    I about cried after watching your video. Just bought a 01 150hp evinrude thats been sittn since 05. Got 30 hours on it. I cleaned the boat, turned the flywheel by hand. Put a batt in it and with the fuel disconnected, i turned over the engine not realizing the rings could be seized up. Praying i didnt do damage! Great video! Wish i watched it sooner😢

      Hopefully you will be fine, if the flywheel turned freely without binding you should be fine. Just be gentle for a little while. Good luck 👍

    3 weeks ago, a 1972 Ebbtide Lakemaster 15' Open Bow "Ski Boat", 1972 Mercury 500e OB and EZ Loader Trailer followed me HOME. This is my First Boat, and I am a 72 yo Auto (AMC/JEEP/RENAULT) & Motorcycle (H-D/Kawasaki/Honda) Dealship Mechanic, GM & finally Owner. I have saved 1,000's a Cars/Trucks, Heavy Trucks and Motorcycles from Harley M50 to Kawasaki KZ1300 Six Turbo. My Brother Austin has had dozens of Boats, but I was never Blessed with one, no time I guess. Now that I have been Retired since June 2009, and called out of Retirement in 2017 by a Friend in the Hotel/Motel Business to be GM of a Texas Motel Chain. I get bored just working 100 hours a week in this business, so I have rehabbed 6 Cars/PU's and 4 Motorcycles that were in the Scrap Yard. I kind of like the Boat deal! This one was sitting for just under 30 years in a Garage. I am following your instructions, even though it is very similar to JetSki engines.

    I recently picked up a 10 ft Livingston that has a 1981 9.9 Evinrude. It hasn't been used for 14 years and was stored outside under tarps. Before I attempted to start it, I removed the plugs and sprayed penetrating oil into the cylinders. The next day, I slowly turned the flywheel. It turned freely, and I didn't feel any grinding sensation or sticking. Before I tested the compression, I turned it over by hand some and oiled the cylinders again. It has 90-92 psi in each cylinder, so I tried starting it. It didn't start. I've determined that the fuel pump is bad, and it's got a cork float in the carburetor. The float doesn't float anymore, so now it's a sink.😂 I ordered a Carburetor rebuild kit that comes with a plastic float and a fuel pump rebuild kit.Right now, I have the carburetor soaking in white gas camping fuel. I would've liked to use the big can of Berryman's, but evidently, we can't buy that here in the big metal can anymore. I'm hoping to have it running in a few days. I also cleaned up all the ground wires and applied dielectric grease. Spark is strong. After I get it up and running, I'll replace the water pump and thermostat. That looks pretty easy except for the lower bolt on the thermostat housing/plate. Idk how that's gonna come out. There's gotta be a trick that I'm not aware of? Otherwise, it looks like the whole power head has to come off,just to replace the thermostat. Does it have to come off?

    I think also your water pump in your lower unit should be replaced that would be another good thing to do because you just never know if it's dried out and it might have already damage the rubber impeller by turning it over with no lubricant it could have been froze up I think I'd replace that just to play it safe to

    A guy gave me a 1978 Evinrude 35hp. He said it ran great, but the top crank seal was leaking and fouled out the electronics once running. He said he was told that it had a split block and the block had to be taken apart to replace the seal. I thought that was nonsense, but I took the motor to see what I could do with it. It had been sitting up about 7 years. It didn't appear to be seized. I put some motor oil in the two cylinders and spun it around by hand a few days periodically. I felt with my finger some compression coming from both cylinders, but it seemed weak. I dug the old seal out with a screwdriver being careful not to scratch the crankshaft and tapped in a new one. I borrowed a compression tester from AutoZone. Both cylinders showed about 32 to 35 lbs. So, do you think once this motor is running the rings will reseat so I get higher compression, or do you think this motor is shot? I knew this guy well so I doubt he would have told me that it ran great if it didn't. I know it will not run great on 35 pounds of compression.

    • @zedcartwright5267
      @zedcartwright5267 ปีที่แล้ว

      excuse me. I put outboard motor oil in the cylinders. I figured over time it would drain down through the rings and a lubricate the bearings as well.

    When you fire up and run a uninown engine always mix the oil in the gas at 50:1. Even if its oil injection. It lets you verify the oil injection is working and extra oul isnt going to hurt anything, but no oil will mess things up in a hurry.

    1, you now have demolished the impeller. Always put water on the tail end before tuning the engine.

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It probably won’t do much good but you never know. If it’s just a stuck ring it might. Most times if it’s truly locked up the rust has eat into the cylinder enough that it will need to be honed to get a good life out of it.

    DON'T turn that bloody propeller backwards, if that motor was really sitting for that long you WILL damage the water pump impeller. Use the correct sized socket and Tee handle on the flywheel nut, if you must do this.

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sounds like the seals may be worn. They usually grip the prop shaft just enough to create drag. I’d check the lower unit oil level. If the levels are good it’s nothing to worry about. Just keep an eye on it. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment

      Thanks for the kind words. Best thing to do is compression check. And open the lower drain plug in the lower unit. If compression is good and equal.and the lower unit isn’t full of water and locked up it’s probably a good motor or at least a good motor to put money in.
      Again thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it

    Can you spray it with carb cleaner?

    • @bowl830
      @bowl830  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carb cleaner is ok for just cleaning a surface. It dries so quickly it don’t break it down. A good penetrating oil soaks in breaks down the rust and carbon. Sea foam is about the best I’ve used but WD40 does a great job as well. I appreciate you watching and commenting thank you

    • @bowl830

      @@4jaimeavalos yea I’d drain the fuel best I could before trying to run. Change filters and fog cylinders with something to make sure it’s not rusted to bad. While plugs were out I’d rock the flywheel side to to side by hand. If it turns free. Then use starter to just turn it and fog again.
      Once I knew the motor was good I’d do a full service. Top to bottom and start new. Good luck
