How to Resurface a Warped Cylinder Head - THIS OLD OUTBOARD

- It's This Old Outboard. The Cylinder Head for the 87 Johnson 6 hp Finally got here. I did a quick resurfacing on it but it was Warped. It Leaked pretty bad. So did the Thermostat Cover. Finally got it Resurfaced and in the water for the First Run ! (still having some sound issues so hang in there !)

To have a nice flat surface to resurface parts, get a piece of 1/4” plate glass and tape the sandpaper to it. Flatter and a harder surface than plywood. You can usually find one from someone throwing out a old piece of furniture with sliding glass doors.
Hey thanks for tuning in! Yeah I've used glass tables before. But looking around for one someone is throwing away could take weeks. Hahaha. I had a nice piece of aluminum that are use but I haven't seen it in a seeing's how these type of things only come up about once every 10 years the old piece of plywood work just fine! yea you really cleaned up the power range, most ive seen an heard run all have that rough spot.
to get rid of that my father said is a pain in the ass an like you said nobody runs them at that range its either wide open or that sewing machine idle for trollin, great work Cap !

My 9.9hp 1997 Johnson on GPS tops out around 18mph.
Now what I want to know is how SLOW will that motor BACKTROLL?
Because backtrolling is king when it comes to fishing & presenting baits on the bottom for walleye, lg.mouth bass, small mouth bass, pike & panfish. Whether it's presenting jigs, lindy-rig, spinner-rigs.
Backtrolling works great because of the low speeds you can achieve but most importantly keeping fishing lines out of the propeller. The guy in front of the boat will thank you for backtrolling as they can just sir back relax & FISH!😁

The throttle and carb linkage on that motor are different from the older ones very critical

Keep a lookout for a tool called a air file. It will make it easier to shave them heads down faster in the future. I use mine all the time.

I use a marble piece square and glue the sand paper to it the one thing the marble is flat and it don't bend like aluminum or metal can

Why is the flywheel warbling it's moving up and down while it's running not much but it is. could the keyway be loose Whatever just run it. Were did you get that boat?

No...that ain't good my friend. Either need to go back to the stock high-speed jet, or upgrade the carb. That rough running at mid-range is flooding. What will happen is when you try to rev up to high range, it lags until it can clear the excess fuel from the crank case. That fuel doesn't burn fully, and will end up as carbon. In the relatively near future, that will clog up your exhaust.
