  • Is your ignition lock cylinder giving you troubles? I show you how to simply replace a defective lock cylinder. I show you the tool to buy for the job and what parts to use to repair your XJ's ignition cylinder. I use a Dorman 924-790 Ignition Lock Cylinder to repair my broken column. Optionally, you can buy the 648748 Master Steering Wheel/Lock Plate toolkit for $52 or rent it possibly for free from you local Advance Auto Parts store! In a upcoming episode, I will continue normal GM column repairs and will show how to replace the ignition switch at the base of the column when the starter no longer kicks on...
Parts used in this video (sourced from Amazon and/or RockAuto):

Newer models do not have the lock cylinder retaining screw. Instead, there is a small tab to press down to release the cylinder. Its location would be visible at 9:45.

Unfortunately 1994 Cherokees do not have a torx set screw there is a different configuration. Now it's apart and I have no idea how to remove the cylinder.

After hours of messing with it, 1994 has a vertical dark flat push pin to release the cylinder. Using the smallest flat screwdriver you'll see it in the middle. The small copper plug arms reach over the pin.

I have a 1994. What if it doesn't have the locking screw? Switch won't turn to the lock position to get the key out.

In case someone else sees this just press the tab with a flat head and slide it out

If somebody is doing this and there key is a chrysler style pentgon head build date on your jeep will be after may of 1990 or later up to 95 when they changed the column to newer style anyways there no torque screw there a tiny tab right at the end of lock cyclinder its grey push it in with tiny screwdriver and the lock comes out everything else is the same
