Anyone who’s breaking this dudes balls for using that tool is brain dead. Why wouldn’t you? So you can say you did it without it? Wow. You’re a hero. Tools are there to make jobs EASIER. And a lot of times it helps prevent the stupid stuff from happening.
I removed mine without (but it was a bit of a PITA), but only because it was so late at night that all the parts stores were closed. Anything that makes a job easier or improves success is a good tool IMHO
First of all, thank you very much for your video, it was super helpful. Second, any idea why my Jeep won’t crank? When attempting to turn on ignition doesn’t go further and break light on dashboard comes up. (YJ 92)

I am reassembling and the plate shown at 10:12 spins when the ignition pin drops. Any suggestions on how to get it to stay put?
Such an amazing help!!! Thank you for posting. I lost the keys to my 1995 YJ and no other options worked. Except this-whoop whoop. The ignition must have been swapped out before, because the door & glovebox key the dealer cut for me from the VIN did not work. Thanks again.
Hey bud. Turns out some jeeps. Have a threaded locking nut instead of that tab you push in to release the cylinder

Thank you for this, someone tried to steal my Jeep this week… with this video I was able to do this myself for less than $150. Now if it happens again I know what to do. The tools are cheap, the parts cheap.
They jammed a flat screw driver into the cylinder, key no longer worked.
Where did you get the new cylinder from. I can’t find one anywhere around here.

What would make the lock cylinder stiff to turn, to the point you have to physically back it off from the crank position?
As long as your key can be inserted in the cylinder you don't need to remove any of the steering wheel

How do you align the rod from the cylinder to the ignition switch?
My horn used to work but I took it off for some reason a few months back and I put it back together and have no horn. Oh well
I was surprised mine worked 🤔😀

Once upon a time it was. Its good now. 👍
I was able to make a tool to compress the plate. Started with a piece of sheet metal 4”x1.5”
Drilled a hole in the middle to slide over steering shaft
Drilled one hole on either side and slide some toggle bolts through it.
Slide “tool” over steering shaft
Loosely installed steering wheel bolt
Tightened toggle bolts against plate compressing spring.

Your skull do you have a threaded nut insert in it or just the rubber piece that comes in it?
I need to figure a better way to keep it from working loose over time.

@@Poweraddicts So is mine, it just came with a rubber boot thing and a compression type of lock. It just works it's way loose after time.
Insert your key turn it slightly back towards accessory and pull the cylinder out. Takes about 10 seconds to change your lock cylinder

You don't have to take the steering column apart you can remove the lock cylinder with the key
