  • It's This Old Outboard. 87 Johnson 6hp. Now that I have fixed the Carburetor Linkage, I should be able to Eliminate the amount of Unburned Fuel/Oil mix. It Sound Good and Responds Well to Adjustments but Still Runs too Cold. Gearcase oil change. Water pump & Impeller looks good.

    The motor slowly steering right while in forward gear might just be prop torque steering. Shift it in reverse and if it goes left, you got confirmation. Just slightly tighten the steering friction screw and your off to the races. Regards !

    I worked at dealership in Evinrude 70s to 80s.
    These motors were excellent from 6-15 HP.
    The only issue was the copper water pipe from grommet into bottom of power head would swell closed from salt corrosion causing overheating .
    I pulled dozens of power heads to fix grommets and head gaskets etc.
    Otherwise excellent .
    Sad OMC gone now.

    Years ago I had a 18 ran great in the barrel got down to the boat ramp wouldnt start,LOLLL! Hate when ropes break when your eager to first run on a boat. All you can do is just swear and laugh at it,LOLL! I need to send you a couple of snapin water pee restrictors for the lower pan.Possibly too much water pumpiing out of that hose maybe adding to cold issue restrictor is half that and high pressure only a suggestion....

    Looks like most of the adjustments on the motor are good. The thermostat opens too soon or your calibrated fingers are off! Later.

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1I have a '97 8 hp Evinrude that has a plastic carb body and it seems to leak air around the butterfly shaft.
      Any way to resolve this? A lot of the parts are unavailable due to it's age.

      @@jimjordon9841 Hey. You could try to richen up the air/fuel mixture on the slow speed adjusting screw to compensate for the extra air its pulling in. That might help. Try ebay for parts too! Rebuild kit cheap!

      @jimjordon9841 you can drill out the shaft holes and put bushings in there. I caution you on doing this because it is a very delicate process. Also I do not recommend doing this with a hand drill because shaft alignment is critical. Once you have the holes drilled, a dab of locktite on the outside of the bushings will hold them in.
      Old automotive trick.
      God bless.

    Hey TOO- Enjoy the vids! Quick Q: Generally speaking- Can a slighty "sticky" mag plate {when you turn the throttle and plate doesn't qiute reach the end of it"s reach at WOT can this cause an overheating issue in these older outboards {new thermostat- and it does blubber water good} 1973 J/25hp - Thanks

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey. I don't think so. Sounds like the water isn't circulating through the power head or circulating to slow. Pull the thermostat out and run it without the thermostat cover and let it flush out for a minute or so. It should come out at a pretty good heavy flow. If it's slow there may be a clog somewhere, or the upper water tube grommet is swelled up bad, or a weak water pump impeller or blocked passageways. Thanks for tuning !
