    A word of advice to anyone taking on this project. When it comes time to reinstall the shifter and boot, make sure the boot ring is open (offset) before you slide it over the lever. You’ll be able to tell by the stitching on the outside being offset about 15 degrees. Slide the shifter down over the lever, but *not* entirely down the base-maybe about 90-95% of the way. *Now* rotate the ring back to the centered position and then pound it the remaining 5-10% of the way down. If you slide it 100% of the way down straight away, you won’t be able to rotate the ring back to center, and the shifter will just be able to slide up and off. I learned this the hard way while driving. Took me about 10 tries to figure out the locking mechanism. Just figured I’d pass along that knowledge.

    I didn't like my initial shifter setting (too far forward) and in a matter of 5 min, I readjusted the cables to give me a much better feel. Just pop off the console side panels, trim piece and center control panel and you can access the cables easily. Great design!

    A short shifter makes a huge difference. Was there not a need, and not included with the shifter, a centering block (a plastic clip to place the transmission in neutral and keep it there while removing and reinstalling the shifter to ensure the cables are in the exact place)? I did the same upgrade to my 997 Turbo before doing any videos (as inspired by people like you) but I know the clip was a helpful if not critical tool to the install.
    Hope you are enjoying the new ride!

    • @TommyLGarage
      @TommyLGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it was included but I didn’t think it was needed to be honest with you. But now that you said it I might check it again :)

    • @DR_CarShow
      @DR_CarShow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TommyLGarage I'd strongly suggest it just to ensure proper alignment with the cables and the smoothest and most direct shit possible.

    • @RyanSheppard
      @RyanSheppard 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm installing my short shifter and it came with a plastic clip (centering block?), I'm just not sure what to do with it. I searched online for information but didn't find anything. Do you know where I can see how it works?

    • @DR_CarShow
      @DR_CarShow 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@RyanSheppard It is used to keep the shifter in neutral for removal and then installation of the shifter. By using the clip it ensures proper alignment of shifter location in relation to the transmission linkage. Some have done this swap successfully without the clip, but I see no reason not to use it for peace of mind.

    I'm 65 days from delivery of a 2022 Cayman GTS 4.0 (currently have 2014 Cayman S), Thinking of going to short shifter for the GTS. Do you think your relative ease of installation would be complicated by having the GTS interior package, which includes leather and stitching on the sides up to the dash and carbon fibre trim all around. Are the side panels still "modular" and separate from the dash and easily removed? Thanks for a great video.....how is your short shifter performing now that you've had it for 8 months?

    • @TommyLGarage
      @TommyLGarage  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are really only two videos up at the moment showing how to do it, and if you go by the instructions from Numeric it looks like you're doing it all wrong. Sorry to say it but it appears that you're supposed to roll up your sleeve so we can see you flexing as you grunt and rip things apart with far more force than you were using in this video. But your camera work is better so I think I'll go with this one as the definitive how-to. Thanks.
