  • Ok, so I got a lot of feedback to do a video and here it is! It came out great! I didn’t add the green banana (masa) into it like I seen on a lot of videos I watched but I did take a little of every video and whipped this up! This video gave me alot of flashbacks when my grandma useto make pasteles. I can remember cutting pork and making pasteles. #thosewerethedays unfortunately she’s no longer here physically but I just had great memories come to mind when making this. I don’t remember a lot of her making the pastele filling which this reminds me a lot of but the flavor is definitely there ☺️ #pineappletophawaii #pastele #pastelestew #memories #hawaiieats #hawaiifoodie #hawaiianfood
    Recipe:
    2.5-3lbs cubed pork (size up to you)
    1.5-2 large onions diced
    1 bunch cilantro chopped
    1 red bell pepper minced
    3 SAZON packets
    amzn.to/3wGkxPC
    2 TBS ground cumin
    1 TBS garlic salt
    1 can tomato paste
    6 cloves garlic chopped
    1can olives
    Annatto oil: optional (only for color not flavor)
    SAZON packets has the annatto powder in them as well but if you want it to look more authentic you can add.
    amzn.to/34R7Yqw
    1/4c oil , heat on med , when oil is hot add annatto seeds cover for 1 minute stir and immediately strain.

    As a person born and raisedin Puerto Rico and living in Hawaii, I must say this is so delicious. I prefer this to the actual pastele, especially with some mac salad.

    Born and raised in Hawaii.
    NEVER daw anyone use bell peppers in Pastele or Pastele stew
    Grand parents of Puertorican descent.
    So......
    That changes the whole flavor profile.

    Where are the green bananas? That is one of the main ingredients to making pasteles.

    I just cooked it this evening it came out onolicious! Only mistake I did was use a 12 oz can of Tomato paste. I think the author used an 8 oz? My batch looked like Pork Guisantes rather than Pork Pastele😆. Hope my ohana loves it🙏. Mahalo for sharing this recipe.

      Great! Glad you tried our recipe 🤩 We did use a smaller can of tomato paste but I’m sure it’ll be still tasty 😋

      @Pineapple Top Hawaii I had to omit the Coriander bc it wasn't available anywhere. Sazon as well. But I found a recipe to make from scratch. The aroma was like Carne asada. I can only imagine if the coriander was included. My kids loved it; they are picky eaters. My cousins in Hawaii make Pastele without the cilantro. Interesting.

    Can you use the Annato seeds again? Can you use adobo seasoning Instead of garlic salt?

    • @pineappletophawaii
      @pineappletophawaii  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi fane! Thanks for the questions 🤗, yes you can use the adobo seasoning in place of the salt that’s totally fine, also I wouldn’t recommend using the seeds twice it becomes bitter after cooking. Mahalo for watching 🤙🏼

    Where’s da masa?

    • @pineappletophawaii
      @pineappletophawaii  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No masa in this Pastele stew, I do add it from time to time but when I made this video I couldn’t find good green bananas. Mahalo for watching!

  • @janellwilling2871
    @janellwilling2871 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you add green bananas how would you prepare it differently? What step would you add the banana in?

    • @pineappletophawaii
      @pineappletophawaii  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aloha jan’ell mahalo for watching! If I was to add the green banana I would blend it to a gritty paste and add in some Annatto oil for color, I then would add it in by teaspoon fulls after all the ingredients is in and is simmering. Adding it by the spoonful is a personal preference because I like when it’s in tender chunks. But, if you would like to add it directly to the stew and stir it in you could also do it that way. Again, after all the ingredients is in and simmering. Thanks for the question I’m always glad to give some tips and hopefully it helps everyone! Happy holidays 🤙🏼

    • @janellwilling2871
      @janellwilling2871 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the reply! Does the banana give the stew a different taste? As if I would make it like the video with no bananas?😊

    • @pineappletophawaii
      @pineappletophawaii  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@janellwilling2871 It does, it’s like adding dumplings to a soup. It elevates the flavor and gives it more texture. Either way it tastes great 👍🏼 I sometimes add green banana if I have it’s just a little more work to peel them.
