    I had this same problem. I fixed it by purchasing a pair of new keys from the dealer. They fit a brand new 2022 Rubicon. The keys cost me about $56,000 which seemed a little expensive, but it solved the problem as well as all of the rattles that my old Jeep had.

    • @JeepSolid
      @JeepSolid  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha! That's awesome! I was hoping for a fix a little less expensive

      You can rebuild the whole column. They have videos on how to. Purchase parts

    Custom start button is my vote! As others have noted, even a used column from a junkyard can cost. Keep us posted Dale!

    I had the same problem on my '89 YJ. The gears that are in the column are cheap and available at Auto zone. They wear and what happened , you put too much pressure on the key so the gears slipped past each other. It's a bit of a fiddley fix but it can be done. Good luck

      Bob do ypu know of a good video that shows how to replace the gear?

    I had the same problem and the rack and gear can be ordered online. It is easy to take off the plastic unit off of the steering column. Keep everything you have off off and unbolt the steering column from the underside of the dash and firewall. Then you will be able to feed the wires through and take the unit off to replace the gear and rack easily. I don’t know if there is an easier way but this is just what I had done.

    Replacement columns are really expensive and junkyards all seem to know wrangler parts are premium. For instance, Deadjeep has tilt columns for $600. I would just go the kill switch route and save yourself roughly $595.

    • @JeepSolid

    I'm currently having the same issue right now with my 88 Jeep Wrangler what I did was I went down to the junkyard and got a whole new steering column or used and I also put in a push button so the key has to be in the on position and then the button push it in and it starts I'm just now getting ready to put the new one in since when you tell him a YJ the price goes up about 300 bucks on those steering columns so I went and found an older model 80s GM steering column which was identical pretty much and it only cost me a hundred bucks

    My jeep has a push start button! It’s a huge convenience. But that also means it’s a huge convenience for theft too so a kill switch is a must! Great vid Dale!

    I would install a push button for the time being and give yourself time to decide or save up for a new column or fix that one. At least you'll still be able to drive the YJ. Personally, my 94 YJ is cherry and I try to keep it 100% stock but if I had one that was just a beater or one I just didn't take as serious I would put in the push button start ad be done.

  • @ronmyers9821

    I had a 90 wrangler. The plastic components in the column had stripped. I ended up bypassing the key with a power switch and a starting switch. I had to wire it up. But it worked great. Just flip on the power switch and hit the starter switch. Good luck

      I have also noticed that wrangler and Cherokee have a lot of the same parts but at different prices. Check on a Cherokee the same year and motor. I needed an alternator for my 93 and it was close to $300 and a mechanic from Chrysler told me what to do. Cherokee alternator was $98. Same part number for both at auto zone. I asked why the price difference and the manager said because the idiots would pay for it.

    You will find the gear and rack assembly in the Dorman Help! Section..Possible you may have look in a couple different part stores yet I know for a fact Dorman makes those parts in a package.

    Depends on parts availability, and cost. If you want to get it back on the road and enjoy it go with a push button and separate kill switch. ( do i detect another "how to video"?)

      I agree, a push start on the column and a kill switch just under the dash. This way you have the option to leave the under dash switch on always and just use the push start on the column or turn it off for added security. Save $ but make it practical

    I think it’s better to fix it the right way it will hold the value if you ever decide to sell in the future and I do believe they have a steering column rebuilt kit that comes with the new gears and it also gives you peace of mind that nobody will figure out how to start your car when you’re parked at the supermarket or something in the driveway with your jeep after you did all that work to it

    Are you sure the key switch rod going down to the actual "Switch" isn't Jammed up on something, like wires or something else causing the gear to jump teeth because the key switch aligns the free end of the gear?... Long question reminiscent of oak Island narration...

    • @mariotibbrine1
      @mariotibbrine1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking that myself that the rod was worn out you see the where the square rod goes but no square rod typically those rods are garbage.
      I think he should just move the key set to the dash and be done with that silly column ignition that's not serviceable without major tear down use dorman cj keyed ignition switch they are like 18.00 bucks at autozone

    Guess what happened to his is a plastic and metal piece that was in the ignition piece in the what happens is that you overturned it and weaken the plastic best thing to do is replace the ignition switch which is the key ignition for placing the whole thing
