way, and his evil psychopathic character was toned down quite a bit. IDK know if it's quite the DC Animated Universe, but it should be figured into things.
    As for the voice, Mark Hamill is still the best. Other voice actors--John DiMaggio, for example--are good, but only Hamill has that laugh down pat.

    "Without Batman, crime has no punish-line". Brilliant writing. One of my favorite Batman stories is maybe from the animated series, or perhaps an independent movie, I don't remember. But the Joker and all the other criminals of Gotham are sitting around playing poker, telling each other fish stories of the time they almost got Batman, but he got away. Every character gets to tell a story, pretty good ones too, but then they turn to a guy who hasn't said much, and he starts telling a story...of how he's about to arrest them all, because he IS Batman, in disguise.
    The kicker is, at the end, he's telling Catwoman about how this happened, and she goes in for a kiss, saying "Hey, for you I could maybe go straight" or words to that effect. She closes her eyes for the expected kiss, only to wait a moment, open them, and Batman is gone. She then says "damn, he got away from me too".
    EDIT: I got curious after entering this comment, and looked it up. It was the Animated Series, and episode was "Almost Got'Im". So the line at the end from Catwoman was probably also "Almost got'Im". There was another great line I just remembered, from an animated movie I saw on Prime, where Harley is a waitress at a superhero/villain cosplay restaurant, trying to go straight. She ends up hooking up with Nightwing, because he is looking for her to prevent Poison Ivy from doing something horrible. 2/3 of the way through, Batman pulls over and tells her ok, we have her trail, get out.
    She responds by saying "Oh no, you can't just let Nightwing Captain Kirk me and then kick me out. I had to pause the movie, I was dying. I think I saw that like 4-5 times, replaying it over and over while my wife and I both were in stitches.

  • @PyramidHead6

    Animated Series + Mask of the Phantasm, is the best design of all Jokers. The redesign with no lips, no sclera, no hair colour, is an insult to the character, as well as the later design where he got lips again, but no distinctive joker colours.
    If I remember correctly it was because of budget cuts for the later episodes of Animated Series, as the overall quality in animation dropped.
