It's about MLK but references others who resist injustice non-violently (Jesus was betrayed by Judas's kiss).
U2 are an Irish band
Nearly 40 years later, I still choke up at the line "Early morning, April 4, shot rings out in Memphis sky..." Not many songs have such an emotional effect on me. A very powerful song. There are other U2 songs I like better, for various reasons, but this one is very visceral.
This is an incredible song. Studio version is one of the best things I've ever heard. The song is about MLK, and is beautifully done. There were some that had a problem with an Irish band singing about uncomfortable American history. The April 4 line is the date of his assassination.
As for U2 there are many, many great songs to hear. For a reaction video the live version of "With or Without You" is stunning.
Very well said.
Estou contigo, a versão de estúdio é simplesmente sensacional e aquela abertura poderosa de bateria , a guitarra e logo seguida o baixo, e o vocal primoroso do Bono com sua potência vocal logo no início de carreira!
The original is way better, not knocking the live version, but 🤷🏻♂️
Hate to say it but she picks about the worst versions of these songs. Other people play the original version or official video of the song but she loves the inferior live versions like this one which is just awful.
Yeah the musical production of studio and some live versions of this song is amazing and should be sought out by these channels hopefully on their own since making the effort to listen to a timeless classic.
The intro was interesting however - a time capsule. Bono is the lead for Geo Politics, but sadly, he go caught up with Klauss Schwab WEF as one of their minions. Hopefully, he gets his soul back.
The peace in Ireland he is referring to is the Good Friday Agreement, which established peace in Northern Ireland after decades of conflict. The 25th anniversary of the agreement was this year.
Bono is correct in that it truly was a compromise. Northern Ireland remains part of the UK, but the Catholic minority which wanted to unite with the Republic of Ireland (South) now has greater representation and rights.
If you want a sense of this conflict, you can react to another U2 song, Sunday Bloody Sunday. I recommend the live version on Rattle & Hum.
Greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪,
Love your reactions.
U2 are an Irish band they come from Dublin Ireland,
It hurt so much to hear him being called British
Greetings from America! Many young people today don’t really have clue just how HUGE U2 was in the 80s and 90s. They DOMINATED an entire decade (80s). Time magazine called U2 the biggest band in the world in 1985 for a good reason!
I heard some 20-something who said that U2 was about on the level of Nickelback. 😂😂 Yeah…..I’m pretty sure Nickelback is NOT one of the most ICONIC bands in history. I do actually like some Nickelback songs, but what an misinformed comment. 🤔🫢
When Bono, mentions one man betrayed with a kiss,,,a reference to Judas, betraying Christ, in the garden, identifying him with a kiss.
This song was released in 1984 about one of my heroes, MLK. Love, love, love.
No, it's not about mlk
@@paultaylor9498 Yes, it is. Not just MLK... other things are brought in... but MLK was the inspiration and is the core of the song. Look it up, if you don't believe me.
@keithosmond5730 so 1 verse means the song is about a black man from America who had no relevance to great britain or Ireland.
What about the rest of the song that doesn't mention him.
The song was inspired by the works of Martin Luther King Jr. During the tour when the song first released, and U2 was touring in the south (of America), some crazy person made threats that he would kill Bono during this song if he tried to play it. The FBI took the threats so seriously, that they were on high alert during that concert. Bono said that he was so nervous when he sang that song that night, that he couldn't look out into the crowd, and he just stared at his feet. When the song finished, he looked up, and the bass player for U2 was standing in front of Bono during the entire song ... basically acting as a shield.
The album on which this song was release (the Unforgettable Fire) had another song, in addition to this one inspired by Dr. King ... aptly titled "MLK" ... a beautiful song.
I'm a white son of a Tennessee farmer. My dad died April 5th of this year. And I'm so proud that my dad's death is so close to MLK's, because black families didn't have a lot of opportunities for work in our area for a long time. But my father and his father both hired exclusively black workers, knowing that they had no opportunities...and they paid them fair wages. And they always came home to eat lunch with the family, even though they were initially uncomfortable with that (they had the mindset that the "master's" house ate first). It may seem strange, but we actually had to basically beg them to eat with us as equals. But we all had a beautiful familial relationship because of that. And we're all family to this day because of that.
When my grandfather died, my grandmother was already long gone. So we decided that the widow's seat at granddaddy's funeral should be reserved for the lady that took care of the house...a black lady who I always just assumed was my grandmother. Her name was Alice Anderson, but everyone lovingly always called her Gertrude...she was the closest thing to a widow at grandaddy's funeral. When Gertrude died, her family decided that our family should be sat in her funeral amongst blood family. We all just loved each other that way, and would openly talk about race relations. I even kind of fan fiction the idea that maybe grandaddy and Gertrude had a secret love affair that no one ever knew about.
Bono is Irish..
U2 was playing in Arizona when they were trying to get rid of MLK day. They got death threats that said if they played this song they would be shot. The bass player Adam Clayton stood in front of Bono as they played this song anyway.
(Edited due to factual errors) Btw, these guys had one of the largest tours in History. The 360 Tour. Over 7 million people attended the concert in various venues. It cost $750 thousand a day to operate the tour including 300 people & 180 tractor trailers! The song “ULTRAVIOLET” included Bono’s laser jacket. That would be an awesome video to review (Ultraviolet/light my way” from 360 tour)
Ed Sheeran - The ÷(Divide) Tour : Grossed $776 million with 258 shows and 8.9 million attendees. And the U2 tour was the 360 tour not 180.
@@rogerdaly6326and still less than U2’s when adjusted for inflation.
@@rogerdaly6326 haha! Ur correct. I went to the tour in The GA Dome in Atlanta, GA. One would think I would remember the name of the tour!! Apparently the Ed Sheeran tour has surpassed the U2 360 tour & no one has bothered to update the 360 tour Wikipedia entry. Thanks for the correction!
@@user-xi4nq2wb7h No problem , i grew up in the 70's and some times weren't meant to be remembered ! ! Haha ! !
The intro into the beginning of Prude is a snippet of their song The Hands That Built America which was part of the soundtrack fir the movie Gangs of New York. Set in in 1860s NY and explored the clash between Americans (natives they called themselves) and the Irish immigrants.
There Irish in the 1970s and 1980s it was very violent in Ireland. Bombings assassincinations. The cranberrys was a Irish political band. This songs was about Martin Luther King I was also born on his birthday. Wish I was a quarter of the man he was. People today are not as brave as he was. He knew in his heart it was going to end bad for him. But if giving his life would make it a little better for his fellow man then so be it. 😢😮❤
Bono wrote a memoir a year or so ago, and it warmed my heart to learn that he is a devout Christian and is still married to his high school sweetheart. Very cool guy. 🎶❤️
Agreed. The book is fantastic
The opening was ad libbing from a song called the Hands that built America that U2 wrote for the movie starring Leonardo Di Caprio called Gangs of New york.
As many people have already said here in these comments, Bono is irish, and yes, his fight is for justice and true peace and freedom; catholic people in Northern Ireland have suffered a lot for decades - as part of the protestant United Kingdom.
And I agree with those who said here that obviously your next step should be reacting to "Sunday bloody Sunday".
Then, you could react to some other of their hits: "I still haven't found what I'm looking for"; "New Year's Day"; "One love"; "Beautiful day"; "With or without you"; "Vertigo".
Nice journey for you.
if you listening to this song then please, listen to the original one....Cause its such a beatiifull piece of art and one u2s best songs..With that said Im not an expert of what u2 have made. Have a great day
U2 is from Ireland. Kinda wish you did the original video version instead!
I've always loved this song, but this performance took it to another level. Thank you for this wonderful reaction. I really love your channel for your genuineness.
You floundered at first with your interpretation, but you got to it in the end. U2 are definitely an Irish band, and they were very strong advocates for peace. They came to popularity during the time of the Troubles in Northern Ireland (a war primarily about English vs Irish and Protestant vs. Catholic, though that's a simplification). This song is definitely about MLK, which you got perfectly. If you listen to their song Sunday Bloody Sunday, that's about a massacre during the Troubles in Northern Ireland that set off a fresh wave of killing/protests/violence. They have a long history of protesting this sort of horrific responses.
Bono is Irish, and has been an activist, fighting against British
rule and Irish independence and human rights for all.
When WW1 broke out in 1914, the Irish trained their guns on the English army instead of the Germans, as an act of resistance.
I think u should check out U2 & Mary J Blige singing “One Love.”
Bono is a very thoughtful person. Whole group seems to be good humans. He (at least for a long time) realized that America was a great force for good in the world, despite our problems. A lot of U2's music has a message; Their early stuff (like this) has a much more vibrant energy. Later on they wanted to deliver more thoughts on commercialism or our culture's shallowness, etc. We think this song is just about MLK, but it's also about similar Troubles in Ireland. There is a lot of injustice in the world. Bono has done a lot of work in Africa, and is willing to look honestly at what solutions are working and aren't. U2's guitarist "The Edge" has a unique style, I instantly recognize it. The band has had several songs with religious themes. "When Love Comes to Town" with B.B. King is just amazing.
One man caught on a barb wire fence - world war 1 soldiers going over the fences
One man he resit- a man who refuses to go over out of fear
One man washed up on an empty beach - soldiers being washed up on shore during the war
One man betrayed with a kiss- Jesus being betrayed by Judas
Every man is in their position in the name of love
Early morning April 4 shot rings out in the Memphis sky ,free at last they took your life they couldn’t take your pride - MLK
"The Hands That Built America" is the first song he riffs on, "Pride" is about Martin Luther King, but more than that. Irish lads that always loved the idea of America.
Bono combined two songs Hands that built America that U2 wrote for the movie Gangs of New York with Pride Bono was born and raised in Dublin Ireland , Pride was written as a juxtaposition song which tells of the Hypocrisy of saying I did this in the name of love what injustice can you claim you did for love, The line Early morning April 4 a shot rings out in the Memphis sky free at last that took your life, they could not take pride. (reference to MLK's death and legacy) The reference one man betrayed with a kiss is when Jesus was betrayed by Judas
Bono is Irish... Mother Emmanuel
School should teach A LOT MORE history classes in order for us to learn from it and NEVER repeat our wrongs 🙂
I'd say that the "one man" in all the first verse is literally just one man. I'd say Jesus. Justifies us, and overthrows the powers of the world. Or like the second verse, Martin Luther King.
The pauses are brutal. This isn't a reaction, it's a dissection. It's a live version of the song, so it doesn't always line up with the original lyrics.
Yeah too many pauses. Please do over the right one next time!
Thats why we've been telling her to always do the studio album version first cause thats the way we all heard it for the first time , with original lyrics with no improvising.
They are from Dublin Ireland. Best U2 video is BAD @ Live Aid
oh ok ur reacting 2 my 2nd fav band after v beatles, sweet. u2 r big band, voted band ov v 80s n still going strong n relevant. yeah live ad libn, hvnt heard vis b4, pride was an early hit 4 em.
A song in the lines of Molly Hatchet's Fall of the Peacemaker.
People say they don't understand why someone wouldn't like peace. It isn't real peace if you are being crushed into submission by an oppressor.
The song is about assassination..u2 are Irish formed in the late 70's.
U2 has always been spiritual though my journey ✌🏻❤️
Supposedly, Judah betrayed Jesus with a kiss.
Judas
Im an American living in the UK. For the longest time the perception of the US in Europe (and muchof the world) is the "shining city on the hill" the land of freedom and justice. Sometimes we don't live up to that and it creates disillusionment for those that look up to us. They want/need us to be great because if America is unjust, then what hope is there for the rest of the world? I just wish we would do better.
Keep your positive vibe.
Great song choice! I personally reacted to this song recently, but I didn't see this version. I actually like this one better, the energy is insane.
Only after re-listening do I understand this is about MLK. Without the lyrics on screen, I thought this was a really vibey song.
The intro is from the spng "these are the hands that built america"
NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS SONG
bona was distrated n got v wrong line haha, try sunday bloody sunday, new years day, bad, streets have no name, still havnt found wat i looking 4, with or without u, mysterius ways, fly, running 2 stand still, angel of harlem, beautiful day, vertigo,
My favourite U2 songs are this, Love Rescue Me, All I Want is You (live at Slane Castle). I got the name incorrectly but someone will give the correct one. And Still Haven’t Found what I’m Looking For live with The Voices of Freedom choir
A beautiful song about MLK being here in the name of love. Love and piece that's U2.
This song was performed for Coretta Scott King, with approval... Make no mistake, this is the real deal. And U2, go ahead.
I know the words, but I pulled up the lyrics, and I think I pulled up the same one you originally did cause I was like, "Where's the rest of the song?"
Great song but not the best version. Bono often improvises live in concert between songs or at beginning or end of songs.
Jesus was betrayed by a kiss
Barbed wire fence: google the story of the death of matthew shephard
Wrong. Pride was released in 1984, Matthew died in 1998.
He's Irish
U2 the hands that built America. Main song of the film “ gangs of New York”
I don't know why Bono turned the song into something it was not for this performance. This is why U2 jumped the shark for me back in the late-80's
What? You mean love only has one meaning? A song about standing up for love and acceptance of everyone no matter their beliefs or station in life, has just one meaning. Can you even name the people he’s referencing in this song? All different backgrounds and different struggles. U2 just happens to still be the biggest rock band in the world. So no jumping of a shark has happened.
I'm a Mexican-American man and I live by the words of Martin Luther King and Jesus Christ it's real sad how most of his own people don't live by his words
You have the best confused face ever... Loved your reaction.
Watch the original official version
I will be the brave dissenter here. While U2 has some songs with meaningful lyrics, I just have never been able to find their music very interesting. And, I really not a fan of Bono's vocals. Not sure what it is, but they are boring to me. But, that's the great thing about music. There's something out there for everyone.
hands that built america is another song by them. they are irish
Great reaction to a great song!
Now you can say "Welcome to my U2 channel!"
Wonderful reaction. Peace.
Bono and u2 is a Irish band they are political a iconic band
He's Irish, an America's on a hamster wheel running backwards.
You should watch the Live Aid version of a song called "Bad" by U2. You will be blown away by everything you see and hear. I promise this to you.
Why do you always choose the less known, rarest version of every great song...? Pride a great song fron an IRISH band...
Bono ad libs alot, as an artist
Great reaction
The song is about God, yes it’s also about MLK but it’s mostly about Jesus, you must know U2 to know there early lyrics were quite religious
Bono was born in the Bronx, maybe 🎅
ANOTHER GREAT PIC
U2 SPEAKS TO YOUR SOUL
THE TRUTH !! REALITY
THIS SOUNDS LIVE, CHANGED IT UP A BIT -- STILL GREAT !!!

Dear Mr President- by Pink Britt- says it all!
Bono is a Leprechaun
Se won’t move forward because the powerful won’t allow us to live free and happy, there’s no money in that for them
The ORIGINAL 80's version is MUCH better..
🥰🥰
Great song! But in his opening speach, he referenced George Floyd. That thug's name should never be used in the same sentence with a hero like MLK!
I think the first verse is all about Jesus
You should've watched the original video.
Bono is Irish
One Man - Martin Luther King -
MLK....just one man...but maybe everyman like him...so yeah maybe more than one...but the gist is MLK I think.
I mean there is reacting to a song. And then there is not letting it play for 10 seconds.
And then there’s MEEEEEE 🤓
@@brittreacts only part you got correct was the MLK part
Bono is a Prophet of God🔥🔥🔥
Maybe stop pausing so often and the flow of lyrics will make sense. Lol.
It was brutal. If you're reacting to a live song, it's about the performance as much as the lyrics.
She's a reactor. She HAS to pause, and REACT.
@@patchesblue155I was looking forward to this one. I like her reactions, but she wasn't reacting for most of it this time. She was trying to figure out what the song was about before it even started. She stopped the video too many times and tried to line up the lyrics with the live performance. Let the song play a little bit and go back if needed. I've been to many U2 shows. Bono goes all over the place live, and you need to watch the performance. If you want to analyze lyrics, do the studio version. Again, she has a great channel.
Never call an Irishman British,.
A song written for MLK
It's a song about MLK
U2 is an IRISH BAND
You got the right lyrics. Just that you got the wrong video.
You possess a beatiful heart+beautiful mind+beautiful face...Marry me.
there are so many better versions of this song. Try the original video or the one from Live Aid.
Did Bono just wave around the Pride flag on the scene. To to bad, now my once up on a time amazing idol has fallen in to the woke mud hole, I feel like vomiting. He also once said evil things about the one party leader thats trying to save my country. Bono left the realm of reason in excange for virtue signaling. He also has some kind of delusion that he is an american, he is very much Irish. Maybe he has lived in the USA for a long time and therefore identify as an American though.
6 1/2 minute intro? MLK TRIBUTE...
u2 live aid 1985 please haha
Irish very political in lot of there songs
