  • I did a simple melt today using shredded hard drives.
    I 3D printed some standard looking bar shapes and used petrobond sand to cast them.
    It was a quick melt but a fun one.
    I hope you enjoy watching this one as much as I did making it!

    I figured those would melt fast. I do not melt stuff but I can see that there is going to be lots of slag. Then the shiny shiny melted stuff !! They came out great !! I like it when they are mirrored. Maybe next time ? Great vid, thanks for sharing !!

    I love the medium you chose. So different than what we usually see. That is one reason that I love your channel. You know what? I think this was an amalgam. Pure aluminum usually shrinks more. So that's pretty cool. I wonder what the mix is? Very interesting! P.S. I hope you and your family are doing well 🙏🏻!

    Nice. Very little shrinkage, must be a special alloy.
    I find the disks are too pretty to melt and want to use mine for a wind chime.

    When you're melting these down what happens to the plastic components of these things? Like aluminum cans have a plastic lining on the inside to prevent the aluminum from leeching into the beverage.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I try to make sure I get only pieces that are plastic free to melt. The plastic liners on cans just burns off. 👍

    The whole steam explosion from molds thing is overhyped.
    That's not to say that it isn't a good idea to preheat the molds, especially graphite, as a cold metal mold can cause uneven cooling and imperfections in the bar while a cold graphite mold could crack, but unless you're keeping the molds somewhere that there's a humidity problem or leaving them outside in the elements, you really shouldn't have any honest risk of a steam explosion.
    The reality is that you're more likely to get a steam explosion from moisture in your casting sand.

    • @TheGrowingStack
      @TheGrowingStack  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It is a little bit, but I always say that to encourage people who might try it to burn any moisture off in case they don’t know. I’ve poured many times without preheating and have been fine, but it’s that one time you don’t that might have something go sideways.
      Great comment!
