Ah no problem pal good luck with it make sure the measuring tools are good quality 👍 And when you torque the cam retainer down it will close the shim gap slightly
It is because the valves start to wear into the seats becoming closer to the cams only small tolerances.... So this pushes the valve buckets towards the cam lobes... So you need to remove the bucket and fit a thinner shim to make the gap wider.... If the gap is tight then the valve will either stay open or open before top dead center resulting in compression loss.... If your bike is hard to start and runs like crap but better when it is hot then this can mean you need valves adjusting as when the engine heats up everything expands including the gap in the cam lobes and shrinks when it's cool

It will be a carb model yours so that could be valve clearances or pilot jetting too lean... When you warm the bike up let it idle and give it a burst of throttle if it boggs down before it revs up then your pilot air fuel mixture is too lean this will cause hard starting also... But the valve clearances should be checked also
No problem ...GO for the least intense stuff first even a too low idle stop adjustment can cause hard starting ...and the problem with carbs is that after time the mixture screws can vibrate out of sync which is worth looking at even TPS sensors etc first
My bike runs really bad at first start but after it’s warm it run good do I need to do this? I’ve only ever worked with car motors interference and non-interference. also mileage is 23k I doubt the previous owner had it done. Also it’s 96 with 98 swap so it’s injected.
For cold starts it can be a number of things like the vacuum solenoids crank sensor air temp sensor or cold start lever needs adjusting... But Yes even valve clearances will effect this massively...

Ola tenho uma dessa 98. Ta ruim de partida a frio e marcha lenta instavel desliga do nada. acho q tem valvula pressa.
Don’t sand them down. The shims are case hardened. If you damage that hardened surface, the shim will wear out quickly.
