Hello! We are Jeni & Rich VanDusen, a couple of do-it-yourselfer liveaboards and future travelers. A few years ago we sold a bunch of stuff and bought an old (but sturdy) Tayana 37 sailboat. We've been living aboard since September 2013 all while doing MAJOR work on the boat and working full-time. Our goal is not to create the perfect boat, but to fix and upgrade our boat to suit us and what we want to do...which is travel! We're real hands-on type of people and Rich is seriously talented when it comes to fixing and making nearly anything, so most of our videos are about projects on which we're working. Future videos will be about sailing and travel, but for now, if you're looking for information on how to rewire your old boat, build a bowsprit, or even how to retrieve that halyard you lost up the mast, chances are we've done it!
Installing a SOLAR Arch for Off-Grid Living | SV Ramble On
We're back in Mexico! But we're not enjoying the serene desert beauty found in the Sea of Cortez. We're working our butts off in the Puerto Peñasco boatyard. Our first project is installing a solar arch. We had a pretty good idea that we needed more solar. We installed some small panels in Long Beach, but what we really needed was a place that wouldn't be shaded by the boom or the radar arch. Jeni was in favor of a solar arch way back before we left California. Rich thought it would make the boat look weird. Jeni didn't care, she wanted to charge the batteries without the engine or generator. Rich saw the [solar] light and walked toward it. So now we have to figure out a way to get the arch installed on the boat.

We’re Jeni and Rich. We’re really just a couple of average Joes. In a nutshell we met and married in our early 20s; I graduated from college in my late 20s; adopted two cats and a dog in the late 90s; sold a house and bought a new house in our mid 30s; then sold the new house and moved onto a sailboat in our early 40s. In between all that we had a bunch of fun like camping, scuba diving, watching hockey games (Go Red Wings!), concerts, traveling, spear fishing, restoring a 1963 Chevy II Nova; spending time with family and friends. A few years ago we decided to lay off all the fun-having to fix up this old boat. We figure if we put our noses to the grindstone for a few years, we’ll be able to travel for a few years and do all the fun things we’ve missed.

Hauling out for hurricane season is not what we had planned when we left back in October. But after this eight month shake-down cruise we discovered some things we want to add and subtract to and from the boat. We had a blast the last several weeks of our cruising season and didn't film a thing. I did take a few photos that I've included in the video though. We're still on the fence of continui...

What brand of pump is that you are using. Thanks
It’s a Carter I bought on Amazon but any 12 volt diesel fuel pump will work.
We have the same boat 1983. Do you remember what size tanks you installed?
The aft tank is around 42 gallons and the forward tank is around 35 gallons.
So now that you've had the stack pack for 5 years, how do you like it? I've got a traditional mail sail cover with lazy jacks. It's hard to pull down the cover and fasten it due to the lazy jacks. I'm thinking to either replace it with a traditional cover with slots to accommodate the lazy jacks or a stack pack. Never had a stack pack before. Not sure if windage and interference with wind flow matters for a non-racer when using a stack pack. Oh, also my cover now covers the front and sides of the mast with its on-mast winches and hanging lines. Looks like a stack pack would leave those exposed. Important or not?
Hi Rich - We really like the stack pack. It makes it so easy to put the mainsail away. It's true our does not cover the winches or the front of the mast, but it hasn't been a problem so far. We have a halyard bag on the front of the mast for the jib and spinnaker halyards. When our stack pack falls apart, Jeni will be sewing a new one just like it.
Fallon, NV Good memories onboard the base. 😊👍🏼
I was wondering for a while how to fit a solar arch on a canoe stern!! Looks great! I really want one but with a dingy and outboard lift and wind gen. I wonder if the rear legs could handle the sheer load, being attached to the outside.
Yes it will handle the shear load. Our has dinghy davits and an outboard lift (no wind gen though). We’ll do a video on the rest of the install soon.
@@svrambleon That's great to know! Thanks for the reply :) Looking forward to the next installment.
Great job with the arch!
Thanks, it was a lot of work but we're happy with how it turned out.
It is so good to see another boatwork video from Ramble On, I always come away with a thought or the beginning of a solution for a job on our boat. You may be interested in the stainless drawer slides from Sugatsune when it’s time to change out the ones you installed. They are reasonably priced, 304, and seem well made. I got mine from Outwater Industries.
Thanks for the tip, we'll definitely look into those!
That arch & solar does look great !! 😊
We were so stoked to get it installed!
That is very cool, can’t wait to see it loaded! Nice cushions, love the fabric. 😅
This is brilliant thank you very much. Super clear and exactly what we would like to do as we can not afford the 12K quoted to construct a solar arch on our yacht.
We’re glad it was helpful!
Great video guys. That arch is awesome
Thanks Norman! We’ve been enjoying your videos. I hope you guys continue on.
Great video, I always learn something new with you guys.. question was it more economical buying the arch compared to manufacturing yourself? I realize you can up your solar panels to have plenty of power but your radar will be moved to another location maybe on the mast?? Thanks for another great video..
I think it’s probably six of one, half dozen of the other. I think it was faster for us to buy the arch and bring it down to Mexico where we could do the work ourselves. I think we could have had it manufactured down here, but I’m not confident it would have looked as nice and clean as we wanted it to look. And finding skilled labor and supplies can be tricky down here. If we had been in the US and had our workshop we could have done it all ourselves.
@ so are you mounting the radar basically in the same spot and if so is there a major difference where to mount the radar.. I only ask this because “We” ie my wife Maria and I will be putting on our own solar arch and dingy Davit on the arch.. Our radar will have to be moved possibly onto the mast..
We moved the radar to the mast while in the yard. We didn't want it to throw shade on the solar panels.
question: was looking at buying a mantas anchor what do you have?
We have a Rocna Vulcan 25kg. We are also considering a Mantus M2 as a secondary anchor because they break down for storage.
I love your videos. I look forward to each one and even re-watching old ones
We really appreciate that!
Awesome. Are you taking orders?!!!
Worked for me also, thanks a million !!!
Glad it worked for you!
Thanks for great video. Can you please tell what is your nice boat model and size?
It’s a Tayana 37
Enjoy your time away, hoping you continue the content. You guys are good, good information and knowledgeable DYI.
Great video. I didn’t really realize how much you had to do to leave your boat. ❤❤❤❤
That was a good season. Haulout is a relief but sad as the season ends. I think it’s the big change to dirt world that shocks one’s routine. Germaine did you a solid fending the angle iron finger dock. My favorite part was that crazy blonde in the tie dye t-shirt. 😉Great video. See y’all down the road. @sv_solmate
Congrats on a great year. I enjoyed your pace. I subscribe to SV Basik and Linh can’t sit for more than 3 days before they have to move. Take some good video of Puerto Penab… thinking it would be a good expat move due to its proximity to the border.
Great looking installation. Of course there was an air gremlin in the line. This is a boat.
Quite an adventure with the rescue.... good on you guys. Makes me want to upgrade my medical emergency kit which is primarily whiskey and pain killers - kidding. I also jigged that anchorage, but in July and kept catching 4' foot sharks so I stopped. After analyzing tides and winds and..... to avoid a strong current on the nose going into San Fransquito... I still screwed up and had the bounciest 30 minutes of my 3 years in the SOC making the turn from south into the bay. I could not stand at the helm it was so bad. 20kts of wind against a 3 or 4 kt oppossing tide, what a shit show.
Oof, sounds terrible. The current in that area can be crazy for sure.
Are you still at Safe Marine? Tim on Coconut here (at Cabrales). Either way, it was nice to meet you and Jeni. . I just watched this video and want to ask - if you only use the foot switches and not the remote to raise and / or lower your anchor does the remote still count? I'll be rewiring my windlass to install a switch at the helm. I wonder if the Lofrans remote would count correctly, or at all, on a different mfg's windlass. Hmmm.
Hi Tim - it was nice meeting you too. We are in Gonzaga. We left Safe Marina as fast as we could. Regarding the Lofrans remote it does count even when we don’t use it. Seems like you could use it with a different mfgs windlass. Hope to see you out here soon!
Why didn’t you just leave the elbow on the riser and the exhaust hose wouldn’t need to bend?
Because it wouldn't fit that way.
Velcro? F’ing Velcro? Are you kidding me? 🤦♂️
Ummm...not sure what you're talking about. We didn't talk about Velcro in this video at all.
Me personally, while it might not be the best way to do it, is that after putting the sealant down and putting the other object against it, do not fully tighten for a short period of hours, depending on the type of product and conditions you’re using it in. Allowing the sealant to start curing so when you do put pressure on it by tightening, the caulk doesn’t completely squeeze out. In fact, making a gasket before you pull the whole thing together. Hopefully that makes sense.
Oh my gosh I'm still laughing hysterically at the "bat" in the fridge (which turned out to be a styrofoam ice chest squeaking on the fridge door.) Miss you guys! Lisa
🤣🤣
It was fun sharing your birthday 🎂 Pity about those abandoned houses, as you say.. why would someone just up and leave!! Aah Poor Lisa , and the bat ! 😂
Why is it a red tide

Are those places abandoned homes??
Yes I would 😂

I liked the video. I needed a Ramble on episode. Couple of things. Jennie isn’t getting in the hot tubs. To germaphobic and I wouldn’t blame her. At the end of the video where you showed everyone around. Would you 2 ever camp on the beach and leave the boat at anchor. I would if I were you. Just something different.
Nice fish man!
I've decided no fiber packing. What a brine mess. String? Human hair? It's still going to drip.
Nice Yellowtail!
Thanks!
Impressive catch!
Are those little sharks?
Yes, horn sharks
I’m glad you have Jen in the boat when you’re in the water. Good safety idea. You guys are doing it right. Heading down in a month on a cruise going thru the canal. What is your favorite town so far in Mexico.
We really liked Loreto, but didn't get to spend much time there. We spent the most time in Santa Rosalia and La Paz and liked them both. I think we're going to head through the canal after next season (late 2025).
@@svrambleon thx
Nice catch!
Thanks!
Great catch on the yellowtail! And whoa.. those rollers.. not so nice !!
The rollers were obnoxious for a few hours for sure. Seems there's always something bad to remind us how good it is the majority of the time.
Now that’s a hell of a fish!! Congratulations!! And thanks for the lesson on filleting a fish!! All the best Richard 🇬🇧👍
