Totally changed the way I listened to music when I heard New Years Day for the first time. I never understood the concept of passion until I heard Bono sing.
My parents graduated in 1952. My Mom loved U2. Just wish I had been able to take her to a concert.
Ironically, they later became the epitome of ego-driven excess in rock.

The interpretation I always heard was: "one man caught on a barbed wire fence" are the soldiers of WWII, "one man betrayed by a kiss" is Jesus, "one man washed on an empty beach" is John F. Kennedy, who was washed on an empty beach during the war, and of course "early morning, April 4, shot rings out in the Memphis sky" is Martin Luther King. Bono of U2, acknowledged he made a mistake, that MLK was shot in early evening and said he sometimes sings the corrected line in concert
It also depends on where you are. Evening in the US is early morning in Europe (albeit the next day☺️)

Especially not the first time hearing it. Without any context, the first time hearing a song is just “words.” No one will hear it once and draw the conclusion that this references Jesus, MLK, etc.

They are actually from the Republic of Ireland, they didn't grow up in war torn Northern Ireland but when they became famous people from both sides were fans of the band and would go to concerts together in peace. They did work with politicians to help bring peace to Northern Ireland and the people voted for the Good Friday agreement which changed the country for the better and there are now a generation of children who have grown up without knowing The Troubles

I would love it for these guys to go back and read up on the meaning of this song (and MANY other ones), but don't forget- Tim and Fred grew up in the church, so if there is one thing I AM CERTAIN that they know, it is about Jesus being betrayed by Judas.
It's a rare performer who can sing the grief - and pride! - of millions and mean it. I get a lump in my throat every time I hear this song, going on 3000 times I'd guess. Even with the mullet, Bono is ethereally fine in this video.

I've read his early bio and know that he is a family man, married his H.S. sweetheart, had I think, 6 kids with her and they are still strong today!
@@jennmillenn A friend of mine and her buddies were looking for their concert bus behind the venue after a U2 concert. They bumped into the band, who made a full stop to chat for several minutes. She was so star struck at seeing Bono in the flesh that she couldn't say a word. She had a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" tucked in her jacket pocket to read on the bus, and since it was the only thing she had that could be autographed, she extended the book toward Bono. Somehow he figured out that she wanted him to sign it, not read it, so he did, and with a nod to the book's protagonist. He was very gracious and personable, and she was mute the entire time! She felt like she'd been struck by angels.

This was what turned me on to U2 and have been a fan since - even seeing them live. So many great songs to choose from.
As others are saying this is a U2 tribute song to Martin Luther King and when they looked so serious it was because he was singing about the assassination of Martin Luther King by a white supremacist in Memphis. U2 identified with the Civil Rights Movement because of the hundreds of years of suppression of the Irish people by the English. The Irish were oppressed, their rights stripped and gunned down in the streets. Both U2 and the Cranberries (check out Zombie by them) were Irish protest bands who wrote about the troubles in Ireland. A lot of those songs are powerful and good musically. They will remind you of struggles that continue here.
Truth! Guys, Check out "Zombie" by the Cranberries. Delores O'Riordan, (the voice in the band), is no longer with us, but her amazing ethereal voice lives on!!! Zombie is a great first Cranberries song
Hey guys, "where is this?" its just a couple of miles from where I am right now in Dublin Ireland, specifically the Docklands, East Wall and Windmill Lane where this was recorded (I think, or Slane Castle). Great shots of the Liffey and Poolbeg 'Lighthouse' :-) And way back in the day when this brilliant U2 song was released - around 1984, Dublin was a grimmer place compared to the vibrant city it is now. But the character of the people was real then as it is today. Thanks for sharing. PS - Bono's mullet? - yeah! A national conversation back then.

I realize you're just young men stepping out into the world and there's still so much to learn. But recognize this: these young men from Ireland weren't much older than you when they wrote this song. While they grew up in war-torn Ireland they didn't stick to Irish themes. They educated themselves about what was going on in the rest of the world. This particular song was a tribute to Martin Luther King who fought for the rights of African Americans before being tragically gunned down. The song itself was a massive hit across the world and U2 would soon become one of the greatest forces in pop music and progressive culture throughout the 80's and 90's. In a way they did what you're doing... they reached across cultural boundaries (which is why we love you). Now that you know the story behind it, please give it a second listen, this time with your eyes closed so that you're not distracted by the video. Much love to you both.

Bono the lead singer of this band went on to raise a ton of $$$ for HIV/AIDS relief & research esp for African countries w/his (RED) line, got a ton of big names & companies to help, as well as tons of tribute albums w/other artists to raise $ for it too. U2’s music also helped bring awareness to many issues w/Ireland where they are from. You all should start researching the bands you like, tons of info & good interviews, keep up the good work😀

Hey, I didn't know what the song was about the first time I heard it, I just knew I liked it. But it didn't take long for the song to bring powerful emotions every time I hear it!
I saw them at 'Forest National', Brussels, Belgium, in '84 and it was f. amazing.
The Royal Observatory of Belgium is a Belgian astronomical observatory located in the neighboring municipality recorded that evening sysmic vibrations and their origin was this concert.
I took 3 days to regain normal hearing.

I was a huge U2 fan in the 80’s and saw the band many times. I was fortunate to met the led singer, Bono. As you have heard this song is about Dr. King. U2 has been a band that is not afraid of making social statements through their music. These guys are now in their 50’s and early 60’s, boy time goes by fast.

Love U2. I've seen them twice. Shed tears too. Their music is emotional and wonderful. First time I paid $30 (or was it $40 ?) for a concert tee was during their 360 Tour, and I didn't hesitate because they donate so much money to needy people around the world.

I literally don’t think that the music video did the lyrics of the song justice in my opinion! The song is so truly powerful and poetic just like the rest of the U2’s music catalogue! But I literally wish I knew what Bono was trying convey with the video itself! The only thing I can think of is teaching lessons to young impressionable minds the true meaning of love and sacrifice! Being a Martyr and dying for a cause is very noble!

The lead singer, Bono, did play soccer. He married his High School Sweetheart and does lots of charity work to this very day. He has often said he doesn’t think he’s a great singer but I enjoy this band very much. I’ve had the pleasure to see them live in concert and it did not disappoint.

"Where the street has no name" is a great song and video. They are filming them making a video in downtown LA and the police even shut it down towards the end of the song.

You need to listen to the lyrics more closely. It’s deep. It’s our history. Very emotional and shows how far the reach of MLK was and still is today.
Bono was a scrappy street kid from a broken home in Dublin Ireland. He and his pals began this band in the 70s. Been the same lineup since the start and still releasing new music.
For anyone who hasn't just sat and listened through their albums Boy and October, I think it's worthwhile. U2 have been around so long I think a lot of people just haven't even heard their first albums.

Larry Mullen, Jr., Adam Clayton, and the Edge are some of the best musicians of all time. I’ve had the privilege of seeing U2 in concert 6 times. Absolutely incredible.

Bono always stood for rights and good causes, "Ordinary Love official video" is a must reaction, it was written to honour Nelson Mandela and U2 were friends with for many years and played played concerts in South Africa.
