The more I discover her music... the more upset and angry I get.. No way ..she was gone so young.. Wonderful voice and personality.. RIP Mama Cass... Hard to believe!!
Agreed. I discovered mamas and papas very young but understood quickly, she was the soul force they had. Sad to learn she was often thrown to the back burner pre and post.. It’s obvious the world didn’t deserve her. I hope she knew/knows, that she’s a legend.
It makes me so sad to know how much the words that were said about her hurt her deep down, as a plus sized girl I know exactly how it feels, if she didn’t starve herself so much I feel like she may have had more time on this earth. ED are so dangerous, and they’re not taken seriously enough especially back then. She was seriously so beautiful, literally an angel. 🥺
Her voice is just singular. It’s one of the most recognizable ever. I think one of the best things about it is how well her voice blends with other voices. The Mamas and Papas would have sounded super generic without her. But with her, they were extraordinary. There’s a video of her singing with Joni Mitchell and Mary Travers too. Just magical stuff. Sad those 3 didn’t do an album.
My God, what a heavenly voice. And she is also a warm friendly person. She introduced Graham Nash to Stephen Stills and Crosby. A supergroep was born: CSN (and later Young). Sadly she died too young. We miss you Cass!
Someone needs to talk about the talent of the backing vocalists who KILLED this! So good! Their harmonies with Cass madeeeeee this performance, of course ontop of Cass’ unequivocally good performance.
One of the background singers is Edna Wright.. She became Famous a few years later with her group The Honey Comb.. The had a Hit in the 70s called the Want Ads
I hope someone can redo this w/ just Cass singing would be so good, with no background singing, just Cass . Such a lovely lady, Cass you rest in peace, you sure were the entertainer & singer, you blazed a trail.
It's October 16, 2021 here today; tomorrow this video's upload date will be exactly ten years old. Just something I noticed upon clicking on a random video to watch...
great voice, sisters sound good.. songs are way off. Cass brought magic with the background harmonies which were actually more important than the lead vox. Mamas & Papas were nothing amazing broken down individually, but the chemistry of the four together was unbeatable.
After her death.... Phillips tried to 'fill her spot" he stopped adding voices when THREE COULDN'T COME CLOSE. He was SUCH an asshole. The curse of every great contralto.... the men hate us... the women wait.
She was one of the great voices of her era but she is not doing well here. Her voice is thin, she misses notes, can't hold notes and I am pretty sure she messed up a lyric on Monday, Monday. I enjoyed the performance for its historical context but she wouldn't have been invited back, singing like that, in a local club.
FrankMahovlich To be fair, she did not sing the lead part on these songs, and is actually singing her old harmony part on Monday Monday. It doesn't work because she is not comfortable with the lead on that song. When she was doing her solo work, she was perfect.
The more I discover her music... the more upset and angry I get.. No way ..she was gone so young.. Wonderful voice and personality.. RIP Mama Cass... Hard to believe!!
Totally agreed Mr. Christian Oliver....peace

I feel the same...muy triste por temprana partida ..
The 'Adele' of her time..beautiful soul, beautiful voice..simply ...beautiful human.
Adele who??
No - Adele is the Cass Elliott of our time.
@@julzy07 I don't really know why people compare the two. Apart from the weight thing, they couldn't be more different.
@@julzy07 there isn't a Mama Cass of our time ;). And there probably won't be again. Truly a unique being.
To be honest, a far better talent than Adele.
It makes me so sad to know how much the words that were said about her hurt her deep down, as a plus sized girl I know exactly how it feels, if she didn’t starve herself so much I feel like she may have had more time on this earth. She was also hurt Denny rejected her, I heard the sandwich rumor was a cover for rumored drug overdose. Who knows. I did her heart just gave out. Sad.
No auto-tune; I'd love to see vocalists from this era try and cut this stuff live.
The way Cass sings California Dreamin is perfection! I love the way she sings “knee”
Mama Cass you still rock! We should of taken better care of you here in England
What a voice. No one today even comes close to Cass.
George Vreeland Hill that’s because NO ONE can SING now! What a pity 😭

Love this!! The background is Edna Wright(far left) and Honeycone, I think thats Clydie King too. Loved Cass voice!
C Flow yes, Clydie's on the right
And Carolyn Willis
Another great singer that was gone from us much too soon! She had an amazing voice, and always put her heart into whatever she sang.
She did have a great voice. Love listening to her sing. But gone to soon? Used a lot of drugs. Shortened her life
Someone needs to talk about the talent of the backing vocalists who KILLED this! So good! Their harmonies with Cass madeeeeee this performance, of course ontop of Cass’ unequivocally good performance.
For me, Cass is a nicer, richer and warmer voice and she's a much more interesting woman than Adele.
Love how she sweeps onto the stage.
God, Cass was so incredible! What depth to that voice! ♡
Superb hauntingly beautiful voice. Gone too soon.
Mamma Cass beautiful voice! I'm from México and I'm still listening!
Honey Cone! Backup singers....awesome! Edna Wright is the best!!! Love Cass of course too!!!
The Blackberries, right? That's definitely Clydie King on the far right, and Shirley Matthews in the center. ???
she´s perfect! i love her
I love the way she sings ‘California’ makes me want to go but for now only in dreams
I would have been just fine with her solo up there. Her voice was silk.
I just discovered Mama Cass. She was a QUEEN! I'm an fan
The backup singers are Edna Wright and Carolyn Willis (of Honey Cone) with Clydie King
Her voice is so strong and steady.
1:00
Mama Cass... "I pretend to pray"
Singers... "I began to pray"
:P
too blasphemous for those three ladies lol
1:50
I think she was supposed to say "monday morning" instead of "monday monday?"
Either ways, Lovely.
Mandela effect?
Mama Cass and backing singers later to come become the girl group “The Honey Cone”
What a voice! So rich, full and clear. Age what a joyous presence. She made everything she touched better. What a tragedy you left us so soon, Cass.
Cass has a great voice but why we are talks about backing vocals ??🔥

Thanks Ellen Cohen... yes, that's her real name. A perfect pop music voice.
I ADORE THIS! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! (I just wonder how much $$$$$ John Phillips charged her to sing these songs in which SHE is most recognized)
R.I.P Edna Wright and Clydie King
This brought tears toy eyes... Love you Cass Elliot you were amazing !!! :-) XO
Cass was the superstar in the supergroup T M A T P! ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS OF THE ROCK ERA 🎤🎤🎤🎤💜💜💜💜

AmyWinooo I'll remind that all the leaves are Brown and the sky is gray

Mason Dash Garcia that’s who she WAS called... sorry but we knew her when!
unbelievable!!!
Jim Gordon on drums...
Beautiful singer, beautiful person
Cass Elliot was an incredible singer who never got to achieve her potential. This is a terrific clip with Honey Cone providing the backing vocals.
That was a lack luster performance when you consider how great she could sing
Love her talent too but I agree, not her A game that day.
bellísimas canciones en una gran voz
I feel like I’m the only person in the world who thought she was truly beautiful I wish I’d known her in person.
Cass could really belt. And I think two of the backup singers are Clydie King and Venetta Fields.
as great as voice is, by herself she cannot create that Mamas & Papas magic
They are nothing without Cass
One of the background singers is Edna Wright.. She became Famous a few years later with her group The Honey Comb.. The had a Hit in the 70s called the Want Ads
I LOVE YOU!!

After her death.... Phillips tried to 'fill her spot" he stopped adding voices when THREE COULDN'T COME CLOSE. He was SUCH an asshole.

"not doing well here," is an understatement. The lot of them sound Horrible.
very good
These songs are classic! Mama Cass had her own vibe!
Miss her!
She was so beautiful , that nice dress is for her, why she doesnt use that kind of dress before whith mamas an the papas
Excuse me, but where are the other Mamas & Papas?
The group by this time had disbanded.
