Hope you talking about Simon and Garfunkel because if you're talking about disturbed you must be youngen. Simon and Garfunkels original is amazing. This song told the future.
Simon and garfunkel's version was on point for the time that they released it. This version is the very power update with a lot of hope. The last image: An instrumental Arc crossing the divide.
I think there is only 1 cover ever that is better cause it literally made the original artist say "yeah this is your song now" and thats hurt by johnny cash
I agree. I discovered it several years ago (I’m a big fan of covers) and was dumbstruck by how the interpretation is so much better than the original. Love exposing others to it for the first time and everyone is blown away. (Check out Metallica’s Turn the Page).
I was born in 1968. Heard this song on the radio for years. Never had much effect on me at all. Til now. Ive always liked Disturbed, but this puts them in rarified air. Everytime I hear this, I have tears running uncontrolably down my face. Never has a song affected me this much. I dont suffer from depression and the like, but this....this bares the example of what it must feel like. And the strange thing is, I absolutely love this version
“Hello darkness, my old friend…” Everybody knows the iconic Simon & Garfunkel song, but do you know the amazing story behind the first line of The Sounds of Silence? It began 62 years ago, when Arthur “Art” Garfunkel, a Jewish kid from Queens, enrolled in Columbia University. During freshman orientation, Art met a student from Buffalo named Sandy Greenberg, and they immediately bonded over their shared passion for literature and music. Art and Sandy became roommates and best friends. With the idealism of youth, they promised to be there for each other no matter what. Soon after starting college, Sandy was struck by tragedy. His vision became blurry and although doctors diagnosed it as temporary conjunctivitis, the problem grew worse. Finally after seeing a specialist, Sandy received the devastating news that severe glaucoma was destroying his optic nerves. The young man with such a bright future would soon be completely blind. Sandy was devastated and fell into a deep depression. He gave up his dream of becoming a lawyer and moved back to Buffalo, where he worried about being a burden to his financially-struggling family. Consumed with shame and fear, Sandy cut off contact with his old friends, refusing to answer letters or return phone calls. Then suddenly, to Sandy’s shock, his buddy Art showed up at the front door. He was not going to allow his best friend to give up on life, so he bought a ticket and flew up to Buffalo unannounced. Art convinced Sandy to give college another go, and promised that he would be right by his side to make sure he didn’t fall - literally or figuratively. Art kept his promise, faithfully escorting Sandy around campus and effectively serving as his eyes. It was important to Art that even though Sandy had been plunged into a world of darkness, he should never feel alone. Art actually started calling himself “Darkness” to demonstrate his empathy with his friend. He’d say things like, “Darkness is going to read to you now.” Art organized his life around helping Sandy. One day, Art was guiding Sandy through crowded Grand Central Station when he suddenly said he had to go and left his friend alone and petrified. Sandy stumbled, bumped into people, and fell, cutting a gash in his shin. After a couple of hellish hours, Sandy finally got on the right subway train. After exiting the station at 116th street, Sandy bumped into someone who quickly apologized - and Sandy immediately recognized Art’s voice! Turned out his trusty friend had followed him the whole way home, making sure he was safe and giving him the priceless gift of independence. Sandy later said, “That moment was the spark that caused me to live a completely different life, without fear, without doubt. For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.” Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford. He married his high school sweetheart and became an extremely successful entrepreneur and philanthropist. While at Oxford, Sandy got a call from Art. This time Art was the one who needed help. He’d formed a folk rock duo with his high school pal Paul Simon, and they desperately needed $400 to record their first album. Sandy and his wife Sue had literally $404 in their bank account, but without hesitation Sandy gave his old friend what he needed. Art and Paul's first album was not a success, but one of the songs, The Sounds of Silence, became a #1 hit a year later. The opening line echoed the way Sandy always greeted Art. Simon & Garfunkel went on to become one of the most beloved musical acts in history. The two Columbia graduates, each of whom has added so much to the world in his own way, are still best friends. Art Garfunkel said that when he became friends with Sandy, “my real life emerged. I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.” Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."
Thank you for sharing I never knew the story behind the song till now. It is truly a beautiful story and makes this song all the more meaningful. I am inspired beyond words.
Great story but not the story behind the song. It was written by Paul Simon, who took a few months to get the lyrics right, after sitting in the bathroom in darkness, playing his guitar, and lost in his thoughts, hence the line 'Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.' It wasn't written about Sandy Greenberg by Art Garfunkel. It just resonated with him due to the way Art Garfunkel would look out for him at college.
When he hits “ and the people bowed and prayed”, it still has the ability to raise the hairs on the back of my neck and arms, even after listening to it when it first came out.
This is by far the best rendition of Sound of Silence. The darkness at the beginning draws the listener in and builds vocally showing us the frustration the singer experiences railing against the silence leading to anger at the end building to the crescendo and takes us down from the high in a catharsis. The originally sadly stayed monotone and failed to truly express the emotions hidden within the lyrics.
the next portion of the lyrics "to the neon god they made".....You can almost imagine what Moses felt after the first trip to the Mountain and returned to the gold calf being worshipped.
I've spent probably a year now watching reactions to Disturbed's Sound of Silence. I can say with some authority, this is the BEST reaction. Respectful of the piece, and honest and heart-felt. Thanks.
It's addictive watching these. I spent 5 years in the Corps. I lived through some terrible shit. I rarely ever get emotional, this song brings tears every, single, time.
I've been binge watching today and seen load of the same reaction and it's priceless. Some tears, much emotion. But it's the ''Wow'' at certain intervals of note change that's the best x
So refreshing to see someone listen to the entire piece without constantly breaking the flow to flap their gums. You only truly get David's interpretation of the music and lyrics by letting the song build Constant interruptions destroy the flow. Such a powerful piece I never tire of listening to it. Like most of us, that exhalation of breath at the end demonstrates the effect this rendition of the song has on almost everyone that hears it, it simply takes your breath away.
Another unexpectedly moving piece was Zombie, covered by Bad Wolves. They were supposed to be the back up band, not the recorded, and when she died the first recording day, they knew won't worthy of it san, kanga ,an bloody szrrp.
I've watched many reactions on this exact video and you're spot on. By far the most honest and pure reaction yet. No talking, no analyzing, he just listened! Loved it!!!
You could tell that he was deeply touched by the performance and that is why it's such an great reaction. I feel the same thing when I first heard this cover of the song 😂
Thank you for listening to the piece all the way through before you commented. It has to be heard in its entirety to get the full impact of the words and emotions. The best thing I ever heard about this piece was that Simon and Garfunkel's rendition made you think, Disturb's made you FEEL!
I thought that to, he’s saying ‘get’ of your ass and do something’! That has to be the most powerful cover song I have ever heard! A call to arms indeed! Wow!
I thought the original was more of an......acceptance of the darkness and documentation of how it came about. Disturbed's version is the righteous wrath of a good person fighting the darkness and acceptance.
When David sung this cover..I was crying my heart out. Because it is exactly what is happening to our world RIGHT NOW..I am 69 yrars old and I love this rendition so much I listen to it every single day..He should win an AWARD FOR THIS SONG..GOD BLESS HIM !!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I'm 68 and I absolutely fell in love with the original version and loved it until I heard THIS version... I've listened to this version at least 25 times today and I have gotten goosebumps every single time... David's voice is stunning... I have heard that he was classically trained and I believe it... I couldn't tell it when he sings his heavy metal though....
I agree he absolutely has the best version of this song I’ve ever heard! Simon and Garfunkel did great job on the song they did the original version but this one is the best version
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls" That's the line I identify with the most, I don't know what Simon intended when he wrote it, but it seems like a repudiation of secular Soviet socialism. Everyone is afraid to speak because of the KGB, it's an atheist society where they're made to worship the State, and Russia actually does have some cathedralesque subway stations built by the Soviets and the people get their propaganda at the tenement halls. I imagine it was written more about the US which definitely has some parallel experiences, but the Soviet system was this song implemented deliberately and brutally.
@@underthetrees4780 Retro bigotry. Gotta love it! Your attempt to disguise your dislike or hatred of atheism, secular and socialism by using as an example a near 40 year dead (counting from the fall of the Berlin Wall) form of government, isn't even clever it's so obvious. There are legitimate arguments against some forms of socialism. I'd might even concede to you secularism if agreed about the definition of the term. But, explain to me, though (remembering there are *literally* hundreds of *millions* of gods conceptualized throughout the history of humanity), why not believing in *your* god amongst the *millions* is an issue, some kind of detriment in your head or any of your business even to began with?! How?! There is no inherent "evil" in non-belief of gods and religions. Something you may haven't considered yourself, *@fart sucker* . You are just as much an atheist when it comes to other peoples gods and religions as I am about yours and others, as well.
@@christallh24 you're projecting so much onto me that isn't there, it sounds like you were raised Jehovahs Witness and escaped, now any defense of religion reminds you of your parents, but I may also be reaching. You realize the song was written 60 years ago when the USSR was very real and socialism/communism was still expanding. It's a perfectly timely reference. Also, Soviet style socialism is very much alive in North Korea, and while China has ditched the economics of socialism they've kept the equally terrible Stalinist police state. I didn't reference either of those countries because given the slim chance Paul Simon was thinking/dreaming of socialism it would be in the USSR. Also, I can make the case religion saves people from worship themselves and their State without choosing any particular religion. I do think some religions are better equipped to be a buffer to State tyranny than others, but regardless your athiest rant is irrelevant, and kind of cringey. It's amazing you can parrot some athiest 101 talking points as though you have something unique and interesting to say.
After watching many a reaction, I think the piece that now gets to me most, especially with the visuals of the music video, is "People writing songs that voices never share". The metaphor of a song and its implications that each one of us has a story, an experience, a song to share with the world, but none of us dare to let it out.
I really like that this person LISTENED to the entire song WITHOUT interrupting it BEFORE making comments!! "Talking with out listening" as the song says. Many of these ppl do not bother getting the entire experience and interrupt waaay too much!! Thank you for listening.
I don't think this man could have interrupted this song if he wanted to, I believe like me he was to enthralled with the song to do anything but stay captivated by it's power & ride it out till it was over & then released.
I am thoroughly convinced that this is the finest cover ever done. I'm 53, so the classic original is part of the soundtrack to my childhood. My tendency to always side with the original was blown away and shattered by this version. S&G was amazing, but this destroys it. It conveys the hopelessness better than the original. And thanks to the visuals, you are still left with a feeling of hope.
After a 30 year old warning goes unheeded, how else could it be done and still feel real? Where Simon's work was a warning, this is the outrage that the warning was ignored and the extra result was to smash your face against it to make you LOOK AT IT.
I think simon and garfunkel was singing it as hope that you would listen to the warnings, disturbed sang it as anger that most of us did not listen and with fear of if we continue not to listen but still holding out some of the original hope that we have a last chance at listening
How many times I've heard Disturbed's version and STILL, i feel such strong emotion from it. I remember when S&G first put it out and how at that time, I thought, 'Awww .... how soft. So cutesy'. Fact is, I'm 71 now, a budding and published poet, and recorded singer who chucked it all away for a Marine Corps career. I've seen 2 consecutive years of war without let up Death, destruction, pain and suffering coupled with the happiness of hope for a future of peace and tranquility were my constant companions. With this rendition, I can still feel the pain, the angst, the anger and frustration and indeed, the RAGE at a world that didn't listen. At least I also found that I can still cry, let out MY rage at a world so lost. Semper Fi, USMC Retired 1966-1989
I'm 66, I only served A few years in (74-77) missed Vietnam by just a few months. Lots of people told me I missed nothing. But. Sometimes I think that I needed to prove something to myself. I guess sometimes life takes the path you need. I have a beautiful wife and three great sons. Sorry just and old man ranting. Lol. Semper Fi!
Rob, I have studied voice and classical music for 20 years. Opera snob - yep!!! A friend of mine told me I had to listen to this song. When it was over I just had to sit quiet and let the tears run down my face. There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song. I felt so deeply in love with this interpretation I had to see it live, so I went to a Disturbed. 99% heavy metal, then this song comes on. The entire crowd silenced, cell phone lights were raised, some had lighters, then entire crowd of sweaty gross heavy metal fans joined in unison at the top of their lungs. It was actually quite a spiritual moment. Tears were flowing every where, including mine. In my opinion, this is the most amazing cover of a classic song I have heard. David's voice was just stunning and awe-chilling... and the talent of that heavy metal band is breathtaking... You have to watch the live Conan version...
There is a lot to be discovered and felt in most subgenres of metal. The vocals can be hauntingly beautiful, whether they are clean or dirty, the harmonies created by several bands that have dual lead guitarists cannot be found elsewhere. Does this mean all metal is good, or other genres are bad? Certainly not, but to limit yourself is folly, I think.
Amazing, you know metal gets a bad rap and people think it's one sound. But it's actually one of the most diverse genres out there. Lyrics and vocals on many songs are really emotional and dark.
"There is no way I would ever listen to a heavy metal song"... why would you cut yourself off to some of the most raw emotional music that has ever been created? In 1991, as a senior in high school, I embarked on a choir trip to New York and saw Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables on Broadway up front and personal. That same year, I was introduced to the Black Album by Metallica via Enter Sandman being incessantly played on the radio. I'm telling you, as a choir kid, I had never been exposed to the raw emotion of metal musicians until then. I immediately procured a copy of "And Justice For All" and that sealed the deal. Don't close your eyes to what's out there, you may be surprised at what you will find. There are hidden gems out there that can change your lifestream and philosophy.
Wow! I didn't know that...but I get it. When you're doing the exquisite work that he does vocally, you're in that headspace of executing it technically and with the range and power he brings into it as a trained singer. Then with the music and his vocals building it, it is extremely difficult not to be moved by this message. The official video seen here adds the crowning touch of the music perfectly matched with the imagery.
I agree ! Such a heartfelt , sweet reaction to the perfect rendition of Simon and Garfunkels song by Disturbed …. and yes , very polite of him not to stop the track and make comments …thank you for that !
I've never heard a male voice so beautiful with the ability to go from warm baritone, to tenor, from clear as a bell to rasp/grit and back on a dime! Amazing control. Loved your reaction....so authentic. I felt the same way.
Thank you for remaining "silent" during the performance. I become upset when the "reactor" won't shut up and constantly starts and stops the music video. You showed respect and class and I am grateful for that.
Jim Smith the point of a "reactor" as you put it is to give commentary. Not to stay silent. If you wanted to watch the video without interruption, go watch the original
Sam Pugh I guess you are the only one to disagree with me. Get your own TH-cam channel and do your reactions by starting stopping and see how many viewers you piss off. I would have nothing to do with your channel. Have a wonderful day, buddy.
@@sampugh4085 You've messed up the definition of words. I forgive you. Commentary: a descriptive spoken account (especially on a broadcast) of an event or performance as it happens You've described what a real time commentary would be like, not a reaction video.
Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. I couldn’t love this version any more if I tried and I cry probably every fifth time I hear it. (I listen to it many times a day).
If this Cover doesn't promote an emotional response, you're dead. No shame in being moved, and you're hardly alone in that sentiment! Thank you for taking us along during your 'Reaction!'
Paul Simon called David Draiman (lead singer for “Disturbed”) to say how amazed he was at their interpretation of his masterpiece. Draiman spoke about it in an interview. He was understandably stunned. Draiman is well-regraded as one of metal’s best voices. He trained in synagogue with his dad, who was the Cantor. He has an enormous range! To sing with the passion he does, taxes him and his voice greatly. I have so much admiration for him!
I love the original version, which fit the attitude of the time it came out - this version hits the nail on the head of the present 2018 - a warning that hits the state of our world today.
Here is the link for a Paul Simon interview talking about Disturbed and their version of Sound of Silence. The discussion is at the end of the interview the last two or three minutes th-cam.com/video/cqSwWf6tJRs/w-d-xo.html
I take some solace in that Paul Simon himself cried. So I don't feel so bad. The original was kind of an anthem for my generation. That was a time of prayerful sorrow being right after the JFK assassination, and this version is a primal scream defining how we've grow little since the old days. It's magnificent. And timely.
David draimen actually met Paul simons at a chef Ramsey party after he covered this song and Paul told him thats how this song was supposed to be, that just wasn't their genre they where folk singers
@@rickmerrifield3975 This is the only cover of one of Simon's songs in his extremely prolific songwriting career that he liked enough to link on his own social media.
First of all...thank you for not continually stopping the song along the way to voice your feelings. My favorite point of the video was right at the end when you 'caught your breath' at the end, then when you wiped your eyes from the emotion of hearing this version. As a senior citizen I remember when S&G came out with this song and I loved it. But this version by Disturb blows this song out of the water. I don't know how anyone else can do better!
My exact reaction...tears. Yes, the original will always be the classic but in my little ole opinion, this version is beyond extraordinary and touches my soul so deeply. I had never even heard of the band Disturbed. Holy shit...I'm in love!😁😍💜
Their cover of Land of Confusion is also incredibly powerful (although more in their heavy metal style). This band is killer, in general, but they up the ante when they do covers!
What Disturbed did was give a rebirth to a wonderful classic. The first time you hear a song and you have chills, tears and a true raw emotion is truly a once in a lifetime experience.
Thank your for allowing the tune to play to the end. The first time I heard that cover I almost wept. The power and range of his voice is so expressive and he flows so well between the emotions. When I saw the video I couldn't imagine that voice from him
Finally! A cryer! I’ve watched sooo many reaction videos, and I swear I’m the only one who cries every time! This song doesn’t lose it power- if anything, it gains more power the more you listen and the more it’s understood. I cry every time I hear this song, because of an anger towards humanity at the moment for the very reasons this song outlines. It’s so real and raw and speaks to us on a spiritual level- piercing through our superficial facades.
No matter how many times I hear this, I cry, I laugh, (my mind can't handle this...) I get chills...every damn time!! And THANK YOU for not interrupting...I HATE IT when people stop the video, and comment...they RUIN IT!!!!
I've watched countless reactions to this song, from vocal coaches to singers and composers, but I come back to this reaction because your reaction is the most authentic and genuine, you don't criticise David's amazing vocal range, nitpick on the smallest thing, you appreciate it for what it is, a masterpiece from a very talented singer, thank you. ☺️
You reaction was exactly the same as mine; right down to the way you actually pulled away from the screen slightly as David Draiman ‘projects’ the last verse at the viewer. It brings an emotional response every time I watch it! Astounding!
I love watching people react to this song...esp when people don't know what they are in for. His eyes/voice pierce your soul. Someone else mentioned it below but I do love the Conan version better than the video but it's only because I think the passion is taken up a notch. You should check out Dancing with the Stars performance of this...because the guy who is dancing it is actually DEAF so that adds a whole new layer of emotion to the song. Great reaction as always!
hey just so you know, i truly believe in my heart this is by far the worst cover ive ever heard in my life. if you think this is good music i pity your pathetic soul.
Ultimate Warrior hey. Shut up. People are here like me to listen to music that we love. And if you want to bash that then there is a WHOLE ENTIRE RAP COMMUNITY to do that to, but for us, this is true art
@@Dominantgaming11 im just trying to raise awareness of the butchering of innocent songs. this song is a parodox, the song is called the sound of silence, yet hes belting and growling all this crap, the orchestra is booming, symbols crashing, the harmonies are layered 50 times. it just doesnt sit right with me. the original was completely destroyed because of this. all i can hear is that awful noise coming out of his facehole. you guys think im not the one worth arguing but if you think this song is even remotely good then it is you who are all the ones not worth my time. have a nice life KappaRoss
I really appreciates his genuine reaction to the song and that he has the guts to show his emotions. It is a very powerful version. When I heard it the first time and all the other times to, it gave me goosebumps and I always gets tears in my eyes.
It's not having guts, it's been true to himself, his emotions, and live as a human, I don't believe that even half of the person's who listened to this the first time didn't cry, or at least felt the power and urge to do. If you listen to the word, and let the music flow into your ears, without anything else breaking your attention., you can't stop them.
I am born in 1962 and I loved Paul Simon's version very much. I never could imagine someone could make it better. I am not a fan of cover versions but the mix of Davids angelic and evil voice and the orchestra nailed it to the top !!! Thank you so much for this powerful and impressing milestone of music 💝💝💝
At first, I was watching and I thought "this guy seems like a nice, gentle, and kind fellow" Towards the end, the emotions came flooding into your face. I knew then..... I must subscribe.
You know it happens not that often, but this song brought tears to my eyes. The power in his voice was just beautiful. This is without a shadow of a dought the way this song was meant to be done. Just like GNR knocking on heavens door. It will be this version that people will remember for years to come.
I’ve been lucky enough to hear David Draiman sing this live and it’s spine-tingling. I love the way the song builds and builds and you can feel the big “neon god they made” line coming and you know he’s going to do something epic with it- and then he brings out that gritty growl he has. I get chills every time.
I absolutely loved the gamet of emotions that ran across your face; and how beautiful it was to see you shed tears. A majority of people share these exact feelings and emotions when experiencing this version by Disturbed.
I don’t usually like covers but I love this version, especially with today’s goings-on. Song has more meaning every time I hear it, and I was around for the original.
I love this reaction vid the most, because your face is telling what I'm feeling when I'm listening to the message and watching the great video. Your emotions are so pure and you didn't ruin the build up by stopping the song for bla bla. Disturbed.......THIS is HOW to deliver a message!!! Thanks for this reaction vid, liked it. You're a beautiful human being.
Without a doubt, the most powerful live performance I've ever witnessed from a hard rock/ heavy rock band...the studio version is gorgeous, but this particular live performance brings me to tears as well
They did a live performance on Conan O'Brien. It was sooo good. Basically a very slightly grittier version of this video. Honestly? I liked the live version a bit better.
@@missgluegun5180to my ear, it was only 1 or 2 notes. It didn't bother me. If you have a better recommendation, I'd love to hear it. The way they perform this song is awesome and listening again is no chore.
As Margaret said it was only a few notes and seeing as David has said he never used auto tune, i'm assuming the show used it and David can't be responsible for what the show does. It was an amazing live performance regardless.
Margaret Kime I agree with you. I prefer live performances. I've seen several bands live and I like them all the more live. There is an aspect that draws you in and hooks you completely when you can actually see and hear the emotion the singer and band portrays.
Defenitely not the only person. I heard this for the first time on the radio at work, and from the moment I heard it I was blown away. Tears in my eyes and chills all over. The song does it to me every single time I hear it.
When the first time I listened to it I suddenly started crying. This overpowering emotion watched over me . This song is a masterpiece ignoring the meme
I love S&G and the original. The song is about hold things in, the memories of pain. They are proud of him for singing this. It shows the internal rage. Excellent.
Damn dude, I so understand what you feel! Everytime I hear his version, I’m always ending up crying! The song is meant for us to react like that, even David cried to it when he heard his own voice hearing his cover.
Such an insane cover....its honestly one of the best covers ever, and the live conan version was simply majestic! Our reaction was all the same as your bro! Love it!!!
Okay, i just have to tell you that you, genuinely so, look like such a kind person. Your face and mannerisms just scream how nice you are. Thank you for sharing this video and for recognizing a great cover of this song.
Paul Simon wrote lyrics that had to wait for over 50 years for David Draiman to sing to implement their full meaning and emotion. Without a doubt one of my favorite combination of songs / video ever. Powerful and moving........doesnt get much better then this.
A few years ago I was in a very dark place with suicidal depression and stumbled across this song and thanks to this song I am still here today I cry every time I hear it and it reminds me to never give into the darkness. your reaction is so genuine I was crying with you
Never give up, never feel alone. There are people who will always be there for you and will never want to lose you. I've been there too and it sucks. Stay strong and let those who love you in
There needs to be a more powerful word than powerful to describe this. I have heard this version hundreds of times and it still raises hairs on my arms and brings tears to my eyes.
I want to personally thank Simon and Garfunkel for writing Sounds of Silence so David Draiman could one day sing it.

For that I am tremendously grateful to my friend.”
Sandy graduated from Columbia and then earned graduate degrees at Harvard and Oxford.
I became a better guy in my own eyes, and began to see who I was - somebody who gives to a friend.” Sandy describes himself as “the luckiest man in the world.”
Adapted from Sandy Greenberg’s memoir: “Hello Darkness, My Old Friend: How Daring Dreams and Unyielding Friendship Turned One Man’s Blindness into an Extraordinary Vision for Life."
Thank you for that wonderful story! Have always loved S&G and really love the song!
Thank you
Thank you for sharing I never knew the story behind the song till now. It is truly a beautiful story and makes this song all the more meaningful. I am inspired beyond words.
Thanking you for sharing
Great story but not the story behind the song. It was written by Paul Simon, who took a few months to get the lyrics right, after sitting in the bathroom in darkness, playing his guitar, and lost in his thoughts, hence the line 'Hello darkness my old friend, I've come to talk to you again.'
It wasn't written about Sandy Greenberg by Art Garfunkel. It just resonated with him due to the way Art Garfunkel would look out for him at college.
When he hits “ and the people bowed and prayed”, it still has the ability to raise the hairs on the back of my neck and arms, even after listening to it when it first came out.
It’s like he looks into your soul lol
Fr though
The entire song has does that for me...
Thanks.
Glad im not the only one
I just want to hug him so much, just give a big ole squeeze
It's addictive watching these. I spent 5 years in the Corps. I lived through some terrible shit. I rarely ever get emotional, this song brings tears every, single, time.
@@Hyper811 I thought I was to
I've been binge watching today and seen load of the same reaction and it's priceless.
Exactly Brother :-)
Totally agree!!!
YES!!! Agree 💯
Another unexpectedly moving piece was Zombie, covered by Bad Wolves. They were supposed to be the back up band, not the recorded, and when she died the first recording day, they knew won't worthy of it san, kanga ,an bloody szrrp.
Best part of this reaction is just how very nearly speechless it left him.
Mate, your reaction was the most honest emotional I have witnessed.
Richard K MuseVid-Metal RVREVO yes!! He is so sweet and emotional!
I've watched many reactions on this exact video and you're spot on. By far the most honest and pure reaction yet. No talking, no analyzing, he just listened! Loved it!!!
Totally agree! Also, that was my reaction to this version too.
You could tell that he was deeply touched by the performance and that is why it's such an great reaction. I feel the same thing when I first heard this cover of the song 😂
I cannot listen to this song performed by this artist without crying myself. Much love brother. Subcribed
Thank you for listening to the piece all the way through before you commented. It has to be heard in its entirety to get the full impact of the words and emotions. The best thing I ever heard about this piece was that Simon and Garfunkel's rendition made you think, Disturb's made you FEEL!
Now that is an honest and true reaction video. No ego, no interruptions, just a pure emotional reaction. Thank you.
This is a vocal masterpiece.
Beautifully put Lawrence.
It truly is!
The performance of a lifetime.
Lo es🎤🎧👍
I feel that the original is more of a surrender to darkness where disturbed is more a call to arms to fight against darkness
Agreed.
Yup Same
I thought that to, he’s saying ‘get’ of your ass and do something’! That has to be the most powerful cover song I have ever heard! A call to arms indeed! Wow!
I thought the original was more of an......acceptance of the darkness and documentation of how it came about. Disturbed's version is the righteous wrath of a good person fighting the darkness and acceptance.
Lol ten thousand fists in the air
@@883mobelly And that, sir, is the highest compliment one can give to a band who does a cover. Many thanks for sharing this viewpoint.
Amen :-)
ALL are moved…the musicians will bring us home.
I agree he absolutely has the best version of this song I’ve ever heard! Simon and Garfunkel did great job on the song they did the original version but this one is the best version
People think "Hello darkness my old friend" is dark, IMO I think "Silence like a cancer grows" to me is the darker lyric.
Man does that lyric haunt me.
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement halls"
That's the line I identify with the most, I don't know what Simon intended when he wrote it, but it seems like a repudiation of secular Soviet socialism.
@@underthetrees4780
Retro bigotry.
Saw this in the comments of another reactor;
God: "Do you want to sound like an angel or a demon when you sing?"
David: "Yes please"
Lol, hit the nail on the head!
And God saw that it was good.
Yes. David's voice is beautiful when he is singing in a usual tone, but it is beautiful and powerful when he adds his growl.
Best cover I've heard
BRILLIANT!
I really like that this person LISTENED to the entire song WITHOUT interrupting it BEFORE making comments!! "Talking with out listening" as the song says. Many of these ppl do not bother getting the entire experience and interrupt waaay too much!! Thank you for listening.
actually it's Talking without Speaking....Hearing without Listening...but I get what you were going for....
Oh god yes, bloody infuriating!
I agree ! Perfect way to do it ! I wish they all did this
Nigel Battle does this as well. Has respect for the song and David.
I couldn't agree more ;)
Same
Watch Disturbed and Myles Kennedy live at Houston. Even better than this. Piece to you all.
Agreed!! Just breath taking....
Cannot agree with you more.
I am Simon and Garfunkel old......
But this is the way it was meant to be sung
After a 30 year old warning goes unheeded, how else could it be done and still feel real? Where Simon's work was a warning, this is the outrage that the warning was ignored and the extra result was to smash your face against it to make you LOOK AT IT.
Yes sir
I really appreciate this comment. I didn’t know who Simon & Garfunkel was until this song.
Jesse Wright why does everyone keep saying “this is the rage because the warning was ignored” 😂

Wow you retired the year I was born.
LOL your story gave me chills, I can so imagine it, I was blown away by the raw and tempered passion, its superb
Jeff Hooper welcome to our family
Draiman cried after he heard himself sing it, it's okay for you to cry. Think you're supposed too.
I've watched it probably 2 dozen times and cry almost every time. It just hits that hard.
Really? I didn't know it!!
I worry about anyone who listens to this and DOESN'T cry! :)
I agree ! Such a heartfelt , sweet reaction to the perfect rendition of Simon and Garfunkels song by Disturbed …. and yes , very polite of him not to stop the track and make comments …thank you for that !
I cry every time. No shame. It IS powerfully done.
I've never heard a male voice so beautiful with the ability to go from warm baritone, to tenor, from clear as a bell to rasp/grit and back on a dime! Amazing control. Loved your reaction....so authentic. I felt the same way.
This version touched all of us in a very deep way. Thank you Rob for watching it all the way through. All the best for 2024 from South Africa..
If only the actual video was on TH-cam for you to watch straight through at your leisure 🤔🤔
The point I guess he's trying to make is that most often, reactors talk and stop the music at crucial moments of the music i.e climaxes of songs
@@sampugh4085 You've messed up the definition of words. I forgive you.

You've described what a real time commentary would be like, not a reaction video.
Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. I couldn’t love this version any more if I tried and I cry probably every fifth time I hear it. (I listen to it many times a day).

Well-spoken, my fellow fan. 🤘😎
When the original artist calls you on the phone to tell you what a great job you did on their song you know you did it right
If you would be so kind as to share the link to the interview that would be greatly appreciated
I love the original version, which fit the attitude of the time it came out - this version hits the nail on the head of the present 2018 - a warning that hits the state of our world today.
Here is the link for a Paul Simon interview talking about Disturbed and their version of Sound of Silence. The discussion is at the end of the interview the last two or three minutes

Believe it or not, this is the writer Paul Simons favorite version of the song
I take some solace in that Paul Simon himself cried. So I don't feel so bad. The original was kind of an anthem for my generation. That was a time of prayerful sorrow being right after the JFK assassination, and this version is a primal scream defining how we've grow little since the old days. It's magnificent. And timely.
David draimen actually met Paul simons at a chef Ramsey party after he covered this song and Paul told him thats how this song was supposed to be, that just wasn't their genre they where folk singers
Paul Simon even has a link to this cover on his site.

Haha I hope you have tissues
His vocal range is unbelievable especially for a man makes the hair on my entire body stand on end every time I hear it
First of all...thank you for not continually stopping the song along the way to voice your feelings.
VLPRESL You sure there's nothing that pierces the soul as much?
Try on "Darkness" off Disturbed's "Believe" record... last track. You'll see the light.
Their cover of Land of Confusion is also incredibly powerful (although more in their heavy metal style). This band is killer, in general, but they up the ante when they do covers!
Disturbed are amazing 😍
What Disturbed did was give a rebirth to a wonderful classic. The first time you hear a song and you have chills, tears and a true raw emotion is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Disturbed really changes the song from a "prophecy" by S&G to a rage towards the fools who ignored it
Finally!
I love seeing people have honest emotion to music. I get teary eyed and goosebumps every time I listen to this one.
Still gives me goosebumps! That mans voice is a blessing to be able to hear.

Yes he is great.. but disturbed this song whoa.

Every. Time.
I get the chills non stop. This song touches me like nothing I’ve ever experienced with music. Unreal!!!
I absolutely loved the gamet of emotions that ran across your face; and how beautiful it was to see you shed tears. A majority of people share these exact feelings and emotions when experiencing this version by Disturbed.

I always cry. It is so beautiful. David's voice moves my heart.
I don’t usually like covers but I love this version, especially with today’s goings-on. Song has more meaning every time I hear it, and I was around for the original.
By the way, your listener's comments are, as a whole, the best I've ever seen on any reaction video, ever. I am in full agreement with many of them.
I love this reaction vid the most, because your face is telling what I'm feeling when I'm listening to the message and watching the great video.

Margaret Kime Tge Conan version was autotuned. Check a concert version!

I sobbed... and continue to. So powerful!
When the first time I listened to it I suddenly started crying. This overpowering emotion watched over me . This song is a masterpiece ignoring the meme
You’re such a gentle man. I enjoyed your reaction to this song very much. Thank you.👍🏼
I love S&G and the original. The song is about hold things in, the memories of pain. They are proud of him for singing this. It shows the internal rage. Excellent.
The original is great but this version is my favorite because I can feel it in my bones and it's just so much more powerful!
I’ve never seen or heard of him before-WOW! Is right. That was a powerful and emotional performance. I need to listen a few more times.
Damn dude, I so understand what you feel! Everytime I hear his version, I’m always ending up crying! The song is meant for us to react like that, even David cried to it when he heard his own voice hearing his cover.
Best Lead group vocalist live performance of all time. He gave us his soul...and untouchable power range...Thank you
Yes! Him, and also Brent Smith of Shinedown.
Such an insane cover....its honestly one of the best covers ever, and the live conan version was simply majestic! Our reaction was all the same as your bro! Love it!!!
The live Conan version was absolutely amazing. I often go back and watch that version when I think of this song
It's not a cover, it's a revival song, they include that in their album
I agree with you. The Video on the Conan show is my favorite.
Okay, i just have to tell you that you, genuinely so, look like such a kind person. Your face and mannerisms just scream how nice you are. Thank you for sharing this video and for recognizing a great cover of this song.
Metal is not all just noise. Welcome to metal 🤘
I came for the song, I stayed for your silent but emotional reaction, lovely thank you!!!
I had the same reaction. Surprises you and you FEEL it, so emotional.
The way they built this song up and let it rip with such emotion is epic. Such power and then drops off to pure softness. 🤟
When I first heard this rendition, I too cried as I was just blown away by not only the tone but the message. Powerful.
Your reaction is expected and I’m glad you watched and listened to the whole thing before reacting. Thank you.
Paul Simon wrote lyrics that had to wait for over 50 years for David Draiman to sing to implement their full meaning and emotion. Without a doubt one of my favorite combination of songs / video ever. Powerful and moving........doesnt get much better then this.
It's hauntingly beautiful. Gives me chills. David looks through your soul 💫
Stay strong and let those who love you in
Love, Love, Love his reaction!!!! Truly heartfelt and sincere. Now that is what its all about. Such a POWERFUL SONG!!!!! Absolutely AMAZING.
The best cover I have ever heard. His voice makes the hair on my neck stand up. Truly amazing. ❤🎶
Right on. Thank you for not intruding on the play and just listening through. Most don't. You're great at this; most aren't. Best.
TY! For your raw emotions! I cried with you!
This cover proves that Metal can be a spiritual experience. Something that us Headbangers already know but those are are not have yet to discover.
I love this review, no interruptions, and allowing the song to play out and comment at the end, very nice!
I'm sure that someone has told you this, but you MUST listen to their performance of this on Conan.
As soon as I heard Disturbed covered this I had to hear it. I tear up EVERY SINGLE TIME
Omg you said powerful just now said same thing !! Woe!! Awesome
There needs to be a more powerful word than powerful to describe this. I have heard this version hundreds of times and it still raises hairs on my arms and brings tears to my eyes.
