    Nice job as always, Rich. All the electronics on our new to us Tayana 37 are 15+ years old, so these tech videos of yours are especially helpful as we get ready to update everything. We were out of the sailing business for 11 years while we raised our kid and paid for her education, so I am struggling to catch up with the ins and outs of modern navigational, weather, and communications technology. Your videos are light years ahead of the pop sailing channels that spend more time on bikinis than bilge pumps.

      Thank you so much Dayton, we appreciate the great feedback. We're still keeping the old Ray C70 plotter and analogue radar that came with the boat, but when it comes to modern navigation and systems monitoring for shorthanded sailing I just don't think you can beat the hand-held "smart" device. I'm so convinced of that, we converted our paper chart locker forward of the Nav Station knee-space into a slide-out pantry for canned goods.
      As for the bikini clips, Jeni is still trying to convince me to wear a Speedo the next time I change the oil. I think it's a bad idea.....

    I love our Vesper AIS. Great signal with the tuned VHF antenna and splitter. Anyway good to see you Rich. Hopefully we'll run into guys again.

      Hey Steve, what's happening man? You guys make it back up to Mendo?
      Thanks for watching. I love this little gadget. It does a whole lot of everything in a very small package. It integrates so seamlessly with the rest of our electronics.
      We'll be around for a little while longer, so hell yeah, hope to run into you both real soon. Stay in touch, and Merry Christmas!!

    Your descriptions are always enlightening. Now all I have to do is go to "Radio Tech" school to understand what it all means. ;8>)

    Once again Great Job Rich and Jeni......We use Navionics on the chart plotter (Vector charts), and ISailor on the IPAD for (Raster) charters. That way we are getting two types of charts. I also installed the Digital Yacht Navlink 2, which takes your NMEA data and puts that information onto the IPAD or your phone.

      Thanks Ohana. I love how everything integrates and communicates through NMEA and WiFi so easily.

    Nice, clean, install with the Vesper. The anchor alarm feature is useful.

      Thanks Brandon, the Anchor Watch feature was a big selling point. We sleep well when the wind and/or currents shift in the middle of the night.

    You can hook up your Vesper splitter to your AM/FM radio as well for better reception.

      Nooooo, Jeni make it look easy. She takes 12 hour of install footage and trims it down to 12 minutes of concise information. She also edits out all the curse words.... Thanks again for watching!!

    First thing I did when I bought my boat! Literally got on board and installed the Vesper Marine Vision 2 unit and that same splitter. I also replaced the tape deck so I could have tunes for the trip. I've really loved the Vesper Marine unit and its made navigating with an iPad pretty dang nice. That VHF splitter is a great unit. Also you can even share your VHF antenna into your FM radio. I find on weak stations you lose your radio when you transmit but I get a lot better reception with it.... I will say it was really great having the big barges know we were there. I also really wanted to the Anchor alarm. If you're interested to try a nice map app check out AquaMap. Those guys make a pretty dang nice product. Its made by a few guys out of Italy.

      Thanks, were running iNav X and love how well the Vesper interfaces with all our devices. My favorite feature is the anchor-drag alarm next to my pillow up in the vee-berth, and also in the main salon.

    Hey Rich, i've had a quick look at the device on Vesper's site and seeing as you already have a wireless router in the nav station there, you can actually configure the Vesper AIS to be a client of that network rather than its own AP, that was you can access it from within your normal network, which would likely be more convenient as it means you dont need to be disconnected from your normal network to talk to the AIS.
    Hopefully thats a useful bit of information for you to make life a bit easier.

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, thanks for the tip, and thanks for checking us out.
      One of the things I've been planning to do is integrate our WiFi internet router into the Vesper system. I noticed that it's a hassle switching back and forth in "Settings" on the iDevices, and I plan to pick up a newer boat router.
      Thanks again.

    You likely won’t be happy with the splitter.
    For the cost of the splitter you could’ve installed a rail mounted ais antenna.
    I may be wrong. But, not likely

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We like it just fine so far. Interested to hear your reasoning against the splitter.

    • @mikejmardis
      @mikejmardis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@svrambleon you likely haven’t done any test on distance or missed transmit/receive with a splitter. The incidence is likely limited. But, when it counts it counts. Not to mention the lack of backup.
      I guess, in the end, it doesn’t matter until it matters. only then are we thankful…… Kinda like that drogue, life raft, and even spinnaker, we carry all over the waters and never being used.

      @svrambleon  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mike - Thanks for expanding on your comment. You're right, we haven't done any tests on distance so it will be interesting to see how it goes. We have been thinking about a backup as well. Just haven't gotten to it yet. Thanks for watching. We appreciate the input.

    So if your vhf is off, your ais if off too.?? Not a wise decision. What if your boat is stolen..? I use Inavx too. Love it.

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure I get the correlation between AIS and boat theft. The Vesper AIS system isn't LoJack or Find My iPhone, but I recall reading about something like that on some Internet forum.
      The way I gang electronics on circuit breakers has do do with priority, and each device comes off a separately fused terminal block behind the main panel based on manufacturers' specs.
      If I was inclined to steal a sailboat the first thing I would do is rip out all the electronics. Thusly, no more AIS signal being transmitted...
      Don't say anything, but in a future video I'm going to show where we installed our super secret anti theft sailboat diesel ignition kill switch.
      Just kidding, but food for thought, right?
      Thanks again for watching Georges, we enjoy the feedback.

      SV Ramble On what I did was wire my AIS permanently on hidden away in a cupboard so that if they do open up the nav table panel, they won’t realize it has AIS (hopefully). And again, hopefully, the potential thief is not a sailor. If the don’t realize I have AIS, you can track your own boat in any AIS app/web. Thanks guys and good luck with your anti theft device.

      Hey Ruff Riders, The best price I found online was from imarineusa.com , and I got everything as a package deal. Also, they had pretty much the best price on the antenna, but I always take into consideration shipping costs. iMarine is out here on the west coast in California, so shipping is usually faster and cheaper for us than Defender in some cases. Not always, but we usually take that into consideration depending on how badly we need new/replacement parts. Thanks again for watching.

      @@svrambleon Thanks. I got the Vesper AIS and put it in, it works great. It worked with my existing antenna, but I bought a new one also. It cost to much to ship it back so I'll just put it on one day.

    Can you use bluetooth to connect to the Vesper? Very strange to connect via WiFi. I'd prefer to be connected to my boat's WiFi for internet connectivity on the device and use Bluetooth for accessories such as AIS data. Is that possible?

    • @svrambleon
      @svrambleon  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Vesper XB8000 uses WiFi, not Bluetooth.

    • @leontedev

      @@svrambleon So if you connect to this WiFi network using an iPad, you won't be able to join your Internet wifi hotspot at the same time, right? That seems really weird.

      This is the way the Garmin One Helm works as well. Not sure what the technical reason is for this but it looks to be a common practice.
