The Inherent Selfishness of the Biblical God

  • Is the god of the Bible inherently selfish? Let's challenge the conventional belief that portrays god as selfless, exploring the notion that he created humans solely for his own glorification and punishes those who don't serve or believe in him.
Please keep in mind that all everything I say here is my subjective opinion, and is intended to deconstruct fundamentalist/evangelical/conservative Christian ideologies from an ex christian perspective

In scripture, the devil never lies, only kills or harms on God's orders, doesn't deceive or mislead.
That god, OTOH, lies misleads, contradicts itself, is selfish and jealous and vindictive. Endlessly craves brown-nosing.
The devil isn't the serpent in the Garden: that god curses the serpent to always crawl on its belly in the dust and never talk. We first see the devil in Job, and he's walking and talking.
That god admits that he pre-planned everything including all the people who he'll send to he[[.
Their theology says that they'll be enjoying themselves in heaven while looking down on all the suffering sinners.
A vile belief system, and I tell them so when they say that they will pray for me.

After watching the Prince of Egypt movie, I read the beginning of the Exodus book. It was a fascinating experience.
    - God, creator of all men, has golden children, he has a chosen people. We know that having a golden child is detrimental to said child and their siblings.
    - God wants the pharaoh to free the Hebrews, so God goes talk to non-pharaoh Moses. This omnipotent God was unable or unwilling to talk directly to the pharaoh.
    - After the pharaoh refusal, God sends punishment to the Egyptians. We know that sanctions on countries will affect the small people a lot more than the leader, yet this omniscient God created plagues that affected little his target.
    - After the 7th or 8th plague, the pharaoh soften his heart and accept the free the Hebrews. Any reasonable being would graciously accept the win. God instead harden the heart of the pharaoh, which allows God to send more misery on the Egyptians. Did God forget his original goal, the freeing of the Hebrews, or is he more interested in torturing people?
    - Each time the pharaoh soften his heart and is willing to do God's will, God harden the heart of the pharaoh until the 10th plague, the butchering of Egyptians children. Talk about an omni-benevolent God!
If that god is real, it does not deserve any love nor respect.

I had an apologist recently tell me that the tortuous suffering of a 9-year-old boy dying from leukemia was "part of god's plan." When asked why god just couldn't end the suffering by healing the young child's cancer, I was then told that god CAN'T do that, because that would violate that child's free will.
So, let me get this straight: from god's perspective, it is far more important that the suffering child "freely chooses to believe in" and worship him, while the child suffers from agonizing pain as his body gets eaten away from cancer.
This is narcissism on steroids (not to mention, sadistic cruelty): imagine HUMANS behaving like this??

Not to mention multiple instances of God punishing people for disobedience or forcing them to change behaviour (which _would_ be a violation of free will).

There is nothing in the text to suggest that actual sexual intercourse was involved - it wouldn't be a virgin conception then, would it? Secondly, the text records Mary as consenting to carrying the child. It would be fair to say that there was a tremendous power disparity between God and Mary which calls into question the freeness of her consent and makes the arrangement ethically problematic. But to go so far as to call it rape, is dishonest. It's more along the lines of an employee acquiescing to the sexual advances of their boss - or even more accurately, acquiescing to their boss' request to get artificially inseminated to serve as a surrogate mother in place of his barren wife.

No Christians say GOD is three gods in one😅. You always make me laugh with your arguments, running away from logic and reason. GOD doesn't LOVE US IN THE WAY WE DECIDE LOVE TO BE, BUT AS THE PERFECT BEING, HE LOVES US SO TO BRING US TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF THE TRUTH.
      What's the definition of GOD?
If GOD is perfect, then you have no option left than to serve GOD. There's nothing good you can do without GOD'S Will.
Reading Isaiah (or the Old Testament), you should read it into context first before trying to generalize it. If GOD created you for something else, then He's the one directing you to evil since HE HIMSELF IS THE PERFECTION.
If GOD created you to serve someone else, it's against what it means to be GOD. GOD is not forcing you to serve HIM, otherwise you wouldn't be here talking about it.😅 HE just helps you by telling you you should serve HIM.
If you love your children , you would help them when they're trying to join ISIS because you love them, right?😢 Your definition of love is lawlessness and carelessness.😅 GOD is LOVE but also JUSTICE.
If you're the best perfect math teacher and you love your students, you would teach them to follow your steps by listening to your teachings carefully. If there are any students that refuse your teachings, they're doomed to be bad at math, resulting in having bad results 😅.
GOD as GOD does things as GOD. So when GOD took flesh, HE took up human nature, HE LIVED a perfect life. When HE didn't become a man, people had the right to say that they didn't really know how to live as men based on laws only, because there's actually no perfect example of a good life in men. Now GOD decided to become a Man so to live a perfect life to show you how to live according to HIM, yet you refuse.
You're happy while doing whatever you want without caring about what's going on out there.

She really shows a very even temperment which I hope I can one day have when explaining why I'm an atheist. I think a major problem with trying to get people to examine their faith critically is that it's very easy to get worked up over the actions and words of God and his followers, and then Christians can claim your atheism is just an emotional reaction. Never mind that this is generally hypocritical (I know my dad gets incredibly defensive when I talk about how Genesis makes no sense) their view is often that atheists are overly emotional and so they don't have to listen. The true God of divine love is a feminine entity. Planet earth itself is feminine in the sense it gives forth life, and the sun that's all part of the cosmos sustains it.
Jesus was born from a feminine entity, all life is borne from females. In the bible where Jesus is seen to acknowledge the Father, it was actually his heavenly Mother he represented, She being the feminine entity known as the Holy Spirit and the God of divine love.
The male God entity in the OT is Satan, he was the male counterpart who worked alongside the feminine entity who together took part in the original creation in Genesis chptr one. Things were going well, that is until he rebelled in heaven. He was wanting exclusive devotion for himself and grew exceedingly jealous of his feminine counterpart. War broke out in heaven, so he was cast out down to the vicinity of the earth. He remains here and is why the earth is in such a mess. Jehovah/Yahweh/LORD and father is actually the wild beast in Revelation, also the father to the Hebrews, whom Jesus said they were from their father the devil. John 8:44

Another key verse you might have used is Revelation 4:8-11 - where the 24 elders are continually prostrating themselves before God, grovelling before Him, telling God how worthy He is (and simultaneously declaring their own unworthiness by throwing their crowns before Him). This type of behaviour is disturbing for all the reasons that you outlined in your video.

you've put into words exactly what my problem is with christianity. i'm 18, dutch, raised a christian and am still occasionally dragged along to church by my parents. my church is one where people are typically more critical and sensible than i've seen many other christians be, but the past few months i've felt so incredibly out of place in all of it. this video explains exactly why. if god is like he is described in the bible - cruel and selfish - why would i ever worship him? and if the bible isn't accurate about god, then why do christians still use the stupid book all the time?? it doesn't make any sense.

6:45 My husband’s “mother” is the way Kristi describes here.. so sick and sad. And since he had a mind of his own, and was strong-willed, he became his “mother’s” scapegoat. She abused him his whole life (still does) because he doesn’t worship the ground she walks on. True narcissism.

Spot on Kristi. People like you, who speak honestly about god, are bound to get criticized and verbally assaulted by believers because they quickly come internally conflicted. But you always take the high ground. Good on you. Excellent video.

As you were describing god, Donald Trump kept coming to mind! Both leaders of cults.

Parrots who go "Squawk! Trumpists are cult. Trumpists are cult! Squawk!"
      Are just reciting from the
creed book of their counter cult.
      It annoys me how something
so devoid of insight becomes so often said with satisfaction as
      ritual pomp.

I recognize the process of going from not liking Biblical God to seeing the incoherence between the official God and the Biblical one(s) to losing faith in God :) Not in a straight time line but more of different processes happening at once. You explain well!
I wish that the good Christians I love could leave the faith of God and still find new purpose and keep (most of) their moral sense :) But I think they are in too deep. It's too difficult to realize the messages they have not only believed but preached for decades, may not be coherent and true. I was just 25 and it was still hard.

There's a comment further up from someone who said he was a believer for 60 years-- then started reading the parts of the bible he hadn't been spoon-fed -- and decamped from Christianity. I wrote saying I admired that, because it is harder I think when older -- but it can still happen, I was encouraged to find. It's also true that as people get older there's a tendency to stop tolerating BS, because it's easy to see that life is short.
