- James O'Brien is baffled by a Jewish Tory councillor named Brett, who says, 'Western people in the UK cannot raise anti-Semitism without raising Islamophobia at the same time.'
Brett also says 'many' Labour MPs are 'anti-Semitic' in the same way as Lee Anderson is 'Islamophobic' and claims the conversation has now 'moved away from anti-Semitism.'
His comments come amid the widespread backlash to Anderson's 'Islamophobic' comments directed at London Mayor, Sadiq Khan. The MP for Ashfield claimed "Islamists" had "got control" of Khan - a comment which has led to him being stripped of the Tory whip.

Well said, I know of Jewish people who have joined the demos in London, for a ceasefire in Gaza, and I also learnt the difference between Judaism and Zionism through some Orthodox Jews who were displaying placards to that effect, during a march pro Palestinians. It must be extremely frustrating for Jewish people who can think by themselves, to have a guy like Brett, trying to turn a conversation about Islamophobia into anti-Semitism in the name of the Jewish community.

As a Jew, originally from North London, I'm getting mightily sick of these confused North Londoners from my former community phoning in to whine about 'antisemitism' when their interpretation of that term is essentially defined as anything said that doesn't praise Jews or Israel. As others have pointed out below, 'From the River to the Sea' or more exactly, 'From the Sea to the River' has been a term incorporated in Likud's charter for decades. Netanyahu has not been using it as a recent reposte to the so-called antisemitic slogan projected onto the Houses of Parliament and chanted by all of us who attend the pro-Palestine marches. He has been using it as a slogan for many many years to remind Palestinians that they will never have a homeland under his watch. To define it as an antisemitic slogan is truly risible.

Depends if your version of anti Zionism includes Israeli people having the right to live in Israel or if you favour a one state solution (putting aside how plausible that would be) their right to exist equally in that state. Sorry to say it but I bet 9/10 people in any constituency couldn't name a single one of their councillors. Maybe 5/10 wouldn't know who their MP was unless they were routinely on the news.

I really think councillors need to take this in and understand it. People doesn't know them by name, they're in because of the badge their name is against regardless of how well they do in the next 2-5 years, people won't be aware.

Why is no-one addressing 'the elephant in the room'? The term 'ant-Semitism' has evolved to include any criticism - in any way - of the state of Israel. This definition - which is also the official definition recognised by the UK Government by the way - is extremely dangerous. Such a definition of anti-Semitism ultimately acts as a smokescreen for the nation state of Israel to potentially commit war crimes and illegal acts which cannot be challenged lest the person raising concerns will be wrongly accused of 'hate speech' towards 'all Jews'. This is very worrying.
