My family lost our Westie after a very long life. The last several years she was totally blind and deaf. She was surprisingly very adept at finding her way around the house that we moved to after she was deaf and blind. I’m 50+ and I have had 10 dogs the westie was without a doubt the most fun, the smartest, cutest, lived the longest AND cost the most $2000 euro I paid while stationed in Italy. I’m rambling I miss her and I think you did the right thing and I think you will not regret it. Congrats.
We had a blind Westie and he had no problem with stairs. I could take him to a new home and he never once ran into furniture. No one could tell MacLeod was blind. Winston will do just fine. After MacLeod we adopted another blind dog that had been fostered for 2 years after being rescued. We just adopted a 13 year old Carin that can see. On our walks he can see squirrels. We never had to deal with that before. All in all blind dogs have very little problems. You just have to be his seeing eye human on walks outside. Now dealing with a Westie puppy energy and feisty attitude....Good Luck...🤣🤣🤣 Westies are such little bundles of joy.
We had a family dog that was blind in one eye, and he adapted to life so well. The funny part of it was when I moved out and got my own dog who was 10 years younger, she couldn't keep up with him with being a perfectly normal dog. My experience with animals that get labeled disabled is that they tend to excel beyond others in various ways. Between Pudge and Winston, we are going to get seriously distracted with their adorableness.
Our Chow became blind at age 9 (sudden cataracts). When she needed to rush to get to the door to greet someone, she had a path where she brushed a few pieces of furniture on the way until she stepped on the tile of the foyer. Then a 90 degree to the left and a wag of the tail.
I have a dachapoo who went blind as a puppy. She does fine. Occasionally she runs into things. We are blind proofed in the house and yard. Nothing she can hurt herself on. She bumps into my legs a lot., coming in and out of house. Very happy dog!
Winston is wonderful. You and Marion are magnificent. Special needs animals are not uncommon, but people who make them part of their household are uncommon. Thank you for being special people.
His other senses will only adapt if they are stimulated. This goes for people too. But dofs adapt much easier than us. My best friend had a blind beagle and one wouldn't say she was blind. I'm a vet and congrats on the new family member.
I had a blind Shi Tzu many years ago. Our first clue that she was blind was she walked around a basket that wasn't there anymore. We had a basket of odds and ends right by the door and she would walk around it to get to her food. One day we found a better place to keep odds and ends and she was still walking around the spot where the basket had been. The vet found scratches on her eyes, he thought she might have walked into a stick, but my mother suspected some neighborhood bullies did it as she had found them tormenting the dogs before. Whatever caused the blindness she had no trouble adapting to life and lived many more years.
So touched that you adopted this adorable baby. You clearly care about our non human cousins. 💚💙 🧡 Please watch Dominion. I love animals too and never knew exactly what I was paying for. Some people just don't care but we need more people with a big heart like you to watch this. 🤗
Bless his little soul! There is nothing wrong with adopting a dog that has a disability. In my eyes they are all perfect and thank you for doing this for him because he deserves it 🥰
Winston is a cutie. You might want to consider taking him to the veterinary school to one let the baby docs (students) see it and two see if the canine ophthalmologist might be able to slow progression and keep him as pain free for as long as possible.

I lost my Westie, Luigi, 3 days ago. He was 16 years, 3 months, deaf and blind. He died in my son's arms, peacefully. I am sitting here at 1am watching this with tears of joy and happiness. I am so happy you adopted this wonderful, wonderful little doggie. The Westie breed is a special breed. They will immediately win you over with their love, loyalty and devotion. I was cracking up when you said you grew up with Bull Mastiff's. Just wait. You may have now finally met your match with this little Westie! Enjoy this beautiful little man, God Bless you! Maria I'm so sorry for your loss. I cant imagine how horrible life would be without my westie baby. She is 7 and bringing her into our family was like finding the missing piece of a puzzle. I miss my Westie and Winston is absolutely adorable. They are really good with children, and have an awesome temperament. The only problem I've experienced is that some Westies get allergies to some types of grass. I love the fact their love is unconditional and provide security and their devotion is unmatched . Congratulations !
Awww what a cutie!! I used to say that about my Gabby, its about that beautiful shnoz. She was a Pomeranian/Border Collie. Most gorgeous pupper ever!! Siiiiighhhh she passed back in 2019... I used to drive her crazy kissing her nosey that she'd end up licking me back til i got sick of it. Which was rather quickly. haha ahhh good times.
Give that beautiful pooch a big hug from our family!!! Our neighbors pup looks alot like Winston so my 3 year old son is awfully confused but always in love haha!!
Love you guys for your big hearts towards animals. We had two dogs that lost their sight and they do amazingly well, even going down stairs. As long as furnishings aren't moved, that causes them problems.
So Glad you are feeding him RAW, I had two Westies, Murray, my 2nd lived 16 1/2 years old. Went deaf and blind the last 2 years of his life. I babied him every chance I had left with him.

My mini schnauzer went blind at 7 years old, and she lived until she was 15, she did everything, up and down stairs, walks, and everything she did before.
OMG I love Winston. You are amazing kind people and Winston is a lucky dog. We have a 14 year old Beagle who has been blind for about 3 years now and he totally gets around with his nose. They do amazingly well actually. I want a Westie now....so cute!!
We had an older dog go blind- you might find it helpful that there is a vest contraption available that has a plastic loop that connects on either side of the vest. When the dog walks near a wall, it'll hit the plastic loop first and put pressure on the vest- keeping the dog from running into the walls. Helpful for dogs struggling to adjust well
I had a 18 year old Westie that went blind and deaf. She did get a little aggressive so yip might have to give her some meds to help with that. God bless you and little that little Westie!

Depending on how your house is configured one or more ramps might be useful to allow Winston to navigate stairs more easily once he's lost his sight. After discovering my Cairn Terrier 'Bruce' was going blind when I noticed he'd become afraid of going down stairs into our back yard I built him a ramp with a gentle slope he could use without fear of falling. While he didn't get to use it a whole lot before passing away another of our dogs who had a bad back that made navigating stairs very difficult got lots of use out of it. As part of my research to help Bruce with his fading eyesight I learned that there are wearable sonar devices available for dogs that warn them of obstacles via audible cues so that they can walk off leash without running into things. They're not cheap though.
