James O'Brien caller claims 'nobody in Israel wants to see the war end' | LBC

  • James O'Brien rejects the logic of Melvin in Tel Aviv, who admits that while he wants to see Benjamin Netanyahu replaced as Israel's Prime Minister, he agrees with the attempts to 'eradicate Hamas.'
Melvin stresses that 'fighting a war without innocent civilians' dying is impossible and that 'everybody in Israel' is in support of the war.
The conversation also touches on US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer's call for Israel to hold elections to replace Netanyahu.
Schumer, who is the highest-ranking Jewish official in the US government, has warned that casualties in Gaza risk turning Israel into a 'pariah' and that Netanyahu has 'lost his way.'

A former head of Israeli Intelligence has recently described Netanyahu's right-wing government as "Jewish Fascism" and Netanyahu's strategy as based on "Messianic Zionism". For example, Netanyahu's Minister for National Security (Itamar Ben-Gvir) is a convicted Zionist terrorist based on his activities as the leader of the far-right party Otzma Yehudi (Jewish Power).

I'm not Jewish, but I did live in Tel Aviv for a while with my Israeli Jewish girlfriend. Whenever she spoke (perfect) English, everyone assumed (even Israelis and Americans) that she was American.
In fact, on more than one occasion, we'd be overheard talking in a shop, and when we were buying things, I'd attempt to converse in broken Hebrew, whilst the cashier would respond in Hebrew, and then turn to my girlfriend and attempt to talk to her in broken English.
Mind you, to be fair, I doubt many Israelis would learn English with an accent like his!

He's not incorrect about it becoming a pariah state though. Public opinion and support for Israel was between 20 and 30 points higher in Europe/North America before/on Oct 7 and there have been similar drops in other parts of the world.
If that continues for much longer, during the next wave of elections, pro-Israel Western powers will become either anti-Israel Western powers, or at best, neutral to Israel powers. Considering Israel is outnumbered vastly by its neighbours and has few allies in the region, Israel CANNOT afford to lose Western support which is what makes its current course so curious.

It's a shame and the fact that O'Brien doesn't see this is why his country voted for Boris f'ing Johnson is due to willful ignorance that allows him to keep his LBC show.

The caller needs to ask himself why Netanyahu, Smotrich, and Bengavir were able to take and maintain office. You can remove this leadership, but it will not solve the base problems, which are xenophobia, and a gross sense of "divine entitlement".

Israeli Soldiers recently killed a 12 year old boy in West Bank bc he was playing with fireworks bc he was a threat. The Soldiers were behind a big fence, the boy was not even near them. They did not warn, just sniped him dead. With witnesses... Bengevir called that soldier "a hero"... Thats the kind of attitude we are dealing with. Its beyond any sense of sanity...

Inside job Oct 7. Everything points to it. Security teams along the border had their guns taken by the IDF on September 1, On September 10, local communuty councils asked should they postpone events and were told to go ahead by the IDF. The venue for the music festival was switched at short notice from a venue away from the border without explanation. It took 8 hours for the IDF to respond. They had Blackhawk helicopters within a five minute flight of the 15 breaches in the fenceline and it took 7 hours before the first one was in the air. That chopper hit 70 vehicles without any intelligence about who was in the cars. IDF tanks hit kibbutz buildings with high exlposive rounds, killing hostages and Hamas. Netanyahu knew this was going to happen. He planned it.

Well done James, you're an intelligent person and you also look at the wider picture. Your caller, as many isrealis do, is blindly focusing at just one aspect: hamas, hamasi, Ghamas, Hamass, Hamasssss. How comforting for them that is. No need for morality, ethics; no need for conscience.

I think more and more, Israelis, even purportedly level headed ones like this caller, will find themselves isolated from the world. The mass killing of civilians is not acceptable, period, despite whatever perceived threat there is. The fact that he cannot put a number on how many murdered civilians is acceptable, makes his political and moral position reprehensible to a majority of the rest of the world.
