Ahh I always had this explanation as my head canon since I was a kid. The proton stream bonded with the negative particles of a ghost making it sort of a 'lasso beam' to wrangle ghosts into the ring of a trap.

You know I'd bet that somebody in the field of Quantum mechanics or Quantum physics and knows how to build a small cyclotron can follow this video an make a real live working proton pack not forgetting to have warning labels and instructions on how to use the packs properly. I'm sure some genius will create it. Someday. A fan can only dream.
@Code_Works actually, it's not as impossible as you might think. It is technically possible to create a small particle accelerator. In theory however creating a small nuclear accelerator does have its pros and cons, like a pro is its easier to maintain, a con is it could easily overheat and potentially melt.
If Egon created all the Ghostbusters tech on that kind of budget, imagine if he actually got decent backing like Stark Industries or the S.C.P. Foundation.

I thought the switch under the intensify button is the activate switch that activates the vent light? And a lever is used to remove the safe on the barrel to allow the user to fire the neutrona wand as shown in Ghostbusters afterlife?
Walter Peck cared more about decommissioning the containment unit when, he really should have been extraordinarily concerned about those proton pack fuel rods.
Just for editing cleanup, you mention the fuel isotope used in the begining of the video is Carbon-14 but when you talk about the rods from Dr Brown @1:39, you call it Cobalt-14.
Excellent schematics since I remember having had a red headed professor who wanted to have me build a laser directed energy particle beam weapon so I explained to him how continous wave would require a back pack even if he claimed to have access to a neutron generator source. I remember he resembled Snowden so he said he would "go to Australia to mine opals if a Democrat was elected" and offered other wild conspiracy theories about Princeton University having created portals in the vacuum of space to go beyond our universe.
