I was literally just having a "real world physics" conversation with my buddy about how a proton pack could really work by canon design. I can't wait to show him this. This is the coolest attempt at explaining the proton pack I have ever seen. Great work!
The nerdiness of all this is why I fell in love with Ghostbusters lore. A bunch of scientists booted out of their university work and called quacks. Then they come up with all these tools and start a short lived enterprise of capturing ghosts. I loved it. Even Afterlife was nerdy enough for me.
This channel is great for us super fans. Also, props to Dan Akroyd, Reitman, Ramis and everyone involved. Absolutely one of the best movies ever put to film..
I swear I love the detail put into these videos. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis didn't just "science fiction magic" this crap. There was an actual science built around this franchise. Always loved the Proton Pack.
I can see the proton pack can actually be made into reality, but in a much larger scale first before scaling it down to back pack size. From bricksize carphones to smartphones, it's definitely possible. Great video.
It's a stupid theory, I know, but what if the C.E.R.N. hadron-collider is secretly a experiment to find out, if it is possible to capture ghosts? Your scale idea makes absolutely sense. Think about how big home-gaming-consoles were and how smaller they became all over the years, even decades after the systems first hit store-shells? The same thing happened to personal computers.
As a child I knew little of science, but I always wondered why Protons ? Because there had to be a reason. Listening to this even as highly theoretical science is actually mind-blowing to think about how much observation, contemplation, and consideration went into the pseudo science of this film. As a life long fan of GB, I give you my HIGHEST thanks and appreciation for making this awesome video 🔥👍🏽
This is brilliant!! If ramis was still alive I’m sure he would work on a real proton pack, he was not only an actor but also a science whiz. I’ve just subscribed
I can just watch these tech/science breakdown vids all day. This series of vids is wonderful. It's also wonderful that they thought about some of this kind of science when it came to the writing the nuances of the props into the movies. It shows a certain dedication you don't see in many movies before or since then. But I get it since mysteries of the supernatural/unknown is very much Dan's bag.
Once it got to the part about what parts of the proton pack do what, i was completely enthralled because as a kid it was basically: somehow nuclear power happens and the energy created produces a pretty plasma stream that traps ghost. Great video.
The design of the stream is fantastic, especially in GB1 with the 2-way channel concept they used (then subsequently abandoned in GB2). Besides the orange/blue look, the only unusual detail of the stream that is easily visible is that the stream's whipping motion appeared to be originating from the far end rather than from the thrower. You'd have to pause/slowmo the scenes to see all of the other incredible details they put into it: 1. the visible orange stream originates from the far end, not the thrower (which explains the whipping motion detail). 2 the static electric field is emitted only upon the orange stream connecting with the thrower (prompting the burst of energy at the thrower's tip). 3. purple/mauve darts shoot back through the stream from the far end to the thrower, but only after the static electric field reaches the far end ("confinement stream" from Egon in ballroom scene). It must have been a blast designing things that next to no one would ever notice, or care to notice (yes I cared too much).
I respect how much thought and organization went into conceptualizing a movie back in the 80s. It seems like most movies today are written as they go. Ghostbusters was a perfect film, it was was well written, had a tight script, great character arc, etc..
I am struggling to find the words to describe how impressive these videos are and glad that someone did the research and work to define the lore and technology of the franchise so clearly. My inner child looks up to you guys with thankful delight. Very well done.
Amazing work... i couldn't imagine there was so much research behind it and i deeply thought they basically just randomly put cool stuff together to make it looks amazing. thanks a lot !
this was a very well thought out and described video. A primer of the workings of a proton pack. One thing I'd like to offer is, the Neutrona Wand tip apparently has some kind of twist control for the leading (front) mounted hand, I was told this controls the "wobble" the beam can have, which is why in some scenes, the beam is very straight, while in others, twists left or right or even seems to have a curve to it. From what I was told this is so when you have a ghost entangled and the ghost is fighting the beam, you can give it some slack so as not to lose it. The analogy I was told is that capturing a ghost is like fishing, your firm in some moments, then slack in others, this in turn allows the ghost to tire itself out and thus to weak to resist when trying to get it into the trap. Hence Ray's advice of _"Zap 'em, Cap 'em and Trap 'em"_ , meaning to weaken the ghost, zap them of there energy, entangle them in the beam like a rope, cap them, and then put them in position to get sucked in by the trap's proton field, trap them.
Thats good. Im just going to add that the trap (meuon trap) doesn't have a proton field, but does use electro magnets with alternative currents to keep the negative PKE make up of the ghost inside.
thats why i loved GB, they were paranormal pest control, just another day at the office for them. the pay was lousy, the hours were long and it was a funny take on public service jobs.

I love your explanation of the proton packs operation I always theorized that the proton pack was a dual plasmatron that just took hydrogen gas & converted it to protons like the process in the large Hadron collider my theory was using the animated proton pack the red part was the power cell using tritium connected to the accentuator the yellow round part would be the tank of hydrogen gas & the middle top part with the gauge would be the pump that pumps hydrogen gas via the metal hose to the dual plasmatron which is the round part of the pack then from there the hydrogen is made into protons & like the ionization chamber/ ion source of particle accelerators the plasma is forced through the hose into the wand the wand has electromagnets that accelerates the proton plasma out of the wand.
