  • Thank you everyone for your fantastic support! We are amazed everyday at how awesome the community forming around this channel is!!!
    We are giving away our AIS receiver to one of you. If you want our old AIS250 receiver, send us an e-mail at ryanandsophieonaboat@gmail.com and tell us about yourself and your boat! We will announce the lucky new owner of Polar Seal’s AIS in next week’s video. We are super looking forward to hear from you :)
    This week, our friends at Sopromar, the boat yard that helped us with all our issues and upgrades, gives us a tour of their massive operation. On our way from Stockholm, we’d been struggling to find good and well assorted boat stores. Arriving in Lagos, it felt good to finally arrive in a place where we could buy the parts that we needed, and competent boat mechanics and electricians!
    We picked our new AIS transponder, a Raymarine AIS700 and went back to the boat to install it. During the installation, Ryan realizes that 2 years ago went our mast came down, our VHF cable and TV cables had been accidentally swapped, causing both our VHF and AIS to not function properly.
    Installing the new AIS helped us figure it out, and we now have a AIS transponder and a VHF radio that works great!
    Again, a big thank you to all of you following this channel, you are the best :)
    /Sophie & Ryan

    Hi guys! We should have been clearer and given better info (pardon the amateurish character of this giveaway, we’ve never done that before). You are super welcome to send your participation to ryanandsophieonaboat@gmail.com until Monday the 15th of October, at which point we will put all the names in a hat a draw one.
    The AIS we give away is a Raymarine AIS250 receiver only, and we’ll send the AIS250 box, compatible with NMEA1083 (so no cables). Let us know in your e-mail if that works for you!

    That was an awesome video! Great job Ryan! Sopromar is really is one nice place! To the person who bought the AIS; that was very generous and thoughtful! Very happy for you guys and the adventure you are leading. Thanks for sharing.
    Here's an idea: in this video, you started with a drone shot (of Lagos I presume), I thought it was a really neat way to start a video. Then I thought wouldn't it be neat if you started each video with a drone shot of the area you're in? I know it wouldn't always be possible, but I think it would really neat. It's just a thought.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Bill! Love the idea!!! You're right, as much as I enjoy flying the drone and editing those nice shots, it's not always possible to fly it. For example, right now, we are docked in Gibraltar right by the airport's runway, and the BA flight is about to take off (for the anecdote ;)) I'll remember the idea though! /Sophie

      We're in Annapolis, Maryland right now, arguably the sailing epicenter of the US, and there are chandleries and boat services everywhere. Nothing like that.
      Hey - we are now 7 weeks into living and traveling on the boat. The learning curve is sharper than I had anticipated, but of course the old saying goes "you don't know what you don't know."

    • @Jakfilm
      @Jakfilm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not complaining! I am having a great time. It's just that there are so many things I had not considered, small things mostly. One larger thing I had not given enough consideration is anchoring technique. For us, anchoring had mostly been throwing down the hook off the local beach for an afternoon of sun and frolic. That and a handful of overnighters in perfect conditions. Now things are real. We dragged really badly on our first real test - a 30-40kt blow off Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It was then that we learned to set the anchor REALLY HARD. Amazingly, our giant Rocna held us in those difficult conditions for another full day once set properly.
      It is supposed to be similar here tonight: 30-40kts as Hurrican Michael brushes past us. I know we can hold in good bottom like Sandy Hook turns out to have been, but now we're anchored in this black goo mud stuff in Annapolis, I am not sure how confident I feel. Do I bail out and spend a fortune on a marina?

      I will admit Wayne, on our way down from Faro to Gibraltar, we ended up in the fog again, and having the AIS transponder (as well as the fog horn) felt really good!!! And in the straight of Gibraltar, a well functioning AIS makes life a lot less stressful... :) /Sophie

    For the most sailors Lagos and Gibraltar are the last viseted Spots on the European Mainland befor starting bluewatercruising over the atlantic, so its a good place for a marina store. The very last stopps than are Madeira and the Canary islands, there is the very last chance to get things fixed

    With the antenna mismatch, was there any damage done to your VHF radio transmit side? Just wondering.

      [Ryan] Good question, i dont believe so but ill need to do some test this winter to confirm

    A vhf cable is typically 50 ohm, but a tv cable 75 ohm. Swapping the connections, but leaving the wrong type of cable in the run, will degrade performance. You really want the vhf connected only to vhf cable, premium cable if you can.

      [Ryan] HI Lyfan, I can confirm the cables are the correct type. The wires just got crossed due to some poor thinking with work done prior to us buying the boat.

      No idea, but that’s how every sailor in this world logs where they’ve been!
      (PS: have you? ;))
